Brazil's Supreme Court unanimously accepts the indictment, and five men become defendants in Marielle Franco's case

Brazão brothers, Rivaldo Barbosa, Robson Calixto Fonseca, and Ronald Paulo de Alves will face criminal action

On Tuesday (18), the First Panel of Brazil’s Supreme Court (STF, in Portuguese) accepted the indictment filed by the Attorney General's Office (PGR, in Portuguese) against the alleged masterminds of the murder of Rio de Janeiro councilwoman Marielle Franco and driver Anderson Gomes, and the attempted murder of parliamentary aide Fernanda Chaves, which happened in March 2018.

All five justices who make up the collegiate voted to accept the charges. Flávio Dino, Cristiano Zanin, Luiz Fux and Carmen Lúcia fully followed the rapporteur's vote, Justice Alexandre de Moraes.

In this phase, the panel analyzes whether the charge meets the legal requirements and whether there is evidence of the crime and its authorship. The trial is being held by the Supreme Court, due to the privileged jurisdiction of Chiquinho Brazão, who is a federal deputy from Rio de Janeiro. 

The judiciary accepted the charges, making brothers Chiquinho and Domingos Brazão, the former head of the Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro Rivaldo Barbosa, as well as Military Police major Ronald Paulo Alves de Paula, and Robson Calixto Fonseca, a former advisor to Domingos Brazão, defendants who will face criminal prosecution for the crimes.

Please forgive the writing rant, but god, I'm about ready to give up entirely. Sent in my latest chapter block to my editor, my current WIP is a commissioned romance novella that is quickly stretching into a full work. In it, my heroine Sara, a struggling sculptor/3D artist in her early 30s, hears a knock on her door early one evening. It turns out to be a very well-mannered young British man, a butler in fact, hand-delivering an invitation to her per the instructions of his employer. His employer turns out to be a man named Julian, who has been masquerading as a woman named "Paula Germaine" on paper for several years, in the interest of purchasing many of Sara's pieces without her knowing the real identity of her most prolific benefactor.

Julian's proposal is fairly simple: he grew up in hiding, the lost prince of a tiny Franco-Germanic nation that was absorbed fully into Switzerland in the 90s after their military was all but destroyed in a war with a bordering nation. To avoid total ruin, they denounced their queen, Julian's mother, and pled allegiance to Switzerland. Julian's mother fled to America with her small son to avoid assassination, and hid her son from potential kidnappers or murderers for over a decade. He rarely left his home as a child, but grew into an adult who is fluent in nine languages, has more than one doctorate, and after the death of his mother and his reluctant emergence into public life, the Swiss government allocated to him the royal inheritance that they'd been holding as no one knew where the lost prince of Valdoria had been for decades.

Before her death, Julian's mother had married an extremely wealthy day trader in New York, further supplementing the family's income and leaving Julian well beyond a millionaire when all was said and done. Now he's approaching 40, and while he's generally awkward and reserved socially, he also laughs uncontrollably at the faces barn owls make - nearly his entire TikTok FYP is owls, for some reason. He trips over everything, is self-conscious about his glasses, and he desperately wants to take care of Sara professionally. For him, this means financial support in every way she could possibly want or need - he proves his intent by opening an unlimited credit account in her name, directly connected to his own so that she has full access to his money. He expects literally nothing in return, has been terribly alone all his life and he fell in love with Sara's work long before he saw her face. He only wants to give her the world. A dream, right? And of course they're being stalked by some unhinged murderers because everyone loves a conflict.

My editor's thoughts:

1: "Sara's too old though, if he's only 40 she should be closer to 22 - 25."

2: "You described her hair as being short, you'll need to 86 that. No one's going to buy a book about a girl with a buzz cut being romanced."

3: "Also Julian's not intimidating enough, he should throw her around a little. Make a few demands for all the money he's offering to spend on her, you know? Cut out some of the quirks too, him being physically clumsy isn't attractive."

4: "He needs to be less shy too, basically just make him more aggressive and dominant. Looking forward to the next block!"

Me, having literally taken on this project in the sole interest of doing the exact opposite of everything she requested and writing a romantic hero who is vulnerable and gentle and emotionally wounded in ways that literally do not require him to force a woman to "save" or "fix" him:

The Office of Brazil’s Prosecutor-General has called on the Supreme Court to convict those accused of involvement in the murder of Councilwoman Marielle Franco and her driver Anderson Gomes, which took place in 2018 in Rio de Janeiro.

