Let's talk about Delly Cartwright.
Do you like her character?
What do you think about Katniss' description of her: "Delly Cartwright is a pasty-faced, lumpy girl with yellowish hair"
How did you feel about her exclusion from the movies?
What do you think happened to her after the war?
Do you have any fancast?
Any fanfic with Delly as main character or with her POV of the book events?
Thank you :D
@curiousnonny
I love Delly (don't I say that with most characters? Man it's almost like Collins writes amazing characters).
I think this is a desription colored with a bit of greif, jealously and general attitude of someone who is in a lot of pain emotonally. I genueonly don't think Katniss would be so harsh on poor Dell's if Peeta wasn't hijacked and out of her reach. At that point, even if nothing romantic is going on Delly is getting to do what she wants: help Peeta, try and bring him back. Her not giving her a glowing report makes sense.
I, as usual, kinda wish they'd kept her but in Dellys case I understand actually? Mostly cause it'd be difficult with the small amount of time we get with her to get the context we need for her helping Peeta. Doing all that with the time amount of time she is present in the story would be tricky.
I have no fancasts of spesiifc fanfics in mind, however!
I like to beleive she and Katniss become close friends. Mostly because I want so badly for Katniss to be surrounded by bright, postive and loving people and Delly fits that bill :).

@curiousnonny I am a Delly Cartwright Fan. Huge one.
I feel like Delly is the most misunderstood character. It's a shame that they removed her from the movies. She was a powerful connection to Peeta's life during his recovery from the Hijacking. In the movies they used Prim, but it made no sense because Prim didn't have an understanding of Peeta prior to the Hunger Games. Prim only knew Peeta post-74th Hunger Games. In my head canon Delly was present for everything including postwar.
Katniss's description often makes a lot of people picture Delly as a bad guy but Delly was not - she was more. Yet on a subconscious level, we often compare Delly to the other blonde - Madge. And we see Madge as a good person because of the way Katniss describes her as pretty. Society values 'pretty' people and villainizes 'ugly' people. The Princess is always beautiful and the witch is always a hag. Both Madge and Delly have layers like onions.
The fandom makes a lot of noise because Madge brought medicine to Gale. Yet we never really take a beat to recognize that Delly helped bring Peeta back to Katniss.
Delly does something no one in District 13 could do- she reminds Peeta of his humanity. She went toe to toe with a Hijacked Peeta, something no one would dare. She did it because she understood that in the deepest part of Peeta, he was still a good person who was fear-conditioned to be and act differently than who he really was.
Delly understood how important Katniss was to Peeta. How much he pined for her, the risks he took in giving Katniss those loves of bread, and how much he understood and respected Katniss.
Delly is the Mirror to Peeta. She's inherently good. She's strong. She's a survivor - not for nothing but Gale brought the people he was most familiar with from the Seem with him to the forest. (IE Thom, Greasy-Sae, Leevy, just to name a few) It's my headcanon that Delly did the same for the Merchants she saved her brother, and as many as she could. But also because she is the Mirror to Peeta she probably has survivor guilt. All of those people she couldn't save haunt her.
Why does Katniss describe her the way she does?
Katniss at this point in the story is so far removed from who she is and is simply coping, she's living - in a semi-detached catatonic way. So when Delly comes around and is this bubbly bright happy person despite having lost her parents it's jarring to Katniss. It's like a cynical New Yorker who needs 2 cups of coffee to crack an eye open - meets a perky out of towner morning person.
Not knowing Delly was angling to bring enough memories to Peeta's mind so that he could begin the deconstruction of real memories versus the implanted fake ones.
I do have a Fancast Nicola Coughlan during her Derry Girl years.

