“What is this life? A frenzy, an illusion,
A shadow, a delirium, a fiction.
The greatest good's but little, and this life
Is but a dream, and dreams are only dreams.”

Love, Love
What is the glory far above
All else in human life?
Love! Love!
There is no form in which the fire
Of love its traces has impressed not.
Man lives far more in love's desire
Than by life's breath, soon possessed not.
If all that lives must love or lie,
All shapes on earth, or sea, or sky,
With one consent, to Heaven cry
That the glory far above
All else in life is--
Love! O, Love!
Thou melancholy thought, which art
So fluttering and so sweet, to thee
When did I give the liberty
Thus to afflict my heart?
What is the cause of this new power
Which doth my fevered being move,
Momently raging more and more?
What subtle pain is kindled now,
Which from my heart doth overflow
Into my senses?
Pedro Calderón De La Barca

San Juan de la Cruz was temperate, even miserly: his poetical words consist of three longish lyrics and a few songs and ballads. It was a delirium, whether boisterous or reserved, bloodthirsty or pious. The lucid delirium of Cervantes, Velázquez, Calderón. Quevedo’s labyrinth of conceits. Góngora’s jungle of verbal stalactites.
Octavio Paz, Selected Poems of Rubén Darío

que el vivir sólo es soñar;
y la experiencia me enseña,
que el hombre que vive, sueña
lo que es, hasta despertar.
Sueña el rey que es rey, y vive
con este engaño mandando,
disponiendo y gobernando;
y este aplauso, que recibe
prestado, en el viento escribe
y en cenizas le convierte
la muerte (¡desdicha fuerte!):
¡que hay quien intente reinar
viendo que ha de despertar
en el sueño de la muerte!
Sueña el rico en su riqueza,
que más cuidados le ofrece;
sueña el pobre que padece
su miseria y su pobreza;
sueña el que a medrar empieza,
sueña el que afana y pretende,
sueña el que agravia y ofende,
y en el mundo, en conclusión,
todos sueñan lo que son,
aunque ninguno lo entiende.
Yo sueño que estoy aquí,
destas prisiones cargado;
y soñé que en otro estado
más lisonjero me vi.
¿Qué es la vida? Un frenesí.
¿Qué es la vida? Una ilusión,
una sombra, una ficción,
y el mayor bien es pequeño;
que toda la vida es sueño,
y los sueños, sueños son.
Petrus Calderonius de la Barca – Vita somnium est, II, 1163
Verum est ergo… reprimamus
hanc ferinam condicionem,
hanc furiam, hanc ambitionem,
ne sit, ut simus in somnio.
Nam sumus in mundo adeo singulari,
ut vivere tantum somnium sit;
et experientia ostendit mihi,
quod homo vivens, dum vivit,
somniat talem, qualis sit,
se usque ad surrectionem.
Somniat Rex se Regem, et sic vivit
in hac fallacia: imperans,
regens et iubens;
et hunc plausum, quem acceperat
praestitum, in ventos
et in cineres convertit
mors (acris miseria!):
ah, quis conaretur imperare,
sciens se debere surgere postea
in somnio mortis?!
Somniat dives in suis divitiis,
de quibus magnopere curat;
somniat pauper se pati angustias,
miserias et paupertatem;
somniat, qui meliorari incipit,
somniat, qui consecrat et molitur,
somniat, qui damnat et offendit,
et in mundo denique
omnes somniant, quod ipsi sunt,
etsi nemo id intelligit.
Ego somnio me exstare hic,
ex istis carceribus sublatum;
et somniavi me in alio statu
leviore, molliore, fuisse.
Quid est vita? Phrenesis.
Quid est vita? Illusio,
umbra, fictio,
et summum bonum parvum;
nam tota vita somnium est;
et somnia, somnia sunt.

LIFE IS A DREAM
We live, while we see the sun,
Where life and dreams are as one;
And living has taught me this,
Man dreams the life that is his,
Until his living is done.
The king dreams he is king, and he lives
In the deceit of a king,
Commanding and governing;
And all the praise he receives
Is written in wind, and leaves
A little dust on the way
When death ends all with a breath.
Where then is the gain of a throne,
That shall perish and not be known
In the other dream that is death?
Dreams the rich man of riches and fears,
The fears that his riches breed;
The poor man dreams of his need,
And all his sorrows and tears;
Dreams he that prospers with years,
Dreams he that feigns and foregoes,
Dreams he that rails on his foes;
And in all the world, I see,
Man dreams whatever he be,
And his own dream no man knows.
And I too dream and behold,
I dream I am bound with chains,
And I dreamed that these present pains
Were fortunate ways of old.
What is life? a tale that is told;
What is life? a frenzy extreme,
A shadow of things that seem;
And the greatest good is but small,
That all life is a dream to all,
And that dreams themselves are a dream.
By Pedro Calderón de la Barca / 1635

MONÓLOGO DE SEGISMUNDO LA VIDA ES SUEÑO, Ato I, Cena I Pedro Calderón de la Barca
“Ai miserável de mim e infeliz! Apurar, ó céus, pretendo, já que me tratais assim, que delito cometi contra vós outros, nascendo; que, se nasci, já entendo qual delito hei cometido: bastante causa há servido vossa justiça e rigor, pois que o delito maior do homem é ter nascido. E só quisera saber, para apurar males…

“Hoja a hoja y rayo a rayo
Se desaten a porfía
Todas las luces del día,
Todas las flores de mayo;
Padezca mortal desmayo
De envidia al mirarme el Sol,
Y cómo a tanto arrebol
El girasol ver desea,
La flor de mis luces sea
Siendo el Sol mi girasol.”
