(Phoenix Resurrection)
Red lips and a wish
hanging from them like a fishing pole
tossed out towards the reflection of the sea in the sky.
Fresh blooming summer grass eyes broadcast
seeds of the future out towards the curve of the earth
as it turns, as its wind brushes through her sunset red hair
and calls her backwards, asks that she remember
Pearls of sweat
dribbling down her forehead as her breath taunts her
with her life, with her living, like a promise,
an obligation, a denied potential that flashes like a moment
frozen
behind her eyelids each night, her skin suffocating her with its weight
as she tells her husband he must die
again, must stay dead
(unlike her)
and worse, he understands
and worse, he loves her for it,
and worse, he withers in her arms
a discarded husk of corn;
the kernels turn to ash
before her eyes and crumple
to the ground.
Most of all, she recalls cupping the fire
in her bare hands
and saying no.
Worst of all, she can’t regret it
the real nightmare
is when in dreams
she changes her mind —
and she says yes
But she always wakes
and comes to realize
that yes, she is alive
and yes, she did deny
the force that asked her why.
She is alive
and the world is different, now
but she’s been here before
and despite it all
she is grateful.
Grateful,
for the leather-plastic of manicured turf grass beneath her bare toes curling
In the warmth of the yellow dawning
of yet another day, another surprise
that she is alive, that she can feel
the brush of her green skirt across her knees...
and the distant flame of the sun
echoing what she turned away.
