Build Up Episode 0: Getting to Know the Boys Part 2: Team Soul

Hey friends! Continuing my introductory posts about the guys on MNET's Build Up before I can dive into proper recaps, here's the low down on Team Soul -- their background, basic info, and my opinion on their teaser performance (and other performances). (I did Team Allround last time.) Let's go!

Same disclaimers apply -- 1) these are all excellent vocalists and I am just splitting hairs here 2) this is taking forever and screencaps with my video source are tricky, so please forgive my awkward screencaps and occasional typos. Thank you!!

Ma Jaekyung

Jaekyung is 27 and from a group called Romeo, where he was the main vocalist and performed under the name of Kyle. He also appeared on Mixnine, that blighted show that produced a group that never debuted. It was such a fiasco, ugh, and so many trainees went through hell for nothing. Bitsaeon from M.O.N.T. , Jeong Inseong from KNK, and Donghun from A.C.E. all went on that as well, so they all might have gotten friendly then.

Jaekyung (and the other members of Romeo) also went on Peaktime, a show for idol groups that had already debuted but weren’t super successful, including Vanner (who won!), M.O.N.T, and BDC, so he may have met Taehwan, Bitsaeon (again), and Hong Seongjun. When Romeo was on Peaktime, they performed the SHINee song Juliette, which is a cute choice since that’s the name of their fandom. And then MNET didn’t bother airing that performance. Thanks, MNET! Themnet.

So, as for his group itself. Romeo was a 7 member group that debuted in May of 2015, when he would have been 18 years old. The group did slightly better in Japan than they did in Korea, but none of their Korean singles charted at all and most of their MVs have fewer than 200,000 views. Their biggest hit appears to be Lovesick. When the guys from Romeo went on Peaktime, they revealed that Romeo had disbanded at some point in the past.

In Jaekyung’s k-profiles listing, it says he’s” a 4D” kind of guy, so I guess we should watch out for his personality, if MNET will show it. It’s hard to picture a guy in a tan blazer as wacky, but we’ll see!

His teaser song was V25, Passing by Kim Bum Soo. For me, he has a really nasal tone to his singing that isn’t my favorite, and I am not a huge fan of his kind of wobbly vibrato, but like everyone on this show, he’s essentially a very good vocalist, with what seems like a very good sense of pitch. Again, it’s a ballad and my ears sort of turn off, so I’ll keep an open mind.

Seokhwa

Here is Kang Seokhwa, who is in WEi. He also went on YG Treasure Box, where he would have met CIX’s Seunghwan, and Produce X 101, where he ranked 35th and would have met two of the all rounders on this show, Choi Suhwan and BDC’s Hong Seongjun.

WEi, pronounced something like “we-eye”, is a six member group that debuted in 2020. WEi is almost entirely made up of contestants from Produce 101, Produce X 101, and Under 19, including some who won their seasons. Seokhwa is their main vocal. The WEi song Spray spent some time on my playlists recently, but I don’t know many of their other songs. WEi’s most popular member, Johan, is significantly more popular than the others; he came in first place in Produce X 101. Their videos get around 10-15 million views each, putting them slightly lower in the popularity ranking than CIX and AB6IX, but leagues ahead of IMFACT and Romeo.

I checked out an MR removed video of Spray and Seokhwa was really stable, so I can see why he’d come on the show. He’s V37, and it’s a ballad and you know me by now so it’s hard for me to give this a chance but he has a sweet voice that sounds best when he’s singing more softly, which can’t be said of everyone on this show. We’ve got a lot of belters here! He strains a bit on the higher notes, and I feel like he closes his throat a bit when he belts, but doesn’t get too nasal, which is good. He’s young yet -- he’s only 23, one of the younger people on the show -- and I hope he keeps working on his voice, because he has a lot of potential.

Donghun

Donghun will turning 31 at the end of February of this year (2024), and he’s already done his military service.

He is the main vocal of A.C.E., a five member group under Beat Interactive/Swing Entertainment that debuted in 2017 with the song Cactus. Their songs don’t chart in Korea, but they get into the top twenty on the US World Chart, because USA has taste, yo.

