Merry Christmas, y'all and a prayer request and family update
Merry Christmas, y’all. God surely is gracious, isn’t He? This year has been one of tremendous ups and downs. My heart has broken a thousand times this year as some of my children denied their faith. I beg your prayers for them. However, in midst of such pain, the Lord has reconciled a daughter and myself. This is such a huge thing, something I’d prayed for for so many years. She’s a Christian…

Apparently, on twitter, there are some people still unaware of the massive teacher shortage in England and Wales. It does affect some subjects and some geographic areas more than others, so let’s talk about it and the impact on kids and the impact on wider society.
Tumblr media
And you can see here, teacher recruitment in 2022 was down on every measure: https://explore-education-statistics.service.gov.uk/find-statistics/initial-teacher-training-census
Teacher retention is also in a dire state- according to the DfE, nearly 20% of new teachers quit within just 2 years, whilst nearly half leave within 10 years. Meanwhile, NEU surveys show 44% of all teachers are considering leaving the profession in the next 5 years- see here: https://neu.org.uk/press-releases/state-education-profession
These surveys also show more and more schools having unfilled vacancies for teaching or support staff.
What does this actually mean in practice in the classroom?
In 2019, pre-pandemic, I was looking for a new science teaching job. I went to a few interviews, and found a job relatively easily, but all of the interviews I went to had a good field of applicants, and it didn’t seem like vacancies were going unfilled.
Last year, I worked in a school who had a vacancy for a science teacher. We advertised throughout the year, and it took 2 terms to find a suitable applicant. I left my job at that school, and got a new one on the first interview I went to (this is not because I’m amazing, I was the best of a bad bunch, as it were). My job, unfortunately, was not filled for September. Colleagues teaching maths and MFL (among others) also left at the same time and their jobs weren’t filled. Another vacancy was filled with an ECT who would be moving to the area but she couldn’t take up the post due to not being able to find anywhere to rent!
There will be areas of the country where teachers read this, and think actually, it doesn’t look so bad!
I know schools in my county and in the city where I used to work who now have no qualified physics teachers in the school. I know schools making timetable adjustments to ensure all students get time with a qualified science or maths teacher. I know of PE, English, History teachers teaching science or maths. I know of schools where I’d estimate 10% of the workforce is long term supply (who, btw, can just walk out one day and not come back). I know trainees being offered jobs in November of their training year for the following September.
Out of curiosity I keep an eye on teacher vacancies in my county- I’m seeing the same ones being advertised over and over since September. There’s currently over 20 vacancies being advertised for “as soon as possible” starts.
And certainly forget about finding maternity cover for a lot of subjects- teachers have no need to take temporary contracts at the moment!
So, what does this look like for the kids?
It means they get a string of supply teachers, who may change week on week. It means not being taught by subject specialists. It means if their teacher leaves part way through the year (and teachers do) there is almost no chance of that teacher being replaced, and no spare capacity to juggle. Schools try their best to “protect” exam classes, but it doesn’t always happen.
These kids get poorer quality lessons, often little marking/feedback, and run the risk of missing bits of the exam syllabus. Often, they don’t get to do practical work in relevant subjects, or the practical work they do will be more limited. HoDs are stressed sorting cover, and their own classes get neglected. Teachers go off sick with stress, and the class gets a few weeks of cover (or maybe more if things are really bad).
It also means that kids go without form tutors- that first point of pastoral contact- and they might end up feeling like there’s no-one they can go to if they have a problem at school. (I know some kids feel like this anyway, but not having a form tutor or regular teachers can make things feel worse).
In primary schools, it can look like classes being covered by unqualfied TAs. I don’t want to criticise TAs at all, they are amazing BUT they do not have the training a teacher has, and they are paid much less, so usually won’t do planning or marking in the same way- which I don’t think ends up being great for the kids.
Ultimately, teacher shortages are at their very worst in subjects like science and maths, although they are also bad in MFL, Geography and increasingly English. I am not one of those STEM > everything people, but we do need engineers, doctors, HCPs, biomedical scientists, chemists, environmental scientists, and so on. These are the people who build our infrastructure, take care of us when we are ill and develop new treatments, and ultimately make our lives better. If we don’t have good education in these areas, it is a major problem for the country.
Anyway, this is a very long post to say “things are crap in schools right now, and this is why teachers are striking”.

some Aurafangshipping HC bc I love them and a little dash of Delia/Giovanni bc I’m in the mood for somewhat redeemed old men.
\ Ash gets his green thumb from Delia and has forbidden Raihan from touching any of his plants unless under dire situations.
\ Raihan likes to woodwork in his free time, usually he reads but when he’s to fidgety he’s gotta use his hands to do something. so woodworking. he’s kinda has a bartering system with Dawn and Zoey going on.
