Are dolphins still being captured for aquariums/parks and is it ethical (or complicated?)
Thanks for the ask! Yes, captures unfortunately do still occur in unregulated countries, though far less frequently than in the past. One of the most infamous examples is the annual dolphin drive in Taiji, Japan. While the main purpose of this hunt is to kill animals for meat, a small number of young, attractive dolphins are kept alive each year for sale. Nowadays, only unaccredited institutions purchase these dolphins, and even the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums now prohibits its members from acquiring captured dolphins. Although Taiji is the most well-known, the majority of cetaceans captured from the wild in the 2000s/2010s came from Russia, which recently prohibited the practice.
Western parks and aquariums have not purchased wild-captured cetaceans in decades. The last captures in US waters occurred in 1989, and the last foreign imports were in the early 1990s (long before widespread public sentiment turned against dolphinariums). I do not believe the practice was ethical, and almost all my colleagues would agree with me. Some of them were indeed brutal affairs, such as the infamous Penn Cove captures, in which several young Southern Resident killer whales (including the famous Tokitae) were taken. Multiple animals were inadvertently killed, and the hunters clumsily attempted to hide the deaths by stuffing the whales’ corpses with rocks. The bodies resurfaced, and following public backlash orca captures were no longer performed in the US.
As awareness of animal welfare grew amongst scientists and the general public in the 70s and 80s, collections of smaller cetacean species became considerably less vicious. They were typically supervised by a veterinarian, and care was taken to ensure animals were not physically harmed. However, these were still undeniably stressful to the animals.
I’m glad the practice stopped. Dolphins are not endangered, and I don’t think we can justify the trauma of removing healthy young animals from their pods. Of course, I make exceptions for individuals that are ill, injured, or a danger to themselves or humans (like Clearwater Marine Aquarium’s Izzy)—and these situations are never taken lightly. And if a species ever became endangered (highly unlikely for bottlenose, but a possibility for belugas), that would also be cause for reevaluation.
Dolphins do quite well in modern accredited aquariums. In the United States, all managed dolphins were either born in human care or have been out of the wild for over 30 years (excluding non-releasable rescues). While there are valid concerns about cetacean captivity, ongoing wild capture is not one of them.

NICOLÁS CASTILLO ALDERS (PETER GADIOT) IS LOOKING FOR...
Connection: Challenger/Rival to the Alpha
Suggested Name: UTP
Age Range: 21-40
Species: Werewolf
Suggested FCs: A.J. Saudin, Alaqua Cox, Darren Barnet, Brenda Song, Elliot Knight, Harvey Guillén, Hannah John-Kamen, Sivan Aylra Rose, Kelly Marie Tran, Nicole Byer, or UTP
Connection Description:
Looking for another werewolf to be an immediate challenger to Nico’s position as Alpha in the Lunar Cove Pack.
Nico swooped back into town in August 2022 after a decade away, and not everyone can be happy with that. His mother Saskia Alders was the Alpha until February 2022, and after that there was a brief period of several months where the Second-in-Command was running things. It’s well-known to older members of the pack that Nico never wanted the role—until now, apparently.
Your character could know him or be a stranger, could be a newcomer or part of the pack for a while, but one thing’s for sure—you could do a better job as Alpha than he will, and you mean to prove it.
There is no need to contact the player before applying:
Penn is available for DMs on @nicocastillo !!

Tokitae, the star of Miami Seaquarium, dies after half a century in captivity
In August 1970, Tokitae’s ordeal began in the calm waters of Penn Cove, Whidbey Island – a quiet island off the coast of Washington state. Men with long sticks and guns corralled a group of resident killer whales, separating mothers from their calves. At least a dozen of those whales died during the capture, and more than 50 were kept for captive display. Toki was probably only a few years old at the time of her capture.
Toki is survived by her L-pod relatives living in the Salish Sea, including the 95-years-old whale believed to be her mother. [x]

One of the greatest accomplishments and milestones, as an artist, is finishing your first ever mural. I was commissioned to come down to Penn Cove, WA and paint a piece of Tokitae that would send a message. Many years ago, in 1970, 80 whales were rounded up in Penn Cove. 7 of these whales would be taken for a life of captivity, Tokitae included. 5 orcas would drown in the capture process and their bodies would be cut open and filled with rocks so as to sink them. Their bodies were secretly disposed of to prevent them being added to the tally of whales caught during this process. Throughout the years, each orca taken from the captured died a premature death. None reaching their average life expectancy. All except for one: Tokitae. Despite some of the most deplorable conditions known to man and orca captivity history, Tokitae managed to outlive her kin. She has been surviving in what is known as “The Whale Bowl” in Miami Seaquarium. This tank is falling apart, doesn’t keep up to code, and is slowly turning into Tokitae’s tomb. It is hoped that the Dolphin Company, Florida officials, and veterinarian staff will do the right thing and bring Tokitae home to the Puget Sound. Let her live the rest of her days in a seapen, retired from entertainment and a lifetime of mistreatment.
If you’d like to visit this mural, go to Scenic Heights on Whidbey Island. Follow the road and look for the house with orcas!

