West Coast Tech Mystery: A Gravity Falls Fanfic Ch. 5
     Dipper pulled the bookshelf far enough for them to squeeze through easily. A hallway slanted downwards away from them and into darkness as it turned sharply to the right. Wendy activated the dim setting on her flashlight and held it low in front of them as they advanced down the musty corridor. They both realized it was unlikely anyone was still down here, but it was better to be safe just in case. The two explorers hugged the right side of the wall and moved as quietly as possible to the corner at the end. It was apparent that this was probably part of an old storage area or study fallen out of use from the original library.  Dipper borrowed Wendy’s light after taking a quick peek into the dimly lit corridor around the corner. He took another peek with the light, confirming his suspicion that the hall terminated in a door not too far ahead. He gestured Wendy forward and they both noticed natural yellow light creeping onto the floor in front of them from underneath the door. Wendy approached the door and put her ear to the carved paneling. Hearing nothing, she shook her head at Dipper who immediately took a look through the key hole.
     “I can’t see much but I think it’s empty” he whispered to his redheaded comrade. She nodded, and Dipper tried the knob. It was locked. Luckily, he had prepared for this stakeout thoroughly; he unslung his backpack and retrieved a few simple lock picking tools. After a short manipulation of the tumblers in the old lock, he had it open. Unfortunately, the task had caused more noise than he intended in the silent lair. The pair knew anyone on the other side would know they were coming. All the same, they nudged the door open as quietly as possible. Thankfully they were greeted by only inanimate objects on the other side. The adventurers breathed a sigh of relief and smiled at each other. Before them lay a miniature lair with all of the necessities required for a meeting of the Society of the Blind Eye.
       The room was relatively small for its purpose. On the right lay a table with books and documents strewn over its surface. Next to that was a bookshelf with more books and a few empty shelves. Over the table hung an ominous painting of a stern faced Society member whose eyes and brow where hidden by the signature red hood. He wore a vaguely masonic chain around his shoulders which bore many symbols of the Blind Eye in different incarnations, and he held up one hand in what appeared to be a sign or greeting of the order. In the center of the room stood an old barber’s chair upholstered in blood red cloth. It was plainly obvious that this chair was intended for mind erasures. Above that hung a candle chandler which probably provided ominous lighting for ceremonies. The left wall interrupted the wood paneling and wall paper that adorned the rest of the room; it bore naturally tan bricks with a recess flanked by mahogany shelves. Inside the recess sat a small stand and TV screen intended to play stored memories; the shelves bore scores of memory tubes in perfect order, glaring in the dim yellow lights illuminating the room. There was a small safe in the back left corner next to one of the memory tube shelves; aside from that there were only minor pieces of furniture and Blind Eye memorabilia and insignias.
       Our intrepid explorers lowered their guard since they had the room to themselves and there were no other obvious doors or entrances other than the one they came in from. Immediately they checked the memory tubes for names, and, to their relief, every tube had a blank label. Wendy stuck a tube into the projector to be sure, and it brought up only static. It appeared the Society had yet to abduct anyone at West Coast Tech. With this established, Dipper moved over to the table and began skimming the documents. All of the books and most of the papers were inconsequential; however, he did find one pamphlet entitled “MANIFESTO OF THE RESURRECTED SOCIETY OF THE BLIND EYE” and an encoded letter. “WENDY! I found something!” he exclaimed with excitement. “It looks like some sort of mission statement. There’s also some code on this paper that looks important.”  Wendy moved away from the safe she had been examining and rushed over to the table. “What does it say, Dip?”
Dipper ran his fingers over the cipher. “I’ll have to take a picture and decode it later. I can read this pamphlet though,” he paused and took a breath.
“Manifesto…Society of the Blind eye.
