"Ce livre est né d'une découverte exceptionnelle : un manuscrit inédit de la main de Marcel Mauss, qui permet de mettre au jour un cycle complet de leçons du sociologue Emile Durkheim sur le crime et la peine. Le XIX ? est le siècle des hygiénistes : on s'affole devant l'éventuelle contagion des comportements "déviants". L'anthropologie criminelle affirme le caractère pathologique du crime et propose pour la première fois une typologie des criminels. Cette perspective positiviste, Durkheim la renverse radicalement : pour lui, c'est l'influence de la société, plutôt que les caractéristiques intrinsèques des individus, qui permet d'expliquer les différentes formes de criminalité. Gimme Shelter (of the Backyard Cold War Kind) by Mark Sceurman

Many of us who were brought up during the cold war period, from 1958 to the early 1960s, remember the school drills for “duck and cover.” If you were a student, you were ushered to the ground floor of the school and told to get on your knees and put your coat over your hand. You would then wait, intensely listening for the sirens that would signal a nuclear attack was imminent. The NJ school system issued a dog tags for every student, and the rumor was that the tags would withstand a nuclear blast, in case your body needed to be identified when the Big One was dropped. 

Yellow-and-black fallout shelter signs were posted on larger buildings to let you  know that if an attack did take place while you were out and about, you would have safe refuge, at least for the moment. 

Backyard bomb shelters were also being built for the safety of the family, and some still exist throughout the state. Weird N.J. was invited to see a backyard bomb shelter in Clifton; it was completely stocked with food and water from 1961, with virtually nothing touched in the last forty years. 

Patrick DeLager, whose parents had the bomb shelter built, tell us his story. “One day this salesman came to the door and told my father, ‘If you want to protect your family, you have to buy one of these bomb shelters.’ After talking to my mom, they decided that, ‘Well, we gotta save the kids!’”

Weird N.J.: How was the bomb shelter made?

They brought in a big steam shovel and dug the whole backyard up. They flatbedded in this giant metal tank. It also had a few other big pipes for the shaft, ladders, and the escape hatch. 

Weird N.J.: Do you know of any other bomb shelters in the area?

None that I know of. But everybody in the neighborhood knows this one’s here. When I was younger, I always got to be quarterback in the football games because if I wasn’t, well then, the other kids couldn’t go into the bomb shelter if we were attacked! 

Weird N.J.: What kind of supplies did your father keep down there?

There are old boxes of cake mix, soup, sugar, baking powder, etc. But I don’t really know how they planned on using or cooking the stuff. He did replenish the supplies once in a while. I think he had a box of cereal that he mixed with chloroform to keep it safe!

Patrick opened the weathered, cone-shaped hatch in the middle of the backyard, and we saw a three-foot-wide cylindrical tube with a metal ladder attached to it. Shining a flashlight into the hole, we saw that it went down at least twenty feet. It was full of cobwebs.

Weird N.J. correspondent Dean Cole was the first to enter. Next went Mark M. and myself, followed by Patrick, his sister Marie Gerhart, and their friend Janet Martin.

Reaching the bottom, we entered a small cement chamber that led into the shelter. The safe room was no more than twelve feet long and about seven feet wide. It was actually not much more than a round metal tank-and with six people, it was getting more claustrophobic every minute. Since the walls were round, one got the feeling that the room was spinning. Either that or the air was getting thinner. 

“Wow, your parents really stocked up on the sugar,” Mark M. said, noting the forty to fifty pounds of vintage Sucrest stashed away beneath the wooden benches. 

“Well, that was for the coffee,” Patrick said. 

Dean pulled out a can of Tropical Treat fruit drink, a little weathered and rusted but still sealed. 

“Condensation has ruined most of the stock,” Patrick said. 

We started to pull out boxes of cake mix, peanut butter, and bottles of water and instant coffee purchased at Two Guys. We even found some aspirin. 

“I think the aspirin is still good because, you know, there were no expiration dates back in the ‘60s!” joked Patrick. 

The escape hatch was bolted and filled with sand, and there was a hand-cranked air vent that allowed fresh air to be brought in. Patrick explained the theory of the hatch: “In case you’re locked in here, you could use the other hatch. The sand (as we all know) prevents radiation from permeating. The sand would fall, then you would put the ladder down and get out-to what, I don’t know!” 

There were no comforts of home in this shelter. The commode was nothing more than a wooden box with lime in it. There was no electricity, stove, refrigerator, or beds. Just the wooden seats to sit on while you waited for the end of the world. 

“Can you imagine staying in here for two months? I would go nuts!” I said. 

“Well, you’d get to know your family very well,” said Dean. 

“We asked Patrick again what possessed his father to have a bomb shelter in his backyard. 

“My father was pressured by my mother. He was scared, like most of us were. At that time, this place wasn’t that funny. He just wanted us to feel safe. The shelter cost twenty-five hundred dollars to install. I still have the receipts.” 

As we exited, the climb back up into the light was a refreshing change, even though we were in the hole for only about twenty minutes. To come out of that shelter after a nuclear attack would be unimaginable. 