My new wall section at Penn Cove Gallery. Our 2-D artists finished our quarterly rotation tonight, and it looks great! It's nights like these that remind me what a great thing we have going here at the gallery. Team members stepped up and hung the work of other members who weren't able to make it. I think we're all set for spring, now!6 . Speaking of team members, we still have a spot or two for new artists to join. Having been here at the gallery for over four years (and now with the role of President) I have a real passion for Penn Cove Gallery, and for co-ops in general. I’ve bolded those names who are either current or former members of the BJU Board of Trustees. UPDATE: I eliminated this indication after receiving all the names who signed.
The men present who voted unanimously were either all of those or some of those. We don’t know. We can presume that the Officers were all likely present: Kevin Schaal, Gordan Dickson, Taigen Joos, Bud Steadman, and Michael Privett.
Who abstained? Bob III didn’t. Mike Harding as a present BJU Board member? Stephen Jones as a very absent member of the Royal family? Mark Minnick as a current employee?
The only name on there that I can guarantee did not abstain was Don Johnson, but he’s an old friend of mine. ;)
What do you think?
UPDATE, May 15, 2023:
The Positives have added an unredacted signatory list. WutBJU will mark all those signatories on the above list in bold italics.

Captain Whidbey Inn, Whidbey Island, WA
Original Post Date July 14, 2013
Our next stop on Whidbey Island was the Captain Whidbey Inn, nestled in the heart of Ebey’s Landing National Historic Reserve in Coupeville, Washington.
It is surrounded by forest and hugs the shore of Whidbey Island’s Penn Cove.
Stepping through the Inn’s front door takes you back to 1907 when Judge Still and his men originally cut and placed the first timber and laid the stone for the Inn.
Inside, you will enjoy a 100 year tradition of outstanding Whidbey Island lodging and hospitality.
From the Captain Whidbey Inn website…
The Captain Whidbey Inn is a romantic turn of the 20th century inn for that perfect "get away" weekend in front of the fire, exploring Whidbey and the San Juan Islands or finding privacy for a corporate retreat. Stay in the delightful original log inn, our charming waterfront cabins or enjoy the tranquil view from the modern accommodations of the lagoon view rooms.

The Soils Beneath The Solar Fields - Technology Org
Solar fields are designed to channel one of our planet’s resources—sunlight—into energy. But these arrays sit atop yet another valuable resource: soil. Over the last year, Penn master’s student Hannah Winn has been posing the question, what happens to soil health following solar array construction?
Solar panels – illustrative photo. Image credit: Adolfo Cj from Pixabay, free license
The question is timely, as Penn is on the cusp of a new energy era. Starting this year, solar energy from a solar project in central Pennsylvania will meet roughly 70% of the University’s electrical demand, enabling the University to move a solid step closer to its goal of carbon neutrality by 2042. As part of the project, energy company AES, which developed the project, is supporting renewable energy research at Penn.
“It’s been super eye-opening to go to the solar farms,” Winn says. “In school everything is pretty theoretical, so to actually stand there in the solar facility and learn about the logistics involved, see how many people are involved in a long-term project like this, has been personally very impactful.”
Winn’s project emerged from this partnership. Her advisor, Professor Alain Plante of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, developed a proposal for the research in collaboration with AES’ Sustainability and Impact team.
“Any land use involves a tradeoff,” says Plante. “Some renewable energy installations may be going into areas where we’re giving up good land for food production. Here, AES was interested in knowing, in addition to the installation itself, whether the soil beneath these panels could be sequestering carbon, offering a potential co-benefit to the solar energy production.”
The work appealed to Winn, who has a background in landscape architecture and an interest in environmental policy. Starting last spring, Winn has made multiple trips to one of the solar fields, known as Great Cove 2, in Pennsylvania’s Franklin County to take soil samples and collect other information about the landscape. AES consultants had previously taken baseline soil samples to record the biological, chemical, and physical properties of the fields prior to construction, and Winn’s samples will provide a look at the soil condition in various phases of the solar field’s construction and operation.
As she writes her master’s capstone this spring, Winn will be outlining best management practices for solar arrays that could boost the carbon retained in soil, an outcome that could not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with solar facilities, but may also better preserve the land for future agricultural use.
“Soil is important for everything: for agriculture, for building, for food,” says Winn. “with this research project we’re looking at not only what happens when we put solar projects on soil, but also considering what happens when we leave.”
With society increasingly turning to renewable energy sources like solar to replace fossil fuels, studies like Winn’s will help grant a holistic understanding of impacts to the land and ecosystems, charting a path toward accelerating the benefits of clean energy projects and a more sustainable future.

I’ve been scrolling through your blog for about an hour now and wow!! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and insight. I actually live right next to Penn Cove where the infamous roundup took place so myself and the other locals are very sensitive when it comes to the whales here. You’ve opened a new door that I can’t wait to share with my whale watching group 👍💙
Thank you for your kind words! Your whales are spectacular 🤩 how wonderful that you get to see them on the regular!
You’ll have to let me know how it goes. I imagine it’s a sore subject… it was a tragic thing that never should’ve happened. But if any good came of it, I believe it was Kalina— the first “Baby Shamu”—whose father Winston was taken during the Penn Cove captures. Thanks to her and her parents’ legacy, killer whales went from widely hated to internationally adored.
