103: Donna Summer // I Remember Yesterday
Tumblr media
I Remember Yesterday Donna Summer 1977, Casablanca
Like most people, I have I Remember Yesterday because it’s the one with “I Feel Love” on it. That song, on which Summer, Giorgio Moroder, and Pete Bellotte essentially invented and perfected electronic dance music in the same stroke, remains worth the price of admission (which I believe was a dollar in 2015 money in this case). But how’s the rest?
youtube
Pretty uneven! At least “I Feel Love” isn’t the only keeper on it, though it’s the shiniest by a fair distance. The album labours under a janky musical conceit, with each track meant to represent a decade in chronological order from the early twentieth century through to ‘The Future.’ Opener “I Remember Yesterday” attempts to combine disco with ragtime and hot jazz, and at seven minutes (including the reprise) makes me feel like I’m at a Baz Luhrman marathon and someone has chained the theatre doors from the outside. By contrast the supposedly ‘50s-themed entry “Love’s Unkind” is an irresistible stick of bubblegum, kind of a missing link between ABBA and the singles a young Prince would begin cutting over the next few years. It melts dreamily into “Back in Love Again,” a solid and uncannily accurate Supremes pastiche that briefly abandons the record’s otherwise persistent disco rhythms.
On the flip, the James Brown-inflected funk of “Black Lady” falls a bit flat, but things immediately pick up again with “Take Me,” a state-of-the-art slab of the out-and-out disco (finally!) on which Summer built her fame. It’s as squelchy, sexy, and melodramatic as any of her best up-tempo numbers and, alongside “Love’s Unkind,” qualifies as I Remember Yesterday’s semi-hidden treasure. Momentum stalls out again on the turgid ballad “Can’t We Just Sit Down (And Talk it Over),” and then “I Feel Love” hits and we’re back in business.
I Remember Yesterday is justifiably the least acclaimed of Summer’s classic run of late ‘70s LPs, but like any album by an artist working at her peak, it’s worth at least picking over for its highlights.

Mrs. Amos' collaborator's familiar. John Philip Shenale is his name, he is a jobbing musician. I agree, I should've called him a session one, though I fear the latter position no longer has the same value as before. You see, we should admire such players. They can move through one soundscape to another. For instance, you can locate Mr. Shenale on Attitude by France Joli. The LP tried to pivot her to the 80's – she used to be closer to disco and R&B –, yet the plan didn't work out in the way any one on the disc probably assumed. I am baffled here, since she cooperated with Moroder's personnel, so she was in tune with the era. I mean, the song on the link could've been a huge hit under any other singer, which might mean her association with her previous sound proved to be too strong.

Lyrics:
Sittin' here eatin' my heart out waitin'
Waitin' for some lover to call
Dialed about a thousand numbers lately
Almost rang the phone off the wall
Lookin' for some hot stuff, baby, this evenin'
I need some hot stuff, baby, tonight
I want some hot stuff, baby, this evenin'
Gotta have some hot stuff
Gotta have some love tonight
Hot stuff
Baby, baby
Baby, baby (tonight)
I need hot stuff
Baby, baby
Baby, baby (tonight)
I want some hot stuff
Baby, baby
Baby, baby (tonight)
I need hot stuff

Baby, baby
Baby, baby (tonight)
Baby, baby
Baby, baby (tonight)
Baby, baby
Baby, baby (tonight)
Baby, baby
Baby, baby (tonight)
Lookin' for a lover who needs another
Don't want another night on my own
Wanna share my love with a warm blooded lover
Wanna bring a wild man back home
Gotta have some hot love, baby, this evenin'
I need some hot stuff, baby, tonight
I want some hot stuff, baby, this evenin'
Got to have some lovin'
Got to have love tonight
Hot stuff
Baby, baby

Album Review: Donna Summer - "I'm A Rainbow - Recovered & Recoloured"
In 2021, Donna Summer’s estate released a remixed version the I’m A Rainbow album under the title, I’m A Rainbow – Recovered & Recoloured. The I’m A Rainbow album was originally recorded in 1981 and was supposed to be released that year, but it was shelved by David Geffen at Geffen Records because he wanted her to part ways with producers Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte, who had worked with her…