     Brothers, this order was founded on noble principles: innocence, fraternity, protection. We must uphold this tradition of honor in our time. Like a phoenix from the ashes, we arose once more from the chaos of the Demon. It is our destiny to protect humanity from the insanity that abounds at the cracks in our dimension. We must protect our people from themselves. Ignorance of the monsters scratching at our windows is the only sure method to secure bliss amongst the populace. We have always believed this, but, now, we are called to an even higher mission. The Demon whose name shan’t be spoken nearly succeeded in conquering our dimension and destroying life as we know it. His near success can be attributed to our order’s temporary destruction mere weeks before his emergence. Even though he was cast from this dimension in defeat, we now know he was able to gain entrance into our realm through the manipulation of thoughts and dreams in an ethereal form. Once again, he only exists in the mind. This fact is crucial to his permanent defeat. The only way to ensure the Demon never returns is to erase all memory of him from all of humanity. Fortunately, only the residents of Gravity Falls knew of his existence other than a few token visitors. The mayor has forbade those who experienced the Demon’s terror from speaking of it. This makes our mission all the easier. The final victory lies in erasing every last scrap of the Demon from everyone’s minds. We shall seek out the few who have left Gravity Falls since the event; then, we shall systematically free each resident of the town from the Demon. Once this is done, humanity’s victory shall culminate when we as an order free our own minds from the Demon…”
      Wendy let out a long whistle. “That’s really heavy dude.” Dipper nodded, concerned. “You said it…let’s get out of here after I take a picture of this code. There’s nothing else we can do in here. That safe is beyond my skills.” Wendy looked around once last time in case the pair missed something. “Yeah. It is hard to say what Jeffrey Archer would make of the Mehul Choksi saga. It has all the ingredients of a thriller. A tropical island paradise, a mystery woman, a private executive jet, a flashy but elusive diplomat, boats, abduction, torture; and one or two Caribbean media outlets registered in India.
The lurid story has had several twists and turns, one more bizarre than the other. As court battles rage in the Caribbean for deporting the fugitive diamondtaire back to India, to release him on bail from a Dominican prison and to settle his citizenship in Antigua, police in the island nations and Scotland Yard in London are seized with his complaint of abduction and torture.
Several questions remain to be answered. Were Indian government agencies involved in the operation to secure Choksi? If the Indian Government was not involved, what could be the motivation of the alleged abductors? And if Choksi was indeed trying to escape to Cuba, why would he leave without his passport and sufficient money and leave behind his wife?
Newspapers in the Caribbean, at least one of which, Associates Times appears to be registered in India and owned by PDQ Media Pvt Ltd., have added dramatic details. An eyewitness in Dominica has been quoted as saying that Choksi was found dumping papers in the Caribbean sea when the police challenged him and he began to run and fell, injuring himself.
Another report stated that Choksi’s elder brother had bribed the opposition in Dominica and Antigua to demand that Choksi be freed. In both the island nations, the ‘Governments’ want Choksi to be deported to India while the opposition want the ‘rule of law’ to prevail.
Amidst all this bedlam, another question has gone unanswered. Why was the Indian Government so keen to charter an executive jet to bring back the fugitive ? There are procedures and protocols in place for deportation and once the formalities are completed, fugitives are bundled into a plane, sometimes with security and sent off. Why would the Government of India incur an expenditure of Rupees five or six Crore on sending the jet?
Choksi, who fled India in January 2018, has at least two cases filed against him for defrauding the Punjab National Bank of Rs 6097 Crore (PNB was defrauded of Rs 13,000 Crore in all) and for money laundering. But according to information in the public domain, he is yet to be declared a proclaimed economic offender because the case before the special court in Mumbai has not moved since 2019.
What is more, the Enforcement Directorate in 2019 had indicated that it had attached properties and bank accounts worth Rs 2,5347 Crore belonging to Choksi and his Gitanjali Group.
The attached property included 15 flats and 17 offices in Mumbai, a mall in Calcutta, a four-acre farmhouse in Alibaug, assets in Dubai, a Mercedes Benz car, fixed deposits and bank accounts in India and abroad besides 231 acres of land at Nashik, Nagpur, Panvel and at Villupuram in Tamil Nadu.
