Möwen haben häufig einen schlechten Ruf, doch sie sind wichtige Resteverwerter. Selbst in einem ausgelegten Netz lassen sich noch kleine Leckerbissen finden.

Generell müssen wir mehr zum Schutz der Meere und ihrer Bewohner tun.

Die Meere bedecken 70 % der Erdoberfläche, und Algen bzw. Bakterien produzieren dort die Hälfte des Sauerstoffs in unserer Atmosphäre. Dennoch werden unsere Ozeane bisher stiefmütterlich behandelt.  Sie wurden durch menschliche Nutzungen immer mehr zum Sorgenkind. Überfischung und Vermüllung gefährden die maritime Natur ebenso wie die enorme Zunahme der Fischfarmen mit ihren Umweltproblemen. Beim Ausbau der Windparks vor der Küste wird zu wenig Rücksicht auf die Belastbarkeit des jeweiligen Gebiets genommen: Der Lärm bei der Gründung der Fundamente für die Windrotoren beeinträchtigt die Kommunikation der Wale, Zugvögel werden durch den Betrieb bei falscher Planung gefährdet. Wenn wir die Plastikflut nicht stoppen, die sich ins Meer ergießt, werden wird bald mehr Kunststoff als Fisch im Meer haben! Und zunehmend bleiben die Netze leer, da Fische oft schon gefangen werden, ehe sie sich fortpflanzen konnten.

Die Mitgliedsstaaten der UN haben sich nun auf ein Meeresschutzabkommen geeinigt, das die biologische Vielfalt in den Ozeanen außerhalb der nationalen Hoheits- oder Wirtschaftszonen regelt. Damit soll es möglich werden, Schutzzonen auf Hoher See einzurichten. Die Hochsee umfasst immerhin zwei Drittel der Meeresflächen. Zwei Jahrzehnte wurde gestritten, jetzt liegt ein Abkommen vor, das noch juristisch geprüft und dann von allen Staaten ratifiziert werden muss. Ob China und Russland wirklich mitspielen, dies scheint noch unklar zu sein. Die EU-Kommissionspräsidentin Ursula von der Leyen betonte per Twitter: „Wir haben es geschafft!“. Nun ja, sicherlich ist das Meeresschutzabkommen ein Fortschritt, doch es wird auf die Umsetzung ankommen. Dies zeigt sich auch beim Green Deal der EU, wo plötzlich die Kernkraft zur nachhaltigen Energie mutierte. Das Meeresschutzabkommen ist bisher eine Sammlung von Verfahrensregeln, doch der Streit wird bei der Festlegung konkreter Schutzgebiete wieder aufflammen.

Für die Tier- und Pflanzenwelt in unseren Meeren kommt es auf die schnelle und konsequente Umsetzung von Schutzgebieten an, und diese sind auch wichtig für die Sauerstoffproduktion in den Ozeanen. Es kommt aber in besonderer Weise auch darauf an, dass weniger Müll und andere Schadstoffe über die Flüsse in die Ozeane gelangen. Und wer die Fischerei als Nahrungsquelle für die Menschheit sichern möchte, der muss sich für einen umfassenderen Schutz der Fischgründe einsetzen. Bergbauprojekte auf der Hochsee müssen auf den ökologischen Prüfstand! Dies gilt in gleicher Weise natürlich für küstennahe Vorhaben.

Deutschland und die EU müssen mehr konkrete Maßnahmen zum Schutz der Meere ergreifen, doch ohne internationale Verträge wird es nicht gehen, da die größten Müllmengen über asiatische und afrikanische Flüsse ins Meer gelangen.
