I hear from a lot of parents struggling with this challenge. The first question I ask them is if they believe that if they tell their child not to hang around with that person or group how do you think that will land on them? Even though we may think we know better we can’t put ourselves in a position where we need to control who another human being interacts with. Even if our gut tells us it is wrong. We don’t own our children. If you parent from this perspective you are going to create lots of chaos in your families life. If we try to control our children and forbid them from seeing xyz. What do you think will be their reaction? Yes, you aren’t telling me who to hang out with and I am going to spend more time with them because that is something that I can control. No matter how difficult things become we have to think about how we are trying to control them and step back and let them have the relationships they desire. Then be there if the bottom drops out from under them. Either way they are going to do whatever they want. so why not be on the side of Unconditional love and support instead of the enemy trying to control them. Keep in my mind what you were doing when you were their age. Remember the peer pressure. The constant battle to fit in. Your parents and how they parented you. We always have 2 choices when approaching a teen that is trying to find their independence and discover who they are. #1 we can try to control and manipulate them into behaving the way we want them or #2 we can be there, support and give them the space to discover themselves and make those mistakes that they will learn from. Either way they are going to do what they want and wouldn’t you rather the on the side of being connected with them when they need our support? Becoming a connected parent is easy. We just need to learn how to let go of our own expectations and drown out our own egos.