Choksi’s complaint is that on May 23, he was kidnapped in Antigua, bound, beaten and blindfolded and forcibly taken to Dominica by sea. There he was charged with illegal entry without valid travel documents by Dominican authorities and detained.
He named four people and accused them of masterminding his abduction, namely Gurdip alias Dev Bath, Barbara Jarabik, Gurjit Singh Bhandal and Gurmit Singh. While 33-year-old Barbara Jarabik holds a Hungarian Passport and Bath a diplomatic passport issued by St Kitts and Nevis, the other two are said to be British nationals.
Bath, a resident of Mayfair, London, had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September, 2019 at an India-CARICOM (Caribbean Community) summit in New York and posted photos of them in conversation on Twitter. In another photograph he is seen in conversation with Prince Charles. The Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Gaston Browne, follows him on Twitter.
Bath, born in Jalandhar, resides at Mayfair, London while Gurmit Singh is said to reside in Birmingham. Bath and Jarabik arrived and departed between Antigua and Dominica the same month. On May 25 Bhandal and Singh are recorded as entering Dominica on the same boat; and on May 28 the two with Jarabik left this island on the same flight.
The complaint alleges that both Bhandal and Singh were in April denied immigration by Dominica. By way of evidence a copy of an email from Rhoan Barker, Operations Supervisor at the Joint Regional Communication Centre in Barbados was attached.
In an intelligence alert to several island states in the region, Barker wrote, “Please note that the undermentioned subjects were intercepted in Dominica on April 12, 2021, having arrived into the country on a yacht (Lady Anne) manned by two Saint Lucian nationals. Subjects appeared to be involved in a smuggling ring. Singh and Bhandal were attempting to disembark the vessel to board a flight to the UK. They were both denied landing and subsequently left for Antigua on the said yacht.”
After the pair apparently returned to Antigua, Randy Baltimore, Principal Inspector of Customs in a hand-written note on the email said “both passengers arrived on 15.4.21… and departed same day on o/b (on board) BA2156 (which is a British Airways flight from Antigua to London Gatwick).”
Addressing a press conference on Thursday, a London lawyer Michael Polak, who had filed the complaint to the Scotland Yard, reiterated that his client was abducted and tortured and taken to Dominica, where he doesn't have the protection of a final appeal to the Privy Council in London as he does in Antigua by virtue of his citizenship there.
Polak described Choksi's alleged kidnapping and abuse as an "attack on the rule of law". He also said countries involved in the crime had engaged in "pirate diplomacy". Apparently, a hint that the Indian government was complicit.
He alleged Choksi was denied access to a lawyer for three days after arriving in Dominica; and that he was asked to "sign a piece of paper" which made no mention of the fact that he was an Antiguan citizen, resident there. He asserted: "They wanted to whisk him away to India." He asked: "Is this the way any of our states should be behaving?"
Polak shared text messages relating to an Airbnb booking for two beach front villas with a boat in private Antigua made by the Hungarian woman Barbara Jarabik through an Indian-owned London-based travel agency. He maintained Choksi was lured to one of these properties, where his capture took place, after which he was forced on to the rented vessel. Jarabik is named in Polak's complaint to British police.
The island nation of Antigua is described as a tropical paradise with 365 beaches. It is also a tax haven in the Caribbean with no income, wealth or corporate tax. Its population was around 71 thousand in 2019 and more than one-third of them were said to be ‘foreigners’.
Choksi and his wife have been living in the Jolly Harbour area, where the Prime Minister of Antigua also lives, since 2018. His wife Priti in telephonic interviews with Indian TV channels rubbished the claim of the Hungarian woman that Mehul Choksi was known to her as ‘Raj’. Everybody in the island knew who Choksi was, she maintained, and it was inconceivable that Barbara, who herself is into business, would not have verified who Choksi was.
His lawyers claim he acquired the citizenship of Antigua by making the required investment, which is said to be around Rupees two Crore in Indian Rupees (200,000 US Dollars in real estate) and a donation of one Crore Rupees.