I do like Delly's character from what we see. She's positive, caring, and stands up for others. I like that she gives us a little context for Peeta's old life, before the Games.
As for Katniss's description, while it certainly isn't flattering for Delly, it's in the context of comparing her to the pretty redheaded Avox, Lavinia, after Peeta covered for Katniss by saying they looked alike. Katniss is very straight-forward and blunt, especially in her own thoughts and she's currently flustered by her situation.
I understand her exclusion in the movies and I'm fine with it, though I thought Prim was sort of a dumb choice to replace her with, considering in the movies Prim and Peeta have no relationship and she's Katniss's sister. Haymitch or Effie would have been a better choice. Just because they're both blonde doesn't make them interchangeable!
I think she goes back to Twelve with her brother, helps Peeta and Katniss integrate back into the fabric of Twelve's social life, and marries someone. I headcanon she meets someone in Thirteen and she's such a ray of sunshine in a cold, militaristic place they fall in love with her and follow her to Twelve to woo her.
The one Delly-POV fic I can think of is The Train Back to Panem by Missgarfield where Delly and Thom get together. It's a very sweet romance set during Twelve's rebuilding. I know I've read lots of fic with Delly as the side character.

Delly yaaaaaaassss my girl. I love Delly's character because, hear me out, in Mockingjay, Delly talks about how awesome she's always thought Katniss was, and while Katniss comments that this is just who Delly is, she is genuinely kind and just likes people, the way Delly talks still comes off as a little... strong? Socially awkward? It just fascinates me to compare Delly's character with Peeta's, whose kindness we associate with sincerity, just like Katniss does with Delly's, but Peeta's kindness also comes with charm and charisma, which he uses effectively to manipulate the Capitol audiences. Even Gale comments in Catching Fire, on how it's difficult it is to dislike Peeta, because he's just so damn... nice. Compare that to Haymitch and Katniss's shock over the way Delly describes Katniss in Mockingjay and how they just don't know what to do with it. And I think it's because they can't see how it benefits her to be nice, other than... she just is. Peeta's kindness is usually genuine, but at times, he can wield it as a weapon, and that's something Haymitch and Katniss can understand.
Everybody seems to like Peeta, but Delly seems to like everybody.
As for the way Katniss describes her, I think it smacks of jealousy. Katniss, my girl, you can be so petty at times, lol. I think it's entirely likely that Delly wasn't exceptionally, aesthetically beautiful. And Katniss, whose default mode is prickly and protective, is jealous of Delly's ability to be genuinely kind and friendly to most people. That makes her description of Delly come off as almost... cruel. Especially when you compare it to how Katniss thinks about Delly's inner qualities and personality during Mockingjay.
Her exclusion from the movies is one of the things that really ticks me off, although I had a feeling when they cut Madge out that Delly would face the same fate for the movies. Madge and Delly are the only named, non-romantically involved, district 12 friends we have for Katniss and Peeta, respectively. Their exclusion from the movies removes some of the depth of the stories and the main characters. I get why they did it, time constraints blah blah blah, but this goes back to my point about it working better as a series than a movie.
Anyways. I have to hope that Delly survived the war. There was no reason for her to leave District 13, even though she was old enough to be training as a soldier, I doubt she's someone 13 would have sent to the frontlines. I can't imagine her doing well in military training, given how nice she is, so it's my belief that 13 would have trained her for something else. I don't think she would've stayed in 13, though. I think she probably found a way to convince 13 to take her to the Capitol so she could be there to help Peeta recover from his burns and maybe continue what she was doing to help him recover from the hijacking.
I have two theories I go back and forth on as to what she does after Peeta returns to 12. Sometimes I think that she stayed on with Dr. Aurelius for a while and trained to become what would amount to a psychologist/therapist in Panem. I don't think she stayed in the Capitol for long, though. I think at some point, she'd want to come home to 12. She could always conduct her education through a mixture of correspondence and trips to the Capitol and other districts. My other theory is that she resumes her parents' trade, making shoes, and contributes to the rebuilding process that way, and she picks up a few other tangential skills as well while she's at it. For wither theory, when she comes home depends on how old her younger brother is and what he winds up wanting to do. Usually, though, I think he'd want to return to 12 with her to ceremonially bury their parents and help rebuild the district.