The DeLage family home was recently sold to a new owner, bomb shelter and all. It may have turned out to be an adding selling point in these uncertain times we were living in-again.

Inizia oggi il Tour de France 2017, centoquattresima edizione della “Grand Boucle“, è in programma dal 1º luglio al 23 luglio 2017, per un totale di 3.516 km in 21 tappe, da Dusseldorf, in Germania, al tradizionale arrivo sui Campi Elisi a Parigi.

  Il percorso completo è stato svelato il 18 ottobre 2016 al Palazzo dei Congressi di Parigi. La corsa prevede la partenza dalla Germania, dalla città di Dusseldorf, con una gara a cronometro individuale. Prima di approdare in Francia il percorso prevede, nelle prime tappe, passaggi dal Belgio e dal Lussemburgo.

Il primo arrivo in salita è previsto già alla quinta tappa a La planche des belles filles. La nona tappa è quella che prevede il massimo dislivello, con le scalate al Col de la Biche, al Grand Colombier e al Mont du Chat nella regione della Savoia. Con la dodicesima tappa e l’arrivo in salita a Peyragudes iniziano le frazioni pirenaiche, che proseguono con la breve tappa successiva, di soli 100 km, da Saint-Girons a Foix ma con pendenze massime del 20%. Dopo il passaggio sul Massiccio Centrale, nelle ultime tappe vengono affrontate le Alpi, a partire dalla diciassettesima tappa con il Col du Galibier e l’arrivo in salita al Col d’Izoard nella diciottesima. La ventesima tappa prevede la seconda e ultima cronometro individuale a Marsiglia con arrivo allo stadio Velodrome, mentre l’ultima tappa, prima del tradizionale arrivo sui Campi Elisi a Parigi, prevede il passaggio all’interno del Grand Palais, realizzato per l’Expo 1900.

Le superstar fra le automobili del passato s’incontreranno quelle del cinema nel Concorso d’eleganza Villa d’Este 2018, il cui tema per questa edizione sarà, Hollywood on the Lake.

Davvero due mondi ispiratori, le auto e il cinema, in un connubio che spesso ha decreto il successo di un modello o di un film.

Il tradizionale appuntamento sul Lago di Como, a Cernobbio dal 25 al 27 maggio, quest’anno vedrà i veicoli partecipanti coprire le epoche non solo della storia automobilistica e motociclistica, ma anche di quella del cinema, dal muto al digitale, con lo sfizioso contorno delle Formula 1 del passato, costruite tra il 1965 e il 1985, come Lotus, Alfa Romeo e McLaren. Tra queste l’iconica Tyrrell a sei ruote di Ronnie Peterson, che ha partecipato al mondiale del 1977, restaurata dall’ex pilota di F1 Pierluigi Martini, storico pilota della Minardi, e anche sui volanti di Toleman e Scuderia Italia.

Cernobbio, il suo panorama, le sue ville storiche, saranno lo scenario unico di un evento in cui gli ospiti avranno il privilegio di ammirare da vicino le vetture d’epoca e le motociclette storiche più raffinate della loro epoca. Un vero appuntamento imperdibile non solo per gli appassionati del settore, ma una manifestazione che mixa glamour, eleganza e vip da ogni angolo del mondo.

Il Concorso Internazionale d’Eleganza per automobili nata come “Coppa d’Oro Villa d’Este”, dal 1999 viene patrocinata da Bmw Group, ha visto la sua nascita il 1° Settembre 1929, per iniziativa congiunta dell’Automobile Club di Como, del Grand Hotel Villa d’Este e del Comitato di Cura di Como. La fama dei luoghi, gli inimitabili scenari dei giardini di Villa Olmo e di Villa d’Este, distinguono subito questa manifestazione automobilistica che alla sua prima edizione vide già ottanta concorrenti. Vinse uno dei simboli a quattro ruote della Lombardia, l’Isotta-Fraschini, resa poi immortale dal capolavoro cinematografico “Viale del tramonto”. E proprio una Isotta Fraschini del 1909, sarà uno dei gioielli a quattro ruote esposti, in questa edizione del Concorso di Eleganza.

Storicamente è uno degli eventi dedicati alle auto d’epoca più rinomati e apprezzati dagli appassionati di tutto il mondo.

Il Concorso d’eleganza Villa d’Este 2018 potrà contare sulla partecipazione di 51 auto e 30 fra moto e sidecar, prodotte dal 1909 al 1985, i cui proprietari provengono da 15 nazioni differenti, mentre le moto vanno dagli anni dal 1907 al 1969 e sono di 25 produttori diversi.

Ci saranno otto classi di valutazione per le auto d’epoca, A – I titani, polvere, fango e rischio (1900-1939), B – Da Manhattan a Mayfair, l’età d’oro dell’opulenza automobilistica (1918-1939), C – Plasmate dal vento, le berline dell’epoca Art Déco (1925-1940), D – Nuovo mondo, nuove idee, la storia delle gran turismo (1945-1965), E – La velocità incontra lo stile, l’affermazione delle auto sportive e da competizione (1950-1970), F – Quando il sesso era sicuro e le corse pericolose, Formula 1 (1950-1988), G – Hollywood sul lago, le stelle del cinema (dagli anni Venti agli anni Trenta) e H – Perfettamente conservate, archeologia automobilistica (1900-1980).