If there’s one song of theirs that I think you’d know it would be Goblin (Favorite Boys). But there’s also Under Cover, which is also a banger. Whoever did the subtitles on their older videos puts the names of the singers in, so you can easily find Donghun in their videos. Some of their older songs have 15-20 million views, but their newest comeback, an English language mid-tempo ballad called Effortless, has less than a million views, maybe because it’s in English? Or because it’s a mid-tempo ballad? I don’t know, if you like Who Do You Love by Monsta X, songs like that, you might like Effortless. Really, their songs are good. I feel like it’s a weird situation where everyone likes A.C.E. but somehow they’re still kind of nugu. I know, that doesn’t make sense.

Donghun went on Mixnine (he won 8th place and should have debuted), so he probably knows the other Mixnine contestants on this show: Bitsaeon from M.O.N.T., Ma Jaekhyung from Romeo, and Jeong Inseong from KNK. He may also know Park Jeup from when they both went on I Can See Your Voice 4.

He set himself up for a tough time by singing an EXO song for his teaser song (V20, Miracles in December). Literally no one can sing it like they can. Still, he does pretty well. He has an appealing warm vocal color and he really goes for that long held note, holding it with good breath support. I just worry because I can almost feel his throat straining on the higher notes. He hits them, but it’s got to hurt. He also relies on some pretty loud background vocals so it’s harder to tell how much of it is live. Despite that, he’s an excellent idol singer and I’ll always support A.C.E. and him.

Lee Minwook

Minwook is 23 and is in a group called Newkidd. I guess he likes vests? What, oh what, what on earth is up with the styling for these guys? Most of them are dressed like they’re going to a college interview. I don’t get it!

As far as I know, Minwook hasn’t been on any other survival type shows, making him one of the 15 members of the cast who haven’t (and 4 of those are musical actors).

Newkidd is a 7 member group under J-FLO Entertainment, an agency that manages only them, and the debuted in 2019. Most of their MVs get a million views or fewer. From what I can tell, their most popular song is Tu Eres, featuring the Spanish refrain “tu eres, tu eres, tu eres bonita” (you are, you are, you are pretty). The comments on the video are mostly in Spanish and show a lot of excitement about hearing Spanish in a Kpop song, and I can’t blame them! Representation! So maybe Newkidd is more popular in Spanish speaking countries and is courting that market. That’s smart -- it’s a huge market!

In his teaser, Minwook was V09, The Manuel by Eddy Kim, an example of a ballad I actually like -- it has some interesting chord progressions and isn’t sappy at all. I also like his performance. He seems to just be singing live while accompanied by just one guitar, which gives me faith in his vocals. I think his voice might be more “unique” than “soul” but these categories are pretty reductive anyway. He puts a lot of warmth into his lower notes and makes you almost feel like you understand what he’s singing. He doesn’t display his higher register or belt as much here, so I’ll be waiting to see more of what he can do.

Lim Sanghyun

Sanghyun is listed as a singer-songwriter, and he’s 27. He’s considered a ballad artist specifically, and is signed to MNH entertainment, where he releases mostly digital singles. I know the ballad market in Korea is really big, even if it’s not my favorite, so go for it, Sanghyun!

His teaser was V14, one of those kinds of ballads I hate so much that it’s hard for me to be fair. He sings in that classic K-ballad style, that kind of gruff whisper-sing, which can go either way for me depending on the song.I don’t think he ever really lets go and belts in his teaser, so I’ll be curious to hear what that would sound like.

Bain

This is Bain, age 22, and I adore his voice. (His name is pronounced “bane”, if you’re wondering, based on the hangul.)

Let me talk about him for a moment.

No, wait. Instead of me talking, you should just listen to this. It’s just a straight forward, earnest cover of Oliva Rodrigo’s Driver’s License, with no winky “ha ha I’m a boy singing this,” no sarcasm. Just a pure performance. His vibrato is so sweet. He exhibits barely a trace of nasality, and when it’s present, it’s for the emotion of the song. The notes he hits in his full chest voice? I can’t believe it. And his mixed register is like, chef’s kiss. I can’t. I just can’t. I’d never heard of him before this show, but I heard this performance and I was good. Even my fella was like, “wow, this guy has technique.” So you’re going to have to accept that I’m a Bain fan and will be cheering for him.