\ he makes Ash a greenhouse for the plants that can’t fit into the house since there's a shit ton of them. he tries to put down a no more plant rule but he came home from work to see five new ones on the kitchen counter.
\ Raihan also makes Ash a big thing so all his starter plants, like clippings and such, could be in vials of water together in one place. not like how they were before hand, spread across the house and a good chunk of them forgotten since there's so many.
\ Raihan can cook but he can’t bake, which is good because Ash can bake but he can’t cook.
\ Raihan comes from almost a military family, rose not including, so he’s up with the sun even on his days off. unlike Ash who stays in bed until well in to the afternoon if he doesn’t have any plans for the day.
\ Ash is a tea enjoyer at heart though he mainlines coffee on the daily since he’s used to drinking it while travelling. Raihan's slowly been working him off it usually when Ash ask’s for a cup of coffee mid-fucking-day and he offers tea instead. Raihan is the major coffee drinker because he can’t mentally keep up with his much younger gym trainee’s.
\ when their together, Pikachu is always on Raihan’s shoulders. solely for the fact that Raihan is ridiculously taller.
\ Ash is a country music enjoyer while Raihan is more techno. so they compromise and make a playlist with softer songs for when their home and need background noise. it’s not unusual for other gym leaders to walk into the backyard and year a country song switch to lofi after it’s done spill from the open windows.
\ Ash and Raihan’s house is on the outskirts of Hammerlocke, past the walls and deeper into the countryside. they are at the end of a very stereotypical Americanesque white suburb street and have the biggest property, though their house is very modern and large compared to the other two story houses.
\ Ash tries to make friends with the neighborhood kids on his walks with Pikachu almost every morning, saying hi to them at the bus stop as they head to school, but they don’t really greet him back. not because they don’t want to but because their parents don’t trust Ash.
\ they trust Riahan, which Ash can get behind because he is the towns famous Gym Leader, but it get’s annoying quick when they keep implying that Ash is a maid of all things when they show up on their shared porch steps.
\ just like the neighborhood, very stereotypical neighbors as well. they even have two different pastors living in the neighborhood as well. every house is apart of an HOA while Ash and Raihan are the outliers, probably why they don’t want their kids near Ash. Hypocrites.
\ The front door is always locked but the back isn’t, so a lot of the league members that are close to Ash and Riahan just unlock the fence door and go that route, completely ignoring the front. they’ve had the police called to their house a lot because of it.
\ Raihan actually likes rougher fabrics since they tend to with hold up against the weather effects he finds himself in multiple times a day but he switches into a pair of softer clothes before heading home since Ash has a thing against rougher textures. it’s funny because he tries so hard not to touch Raihan’s chest in the morning when giving the taller a goodbye kiss, and every morning he ends up having to touch the others shirt to get a good angle. making gagging noises when they pull back from each other.
\ despite being quiet wider in shoulder length and older then Raihan, Giovanni is absolutely terrified of Ash’s lover. Delia immediately gave her approval once she saw Raihan tower over her husband at the first family event Ash dragged him too. scared the shit out of Lance as well and Delia basically told Ash if he doesn’t marry Raihan then she will.
\ Raihan isn’t a fan of Professor Oak, preferring to work with either Tracey or Gary than the old man, but keeps his comments to himself since Ash still tolerates him. the old coot has done some pretty not okay things to Gary and Daisy when they were younger but Ash assured him that Gary and Him terrorized Oak back when they were younger.
\ out of the two, Raihan has only met Burnet despite staying in Alola for two weeks at a time during the start of Galar’s off season. it’s not for lack of trying on both men parts, it just seems like the universe doesn’t want them to meet. Raihan doesn’t question it when Ash finds that particularly funny.
\ it takes a long while for Raihan to even begin to get used to the really small legendary and mythical's. for his comfort Ash had made a no godly pokemon in the house rule unless under dire situations like one needed to be stitched up or to hide them from poachers.
\ it’s a sight for the neighborhood to see Zacian getting washed and sprayed down with a hose by Ash, all the while Raihan is either seen in the front window or standing in the open front door.
\ dinner party’s are a big thing to them since Ash and Raihan didn’t grow up with a social family. all are welcomed to bring extra dishes or other things or show up empty handed. they just want everyone to bring good vibes to dinner.
\ Piers and Gordie share one out of the two shared bedrooms, the other is for Ash’s moms or visiting friends, and it’s such a mess inside from the two oposit styles that both Riahan and Ash refuse to clean anywhere inside.

