Kirbytober Day 24: AU

'Wilting Hope'

This lil AU idea started out focusing on Sectonia- or more accurately Joronia in this case. Then it spiraled into an AU idea where Nightmare won, and all of Dreamland/ Popstar would suffer from an eternal nightmare, and most villains end up winning + some roles reversed and/or changed.

Joronia here was gifted the Dark Mirror instead... but she rejects the gift from Taranza. Little did she expect the mirror to then steal away Taranza himself...! And now she's on a search for him and that blasted mirror.

Not sure if I'd use Keeby here... idk feels a bit mean when they've already been in Dreamcourse with Kirby. The general idea tho is that Keeby struggles to fight back the evil forces... Dark Matter takes over as well, possessing Dedede.

Parallel Susie here joins Joronia's efforts to fight back the evil forces... with her own selfish goals in mind. Since she's foreign to Popstar, she is unaffected by the eternal nightmare. That being said... she's taken over the Haltmann company, still with Star Dream intact. What happened to her father though...?

That's as much as I have though, I haven't thought about EVERY character of course! Also I'm using the name Joronia here in this AU, so its separate from the main Kirby world. A fun way to use the unconfirmed name.

Side stories? What is that? Well, indeed, I decided to write complementary side stories of 20 Times Kirby! (or Twenty Times Kirby if you want to be specific)

If you are wondering why I decided to do that, that actually has to do with the rewrite version of Midnight Madness. So, before you read my explanation, read that first for it to make sense. Also, I will end up spoiling some things about the original 20 Times Kirby to properly explain, so yeah, don't say I didn't warn you.

So, as I started to rewrite Midnight Madness, I wondered what the heck to do with Marx's whole video. I mean, that whole thing was extremely OP. He has a machine that can turn ANYONE's memories into videos?! That is just way too powerful. He could stalk anyone with that! On top of all that, I had introduced later in the story not only Keeby's memory powers, but also a machine that Dedoo had that allowed Luz to make photos of her memories. If Dedoo had really made a machine that could turn everyone's memories into videos, why did Luz opt to use pictures instead, considering her whole story was miles wilder than Marx's? And Dedoo would have a machine that is way more powerful than Keeby's own powers? Things just... weren't adding up.

So, with all that in mind, I decided to simply remove the video completely, and instead have Marx tell the story to Anny. However, he just telling her like that wouldn't convince her at all. The whole reason the original version had Marx show Anny a video was because the story was really crazy and she wouldn't believe it otherwise. So, I basically went back to the original problem of that story: how would Anny believe Marx?

Long story short, I decided two things: one, introduce the machine that can make photos of memories here, to also make it less random whenever it's used for Luz at the end of the comic; two, make Anny actually unlock her memories as Marx tells the story, which also ties to a concept I introduced later in the story which is exactly like that.

What that caused to the rest of the story I won't detail here, but you may be wondering how that ties to the side stories. Well, the thing is, once I decided Marx would tell the story to Anny, and not show a neat video that could just show magically everything I wanted to tell readers, this meant that Marx couldn't tell the whole story. He could only tell what he saw and was told. Moreover, due to it being Marx telling something inside a story, this meant a lot of fluff of the original was cut.

In a way, this was a good thing, after all this made Midnight Madness be more to the point, and removed a bunch of unnecessary details that were instead quickly mentioned by Marx. But, writing that inside the story, I realized the limitations of a character telling a story within a story. Not only that, but I also was sad that some things that I wanted to rewrite were cut, in particular the whole thing with Kirby before Marx arrived.

Thinking of all that, one day I decided to experiment writing the story told by Marx in Midnight Madness from Kirby's perspective instead, as a separate thing. It started so well that I felt inspired to start two more, one story narrated by Panee, and another by Lindroganti. Realizing that there were many stories or events told/mentioned in 20TK that could be expanded, I decided to officially start a complementary project of writing stories in first person, narrated by various different characters, in a way to enrich my story if people want more.

To be clear, the plan is to make these stories extras. As in, if someone doesn't read the side stories, they can still completely understand the story of 20TK and won't be missing out crucial details. But if someone wants more, I am giving them more.

Right now, my plan is to release that story from Kirby's perspective in the coming months (aiming for February ideally, the latest being March), as that ties with Midnight Madness. I will write them in parallel with the rewrites of regular 20TK chapters, so don't worry. They will be posted in AO3 like the others, under a new series. As for them on Wordpress I'm currently unsure, since I want to keep them separate. I am debating maybe making a Wordpress site just for them, but unsure.

Could you perhaps tells us how Popopo would react when he finds out that the few abilities Meta has is not considered 'real' abilities? (If I remember right, I have to re-read your story a bit when I have the time. So much have happened the last few chapters I just need to read it all over again just to make sure I haven't missed anything). And thuse the dark blue knight understands him better than most as Meta himself had prove with skill and hard earn strength that he could be a star warrior.