I had to look into Just B. They’re a 6 member group under Bluedot Entertainment, a subdivision of Kakao that manages only them. They debuted into 2021, and their members were contestants on Under 19, I-land, and a few other survival shows. (Side note: I watched a lot of I-land, but never saw any of Under 19. Starting to think I should add it to the list.) JustB has a few title tracks out at this point and they usually get about 10 millions views each. I listened to a few of them over the last few days (it’s taking me a while to write this recap) and I’ve come to like a few of their songs. Their most recent comeback is called Medusa, and though the lyrics make negative amounts of sense, it’s pretty catchy. I also liked Damage quite a bit. The group doesn’t seem to have set positions, but it seems that Bain and Geonu are more or less the main vocals.

Jay

Jay Chang, V02, age 22, famous for almost making it into Zerobase1, landing in 10th place. He’s American, with a white-Filipino-Chinese ethnic background, and on Boys Planet, he was extremely popular among the “Global” voters, but not very popular among the Korean voters. He also went on another show called Under 19 at some point, if you watched that -- I didn’t, but maybe I should. In case you didn’t watch Boys Planet, here is his initial audition to Rush Hour,and here is his performance of Exo’s Love Me Right (he was main vocal).

I know that most of my 3 or 4 readers are Jay fans, and that is cool by me. I’ve always thought he has a really really lovely, clean vocal color, he has good stage presence, and I think he’s basically a nice guy, though he sorta gives me fuckboi vibes sometimes. I also think -- and don’t get mad at me, ok? -- I also think that he needs to work on his pitchiness and nasality. That’s true in both the opening notes of his Rush Hour audition, and at points in his Baby Baby teaser song. He was one of the top 3 or 4 vocalists among the Boys Planet boys, but he’s in a different setting now and might just be outsung by the other vocalists here. I hope that you’re ok with that. I’m not saying that he’s a bad singer. Everyone on this show is a very good singer, and Jay is also a very good singer! I’m just looking for a voice that can compete with D.O.’s voice, and my standards are up in the sky. (Hanuel wilo fly fly!)

Jung Soomin

Jung Soo-min loves slightly goofy, informal outfits that scream “Hi, I’m American!” Which he is -- born in Chicago. That's about all I know about his background.

Check out his performance, V30, a really sweet cover of “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You,” in which he accompanies himself on the guitar. I think it speaks for itself, but I’ll say a few words anyway. I really like his voice -- sweet, light, a little textured. Great agility, and good performance of the emotion/feeling of the words. Just delightful. I’ll forgive your hat.

Here he is on tiktok talking bout his experience on the show (in English). He says that his attitude toward competition is to just do the best he can, that the competition is really with himself. He seems like a nice guy.

Kim Seongjeong

Seongjeong is a musical actor, and his performance in V16 shows that. It’s not a style of singing that I tend to respond to, but I respect its natural quality and hard-earned technique. Vocally, he wouldn’t at all be out of place on Broadway. Considering his rich timbre and excellent breath support, I’d be interested to hear him sing something more in the pop or r&b style to see what it would sound like. My sleuthing tells me that he’s 25 (born in 1999) and acted in Hadestown and West Side Story. And look at that smile! Totally transforms his face.

Park Joohee

Joohee is another one of the contestants I just can’t find much info on. His teaser song was V15, Stand by Me by SHINee, and it was perfectly nice. Not mind blowing, but easy to listen to. He has good agility and a nice vocal color, but seems to lack breath support -- either that, or he was just really nervous, which seems likely. Also, the camera hardly ever shows him, so it was really hard to get a screencap of him.

in a world without powers, everything works out. he doesn’t get orphaned just shy of his fifth birthday. the boys at school don’t look at him like captive mice in a cage. he gets to be the soccer player he’s always dreamed of. as far as he’s concerned, life would be fucking peachy— or in other words, they’d get what they want. who? the fucking humans, of course.

park jaehyun sinks his canines into his hatred like a rabid dog on a bone. the idea of him buckling under the globe of pressure that they’ve so carelessly balanced atop his shoulders is akin to death itself, perhaps not of the physical body, but of his essence. and perhaps one might argue that life would be better if he just let go of his blind hate and think. but that’s the thing: even if he caved now, if he complied like a well-trained purebred and killed this part of himself, he still wouldn’t get his parents back. he’d still be an orphan, still have the lived experience of being looked upon like a freak. it wouldn’t erase the fact that the very same people had so quickly thrown him in jail and took his life away from him.