it’s strike evening! tomorrow teachers in england and wales start on a series of discontinuous strike days, over teacher pay and funding.
i have had this long post of anecodates the state of state education right now sitting in my drafts for months. but i think it’s a good time to share it. there are no graphs or national statistics—you can get those from the neu, and if you’re reading this you probably know them already. but i think it’s worth sharing the personal side of why we’re striking as well. this is very disconnected, and rambly, and frustrated, but here goes:
i’m a physics graduate. i trained to teach at one of the largest ITT providers in the country a few years ago. there were about 25-30 physics trainees in this batch
at least ten have already left the profession, or left the country to teach elsewhere. this is not including people who left state education to teach in independent schools, or people who dropped out during the training year
i trot this statistic out a lot, because it’s shocking—this year, we have recruited one physics teacher for every eight state schools in england. that’s just trainees recruited. several of them will drop out during the training. even more will leave during their induction period (25% of new teachers leave within two years). it gets worse every year
over the last two years, i have watched my school (a comprehensive secondary) try to replace, or find long-term supply, for several staff—maths teachers, science teachers, MFL teachers, technicians, pastoral staff, etc. pretty much every time, it’s taken at least 3 months to find a long-term replacement. the ‘revolving door of supply staff’ is very true, and supply staff are also hard to find
nationally, schools are ridiculously tight on money. this hits the poorest areas and kids worse—we push up every class to 32 students because that means more money for the school, we turn what were previously free trips into paid ones because schools can’t afford to cover the costs, we turn off the heating at 4pm, we cut TAs and extra-curriculars and sports and equipment budgets. this is a funding crisis as well as a staff pay crisis. a non-funded pay rise is useless
these are not hypotheticals btw—they have happened and are happening in my school and in schools near me. we are cutting trips, clubs, TAs, mentoring support, you name it. if it can be cut it will be.
the easiest way to cut costs is by cutting down on staff. so all our timetables are as full as it is legally possible to be. there is no breathing room. one class can be shared by multiple staff to make this timetable mess work. staff are stretched to their limit, and if someone falls sick long term, there’s no staff free to cover and – see above – we cannot recruit! so we return to a revolving door of supply staff (whom we also can’t get)
the cuts to additional support affect kids with SEND needs, emotional needs, kids who are having a hard time, etc the most. i cannot tell you the number of kids i have who need a TA or a mentor and don’t get one, need counselling, need a reader, need a scribe, need 1-to-1 EAL support, etc..... it goes on
and at the same time social services across the board have been slashed after years of tory austerity. camhs is a mess, the nhs has no money, youth services are gone, libraries and community centres are shut—we are trying to fill a gaping hole, with no goddamn money
and on the note of staff pay—support staff especially don’t get paid enough, but across the board, I’m hearing of colleagues using food banks, not being able to afford heating or feeding themselves or children, struggling to make rent, etc. especially for early career teachers, it’s not enough. I know of plenty of colleagues who took on additional responsibility way earlier than they wanted or were ready for, because it means extra pay, and the standard salary isn’t enough to live on.
couple that with the fact that in a subject like maths or science, there are plenty of entry-level jobs that pay much better, and it’s no surprise people aren’t coming into the profession.
i care deeply for my students. i want the best for them. they deserve teachers who are not overworked, exhausted, and bitter. they deserve subject specialists, not four months of rotating supply teaching their GCSE chemistry class. they deserve staff who feel valued, and thus stick around long enough that they can build relationships with them. they deserve enough lab equipment, textbooks, glue sticks. they deserve extra curriculars and trips they don’t have to pay for, that aren’t funded out of whatever I can spare from my own tight budget that month. they deserve dedicated TA support where they need it, again, with TAs who are valued and have time to build connections with them and support them.
and i am also tired, and i care deeply for my colleagues. we all deserve better.
so i am striking tomorrow, for my students, and my colleagues, and myself, because i deeply love this profession and it deserves so much better than a government that clearly doesn’t value educators or education. if you can, join us on the picket line at your local school, or at a march! there’s a strike map in the notes.

Catch up with old friends
10th March 2023
Some of you may remember I first met Joshua Ssebunnya in the British Houses of Parliament. I had just encountered Professor Fred Kigozi, whose name I had known for many years as a prolific Ugandan researcher in mental health. I asked him who could help us train people in the mhGAP programme, and he pointed to Joshua.
Joshua is a master trainer who learnt his mhGAP trade at the World Health Organisation in Geneva. He has been a great friend to Jamie’s Fund in providing the training that we give to the small number of specialist psychiatric staff (PCOs and psych nurses). They then cascade the programme to their general colleagues in medicine, surgery, midwifery and so on.
Tumblr media
Boda bodas get everywhere
In this way, we’ve been helping to bridge the gap: too few specialists and too many people with mental illness and epilepsy means there is a gap in getting access to treatment. So far we’ve trained about 1000 staff in mhGAP. You’ve helped to support that if you are a JF donor!
