as I have been learning about the historical traditions for calculating epacts, I have extracted the relevant equations. however, as one may observe, there are differing ‘techniques’ for calculating epacts. it is not immediately apparent to me which protocol the piece in question follows. once again, this will likely be resolved once I have translated the “ADMONITIONS” portion of the instructing text.

Perpetual Calendar

This instrument, made by Christian Boyling, consists of two superposed brass plates. The top plate is finely perforated and adorned with the coat of arms of the House of Saxony. We can glimpse a red silk backing

At the center of the plate is a circle divided into twenty-four hours containing three horary disks: a nocturnal based on the phases of the Moon, a perpetual calendar, and a zodiacal calendar showing the length of day and night throughout the year. Between the two plates is a rotating disk carrying twelve smaller enameled disks depicting the months (one missing). These appear one at a time through the small circular window below the three horary disks.

more detailed images better displaying the details of the piece. the images are gathered from both the library’s own conservation laboratory and my own photos and scans of the piece in question. using Lightroom, black and white filters were applied to the laboratory’s high quality .nef files in order to draw out the details of the text and inscriptions for ease of virtual inspection.

have you thought. about jenny as a foil to joyce.

i think that could work very well in some ways! joyce has something more grounded to her than jenny in terms of ability to commit to things emotionally. jenny is a fluttery little butterfly when it comes to emotional vulnerability and joyce is very willing to put her whole heart on the line. jenny also inhabits the supernatural world with just as much enthusiasm as joyce inhabits the normal/mundane world, which could lead to some really interesting conversations, especially since jenny is dating the guy who has more or less come to terms with the fact that eventually he's going to end up sacred-destinying joyce's daughter to death. (i say "interesting" bc i think jenny and joyce might possibly have some real weird energy around that subject.)

but they are also very similar! they're both straightforward and assertive women who are making a very concerted effort to carve out a niche for themselves and pursue their passion, all while juggling a significant amount of responsibility essentially solo. i feel like their differences are definitely There but at the end of the day they have very compatible energy. they could be friends.