it's for this reason that he despises the anomalies who try to play nice. people like sanghyun who decide, against their better judgement, to wipe the slate clean and fall in line. did they forget, so easily, all the things that humans had done to them? did they have so little respect for all that had been taken away? now here is an anomaly from their camp attempting to network, to crash the party with his brainwashed scriptures, and it takes every nerve in his body to stop himself from plucking the guy by the neck and throwing him out. so instead, he settles for second best, brushes shoulders with the anomaly accidentally on purpose while forgetting to watch his strength. the man falls and he snickers, pretends his company’s said something witty to trigger the shit-eating laugh that pours from his chest. he’s had his fun and he thinks to end it there, until he hears the pipsqueak’s voice accusing jaehyun of attacking him on purpose and demanding an apology. jaehyun stops in his tracks, turns so glacially you could hear the creak, and approaches the campaigner. “i barely touched you,” the statement falls as a threat, low and gravelly past near gritted teeth, “if you want, i can attack you. so you can compare.” and just like that, he decides that maybe, he’ll make good on his original plan after all.

Although I Love You and You AKA Sukiyanen Kedo Do Yaro ka

From YTV releasing 1/11 about Soga, who, after a divorce and relocation to Osaka, seeks solace in dining at 26-year-old Sakae's restaurant. Unbeknownst to Soga, Sakae sees him as more than just a regular customer.

Perfect Propose

Fuji TV (the Pornographer series) adapting Mayo Tsurakame’s manga, production team includes Tadaaki Horai (My Love Mix-Up!) and Takeshi Miyamoto (scriptwriter for “Old Fashion Cupcake”). Hiro’s so stressed at work he barely has time to eat so he passes out on the sidewalk. An unfamiliar face saves him and insists that they once promised to marry each other.

Love For Love's Sake

Based on the Manhwa Love Supremacy Zone by Hwacha, this will star actors Lee Tae Vin, Cha Jun Wan, Oh Min Su and Cha Woon Ki. The plot of the drama is based on Tae Myung Ha, a young man who is dropped into a game based off of a novel that he knows. His mission is to make another player, Cha Yeo Woon happy. Cha Yeo Woon is Myung-Has favourite character in the novel. But then the game starts going completely different from the novel.

Love in the Big City

Movie adaptation of Booker nominated famous coming of age novel ‘Love in The Big City’ by Park Sang-Young. A cynical yet fun loving student writer name Young pinballs from home, to class, to Tinder matches. He and Jaehee, his female best friend and roommate, frequent nearby bars where they push away their worries about life, love, and money with soju and Marlboros. But as time passes Jaehee settles down and leaves Young to face his problems on his own, finding comfort in the arms of the series of men, including one whose handsomeness is matched by his coldness and another who might be the great love of his life. Not really BL. To star Kim Go-eun (The King: Eternal Monarch), Noh Sang-hyun (aka Steve Sanghyun as Young) and Nam Yoon Su (The King’s Affection). More here.

The Hidden Moon

Casting happened 9/23. This is a supernatural romance (my ghost boyfriend trope) ‘เดือนพราง’ by Violet Rain. A Bangkok writer is hired to write an article about an old mansion in Chiang Mai which is being converted into a café. He gets into an accident and nearly dies on his way there. After that, he sees the ghosts of people who died at the mansion, one boy catches his attention. Stars Benjamin Brasier (2 Moons 2) and Folk Touch Inthirat from Brothers. Trailer here.

The Next Prince (ZeeNew)

Domundi brings us more ZeeNew in a fantasy/historical set in a palace where Zee plays a knight and Nu a prince - FUCK YES PLEASE. I did not expect this pair to stick so I really hope this happens. Trailer here.

This is totally my kind of BL even if it actually isn't GMMTV's style of BL, so I'm intrigued. Trailer here.

here is the LIST of modeling contracts. make sure to read this post for more information about modeling in general.

contracts highlighted in light purple means that renewal is possible. renewals become impossible if writing requirements haven’t been met and when this happens, they are placed in the “past” column, which is highlighted in grey. the other reason for this is if the muse has completed a around a year with the brand, since it allows the muse to have a free modeling contract slot and take on different modeling gigs, if possible. if the contract is highlighted in either yellow or blue, there’s no action for you to take (example; Ivy Club contracts).