Well, well, well, let's have a chat shall we?
There's a few things that you need to know about me:
1- I LOVE minor characters.
2- I LOVE when said characters are apparently irrelevant and end up being crucial to our hero in some way;
That being said...
I LOVE Delly Cartwright. I don't know why, because I liked her from the beginning, when Peeta mentions her name and how "similar" she was to the Avox girl. Something about the name made her sound so welcoming and approachable.
DESCRIPTION: My first thought when Katniss described her was that probably Delly wasn't like that at all. Katniss describes her in a sort of belittling way. To me it sounded like how a girl with a crush would describe another girl that she believed to be a closer friend to said crush. Something like "oh she's not even that pretty", so I'm not sure how much we should take her depiction of Delly as accurate.
From that point forward, Delly's physical appearance is in the sidelines: she ends up being an important part of Peeta's recovery and probably in his rediscovery of his feelings for Katniss (remember how she snapped at him for being rude to Katniss in the cafeteria?)
MOVIES: I was sad that she wasn't included in the movies. I know having Prim being the one to visit Peeta was simpler, but come on... it made no sense at all. The book specifically says they chose Delly because she had no connection to Katniss.
AFTER THE WAR: I think Delly came back to District 12 after the war. She had a little brother to look after. Given all the trauma the two must have faced, I think it might be easier for her to come back, instead of going to a different district.
FANCAST: Eliza Taylor will always be Delly Cartwright in my mind.
Tumblr media
FANFICS: I always loved Delly, and when I started my first fic "Letters From New Panem" I knew I wanted her to play a sort of big role. I needed a romantic pair for her and ended up going with Thom (another minor character that I liked a lot.) I ended up falling in love with this pairing, and that led to my very first Thelly centric fic "The train Back to Twelve". I would love to stand here and tell you that my favorite Delly fic was written by someone else, but truth be told, there's not that many! (And even though there's a ton of fic authors who write way better than me, if I'm being honest, I do love my plot line, and the way I imagined them coming together after the war.)
It came to the point that now Thelly is a distinctive feature in all my HG fics.

ugh, love her. optimistic, homely queen in a dystopia.
as above. it's at the very least realistic and at most kind of refreshing. Delly may not be pretty but her good qualities shine through regardless; she is known more for her kindness and sensitivity than her looks, or lack thereof. tho I do think it's notable Katniss calls her "lumpy," which I interpret as being a bit chubbier, when Katniss has also said that fat is seen as a good thing in 12, because it means you've found a way to be well fed. but idk "lumpy" has a more negative connotation.
I see her as one of the people who come back to D12 eventually after the war. I differ on whether she'd become a cobbler like her parents or something else. I'll decide if it comes up in SOO lol
no fancast. but like, an overweight actor please.
honestly, this exclusion I kinda understand. like if we *had* to cut minor characters, Delly is really only important in Mockingjay, as someone from Peeta's past who's able to support him in hijacking recovery. maybe combining her and Madge's character could've been a solution?
I can't think of any rn where she's the main character but good Peeta-centric fic tends to feature her a lot: Standing and The Strongest Among Him. Fernwithy's End of the World series expands on Delly when she's around (she develops a friendship with Haymitch, which I appreciate). also I wrote a fic Gym Class that portrays a different side of Delly, to say the least haha

I like her a lot! I don’t know much about her, but I think she helped Peeta and I’m grateful for that.
I don’t really use descriptions when I see read people in books (I’ve always seen Coriolanus with brown hair, Lucy Gray with jet black curls or blonde) so I honestly don’t care much for it.
I was a bit sad they replaced her important little bit with Prim, especially because it didn’t make as much sense, but I get why they did it so it’s a 50/50. Kind of like Madge.
I think she probs stayed in D12 after the war. She definitely gives off family-centered girl vibes so I think she’d want to stay with her remaining friends and family, and was probably friends or at least acquaintances with Katniss and Peeta.
Unfortunately I don’t have any fancasts or anything for her, nor fanfiction for the hunger games in general.
Most of my fanfic consumption is admittedly marauders or hp new gen, with some byler exceptions. I think I’ve read maybe 2 total fanfics from the hunger games in general (an AU if Prim was reaped, and Peeta’s POV) lol.
Feel free to add or anything in the comments bc I know this isn’t as long as they usually are. I don’t rlly know the original trio of books as well as I should lol, and if I did I’d probably have more to add.
As always, ty for the question, @curiousnonny !

