Passage practice with 10 MCQs - 3 & 4
Passage 3 (The Report) Lee sat among the books at the library and thought about his group project. They had to turn it in soon, but he hadn’t even started his part! Jack and Claire were in his group. They had worked hard. They were also very smart, and Lee didn’t want them to get a bad grade. Jack did the report. He wrote a lot of very good sentences and described things with great adjectives.…

As the resident TVC expert, do the books ever address the fact that Armand has a substance abuse problem? I knew he had a familial history of alcoholism through his father but I’m reading TVA for the first time and I feel like I should have been keeping track of how many times he’s mentioned being intoxicated while in Venice. I’ve seen parts of the battle-ax sequence out of context but I never realized until now that Armand explicitly states that he’s also drunk while all THAT™️ is happening
😭 I am so flattered and happy to answer as well as I can, but I promise I really am NOT an expert. I've still only read up through TVA! 💚 I can't tell you if the question of Armand and substance abuse ever comes up in later books, though my suspicion is it won't.
(Also good luck on your reading of TVA! It's... a lot!)
It really is interesting to me that a lot of discussion especially around Daniel/Armand talks about Daniel's addiction but (and it's probably just because people are going based solely on the show which is so fair!!!) doesn't mention Amadeo getting drunk all the time in Venice. That includes the breaking-down-Marius'-door-with-an-axe scene and everything that follows. But the one that really kills me, and to me makes it clearest that Amadeo is turning to alcohol as a coping mechanism, comes earlier:
He was particularly horrified that I'd fallen drunk into the Grand Canal, necessitating a clumsy and hysterical rescue. I could have sworn he went pale at the account, that I saw the color dance back from his whitening cheeks. He whipped Riccardo for it. I was full of shame. Riccardo took it like a soldier without cries or comment, standing still at a large fireplace in the library, his back turned to receive the blows on his legs. Afterwards, he knelt and kissed the Master's ring. I vowed I'd never get drunk again. I got drunk the next day, but I had the sense to stagger into Bianca's house and climb under her bed, where I could fall asleep without risk. Before midnight the Master pulled me out. I thought, Now I'll get it. But he only put me to bed, where I fell asleep before I could apologize.
It's just got so many layers of awfulness - Amadeo falling in the canal comes up a bunch as a fun shenanigan in fic/discussion, which I love, but I also can never forget what follows after it. Marius whipping Riccardo rather than Amadeo but making him watch. Amadeo promising himself he won't get drunk again but then getting drunk again the next day. :/ Running to Bianca's house and hiding under her bed because it is 'without risk' in a way that the palazzo isn't. :\
TVA doesn't ever address it explicitly but I think it's pretty easy and justified to read Amadeo as having a very unhealthy relationship with alcohol, even without taking into account a family history of addiction with his father.
I feel like I've read a handful of devil's minion fics where there are explicit parallels drawn between Amadeo's addiction to Marius' blood and Daniel's addiction to Armand's blood, but I would LOVE to read a fic where like... Daniel and Armand talk about the fact that as an abused teen he was getting drunk every day in a way that was clearly not just 'people drank a lot of wine back in the 16th century'. If anyone has any recs like that I'd love to read them!
#asks#interview with the vampire#rose reads tvc#marius die in a fire for real this time#there was definitely stuff i was braced for in tva from discussions and things that surprised me#amadeo drinking so much was definitely the latter along with the like degree of marius' physical abuse#i hope this helps answer your question anon!#if anyone knows if this comes up in the later books please do reply!#god the writing of that passage kills me

breath of the wild: here's this extremely minor npc who link finds at the broken heart pond, who explains that he'd been looking for the sweetheart pond and got lost. in the dialogue he quickly moves on from bemoaning his own error to hyping up link, encouraging him to find his own people and keep his chin up. he mentions his mother telling him similar supportive things throughout his entire life.
tears of the kingdom: this npc is now trying to join the yiga clan because he thinks learning martial arts and magic will make him seem cooler and get friends/girls. he eventually gives up and link finds him at a stable. once again, he quickly moves on from self-pity, declares himself cool no matter what, and starts to come up with ways that both he and link can find happiness and community. he mentions his mother in the same way again.
me in a prequel to both of those happenings, taking that small amount of characterization way too seriously:
#this passage alone answers so many mask off mimos questions.#why did he join the yiga clan?#why did he choose to help musa specifically?#why did he act so cartoonishly aloof around link earlier on but quickly reveal himself to be earnest and caring?#like yes the mimos love is a Bit but also. i am genuinely so endeared to this fucking character you guys#my writing#mask off#also this is just a huge parallel to the ethos of botw and totk link#going from duty bound silent knight with one goal and attached to one person to goofy world explorer doing sidequests and making friends#i just love the idea of Guy Who’s Lost (Positive)