Kim Go Eun ("The King Eternal Monarch," "Little Women," "Yumi's Cells") will be starring with Noh Sanghyun ("Pachinko") for the film adaptation of the best-selling novel "Love in the Big City" by Park Sang Young. When it comes to being in the kitchen with Park Seojin, all bets are off. Much like the form he takes on stage, the person he becomes here is a bit different than his usual self. Suddenly, there is not nearly enough room to walk around in, and the enclosed space brings his senses to the ultimate height. The mere notion of not having total run over the place brings the control freak out of him like no other. He becomes more vigilant, hypercritical.

However, there are ways to neutralize the reaction before it occurs. The other man standing adjacent to him, for example—still managing to look rather dashing in a simple chef's jacket, of all things. ( He supposes that is the aura of a model. )

Lim Sanghyun had an odd affect on his inflamed nerves. All it takes is an utterance from his lips in his calming voice for Seojin to offer an eerily serene sort of smirk. Although, he isn't so sure what he just said in the moment. For all he knew, the guy could have been reciting the periodic table of elements and the result would be the same.

Neither of them were overly gifted when it came to baking, in particular, Seojin's own experience with it limited to things like his insult to muffins filled to the brim with healthy things. He resorted to asking his mother for advice when he learned of this schedule ( her confusion apparent ), searching for some semblance of reassurance. She merely urges him to be patient, just as his boss always did back when he worked at the restaurant.

He exhales a sigh.

After much debate over what to make, the two eventually settled on chocolate éclairs. Challenging, yet simple enough for their novice baking skills.

"Chef Lim," It's a new label—location appropriate. Seojin takes pause to adjust his apron. He impulsively grabs a wooden spoon simply to have something in his hand. "Where should we start first...? Maybe the choux pastery, so it can bake while we do the rest."

Build Up Recap Episode 7 Part 3: Judges’ Saves and Top Tiers

It’s time for another Build Up recap! In the previous post, we saw the final 3x3 death match and found out that judges get to save five contestants! So this post will be devoted to covering the judges’ saves and the eliminated contestants -- it'll be a kind of short one. Let’s do this!

The announcement of the judges’ saves creates a burst of painful hopes for the contestants. It would be so hard not to hope that they call your name, even if you’re pretty sure that they won’t.

The guys in the green room don’t even look that happy. Sanghyun reaches over to his teammate Taewoo and says he hopes the judges will save him (Taewoo).

Ok, quick pause to discuss. Let’s take a look at the list of fifteen eliminated guys:

I thought about the five guys that I would save if I could, and came up with this list of four that I would definitely choose: Bain, Neon, Kim Minseo, and Park Joohee. I just love their voices. I couldn’t decide who that fifth one would be among this list: Driver Yunseo, Jeon Woong, Donghun, and Bitseon. They all seem like decent choices.

Then I thought about who I think the judges will save. I’m pretty sure that they’ll save Donghun, Woong, Joohee, Bain, and Bitsaeon. Let’s see if I’m right!

The judges debate for a bit, and then it’s time to announce their decisions.

The first contestant is one that they were unanimous about, someone who was a “pillar” on the team: Donghun. I knew it! Aww, he looks so happy and relieved.

Wendy announces the next person -- someone who seems to know his own voice now, and who knows how to calculate gestures… It’s BAIN! YAY!!!

Everyone seems really happy for him. Except Geonu, I feel like. Just me? IDK.

The judges talk about how much they love Bain, and Baekho even says Bain was his first place pick. Yay!

Bain is happy too. He says, “I feel like I got another new opportunity.”

Eunkwang announces the next person, who is a trainee who is great despite not having any stage experience. And it’s…. Kim Minseo!! YES!! That’s who I wanted! So far, this is great.

I feel like Bain is happier for Minseo than he was for himself.

He can’t believe it.

Aww! He’s so happy he’s about to pass out. He interviews that it felt better than winning to be recognized like that. I think that’s how I’d feel too.

Solar announces the next person, who was a “rediscovery” on stage: Woong!

His fellow idol Seunghun claps him on the back in congratulations. Woong interviews that he feels sorry that Intae and Minwook couldn’t also survive, but he promises to work even harder.