I've always liked Delly Cartwright and was disappointed that we didn't get her in the movies, especially when Peeta was rescued in Mockingjay. As one of the few characters we see that are close to Peeta, I feel like her inclusion in the movies would have added to the depth of Peeta's character, giving us more history and story to him that was missing in the movies. I feel like she was especially missed during Peeta's post-rescue recovery since she was one of the only people who didn't have a connection to Katniss that was in District 13.
Katniss' description of Delly lets us know that she, like Peeta, is from the merchant side of District 12, similar in skin tone and hair colour to Prim and Mrs Everdeen but being "lumpy" implies that she lives in the merchant side and that her parents business (forgot what it was) must be somewhat successful in the district, as it implies that she's got more access to food.
Since after the bombing of District 12, she ended up in District 13 with her brother, my assumption is that she probably stayed there until District 12 was fixed up and likely returned there. Whether she decided to remain there forever or eventually moved to another district, I'm not sure since we don't know all that much about her.
No fancasts or fanfics of Delly from me, I've never been one to have fancasts tbh

Hi nonny, thank you for the question ❤️
Yes, I do like Delly's character. When I first read the book I saw Delly as a loyal friend. Although, I don't know why (I haven't read Mockingjay in years) I assumed that she and Peeta had grown apart somewhat some years ago and that her coming in to help him with his treatment was a sign of how decent and good she is because they weren't necessarily that close anymore. I honestly don't know where I got that impression from, but I like it.
I've always thought that Katniss's description of Delly comes from a place of distrust, self-hatred, and jealousy. I remember Katniss said that most people in D12 can't afford to eat enough to be considered overweight nor would the people in D12 look down on someone for that, they'd be jealous that person had enough money to do that. When Katniss calls her a lumpy, pasty-faced, girl with yellow hair she immediately calls her nice and friendly afterward as if to make up for her own nasty description to herself in her mind which, to me, implies guilt. It's giving "She's not even pretty!" to me. I also am fairly sure that Katniss was feeling sour because, although she didn't want to see Peeta, Peeta had made it clear he didn't want to see her at all during his visiting hours and would rather have Delly visit. So she was placing those emotions of anger at him and hatred at herself on Delly, which was totally unwarranted but understandable. In short, she was just being a mean teenage girl for a moment, but, her feelings were coming from an understandable place.
I hate that she was taken out of the movie, for the same reason that I hate that they took out Madge from the movies. I think that it flattens D12 and Peeta and Katniss as well. Taking out these small side characters means that the audience sees less of what D12 was like for regular people, sees less of the dynamics and pasts of the characters with other people, and just gets to know the main characters less. I understand the argument for how movies need to make cuts, focus on political commentary, etc. But Mockingjay was literally a two-part movie, come on. Plus, I might be biased, but I think the movie just made it seem like Peeta had no life to speak of before the games? Delly's existence is a link to his childhood. Also, it adds to the devastation and sadness of Mockingjay because she's his only surviving friend.
I do have a fancast, but it's not serious and I might change my mind later. For now, I kind of wish Nicola Coughlan played Delly although I'm still not convinced she looks like Delly to me, it's purely a vibes cast here.
I don't think I've ever read a Delly POV fanfic, but I think we see a lot of great Delly action in The Goodwife and the Grandmentor and in one more fic... I want to say Good Again? Or is it the Long Road? Idk, but I'm a sucker for Delly marrying someone from town and becoming a farmer, but I also love lesbian Delly who makes it in the big city, idk why.
Thanks for the ask @curiousnonny!