Here’s how to find your computer’s IP address on a Mac. If you want to know more about what an IP address is and what it does, check out our previous article here. Click on the WiFi menu button in your Mac’s menu bar. Then select Network Preferences. You can find the WiFi button in the top right-hand corner of your computer screen. Finding your local IP address is really easy. Head to the Apple menu System Preferences Network and then select the connection you are currently using: AirPort (wireless) or Ethernet (wired). If your Mac is connected (Status: Connected) then your local IP address will appear on the top right corner of the menu. NB: You can also find your local IP address using the ifconfig command. Go to the Apple Menu, then select System Preferences. Click on 'Network' in the System Preferences panel. Under 'Show:', select the network interface that you want the IP/MAC address for. The MAC address is shown in the 'Physical Address' column with the IP address in the 'Internet Address' column. An example of a table record is in Step 4.
Step 4: Evaluate results
The following is an example of ARP output. The first column is the IP address. The second column is the MAC address, and the third is the type of IP assigned--static or dynamic.

You've forgotten about one little thing: arp keeps mac<>ip association of recently contacted peers, so it's quite often not to find the mac<>ip association we're looking for, of machine that exists in the network. Prior to using arp -a it's wise to ping the host first.

I'm sorry but... if the thing is to find the IP address from the MAC, how will you ping the host first ?

I thought the aim of this exercise was to FIND an IP address. Doesn't using PING imply you already know the IP (or hostname) which makes ARP redundant? How do you PING a MAC?
Assuming no IP or hostname info, I have used a portscanner (like LanSpy or Zenmap) to get MAC > IP info. Currently my preferred method if the device isn't listed in Spiceworks :-)
There was a time when I was a baby admin and I didn't want to raise alarms by installing a scanner that I wrote a batch file (yes, that long ago) that PINGed every IP on a subnet, then immediately ran ARP redirecting output to a text file. But that depends on the device in question being set to respond to PING requests.

This does not work for any host on the other side of a router. Any hosts on the other side of the router will show the routers MAC address.

I realize this is an old topic, but someone like myself may be looking for an answer. I became admin of a network with little over 200 devices, which none of the cabling was mapped. I was told I was responsible for the cabling, so I began looking for a way other than toning out all the cables. I was fortunate to have Cisco switches and Windows Server 2008. I was able to use the Cisco Network Assistant to grab MAC addresses and the port number, then in DHCP on the Server 2008 I could find the MAC and corresponding IP. Furthermore I could also get the computer name from DHCP and correlate that to which user was on the machine using PDQ inventory to see who was logged in to the machine. Most of this of course depends on the devices being in use. I've been able to create an accurate map of about 90% of my network without touching the cables.

I am interested in this thread, hopefully someone can help. There are 4 types of arp message: arp request, arp reply, rarp request, rarp reply. So, that being said, is it possible to manually send a rarp request? Sort of a arp based ping?There is arping, but we need rarping... if it exists. Of course, I understand that I can't arp outside my default gateway, but if there is a rarp request, how is it used inside the local network? Thanks to whatever guru can explain what we're missing.

Great for finding an IP if you have the MAC address.
My instance where I found this useful was after updating the firmware on a switch remotely via TFTP, the IP of the switch would change (making pinging redundant, obviously). Trying a network scan over Spiceworks or rescanning the single device would not update the IP and I needed an alternate way to find it.
This method worked perfectly. Thank you. Hopefully this helps those trying to understand the purpose of this practice and how it was in-fact useful.