On this trip we’ve been so encouraged to hear how the gap is indeed being bridged; mhGAP is making a real difference to people’s access to care. Physicians doing their rounds are hearing much more about the whole patient, not just their physical symptoms.
And this progress is extended with the Community Leaders’ programme which teaches key people such as local clan chiefs, teachers, pastors and police how to identify mental illness and where modern treatment can be found.
We usually have plenty to talk about with Joshua, and Friday morning was no exception. All through a heavy rain storm we talked most of the morning and he stayed for lunch with me while Ewan went to take part in a Zoom call. Both Ewan and I are in the midst of research projects in which you might call Joshua our field officer.
Tumblr media
Perhaps an excuse for a "Chelsea tractor" ?
That afternoon we made our way across the city again, through the very large puddles created by the heavy rain, up and down the potholes, as the boda-bodas wove their way between the cars and lorries.
Tumblr media
The access road - it is rougher than it looks.
You get to St Stephen’s Hospital down a rather steeply sloping road. It’s a Health Centre IV, the highest level of health centre, like a small hospital. Here we meet old friends Olivia, the bright and chatty administrator, and Reagan, the tall and very serious clinical officer.
Tumblr media
A view of the area they serve - high density, low cost housing.
Reagan reminded us that they serve an urban population, many of them shifting here and there, trying to find affordable housing, and with high rates of extreme poverty. There is also the fact that within reasonably easy reach of St Stephen’s are three government health centres or hospitals , where patients can get their medicines free of charge. The private-not-for-profit units have to charge – not a lot, but often it’s too much for our patients. You might say that St Stephen’s is in a competitive market!
Tumblr media
Reagan clinical officer and Olivia, the efficient administrator.
Tumblr media
Cycling is not that common - you have to accept you are the lowest form of wheeled life.
As you know we support a number of trainee PCOs. Here are Eseza and Miria, who came for a meal and a catch up with us. We look forward to them finishing their course in June or so this year. They will return to their respective hospitals, and will get stuck into leading mental health service development.
Tumblr media
Having a meal with Eseza and Miria
We drove back in the night time traffic.
Tumblr media
Why we avoid driving at night as far as possible. This includes unlit bicycles, motorcycles, pedestrians, cars etc.

On the Thanatological Presuppositions of Our Preferences in Talking About Death (or Passing Away)
Enjoying some conversation in the professional religious blogosphere this evening around the preference of terms used to speak about death, and specifically, the use of more or less precise, (and more or less near synonyms) such as “pass” as in “passed away.”
I remember this being a big deal in parts of the CPE world some years ago. As the lesson of the day, many a trainee chaplain would proudly peacock in their case studies their newfound ability to invoke such language to invite grieving family members and friends to consider the finality of their loss as something of a catalyst toward *real* grief (and to be fair, hopefully, real healing). Personally, I always found it at least a bit problematic.
Language is assuredly important. But the clinical/professional pastoral grievance toward terms perceived to be somehow less precise than “died” is completely charged with presuppositions- theological, thanatological, or ontological, whatever way you want to spin it, that ultimately come down to assumed sub-cultural superiorities.
Language changes and adapts, and sometimes it does so in ways that bely original word meanings (which may or may not prove more accurate). In this case, I do so enjoy that the etymology of the word “pass” ultimately traces back to the root “pete-“ meaning “to spread.”
In that sense, namely of aggregates spreading out, and stretching beyond the limits of recognizable personhood, I find some real precision amidst the softness that the word (pass) otherwise carries for what, in the moment, is quite a delicate matter.
In any case the true pastoral response, both clinical and professional, is never rote. Rather, it is rooted in the wisdom of the moment, following those we’re walking with to the places they need to go, so that we might understand, bear witness, reflect, and when needed, accurately interpret and guide.

The man who pulled me out while I was struggling to save myself from drowning
I came from a middle class fam. My father was re-electing for the Mayor at that time. Everything was going well but I was emotionally struggling with myself. I was not good at telling people what I really feel. I let everything consume me until everything within me was getting heavy. I was totally good at hiding that I was not okay. Maybe because in a Filipino household, we don't really talk about feelings, emotions and things that are deep. I don't know but we tend to avoid that topic. My thoughts were drowning me and I don't know how to get back up. Even tho I tried travelling to places, hiking, camping it did not heal the pain and sadness that I was feeling inside. And there I realized that it was not the place nor the people around me that made me feel that way. It was me, I made myself feel that way.