One of the ways in which people have tried to make sense of the world's suffering in every generation has been by assuming that we deserve what we get, that somehow our misfortunes come as punishment for our sins...
...
The idea that God gives people what they deserve, that our misdeeds cause our misfortune, is a neat and attractive solution to the problem of evil at several levels, but it has a number of serious limitations. As we have seen, it teaches people to blame themselves. It creates guilt even where there is no basis for guilt. It makes them hate God, even as it makes them hate themselves. And most disturbingly enough, it does not even fit the facts.
-Harold S. Kushner, When Bad Things Happen to Good People, p. 12 & 14, 1981.
#jumblr#quotes#grief#emphasis mine#this really struck me because these passages are preceeded and followed by a tragic death#and these thoughts are so important to me because it is so true - and something i wasn't really ever exposed to#the answer i recieved for this question (why do bad things happen to good people?) was the idea of having free will but that's it

I was wondering something and I’d like to know your opinion (or the actual answer if it exists somewhere).
So, Pagan’s father, whose name is Gang Min in the Far Cry 6 Control DLC, appeared in Far Cry: Rite of Passage #2 several months before we saw him in the game, and in Control, he looked the same as he did in the comics:

But do you think he was designed by the Far Cry 6 Season Pass devs who then gave reference pictures to Geraldo Borges and Michael Atiyeh (Rite of Passage’s illustrator and colorist, respectively), or do you think the artists who worked on the comics designed him first and the DLC’s dev team then based the character’s 3D model on how he looked in the comics?
#unimportant question but I’m wondering#does anyone have the answer?#I’d say it was probably control’s art team#but he appeared in the comics first so#I found concept art of ishwari and lakshmana from the dlc but not gang min#far cry rite of passage#far cry 6 season pass#far cry 6 become the villain#far cry 6 control#pagan control#pagan min#gang min

Cuddle anon back again - thank you for your sincere answers before! I was wondering…When you’re cuddling, do you like to play with your partner’s hair? Or have your hair played with?
I’m admittedly most curious about Kurt - you’re just so cute! And your hair looks very soft.
Ask Random Muse Questions || Always Accepting
Kurt chuckles, the compliment earning a slightly lopsided bashful smile. Certainly he's been regarded as cute before, it's not the first time but it's infrequent enough that it's still warming, especially in the face of others who regard him as something closer to demonic. -- ❝Ah- Zhank you, I have had many say my fur and hair is very soft, so I zhink I can firmly confirm zhat to be true.❞ He nods decidedly, his tail waving calmly behind him. Some have described his fur like crushed velvet yet softer, only slightly bristly when one brushes against the grain - not that he encourages that kind of thing. -- ❝I certainly enjoy such attention, even platonically -❞ The man is much like a cat, relishing in such attention, even the briefest of headpats from someone fond of him. He has no shame about such things. ❝But vhen vith a partner I must admit I am quite needy in zhat regard. Having hands brush over my fur, stroking through my hair, it is relaxing and intimate in a vay I cannot quite put into words.❞ There's been a handful of times that need for attention has resulted in him simply flopping onto the lap of a partner, perhaps playful little head bonks should he be in such a mood. -- ❝And I enjoy playing vith zheir hair in return if they enjoy it, though I cannot say it is something I think about or need vith a partner. Zhat is for zheir comfort and I am happy to provide it.❞
-- ❝WOW- can you believe the audacity to ask a hair..-❞ Wade trails off, glaring at Morph.
-- ❝I don't mind my hair being played with, if I'm the right shape. And I love toying with my partners hair.❞ -- ❝What the fuck-? Where's the solidarity here?! JUDAS!❞ Wade's pouting beneath the mask, glaring at Morph for a solid few moments before his arms fold across his chest with a childish harrumph. ❝I don't really think about it, having hair to GRAB though? All about that.❞