The statement issued Tuesday (May 13) calls for the conviction of Domingos Brazão, adviser to the Rio de Janeiro Court of Auditors; former Federal Representative Chiquinho Brazão, Domingos’ brother; former Rio de Janeiro Civil Police Commissioner Rivaldo Barbosa; Military Police Major Ronald Alves de Paula; and former Military Police Officer Robson Calixto, Domingos’ adviser.

The request is part of the final arguments in the case, the last stage before the trial.

In the allegations, Deputy Prosecutor Hindenburgo Chateaubriand says the accused should be convicted of the crimes of criminal organization and homicide. The evidence obtained in the investigation, he argues, proves the involvement of the accused in the crime.

Can you explain this autistic person what happened here?

I was just scrolling r/mybrilliantfriendhbo and I made a goofy comment on a topic that seems to have touched a nerve:

This interaction left me shocked because I rarely have issues online, and also because the same person who was lowkey calling me a sex-obsessed pedo had replied to similar topics a few times, always stating that she preferred the actresses young (?).

Someone explained to me that I had phrased things wrong:

Looking back at my comment, I don't see how that could be understood by me referring to our girls. In fact, the job of Lila's body double, especially in the infamous bath scene where all she needed to do was to stand up and be looked at by Lenù in an "inner turmoil" from below, had been a joke between me and other MBF fans. Like, we laughed? Some of us had been nude models, and we knew how much the actress probably wanted to stop being cold and wet and leave already?

So I'm asking you guys, who have a very different approach and don't have a stick up your ass: What did I do? Is it because I wrote "boobs" and "pussy"? And - that comment was a personal attack rooted in some sort of queerphobia, was it?

I know this happens on r/ all of the time, and I know that this particular sub isn't very queerfriendly, to put it mildly. Which is weird, I know, because anyone who is familiar with the fans' demographics knows that the sapphic women are at the core of the fandom, especially between seasons. But alas, the sapphics usually stay silent and want no trouble.

Still, there are some interesting discussions from time to time on the sub (even when some topics can be repetitive - IS LILA EVIL?), and people who are genuinely knowledgeable, and I do have good times sharing my thoughts and reading others'. But - I feel a bit stupid because I seldom reference anything that could be considered dykey, and then I get this?

At some point in season 3, I was left scratching my head because some users were quick to say that if Pietro had intimacy issues with Lenù, he may be gay. I totally respect it if you think that Pietro might be gay, but for fuck's sake, are you even aware of the series you're watching? Where were you the 10,000 times when Lenù was in "inner turmoil" about her best friend, drooling over Nino, and having zero chemistry with Pietro from the very beginning, who was only a good catch for her? Didn't you see Lenù's vivid nightmare about being forced to put on the engagement ring? Didn't you notice that the one who has an (understandable) problem with this marriage is Lenù, and that nobody suggested that she was gay????

I guess I'm annoyed that after years of not suggesting "Lenù gay" as The Explanation for Everything in MBF, because, well, I don't think that things are that simple, and letting people discuss at length whether Franco or Nino are better or whether Lila looks better with Marcello or Enzo, I am suddenly the one who is weird and gets talked down to as some pedo predator.

A somewhat similar thing happened to me a while ago on r/ as well, when some people on The White Lotus sub complained that there were too many discussions regarding gay undertones (compared to MBF, there were definitely 1000% more threads, which is still puzzling to me). I was just annoyed at that comment, because you know how many threads I see about m/f interactions that people are constantly pushing as romantic? Fuck the straights complaining about a few threads regarding Cameron and Ethan, or Paula and Olivia. TWL is openly playful and was created by an openly bisexual man, OF COURSE it's full of gay undertones, and OF COURSE you don't see them because you haven't had the same experience! You never had to read between the lines, you never had to wonder whether something is platonic or romantic, you never had to navigate relationships without set roles! How great for you! Now let us have our little party without bothering anyone, will you?

Anyway, I just needed to vent. Feel free to tell me if you think you know where my original comment was flawed.

Oh, and if you participate on the MBF sub - say hi, and participate more. It can be cool, but it clearly needs more input from diverse sources.