It was 2019 when I prayed for the Father to save me because I was drowning and darkness was consuming me. That time even tho I knew that the things I was doing were not right, I still did it because it made me feel okay for a while. It was like an addiction that helps me cope up with myself. And sometimes suicide crosses my mind. I have done things that my family or my colleagues wouldn't imagine that I'm capable of doing. Maybe because I was always the sunshine and rainbows.
I can still remember I was doing good, physically, at that point of my life. It feels like everything was going well. My parents and siblings were supportive of me, I was excelling in my studies, I have friends that are helping me out and everything I needed was well provided but then there was a missing piece. I was still lost in a room full of people.
I know people would think how blessed I am for what I have physically but there's this sadness that was consuming me and I don't know how to overcome it so I prayed and I got my answer through Pastor Apollo C. Quiboloy. 2018 when I first heard about Pastor's preaching, I felt something was different about Him so I continued to attend His live TWP until the time that I became busy at school so I stopped attending for a while. 2019 came and I was emotionally breaking down. I was at my lowest I felt like I'm drowning with sadness and pain and I don't even know where it's coming from and all I could do was cry. I can still remember, one time I was crying so much that I can't even utter a word but then I remember that tears are silent prayers and I know that it travelled to Him because my prayer was answered when the pandemic came. A privilege was given to me when one of the ministers asked me to train in SMNI Makati. And without anything in mind, I said yes. I dropped off school immediately and left everything behind. I was just a trainee at that time but then there was something about the ministry that made me decide to stay and fill-up on becoming a Full-time Miracle Worker even tho my understanding was not yet deep at that time I still decided to enter because I believe in Pastor's preaching and I am also in need of salvation. He was the light that lightened up the darkness within me. He was the one who changed me from within. He is the one who taught me about all the things that are missing within me. I was tainted but He did not see that, He totally saw what I'll become. He saw all my flaws but still helped me overcome. He pulled me out from drowning. He made my life so much better. I wouldn't be able to continue this journey if it wasn't because of Him. Thank you so much Pastor.
In my generation most of my colleagues are fighting a battle within themselves and I advise you to seek the Almighty Father because He is the giver of true happiness.
And to all of you reading this it was my choice to be here. No one forced me to enter and it is still my choice to stay no matter what because I believe in the ministry of the Appointed Son of God.
To all of you that know me while I was still outside, you know I'll never talk about things like this but with everything that is happening right now, I can't help but speak up. To the one reading this, if you really want to know who Pastor is I encourage you that you pray for it. Ask the Almighty Father who He is and He will reveal it to you.
Note: You cannot judge someone just by hearing the other side of the story.

Nigerians have no business with poverty – Catholic Bishop
The Catholic Bishop of Ekiti Diocese, Most Rev. Felix Ajakaye, on Thursday declared that there was no justification for Nigerians to be poor, saying the country is blessed with enormous resources enough to make the citizens lives more abundantly. Ajakaye called on political leaders in Nigeria to eradicate poverty in the country, live by example and make citizens welfare central to their hearts and programs. Bishop Ajakaye, noted that governments both at states and Federal level, should put in place measures to ensure that Nigerians live a life of dignity in human persons. Ajakaye made the remarks at the graduation ceremony of vocational skills trainees and distribution of Start-Up Kits for 400 persons trained by Caritas Nigeria, in Ekiti State. The Non-profit organization established by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, with the theme: “Building Sustainable Livelihoods in Vibrant Community (B-SLiC) Project, was held at the Pope John Paul II,  Pastoral Centre,  in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State capital. Also, speaking Rev. Fr. Babangida Audu, the Deputy Executive Secretary, Caritas Nigeria, and Bishop Ajakaye, both urged Nigerians, the government and the citizens, to work together to ensure that poverty is eradicated, due to the abundant natural resources deposited in the country. “Nigeria has no reason to be poor, but sadly enough, we are still far away from good governance, bad roads, unemployment, and poverty in the land” The religious leaders noted that there is failure in the society, pointing to the fact that both government and citizens should be blamed in this regard. “If we want to eradicate poverty in Nigeria, we can do it, but our government and citizens must mean it, not about the government alone, let everybody be involved in the process. “Government should be able to provide an enabling environment, where people can be able to help themselves and create an environment where people can learn skills. “Citizens on their own should be willing to take up their responsibilities. Government cannot cater for all, but if you show your skills and develop interest, it will be better for society. The clerics commended the donors’ agency for the empowerment of the less privileged in the society in Ekiti State for the (B-SLiC) project. The Director of Humanitarian Service, Caritas Nigeria, Nkese Udongwo, said the idea is to train the vulnerable on life skills for people to generate income for themselves and the community. According to her, they were trained in tailoring, beads/bag making, shoe making, carpentry, phone repairs, aluminum, electrical, mechanic and catering works”.  They all went home with their certificates and start-up kits. The Chairman, Ado-Ekiti local government, Chief Bosun Osaloni, called on the beneficiaries to make good use of the “Start-Up Kits” presented to them, cautioning them not to sell them, but to use them to get out of poverty. Dear Future Me
Hi. How is it going? I hope you're happier than I am today. I hope you're in a brighter, fuller place in life. I hope your life has been fruitful. If not, that's okay. If we ended up sinking lower, if we end up getting sucked into a deep dark hole again, it's okay. We got out before, we can get out again. We just need to keep the faith and keep going forward. It doesn't matter how many times we fall. We can and we will get back up again. So cry as many tears as you want, shout as loud as you want, and grieve as much as you want. But never, ever give up. Past Us didn't, I didn't, so You wouldn't.