hello again, it has been a long time since I've seen you!
I liked Delly Cartwright, I thought she was sweet! And she seems really adorable based on her character description. I am not completely sure what Suzanne Collins meant when she called her "lumpy". That can mean clumsy and awkward, chubby, or all three. I've always imagined Delly as all three! I imagine her as a pale, kinda chubby girl with orangey-blonde hair, who is awkward, clumsy, and very kind. I pretty much imagined her as a ray of sunshine lol.
I did not like her exclusion from the movies, just like I disliked Madge's exclusion. I think it is usually never a good idea to cut characters, especially Madge. She was very important imo and I really wish they had her in the films. Though Delly's role was technically not as important, I still think she had her place. She was very helpful in Peeta's recovery, and if they would have kept in all the Avox scenes, Delly's character would have been needed as she was Peeta's excuse for Katniss recognizing Lavinia. And I really wish the movies explained Avoxes. I do not have a fancast for Delly, though I do have a pretty clear idea in my head of what she'd look like, and I am sure there would be an actress suited to play her. I just don't think she looks like any actresses I am aware of.
I don't think I've ever seen a Delly-centric fic, but that sounds interesting! iirc, she spent a lot of time with Peeta after he was hijacked. And they were childhood friends, so there could be a lot of interesting scenes between them showing their friendship, and further characterizing her and Peeta.

Do you like her character?
I feel indifferent about her. She's gone as quickly as she appeared, and feels very out-of-nowhere. She serves a single purpose, and I wish Collins would have had her in the background at some point so she doesn't feel so out of nowhere, or replaced with an altogether different character.
I wish that Madge had survived and taken up Delly's part. I know Peeta might remember her as Katniss' friend, but also I don't care soooo
What do you think about Katniss' description of her: "Delly Cartwright is a pasty-faced, lumpy girl with yellowish hair"
Not much, really. It's not a nice description, but Katniss isn't always the nicest in describing people.
How did you feel about her exclusion from the movies?
One of the few characters whose exclusion made a lot of sense and whose lack of appearance improved the scene significantly.
What do you think happened to her after the war?
I think she just went on with her life as best she could. Don't think she stayed in 13, obviously, and I find the information we receive about her so limited that it's hard to guess what she did after the war. Maybe she went back to 12 or went around exploring Panem. Both are just as likely.

I'll be honest. It's been close to 10 years since I read the series so I don't remember much—if anything at all—about Delly Cartwright lol
I did a quick reading on her on The Hunger Games Wiki to jog my memory. Honestly, I think it's okay that she was excluded from the movies. Sure, it would've been nice to learn more about Peeta's backstory in the films, but Dolly Cartwright isn't crucial to the story.
Based on Delly's description on the Wiki, the first actress who came to mind was Florence Pugh; however, I'd like someone lesser known to play such a small role because I think someone as popular as Florence would be a distraction for such a small role. I think it'd be great to have an Indigenous actor play Delly Cartwright since it's likely many of the District 12 citizens Indigenous.

