Thanks for all your words- they’ve been immensely helpful. The more time goes on the more likely that Louis is Freddie’s dad, and I’m probably at just over 50%. My anxiety is coming from the fact that if Louis is Freddie’s dad, it makes me like him less as a person slightly? Not anything heinous, but he just seems like another not super involved dad, and there’s more than enough of those in the world for me to spend time being a dedicated fan of one. I don’t want to booster the career of someone who’s not a great dad, it just hits too close to home. Examples: it really bothers me all the going out and tweeting about footie he did right after the birth, literally never ever speaking up for briana or even acknowledging the hard work of being a single mom, and then using Freddie for publicity when he was papped so much for two full years without putting in the hard work of being a full time parent (I know circumstances might explain 2016 outings, but what about 2017? He paraded him around all the time) Also if he is a dad, everything he’s ever said in interviews shows a remarkable lack of intimacy with Freddie or knowledge about his life (he’s not a dog, not caring about Halloween costumes, lying about seeing him on his 4th birthday). Again none of these things make him a bad person just - not a great dad. Also if we’re to believe everything about the custody situation and her being paid 60k a year, it really seems like Louis isn’t giving Briana what she would be owed in court, and I think the only logical explanation is Louis would attempt to gain some custody if she took him to court for the money she is due, and he held that against her. Maybe I’m reaching with this last part, but why not pay her full child support?? Ultimately, if Louis is a dad, I want him to perform being a good dad for me! It’s too much mental gymnastics to think he is a good dad otherwise. Any advice on letting go of what I want a stranger to perform for me while continuing to be a fan and ignoring what is in my face?

Oh anon - I'm glad that you've found what I've said useful and I hope you can let go of the rest of your anxiety.

I'd suggest that most of your anxiety comes from holding onto a narrow version of what is possible, both when it comes to Louis and fatherhood and the rest comes from the paradox of celebrity intimacy.

I think if you're goal is to be relaxed no matter what's going on, then the first step is stopping aiming towards certainty or indeed any explanation. You don't know how much he's paying in child support (and you certainly can't make deductions from that about how custody went down), you don't know where Louis was for Freddie's fourth birthday. Don't tell stories and then get stressed out by them. Allow that there are a lot of possibilities and that you don't know.

In general, if you find yourself going "If this statement by a tabloid by someone with second hand knowledge is true, then why would that be? The only reason I can think of is [x]." That's anxiety talking - and head back to the dry ground of 'I don't know what the fuck is going on.'

I also feel this fandom has quite a narrow idea of what is acceptable for a father, which is very different from what seems most important to either mother's or kids. One of my closest friends got pregnant to someone who already had a child in another city. She really wanted to be a mother and they were never really together. Both of them were on the benefit at the time, so she didn't name him as a father, so he didn't have to pay child support. That meant that she had money deducted from her benefit every week based on that refusal (this law was recently reversed, but was an abomination).

He was around at first, but eventually he had to go back to where his other kid was. My friend would have been hugely damaged if he'd tried to gain any custody at all, or fought her over her baby. He's remained in the child's life; he visits regularly. His other child ended up deciding to come and live with him. My friend has a new partner who is a biological father to her other children, and an active father to all her children. All the children in this story are and feel very loved by the parents I've discussed. This was the best way of navigating the situation for all the people involved. I've known heaps of fucked up way that fathers have behaved to their chidlren, and to the mothers of their children. The idea that any outsider would look at my friend's eldest and his biological father and see it as a bad outcome, let alone as a statement on the guy's character seems incredibly naieve to me; there are so many worse outcomes.

If Louis is the father, then I think it's entirely possible that he's supporting Freddie and Briana appropriately financially, and a regular figure in Freddie's life. It's also entirely possible that that level of involvement that Louis has in Freddie's life was the best for all invovled.

Finally if you want to think about Louis as a father, concentrate on what matters as a father. All the stuff about celebrity and social media doesn't matter as a father. And given how fucking weird the whole situation was, whatever you think is true, then the celebrity side was super messy. When there's so much you don't know - why stress or make assumptions?

Noobs on a plane

(with mostly me being the noob) As you may or may not know my friend and I are going to Vienna for the weekend. So far the following has happened: - I sprained my ankle on flat ground - We nearly checked in our luggage while we didn't have to bc it was handluggage - being at an aiport in the middle of the nighg results in seeing a lot of people sleeping in very creative ways - I accidentally threw my stuff all over the floor when I took out my luggage but the lady hadn't closed the zipper yet bc I was supposed to do that - a Chinese couple tried to get a suspicipus looking box through the douane with mostly signal language - we met an amazing lady from Boston and discussed universities and politics (of course) - when boarding the plane we saw the chinese couple again who smiled at us and yes the box has made it on the plane - in a surprising turn of events, we made it onto the plane unlike last time when I lost my passport and found it at the very last minute and we had to dramatically run through the rain in order to get to the plane