All those dramas aside, let's recap where I am right now. We are currently an Intern leader at church. Past Us never thought that would be possible. yet here I am. Hopefully, by the time you're rereading this, you'd be a Leader. We've also done a lot of training in terms of our knowledge and understanding of the Lord. I haven't bore fruit yet but hopefully, You would. I've been putting a lot of pressure on you, aren't I? Sorry.
We met someone in the church. He's a Pastor and I really really like him. He's smart, he looks good, dressed well, he's very good at preaching the word. Also, remember that time when we first went to church in Victory last February 2022? That was also the time when we were at a low point in life. He was that preacher back then. He was still a trainee pastor back then I believe, we almost cry at the message he was preaching because it speaks to us and to what we are going through so much. I don't remember the message he preached though but I remember the feeling. We started liking him a few months back, around May 16 I believe, and we haven't stopped. We actually like him more and more each day. He just felt so right, unlike everyone who came before him. He felt different. He felt safe. He felt 'home'.
Sadly though, he hasn't noticed us yet. And worse, it seems like there's someone already. At least that's what the other Church leaders are implying about the last Leader's Convergence. We don't know for sure yet. I'm hoping it's not true. The first time we heard them teased him about it, our first reaction was panic. Like I wanted to actually shout 'No. That can't be.' then I felt our heart sink, and crashed. I literally felt pain in my heart at that time. I wanted to just sink into the ground and cry.
If that's true, it's fine. He deserves to be happy. I wouldn't go out of my way to pray that it fails so we can have our chance. We're not like that. If that's what is going to make him happy, and if that's the Lord's will in his life then who are we to interfere. All we can do is wait and pray.
Things aren't going well at work too, but that is the least of my worries. I feel like I don't belong in this field of work. It doesn't feel right. I want to pursue a position that is connected to Industrial engineering. And lately, I've been feeling that push get stronger every day. So maybe I should listen. Hopefully, your career is better than mine right now.
I hope and pray all the best for you! I won't stop fighting for a better life for you so I hope you don't stop fighting too. Seek the Lord and keep the faith.
Love,
Past You

“At home” in Kisiizi, and encouraging developments
2nd March 2023
“At home” in Kisiizi, and encouraging developments
2nd March 2023
Tumblr media
In one of our conversations at Kisiizi, Moses the hospital secretary reminded us that Kisiizi was our “second home”. Our welcome certainly suggested that we were part of the family. How lovely.
Georgious is the Psychiatric Clinical Officer who leads the mental health service at Kisiizi. His report was exciting as he told us of new developments and possibilities. And perhaps most importantly, we heard Georgious’s enthusiasm, leadership and vision.
Tumblr media
The ward and patient shelter
mhGAP training, sponsored by JF, has proved to have had remarkable results.
When Covid struck, and senior mental health professionals couldn’t travel to the outlying clinics, the newly trained staff at the rural health centres carried on providing mental health treatment and support as they now know what to do.
A young clinician trained in mhGAP has been promoted to in-charge of the mental health ward.
Prima, who qualified in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, was inspired to renew her adult mental health skills by mhGAP training.
Tumblr media
On her way to school
Georgious is much more confident that if he has to be absent, the young team collaborate to share the responsibility of caring for the patients together. Georgious is in no doubt that mhGAP has made a significant difference. He says that staff are eager to apply their new knowledge and skills, and he can see the development in the way they work. His newly trained colleagues say they are not just wanting to pass exams as they were during their studies, they really want to use what they have learnt. And a good proportion of the mhGAP trainees have continued to practise their new skills.
Georgious has also led the workshops for Community Leaders’ Sensitisation. He says there is now clearly much better understanding of the nature of mental illness and epilepsy. The mental health team have a very good partnership with local teachers, and the police continue to refer potential patients.
Perhaps most excitingly, some of the pastors have really begun to change both their thinking and their practice. One pastor, for example, has identified 12 people who might have epilepsy or mental illness, brought them to the hospital, and stayed with them as they were assessed and started on treatment. He is now following them up and ensuring that the patients continue with their treatment.