What do you think about Hijacked Peeta storyline in Mockingjay?
Is it narrative-ly satisfied for Peeta's arc?
Thank you,
@curiouspeetamellark
Hi there @curiouspeetamellark =)
Sorry about the wait. So many things from work happening. I have a list of asks to go through this weekend. Disclaimer: I'm not super good at analyzing lit. =D I think Peeta's hijacking was such an important part of his story arc. I mean, the boy with the bread who didn't want to be a piece in the games becomes a piece in the games?! Such irony and sadness for his character that showed his strength and resilience. He came back to Katniss after the hijacking, and he worked hard to fulfill his promise or life goal of protecting her. I mean, what more can you ask for? I love that in Mockingjay, Peeta went through all the motions and emotions. I loved the part when he was talking to Katniss while he had three restraints on his body and a knockout drug ready to be injected into him. I mean, it's hard to read about this part because I love his character so much, but I didn't think he would be this way after reading the first book. What a total 180! In Mockingjay, Peeta went from strangling Katniss to being rude to her the first time he talked to her again, to ridiculing her in the cafeteria (where Delly defended Katniss), to playing Real and Not Real just so he could get a hang of the swirls of images in his head, to attacking Katniss again but killing Mitchell instead, to asking to die, to giving Katniss the lamb stew, to asking to be left behind because he's a mutt, to following Katniss while she tries to kill snow, to voting 'no' to Capitol children going back into the arena because we have to stop treating each other as enemies, to stopping Katniss from taking the nightlock pill and getting bit by her, to being left behind so he could get better, to planting primroses in Katniss' garden, to growing back with her (Peeta bakes, I hunt, Haymitch raises geese), to having a family with Katniss fifteen years later. I mean [mindblown] In all of these, we get flourishes of his witty self like: "Never underestimate the power of a brilliant stylist." “Well, then you just became our most valuable asset.” These are moments and words that only Peeta could deliver perfectly despite his hijacking. I'm not quite sure how to end my answer now, hahaha. But yeah, for me, Peeta's character arc is not complete without the hijacking. It also won't be as beautiful. Take care @curiouspeetamellark

Delly. Woah, that's a hard question, because we don't have that much information about her in the books. And she was completly cut out from the movies.
I think Katniss, who is usually quite neutral about people's appearances (unless it's Peeta or Prim), has some bias towards Delly, because Delly was one of the girls from her school and Katniss was very skeptic towards her class mates. She was even wary around Madge, who she would end up describing as a friend.
So I guess Katniss really didn't see her in any flattering light. But this might make her description very harsh. Delly isn't presented to us like she is pretty at all.
To me, Delly is in direct contrast to Katniss, being her opposite appearance wise. She is supposed to model the "normal merchant child" as having enough to eat and doesn't look worn out, because she didn't have to work early on, like Katniss and Gale did.
But that makes her actually a good character. She has all those traits, Katniss dislikes, because Katniss thinks they have it so easy. Through Peeta, we know, that's simply not true. All of the people in the districts went through hardship in life.
It's clear, that Delly is still a very positive, friendly person and it underlines, that Katniss' narrative towards the merchant people was wrong. Of course, there were individuals such as Peeta's mother, who is quite unpleasant to be around.
Delly was very crucial to Peeta's healing process in my opinion, because he really needed a non-threatening person from D12 to remind him of home, since there was nobody of his family left.
But I can understand why they cut out such a minor character from the movies, with the focus clearly being on Katniss and making it a war movie (but it's actually an anti-war movie). I also think they would have used Delly in the movies to give Katniss a situation, where she can act jealous towards Peeta. So I'm glad they didn't do that. I don't think Katniss would've been jelly towards Delly, because she is the wrong person for that.
And also jealousy as a trope can really backfire on the story and putting up a whole other question, so I'm glad THG didn't use it that much. (Again, another pin point for another post)
Fan cast... actually haven't thought about that one a lot, but from the tip of my tongue I would say:
Tumblr media
Nicola Coughlan- I love love love her and I'm so looking forward towards the next season of Brigerton!
And I think Delly went back to D12 after the war and rebuild the town. She owns a plant's shop and is into farming. And yes, she knitts a lot. Sometimes she comes over to Katniss and Peeta for a cup of tea.
She will not be the main character, but a strong side character in my upcoming multi-chap "Jabberjay", where Peeta's and Katniss' roles are reversed in mockingjay. I have a headcanon, that she and Peeta are really close friends from the time before the Games, and she was one of the few people to visit him in his house after the first Games. So, she will play a crucial role in this story. (but I think I will only start uploading in November, because I still have to work out some aspects of the plot)
Thanks, @curiousnonny