Le cinque classi per le moto d’epoca saranno invece A – Gli anni d‘oro delle motociclette americane dal 1907 al 1917, B – Lusso a 3 ruote, i sidecar degli anni Venti e Trenta (1920-1939), C – Le vincitrici italiane, motociclette 250 GP (1949-1963), D – Una nuova veste per le motociclette inglesi e tedesche (1960-1970) e E – Design motociclistico, concept-bike e prototipi di nuova concezione.

La giuria del concorso sarà composta da nomi noti del panorama motoristico, con presidente dal 2004 Lorenzo Ramaciotti, ex responsabile design di Pininfarina e gruppo FCA, affiancato da Ian Cameron, ex capo del design di Rolls-Royce; Harm Lagaaji, ex capo design di Ford, BMW e Porsche; Mauro Forghieri storico ingegnere Ferrari; Patrick Le Quément, ex capo progettista Renault, mentre tra i giudici onorari ci sarà Lapo Elkann.

Confermata anche la modella Yasmine Le Bon, con il marito Simon Le Bon, storico leader dei Duran Duran, band cult degli anni 80.

A fare gli onori di casa gli organizzatori di Bmw Sergio Solero (presidente e ad italiano), Ulrich Knieps (responsabile del settore Classic) e Danilo Zucchetti (managing director di Villa d’Este).

Per suggellare il rapporto tra auto e cinema saranno esposte nel padiglione centrale di Villa Erba, grazie a BMW Classic, le auto che hanno avuto ruoli da protagoniste nel cinema, come la Delage del 1937 presente in “Un americano a Parigi” con Gene Kelly.

L’Aston Martin DB5, nota per essere la vettura di James Bond, in vari film della saga, a partire da Goldfinger del 1964.

Le Mini Cooper S di “The Italian Job” film del 2003 interpretato da Charlize Theron, Mark Wahlberg, Jason Statham, Edward Norton e Donald Sutherland.

La Mini di Mister Bean, oltre alle BMW apparse nei film più recenti della serie 007 e Mission Impossible. Attesa anche la mitica Lancia Aurelia B24 del “Sorpasso” di Dino Risi.

Il concorso si terrà nelle due sedi di Villa d’Este e Villa Erba, mentre gli appuntamenti per il pubblico saranno tutti concentrati a Villa Erba, a Cernobbio in largo Luchino Visconti, 4.

IL PROGRAMMA

Sabato 26 maggio l’apertura sarà dalle 9.30 alle 17, con protagoniste le moto, mentre dalle 14 alle 14.30 ci sarà la parata Motorcycle Street Run, dove le due ruote si recheranno da Villa Erba a Villa d’Este, attraversando Cernobbio.

Domenica 27 maggio l’apertura sarà dalle 9.30 alle 17.30, con l’esposizione di tutte le auto e moto partecipanti, oltre alla presentazione in anteprima mondiale di una concept-bike di BMW Motorrad.

Dalle 9.30 alle 14.30 si terrà il referendum pubblico per i trofei BMW Group Italia e BMW Group Ragazzi, relativi alle auto d’epoca, oltre al Concorso d’Eleganza Design Award per concept-car e prototipi.

Dalle 11 alle 12, il concorso di motociclette con la presentazione dei vincitori, dalle 14.30 alle 17.30 la cerimonia di premiazione di ciascuna classe delle auto d’epoca e concept-car, con al termine una parata di tutte le auto partecipanti.

New Orleans - Day 3

We really treated ourselves today by heading down to Betsy's Pancake House, just down the road from our hostel. It really felt like a local diner, was packed with families indulging in some classic american food. We decided on banana and walnut and blueberry pancakes and coffee. It was pretty good, Sam thinks it was amazing. It was pretty clear from the staff and everyone in the restaurant that St Patrick's Day was a pretty big thing as they were all in their green outfits with green beads and the like.

We headed to the Garden district to do a walking tour lead by tour guide Cat. The tour was ok (not the guide of course), the area itself is beautiful, but we got over random facts about the homes pretty quickly. It was getting close to happy hour so we headed to a sweet Taco place (Taco’s and Beers) for cheap you know whats! We were then ready to fully embrace St Patrick's Day so headed back to the French Quarter for the street parade, via a few stops,  the cigar shop (for the second time on our trip), 50c oysters and happy hour wine from Red Fish + finally a few bloody marys from various spots around the city, with our top one being from a hotel (who would have thought). It was absolutely buzzing in the French Quarter and everyone was really in the spirit of the day in green from head to toe. We met a classic local NOLA couple -  Jennifer and her husband who introduced himself as Mr Tits - and watched the parade with them getting ourselves covered in green beads and looking markedly greener by the end of it (!) One part of the parade was woman marching and dancing in groups with different names for lady parts (i.e, dames de delage and bearded oysters), pretty good work from you NOLA. We ended up back at the hostel with some more drinks and had a night cap and a chat to a few of our fellow backpackers.