BSbjdhf I hope it's not too overwhelming, I just like a lot of connected stuff, and it's totally okay to forget a few things here and there. It's a lot and is just a fun trip to go through. I don't expect a 500 page essay or anything, that's for me to do to have fun and see if anyone catches certain details/hints I planted<3

And Meta sees a lot of himself in Popopo! That little fella is just a lot softer than Meta was---he has a lot of insecurities about it but went in a more passive direction than Meta did. That is what worries him the most since the poor boy struggles a lot, but he thankfully keeps getting back up despite it all.

I'll kind of go deeper into that little Puff's stuff below the cut with some small bits of my fic to kinda show stuff off but yeah there's some small details that I sprinkle in about every character, even if they're minor.

But yeah, the inspiration can only go so far since he's realllllyyy hard on himself. Meta is like this too, in a lot of his POV chapters he berates himself over so many things despite doing a lot of amazing things. Meta is really keeping an eye on this one out of the other children since they don't have the same issues.

Even Volcan, who was traumatized, is adjusting pretty well all things considered.

Now for some fun character details/parallels below the cut that will also tie into the no-Ability thing they got going on:

Keeby, being the eldest of the Gold Generation is very much the big brother and tries to encourage Popopo to be nicer to himself. (To mirror Meta for a sec, Falspar was the one who tried to encourage Meta to not be so down either.)

Keeby's even yelled at his Shadow self back in the mirror world for being so mean.

His mirror self really hits how Popopo sees himself; useless, a waste of time and resources and ultimately broken. Someone that's only good to be a shield for Kirby if needed.

But the thing is, out of all the kids, Popopo was the one to realize the Mirror World denizens were just reflecting their worst selves. He showed mercy and sympathy while Artemis was ready to just shatter them all. He didn't want her to hurt the other because he could tell they were already suffering, even if the other insisted on picking at his insecurities.

Sure, there's a bit of envy from how much attention Kirby gets, being a fabled prophetic baby and all, but anyone would. He wants to be special too, but he doesn't see that he can bring something else to the table as well, much like Meta Knight didn't see when he was younger.

They see from the lens of "how useful am I in combat?" but can't see beyond that. It's like someone focusing solely on one singular thing that they feel will dictate their value while ignoring everything else.

Meta was lucky in that he brute-forced his skills in battle and cultivated his ego well enough with his wit and intelligence.

Popopo on the other hand is struggling with battle but is very perceptive and doesn't just charge into things unless he has to. (He's a kid so he's still figuring himself out too.)

Meta Knight's words were genuine here, knowing everyone has a purpose, even if there isn't a fancy prophecy to them. Meta doesn't have one and look at all that he has accomplished---Galacta and Kirby, two extremely powerful and legendary creatures, wouldn't be where they are without him guiding them along.

It's a hard thing to grasp for these two and even to this day Meta still mentally berates himself for not being good enough despite doing everything he possibly can do in situations.

While Meta has been at this longer, it's a very hard and toxic mindset to entirely shake off. He knows that and doesn't want Popopo to feel that way, but is unsure how to get out of it himself.

It's also why you see Dark Meta Knight constantly boasting about being the best while also being extremely critical. (He needs to be the best or else what purpose does he fulfill?)

Meta tries to help Popopo with combat where he can, gave him a sword, and even noticed Joe and Silica's suggestion to help the boy:

He just wants the kiddo to succeed as well, but unlike himself, Popopo just doesn't have the same strength he had as a young baby. They aren't one-to-one the same. If they were, Meta would have a run for his money, haha. Popopo is far too soft and sweet to really have the same bite Meta had as a kid.

But don't worry, there's a happy ending for this little lad.

As a teen/adult he is definitely a lot happier and sure of himself. He's actually a very decent fighter once he stops dragging himself down.

But until then, he's working through his insecurities like all the others around him. His just happen to hit Meta far closer to home.

I mean, heck, even Kirby of all the kids has insecurities about being unable to summon his Warp Star alone or being unable to speak like them. Galacta Knight fears never being good enough to save everyone as he always wanted and is also hard on himself when he can't do everything.

Just goes to show that even "special" sorts also have their issues too.

I've rambled a lot now but yeah, there's some fun fluff to digest about these guys<3

Why did Keeby/Kirby keep the parallel/umbrella/whatever long after it was necessary? And which character slots have changed? (Ex: the Papyrus Slot, the Mettaton Slot, etc...) Unless even that India'e a surprise, too... And as long as I'm asking long, sequential, anonymous asks, is the New Home equivalent going to be some fusion of Dedede's Castle and the Wham Bam Rock boss room?

They got the parasol ability. Thats why they had it for so long. Attacking works differently in Underpuff than in Undertale. The Puff didn't have an ability thus they could only inhale. As for the replacement, I'll just say this. The characters that were in the spot were too hard to work with, and their replacements are more fitting. And new home will be Dedede's castle, but Wham has been relegated to a more interesting role. Honestly, you could have figured it out by now if you're sharp enough. ;)