This is a wonderful development, as the local church pastors are key people in their communities. Both we and Georgious are very hopeful that many more might follow this example.
If you have contributed to Jamie’s Fund in the last few years, your donation has helped to bring about all of this remarkable progress. Thank you so much for that.
Tumblr media
Mobile phones get everywhere!
Georgious would like to expand the workshop programme to district level – he says that the district teams meet many patients and have the potential to be very supportive. Conversations with Kuule, who works at Bwindi hospital, have encouraged Georgious to make plans also to sensitise Village Health Volunteers – more key players in the life of village communities.
We were pleased that Dr Henry, the relatively new Medical Superintendent, was listening closely to  Georgious’ report. Together with Moses we needed to have some discussion on matters less encouraging and more challenging. The team lost a patient to suicide recently, and this has provoked a renewed discussion on security, and their protocols on risk assessment and observation.
Another challenging issue is the number of patients who stay too long! Several patients have been left on the ward and abandoned by their families. In some cases they can’t even tell the team where they come from. In spite of best endeavours using community networks to try to trace the families, these have failed. The ward is left with these people who are technically no longer patients and have long been ready for discharge. Others are held until the families come to pay the fees due.
Kisiizi’s aim has always been “care for the vulnerable” and the management see this group of people as in that category. But the situation means that the mental health service has a big bill assigned to it, even when these individuals should not be there and aren’t a cost in terms of mentally illness. It is more a social work issue. This is a huge challenge. There is also an imbalance of unwell and well people, and too many extra beds down the middle of the wards.
We also talked of the Good Samaritan Fund, which provides for patients and families who cannot afford to pay for their psychiatric medicines. Georgious is of the view that if they could further expand community services and keep people well, patients would be less likely to relapse and need comparatively expensive medication. I think he is right.
When we were here last year we were struck by the negative impact of covid. It seemed to us that the whole country was depressed. This time it’s not so obvious, but there are still some concerns.
There is increased poverty, and fewer patients attending the hospital, resulting in a lower income. Patients not attending means they don’t get care from the team, and they probably don’t get medicine either, resulting in a higher number of patients relapsing.
There are psychosocial effects: increased rates of gender based violence, for example. Children have not been in school, and Georgious feels that many of them are losing hope. Some teachers took to alcohol during lockdowns.   Higher pregnancy rates in girls and young women have negative results in many ways.
Families are less likely to afford medication because they have so little income; in addition, the drugs have became much more expensive, something we’ve seen around the world.
Kisiizi Hospital has, as always, tried to help the most vulnerable, and the School of Nursing has provided food for poorer patients where relatives cannot prepare meals for the inpatients.
The discussion took much of the morning. You remember that in a previous blog one of the sisters said they appreciated us coming because they felt loved. Moses commented that “when Ewan and Mo come it’s like an Annual General Meeting”!
But he also reminded us that “even if it’s a flying visit it’s important for us.” It’s important for JF too – we need to know that the funds you donate and we distribute are being put to the best use.
They are.

The vehicle bought by JF years ago with funds raised from a sponsored cycle. Still going well and 190,000 km on the clock.

St. Joseph the Worker
Pope Francis recently came back from his visit to Hungary, a country that border’s the Ukraine, and during that visit he visited with refugees and people in need. I recently posted on the following insight that he offered during that visit.
Genuine faith is challenging, it takes risks, it leads us to encounter the poor and, by the witness of our lives, to speak the language of charity.
Today being the feast of St. Joseph the Worker we are aware that the asylee and refugee community that we serve needs resources that will help them find employment and some form of economic security. Many of the people we serve come from areas throughout our world that suffer from economic and social instability. Here in Brooklyn and Queens we have seen many of these asylees who are currently in shelters and temporary hotels as they strive to find employment. During this feast of St. Joseph the Worker we recognize that one of our principles of Catholic social tradition is the dignity of work. As part of our shared human dignity we know that we have the privilege of expressing this dignity through the sacred work that we do.
Tumblr media
Pope Francis tells us that “the language of charity” is an essential part of our faith. As part of our contribution to this essential language is helping this community, who literally have nothing but the clothes on their back and, if lucky, a small backpack with all their worldly goods, find the opportunities to gain employment. As part of our commitment we offer classes to help them work in construction and general industry through the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) classes.
Here in Brooklyn and Queens, we have been able to offer these OSHA courses at St. Pius V, St. Martin of Tours, St. Gabriel and St. Michael’s Church. Today Fr. Fulgencio, the Pastor at St. Michael’s Church, imparted the blessing of St. Joseph the Worker on these trainees and offered the following prayer for this community.