LaDonna Adrian Gaines (December 31, 1948 – May 17, 2012), known by her stage name based on her married name Donna Summer, was a singer, songwriter, and actress. She gained prominence during the disco era and became known as the "Queen of Disco", while her music gained a global following. She became the lead singer of a psychedelic rock band named Crow and moved to NYC. Joining a touring version of the musical Hair, she left NY and spent several years living, acting, and singing in Europe, where she met music producers Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte in Munich, where they recorded influential disco hits such as "Love to Love You Baby" and "I Feel Love", marking her breakthrough into an international career. She returned to the US, and other hits such as "Last Dance", "MacArthur Park", "Heaven Knows", "Hot Stuff", "Bad Girls", "Dim All the Lights", "No More Tears” and "On the Radio" followed. She earned a total of 42 hit singles on the US Billboard Hot 100 in her lifetime, with 14 of those reaching the top ten. She claimed a top-40 hit every year between 1975 and 1984, and from her first top-ten hit in 1976 to the end of 1982, she had 12 top-ten hits, more than any other act during that period. She returned to the Hot 100's top-five in 1983, and claimed her final top-ten hit in 1989 with "This Time I Know It's For Real". She was the first artist to have three consecutive double albums reach number one on the US Billboard 200 chart and charted four number-one singles in the US within 12 months. She charted two number-one singles on the R&B Singles chart in the US and a number-one single in the UK. Her most recent Hot 100 hit came in 1999 with "I Will Go with". While her fortunes on the Hot 100 waned through those decades, she remained a force on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart over her entire career. She was raised in the AME Church. She married Austrian actor Helmuth Sommer (1973 -1976) and gave birth to their daughter. She married Brooklyn Dreams singer Bruce Sudano (1980-), and they have two daughters. She was one of the founding members of Oasis Church in Los Angeles. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence https://www.instagram.com/p/Cm1Wprcr1I5/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

We have noticed Mr. Giorgio Moroder can be located on the credits of many musicians' platters, though there are some he could work with more than he did. An example of this might be DeBarge, one of the prominent R&B outfits of the 80's. He only did one tune with them, you can hear the piece on the link, but the composition was on their biggest seller, Rhythm Of The Night. Truth to be told, Mr. Moroder didn't seem to connect with DeBarge that much, though you do have a hunch they could do great things together, had they called him back. Then again, they may have wanted to reach him, but they sadly flamed out quickly after their greatest success, delegating a possible Moroder-DeBarge combo to a what-could-have-been.

Lyrics:
I remember you now
Just like a summer in the rain, yes I do
Been tryin' to hold back all these feelings
For so long, now I'll tell you
Give it up, I just can't take it
Leave it up, you'll never make it
Give it up, you should have tried
But just one thing, I wanna know why
Mr. Haze, what are you thinking of?
Mr. Haze, gimme, gimme, gimme your love
You make me happy
I think of you when things go wrong, yes I do
You make the sun shine
And my wishes, they come true, now I'll tell you
Give it up, I just can't take it
Leave it up, you'll never make it
Give it up, you should have tried
But just one thing, I wanna know why
Mr. Haze, what are you thinking of?
Mr. Haze, gimme, gimme, gimme your love
Mr. Haze, is this a sign from above?
Mr. Haze, gimme, gimme, gimme your love
Mr. Haze, what are you thinking of?
Mr. Haze, gimme, gimme, gimme your love
Mr. Haze, is this a sign from above?
Mr. Haze, gimme, gimme, gimme your love
Songwriter:
Mr. Haze, is it way too loud? (Gimme, gimme, gimme your love)
In my mind, in my heart
We're the faces, we were young (gimme, gimme, gimme your love)
Mr. Haze, is it way too loud? (Gimme, gimme, gimme your love)
In my mind, in my heart
We're the faces, we were young (gimme, gimme, gimme your love)