Now, is it possible, just possible, that production interfered and told the judges to pick Woong? Maybe. He’s popular, he’s funny on camera, he gives good reactions, and he’s in a fairly popular mid-tier idol group. Look, I’m not mad that they picked Woong. I like him a lot as a human, for one thing, and for another, my record will bear out that I have liked his singing voice a lot this whole competition. But the judges picking him does leave one less space for the ones I really want.

Let’s find out who is last. VCG announces the person, who did a great job in every performance, not always standing out but always doing great. And it’s Bitsaeon! Oh, that’s great. I like him.

The whole Bad News team survived after all!

Bitsaeon’s reaction is kind of muted, but that’s probably just because he’s been through an emotional ringer and it’s too hard for him to turn on a dime.

So, this means we are losing the whole maknae team (Ji Yeonwoo, Jeong Yunseo and Park Joohee), the entire Team Mismatch (Lim Sanghyun, Taewoo, and Neon) as well as two members from each of Team Overlooked (Jang Intae and Lee Minwook) and Team Ballad (Yoon Inhwan and Ma Jaekyung).

I’m sad to lose pretty much all of them, except maybe Lim Sanghyun, who I think is maybe not quite cut out for this competition since he won’t sing anything but ballads. However, if you’re a big Sanghyun fan, I found this MV video he put out a year ago. It has less than 10k views and his voice sounds nice in it, so check it out if you like ballads.

I’m particularly gutted -- and surprised, honestly -- to lose Neon and Joohee, both of whom have spectacular voices. I really thought the judges would save Joohee, and I'm shocked that they don't love Neon's voice as much as I do.

I hope we'll get to hear from both of the in the future. I already mentioned this, but seriously, check out this song by Neon. It’s so cool. And here is his Spotify and here is his Instagram. And as far as Joohee and the other trainees go, I bet they’ll debut sooner or later.

Best of luck to all the eliminated guys! Fighting! I’m sure all of them earned a lot of new fans and hopefully also enjoyed spending time with other people who love singing as much as they do.

The guys are all still reeling from the eliminations...

when Dahee announces the next mission right now, from the stage, while the guys are listening to her announcement via cc-tv camera feed. Does the show not want them in the same space as her?

“I am LISTENING. Look at me LISTEN. If an editor wanted to include footage that matches well with communicating that we are LISTENING and they uses this footage of me LISTENING in the final edit that would be ok but that’s not why I’m doing this I am doing this because I am LISTENING” -- Sunyoul, probably

Dahee says that they’re going to form 4-member teams that will last from now until the end. But first, the judges are going to announce the top tier of each surviving team. The guys are irritated -- another Top Tier announcement?

Sunyoul is so irritated! Luckily, if his anger turns to tears he’s wearing that absorbent blazer!

But at least it’s time for best-buds Jay and Geonu to do their little “Top Tier Time” dance.

Naturally, the editors drag it out a bit, but ultimately they announce the winner from each group.

Among Lim Junhyeok, Yeo One, and Lee Gwangseok they chose Gwangseok. No big surprise there, though in many ways I’d say Junhyeok deserves it more. The guys point out how Gwangseok’s status on the show has gone from Top Tier to Low Tier and now back up to Top Tier. Gwangseok, of course, is happy to be back on top!

Next up is Team Taco. Among Geonu, Soomin, and Kim Seohyung, the judges chose Soomin. I mean, did I even need to tell you that?

Among Choi Haram, Hwang Inhyuk, and Sunyoul, they choose Sunyoul. That one was a bit more of a toss up, but I respect their choice. That team was really well balanced and for me any one of them would have been a fair choice.

And among Wumuti, Jay, and Kang Hayoon, they choose Jay of course.

That just leaves the team consisting of Park Jeup, Choi Suhwan, and Seunghun. Obviously, the judges choose Jeup (though after a big of a debate). Now all three of this team have been chosen as Top Tier at some point or another.

Next, Dahee announces that the five top tiers -- Soomin, Jay, Gwangseok, Jeup, and Sunyoul -- have to each go to their own special Small Room of Serious Decisions. As Soomin gets up to leave, teammate Kim Seohyung says, in English, with an eerily good accent, “It was a good life.”

The other guys aren’t sure what’s going to happen, but most of them seem to trust their teammates to do right by them, whatever happens next. Hmm….
