Il padre della ragazza aveva un fratellastro (non di sangue) che la chiama e le dice di andare da lui a vivere per un pò. Jake, ha due figli, Caleb e Noah. Quando la ragazza si presenta da loro, all'inizio le fanno capire un pò la vita che l'attenderà. Purtroppo anche se a lei non potrebbe piacere quella vita, essendo minorenne, 17 anni, non può vivere da sola ma con il tutore Jake. Lei ha una storia con lui, perde la sua verginità ma Caleb è segretamente innamorato di lei, glielo fa capire in ogni modo alla fine si fidanzano, ma quando l'inverno passa i due iniziano un pò a litigare, lei lascia la casa in montagna e torna a casa sua avendo compiuto i 18 anni. Inizia la scuola ma dopo un mese Caleb va a riprenderla e alla fine si fidanzano e hanno anche un bambino.

“Yeah,” I said quietly. “It symbolizes a need to engage in self-destructive behavior. It’s not that uncommon.”

While driving, we think, even for just a moment, about jerking the steering wheel into oncoming traffic or leaping off the balcony of a ship and into the abyss of the black water below. They’re passing thoughts and little dares we allow our psyche, because we’re tired of not living and we want the fear. We want to remember why we want to live.

I stopped, gazing at her.

“The call of the void,” I murmured.

Was she right? Was that what bound us together? Like recognizes like, after all, and we lived in that need to go a step further and feel everything we were capable of. The fear was terrifying, but coming out the other side redefined our reality.

Book Review: Punk 57 - Penelope Douglas (Potential Spoilers)

Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗 - 4.5/5 Title: Punk 57 Author: Penelope Douglas

Description: Two people become pen-pals when they were children. They had been inseparable even though they hadn’t met each other. Something happens and Misha stops replying although there were many efforts from Ryen to get him to do so. When Misha appears at the school under a different name, he knows who Ryen is, but she has no clue who she is, and she’s different than she described herself through their letters. 

Reason for rating: I actually really loved this book and thought that it was really original and well put together. You don’t read books nowadays that have pen pal situations so that’s what really got me going. The first half of the book, amazing. It had me enthralled, I wanted to flip through every page and get through it really quickly, I had made up my mind that I loved the book at that point. I loved the premise of being pen pals and not seeing each other and then getting to know each other the old fashioned way. The ending was predictable which knocked it down a star, but other than that, it was a great book that kept me flipping through every page.

★ Who are your auto-buy romance authors? My list is huge, but @penelope.douglas has been one of my auto-buy authors for several years. The Devil’s Night series is my favorite dark romance series, and Birthday Girl is one of my favorite age gap romances (which is one of my favorite tropes). I have a lot of nostalgia for the Devil’s Night series and miss these characters a lot … especially Will and Emory, and yes, Damon. They’re all great though—if you’re a fan of dark romance, I can’t recommend this series enough. I even convinced my husband to listen to Birthday Girl and yeah … he gets it 🤣 Have you read any books by Penelope Douglas?