I understand the issues in attempting to use a MAC address to locate a device from outside of its local network. What puzzles me is how Honeywell Total Connect does this with their WiFi connected thermostats. The hardware configuration is: a Honeywell WiFi thermostat that is WiFi connected to a Netgear N600 router which uses DHCP to assign an IP adddress. The router is connected to Comcast with a Motorola SB6120 modem. Comcast assigns a system wide (dynamic) IP. There is no static IP. On initial setup, a WiFi connection is first established between the thermostat and the router. The thermostat's MAC and CRC and a username and password are entered into the Total Connect software setup. It is then possible to read or set thermostat values using Total Connect Web pages. I know how to do this with a static IP or a DNS service that automatically tracks changes in dynamic IP addresses. Does anyone understand how this works with Total Connect?

This post was extremely helpful, thanks itdownsouth :) I used show interface to find MAC addresses on our switches (reason for this is poor network documentation and mis-labeled switchports and wall jacks...). I took the MAC addresses that I could not locate the hosts or ip addresses for, ran arp -a to list the address<>mac list, then one by one, nbtstat -A for each IP address I matched a MAC to from the unlabeled ports. Tedious, but found 5 or 6 now (seeing hexadecimal thoughts now though...).

By the way, the reason this is working great for me is the lack of routers -- all switches, so if you have only one subnet like we do, this will do -- otherwise, you will probably need to login to the router or switch on the other side of the router to find MAC address tables on the other networks. You may not be able to see them all on the local host, as far as arp -a on the local host, but looking up the arp or hosts tables on switches and routers could be a possible solution for those with multiple subnets.

Use SuperScan to do a bulk ping of the entire network range. SuperScan 3 (I recommend) is a free tool by McAfee.
Then use arp -a | Find '5c-d9-98' to get for example all ping nodes with a manufacturer of Asus.

@RobertRobinson I'm the lead designer and project manager on the Honeywell systems.
I can tell you exactly how I designed it. It's actually quite simple. Nothing is sent back to the unit. The unit is allowed access to the Internet via your setup and the router. As long as the unit has permission to make an outbound connection it will work. What happens is the unit makes a report to the server. If it needs to make a request then it gives the server a unique key. The server puts any needed data in an xml (readable) and the thermostat (or quite a few other devices) hits that URL a few seconds later (the device told the server where it would pick up that info).
All your device needs is a simple read-only connection to the outside world. No need to download anything. It's a VERY simple process that I developed back in 1992 when the Interwebs were still pretty new to most people. There were many processes built off of this simple idea (it was pretty cutting edge when I first designed it). Store and forward, offline browsing, push technology, etc. all are based on this simple technology.
Am I rich? Not even close. I was working on my PhD at the time and was hired by Honeywell to implement my design. I literally gave it away to the general public as is right.