Dear God, Our Creator and Savior, the gifts and talents that have been given to us by you are in need. We will use them how you see fit and in accordance with Your Divine Will. Through Saint Joseph the Worker , being our guide and model, may I find employment and work, and provide for those that may depend on me financially for support.

Sun Myung Moon calls Moonies to bribe
Tumblr media
Don Diligent posted the following speech on July 23, 2016, with a title asking, "Rev. Moon told the members it wasn't bribing! So, what was it then?"
To Belvedere Trainees - Reverend Sun Myung Moon - August 29, 1974
From today, three weeks are left. All trainees, including David Kim, will be mobilized to participate in this Madison Square Garden Crusade…Your assignment is to contact churchgroups and school groups. Up to the present we have been contacting just on the individual level. This area is wide open, so he assigned you people to contact schools, communities, and churches, where masses of people can be mobilized. Father is even thinking of making an exchange and going to high-school principals or assistant principals and saying, “Why don’t you mobilize three thousand young people to come to Madison Square Garden? We can even give you some contribution later…Whatever they need, then we will give it to them, something as a donation or subsidy, if they really send three thousand to Madison Square Garden. You can approach church members, high schools, even colleges and universities…This is not necessarily bribing, we will help them later! We can easily mobilize these people by giving an incentive. Then later, if they don’t send people, we won’t give them anything…If we give money earlier, that’s bribing. But if we say, "If you send these people, then we will give something to your church, your school, or whatever. We will arrive at a figure later. ” We will see how many tickets are from each school with a special mark on them. Then later, according to the quantity, we will give them a gift of appreciation. If you give money, that’s illegal. So, in order to get his church members to come to the crusade, the minister will have to tell his group things about Reverend Moon. Than they will have to say, if they send people they will receive a gift from us. Later this will be very effective. Then why is this plan necessary? It is necessary for future mobilization of the manpower. Once we make this kind of channel, later for Yankee Stadium, we can just send a letter saying, “Please come,” and suddenly they will be mobilized. Masses of people will come and that will be a great sensation. If we are successful with this kind of system without any big advertisement, automatically all people will appear at Madison Square Garden or whatever place we designate. That will be a great accomplishment. After successful results in Madison Square Garden, we will make a contract for Yankee Stadium. Then later half a million people, will appear in Washington. Even later, ten thousand buses can be chartered, and right there 500,000 people may be easily mobilized. By that time, you will be a leader in this new kind of project. This will be an experimental case. And based on this kind of occasion, more scientific research will follow. So the future mass mobilization plan will be based on our work. Do you understand? We are not bribing though. We give them the promise, “We’ll give you this kind of gift.” We don’t necessarily say Reverend Moon. So all you PR people will go to the higher levels, deans, pastors, and work it out. We will silently give this kind of pledge. This kind of a system should be well organized, with very experienced people. Leaders should be approached very decently. If you do it in the wrong way, then some bad rumors will spread. You have to think, because at the moment, some seat costs $50.00, so, if I bring 100 people, I am saving $47.00 per ticket. This campaign is very costly. That’s why we hired Dentsu, a news media company. So your mission is to contact schools, universities, and colleges and give out mass tickets. If a bad rumor spreads that the Unification Church bought people, this is unnecessary. This promise will be fulfilled after they send the people with tickets. If the church or school says, “We don’t need your help,” that’s fine. But, from our point of view, because they are mobilizing we have to give them something as a gift. Do not give the impression that we are buying people to come. No, this is an entirely different concept. If this rumor spreads in the news media, we are in trouble. You have to negotiate several times, and then when the atmosphere is right and they have promised to come, then we will give the promise. Ask the minister how many he can send. If he says 38 people, ask,“ Why don’t you send 90 people? Why don’t you send 110? Then, after it is over, we can give a donation to your church. ” That kind of thing can be talked over, but not on the first day. Then you go to the minister of a congregation with 1,000 members, “How many can you send? 300? Why not more? if you send more, later, we will donate.”He is giving the guideline right now. You just contact them gradually, then you will give even 1,000 tickets to one church! That kind of contact should be privately and confidentially approached. First survey and investigate, so we have got to have an organizational chart. It will be good for both sides, for us because they come to our Crusade, and for them because we give them something.Make categories, “A,” “B,” “C,” and systematically tabulate the percentage of opposition or support, and how many Catholics, Baptists, Presbyterians, liberals or conservatives. That kind of thing will be automatically tabulated. Then statistics will come out for future plans. This will be very helpful for national projects. So, because of your effort you can visit them any time, even after the Madison Square Garden crusade. We will have this kind of gigantic influence…You have to approach higher levels…From tomorrow on, you will be really actively involved. This is an emergency situation.