Mom: “God why do you give up so easily you can’t expect to be perfect immediately”
well you see mother when I’m not perfect immediately you burst into flames and bite my head off
#Angery#Ranting time but I’m getting yelled at for missing an “easy” mcat question#For misunderstanding how it was written/what it was asking#Like I’m looking at the answer explanation which was basically “it’s correct bc it’s the right answer :)”#And no one’s talking abt it on the internet#So made the fatal mistake of making an off handed comment abt how subjective some of these answers can be#To which she demands to read it and try to “help”#Then is getting angrier and angrier when telling me why it’s correct in a progressively louder voice doesn’t make me instantly get it#Like HEY! I KNOW I made a mistake! If I was perfect at it I wouldn’t need to practice!#That is the WHOLE POINT#But yelling at someone abt it isn’t going to make them ~better~#Also side note but bringing up a creative writing award I won in 10th grade as evidence of how I should be “better than this” is like wtf#Yes I won an award bc the teacher liked me and I wrote some bullshit#It’s not exactly reading an mcat level psychology/sociology passage#once again remembering why I hated those few years of being homeschooled

"εργαστήρια" that are just theory disguised as εργαστήριο should die actually
#like what about 'you have to come and for 2 hours i will just be reading the slides and then I'll give you homework (which is you copying#passages from the book) and then you'll have to learn a book that is 140 pages and answer open-questions' is even close to being εργαστήριο#'before covid we used to go to the hospital and do more things' i dont fucking care. we're not going anywhere now. we're not doing anything#we couldn’t even go to the uni restaurant to see the spatial planning in person! we had to watch it on a video#like we've had so many so called lab classes and most of the ones that were actually labs were during online learning#anyway im too annoyed and i could rant for hours about it but im still on page 3 and i have to go keep studying#jo says stuff#university update

Well the problem might be that you're reading fucking Ulysses.

my adhd problems 💔
#Real talk I speed-read Ulysses for a paper in grad school.#Terrible decision#my paper was so bad (like made outright untrue statements about the book bad)#I think the prof only gave me an B out of pity because it was covid and also it was Ulysses#Anyway the book is written to be kiiiind of unintelligible?#Like it uses totally different writing styles at different moments in order to get its point(s) across#And punctuation doesn't happen in all of them.#(I think one chapter is written like an old question-answer catechism if I remember right?)#It's a good book (from what I remember of it anyway)#But it is EXTREMELY confusing#The main point IIRC is like the inability to create a 100% unified cultural identity for oneself (let alone for an entire nation)#Due to the passage of time and the fact that no one's a complete stereotype of their own culture etc. etc.#And the book intentionally sort of breaks the reading process in order to get across that fractured identity.

POV: You’re yapping about the Irish and your history assignments literally makes zero sense
#The assignment we have asked us a question where there is no answer in any of the passages we were given#‘proof the Irish were considered white people’ my ass. All it is is a bunch of old white men dogging on the Irish.#No one said one good thing about those guys

i never feel as autistic as i do whenever i am taking standardized tests. i feel the neurodiversity in my veins
#today had me thinking HARD about some reading passages because u thought i was taking them too literally#you could literally tell the test was made for neurotypicals just by how they simply brushed off context clues and took them for granted#i was fumbling for a minute. not going to lie#i was afraid i was taking everything literally or misinterpreting the more open questions#i mean those kind of questions where they ask for what's being said in something#and there are LOTS of answers really#but the choices are just so. incomplete and context dependent that it feels wrong#the information you're asking me IS there but not exactly in the way you're asking me for it. does that count?#anyway 1/2 exams for college apps done. we continue#back to studying tomorrow in the usual program

personally i found out that john green, brother of hank green, from the science videos on youtube, who was also in some youtube videos, but less, was the same john green who wrote an abundance of katherines, from the fragment in my english coursebook, multiple times
like i realized this, was shocked, and then forgot, and then realized again.
i think it was 2-4 times across no more than 2 years
Wait so you mean to tell me the whole time I was just like okay some supposedly famous guy named John Green runs a coffee blog, famous due to not the coffee, but he has cool post so I’ll follow him. Now I find out shocking information, that you’re the John Green that makes crash course videos?
My life is a lie and I have worse perception skills than that of a blind deaf weasel
It's weird for me, too.
#it was the opening passage btw#and i have no idea what the questions we had to answer about it were#bis speaks#green

#doing eng past paper for asm rn#and. reading comprehension is somewhat enjoyable when thought about the passage is actually required instead of dissection of what the#marking scheme would require like in in-school exercises??#does this mean the school is not preparing us sufficently for the public exam or#i am actually questioning if my answers are correct and not if the marking scheme would accept it! huh!#has my ability to comprehend gotten worse or is it actually more difficult. i would like it to be the latter but hmm.