DHP partners across the company with other Digital Health groups to advance digital health solutions which include hardware, software, applications, tools, and technologies to enable development of our therapies as well as more personalized care of patients across a range of therapeutic areas. Our primary focus is on the validation, scaling, and productization of digital health platforms, tools, and products; inclusive of late-stage development of novel digital biomarkers and endpoints, as well as the design, conduct, and analysis of analytical validation, clinical validation, and clinical utility studies to meet stakeholder needs and regulatory requirements, as appropriate. The PHC Center of Excellence is focused on translating the promise of meaningful data at scale, advanced analytics, and digital technologies for drug development, and personalized patient care. THE POSITION: The Platform Compliance and Strategy (PCS) group within DHP leads the teams Quality Management System (QMS) strategy; coordinates product documentation (e.g., CSV validation, content validation for digital endpoints); secondary evidence generation needed for validation; and supports the lifecycle management of the products in our portfolio. Customer-focus throughout product development is key. Scaling from prototypes to commercial in-market deployment and making effective use of generated data are priorities. PCS also supports the greater Roche organization through early product consultation on Software as Medical Device (SaMD) products, creation of education materials on SaMD, providing insights and support to the Regulatory Policy teams, and leading research (or feedback) from key stakeholders (patients, regulators) on data privacy, regulation, and evidence requirements (both digital measures and the software system). We closely collaborate within Roche with our other DHP groups, clinical development functions, other digital health groups, functions and subject matter experts within the Personalized Healthcare area and the Research and Early Development organizations, Diagnostics, Pharma Partnering, and technical & technology functions, in order to define and execute the strategic direction of Digital Health to transform drug development and patient care. We externally partner with patient groups and health care providers, technology companies, regulatory and reimbursement authorities, legal manufacturers, policy makers and others. In partnership with colleagues, the Senior Quality Specialist in Digital Health Technologies will spearhead the quality strategy for a robust, replicable and scalable platform that will host analytically and/or clinically validated software. The Senior Quality Specialist will be responsible for developing procedures and tools that ensure effective clinical, software code, and data oversight and documentation support for the lifecycle of every DHP product, in partnership with the Legal Manufacturer. This role has the potential to evolve into a formal leadership role to include a team of direct reports. RESPONSIBILITIES: Quality Management System (QMS) Assessment and Maintenance: Collaborate with compliance experts across the business (PD Quality (PDQ), Roche Diagnostics Regulatory & Compliance) to develop QMS strategy and assess capabilities of Legal Manufacturer for each product Assess the QMS needs for products in the DHP pipeline, and collaborate with stakeholder to enable early alignment of digital products with design controls Partner with DHPs Product Management and Architecture & Design groups to identify tools and processes for streamlined product compliance with quality management Understand and support the local quality responsible (LQR) in implementing the Good Clinical Practice / Good Vigilance Practice (GCP/GVP) QMS requirements for the business and monitor progress Work with departments to collect and compile data for quarterly reports for global and Roche Affiliate Management Review Support LQR in liaising with Functions to ensure compliant Vendor Management processes are in place, and that there exists effective vendor oversight Ensure that all processes are aligned with global Roche SOPs and any local requirements Ensure this is done in compliance with the Roche Global Records Management Directive, in collaboration with the respective CoreMap Records Coordinator Deviation and CAPA Management / Inspection Readiness: Assist in the maintenance of the deviation and Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA) processes; manage the tracking of responses and the verification of CAPA commitments Ensure close collaboration with the PDQ Inspections Group, and provide support for DHP products included as part of a trial DHP Team Support: Maintain awareness of the global, cross functional process landscape Serve as DHPs point of contact to the PDQ, Roche Diagnostics and other quality functions at the company Create education materials to support the companys knowledge concerning SaMD and appropriate documentation procedures Collaborate with DHPs Platform Measurement Science group to develop a Data Integrity plan for Real-World Data (RWD) generated and collected through DHP software products Support implementation and documentation of the scientific strategy for our DHP products, in close partnership with our other DHP groups, specifically Product Management and Architecture & Design Review and feedback into the DHP validation plan Identify opportunities and establish strategic partnerships with leading companies, academic institutions or working groups in the area of software quality Software Quality Assessment: Partner with DHPs Architecture & Design function to develop a Software Quality Assurance process guide for DHPs platform, along with an automated testing plan Collaborate with all DHP functions to identify and prioritize features and processes that are in support of the platforms continuous improvement Assess and develop documentation strategy for each DHP product, this may include evaluation of internal QMS relative to vendor solutions in light of constraints (cost, resource, timelines) Update the QMS and any related documentation to reflect changes and updates over the course of the lifecycle for DHP products Support a multidisciplinary team in creating a model software stack that enables late stage development projects to simply implement design controls Minimum Qualifications Passionate about using technology and data-driven approaches to help improve the lives and health of our patients Enthusiasm for Project Management principles, and 5 years experience in a project/program management environment Experience with GCP / GVP practices, as required in running clinical trials and auditing practices Demonstrated experience delivering in an evolving environment, requiring proactivity and effective problem-solving and prioritization when faced with challenges Familiarity with and past implementation of ISO25000, ISO/IEC/IEE 12207, and ISO12207 / aspects of quality and organizational excellence (CQOE) An entrepreneurial mindset, tolerance for ambiguity, and a predilection for self-direction Track record of effectively working in a matrix environment with global team members coming from scientific, business and technology backgrounds;
