A day. That’s the only way you could truly describe how your shift had gone, it had been a day. It hadn’t even been overly bad yet here you were, tears stinging your eyes and blurring your vision as you fumbled with your keys to try and unlock the front door when it swings open before you find the right key, revealing Bob on the other side. You look up at his smiling face and let out an involuntary whimper and a wet sigh that borders on a sob, feeling a fuzziness start to take over the edges of your mind as you lurch forward into his arms, “Bobby…” you whine while burying your face into his neck, the tears finally spilling over with a broken sob. He startles for a split second before firmly wrapping his arms around you and pulling you inside, kicking the door shut with his heel as he gently shushes you and rubs your back in soothing circles.
He leads you over to the couch and sits you down where Natasha is watching you in concern, scooting over to allow Bob the space to sandwich you between them as she presses up against your back, feeling your sobs course through your body. She hums quietly before she brings her hand up to your hair and lightly scratches her short nails across your scalp, “oh baby girl,” she lets out with a sympathetic sigh, “it’s ok, we’re here.” She whispers to you in a soft tone and you feel yourself quickly slipping, the stress of the day catching up to you as you melt into their soft touches and words. You slightly remove your face from Bob’s shoulder to press your head into Natasha’s touch with a broken whine, the two of them holding you and letting you cry between them in their arms.
Bob pulls one of his hands out from between you and Natasha once your sobs settle out into sniffles and hiccups, cupping your jaw and guiding your face up to look at him as he swipes his thumb across your cheek to wipe the tears away, “do you wanna talk about it, baby girl?” You shake your head, not knowing how to put it into words, at least not right now, “jus’ want you an’ mommy, ‘m tired”, you whimper out, your voice rough from crying, and lean into his hand as his face softens in understanding. “That’s ok honeybee, whenever you’re ready. We’ve got you, we’re here. Do you want to watch a movie? Or do you just wanna cuddle with me and mommy?” You don’t respond at first, just letting yourself feel their touches and slip further down before looking back up at Bob, “wanna watch a movie” you eventually decide, “can we have snacks?” Your glassy eyes and quiet voice cause a soft smile to break out on his face before he leans in to press a kiss to your nose, “of course we can honeybee.”
You feel Natasha shift behind you, wrapping her arms around you and pulling you firmly against her chest in a tight hug. Your eyes slip closed as her warm breath puffs against your scalp before she places a gentle kiss to the crown of your head before she pulls away, shushing you and wrapping the throw blanket from the back of the couch around you when you whine at the loss and sudden cold against your back, “just a minute little one, I’m just grabbing a few things for us. Just stay right here and cuddle with daddy and I’ll be right back”. With one last kiss to your head she disappears towards the kitchen as you burrow into Bob’s chest, wrapping the blanket tighter around yourself and eagerly sucking and nibbling on his fingers when he offers them, still sniffling and hiccuping softly with the occasional stray tear escaping your eyes. He hums a random lullaby to you softly, the vibrations spreading through his chest soothing you further, breathing out a soft, shuddering sigh through your nose as you let yourself relax into his hold.
A few minutes go by before Natasha returns, barely juggling a bowl of popcorn as well as some cut up fruit, always insisting on making sure you had balanced snacks, along with a couple juice boxes and water bottles. You let out a quiet giggle around Bob’s fingers as she unceremoniously dumped them onto the coffee table in front of the couch. She looks at you in adoration when you giggle, as if she’s hearing the heavens sing, before plopping back onto the couch next to you and pressing herself up against you where you’ve settled yourself in Bob’s lap while she was gone with your head tucked under his chin. She readjusts you a bit so your legs are draped across her thighs, bringing the three of you as close together as possible. One of her hands grabs yours and squeezes gently as she brushes your hair out of your face. Your eyes are half closed, the stress of the day melting away as exhaustion takes over while Natasha picks a movie for you. It’s something lighthearted that you’ve all seen enough times to quote so you don't have to focus on it. She reaches across your legs and grabs the bowl of popcorn and sets it in your lap, picking up the fruit next and coaxing Bob’s fingers out of your mouth as you pout before she holds a piece out to you and pops it into your mouth, “there we go baby girl, doing so good for us, our perfect little honeybee.”
The three of you continue sitting there, your head tucked under Bob’s chin with his arms wrapped around you and gently rocking as the movie plays quietly on the screen, Natasha gently rubbing your legs while feeding you pieces of popcorn and fruit and giving you sips of your juice box. She occasionally hums along to whatever song is playing in the movie, both of them never stopping their whispers of sweet nothings and praises. You barely register when the credits start rolling, completely melted into their touches and soft words and regressed with your face buried into Bob’s stomach, having slowly shifted down over the course of the movie. You’re gently chewing on the edge of his shirt and getting it wet but he couldn’t care less. His hand is resting in your hair, running his fingers through it and occasionally working out any small tangles he happens to snag while Natasha’s hand rubs soothing circles against the skin of your hip with her thumb where your shirt rode up. She looks over at Bob, nudging her shoulder against his to get his attention and nodding her head in the direction of the stairs. A silent way of telling him it was time for bed before she leans down to talk to you softly, “baby girl, c’mon, let’s get up and go to bed. Do you want me or daddy to carry you or do you wanna walk by yourself?”
You just let out a whine in response, burying your face further into Bob’s stomach as he lets out a soft chuckle, “I know you’re comfy baby girl but you’ll be more comfy in bed, you can even wear one of my sweatshirts to sleep tonight instead of your own pajamas, how does that sound? I know how much you love the one that I’ve still got from the academy and it’s nice and clean.” He waits for you to respond, pulling his hand out of your hair as you wiggle around to sit up slightly, the edge of his shirt dropping from your mouth in the process and watching as you blink a few times, gathering your slow thoughts and nodding in agreement, “ok daddy, c’n mommy carry me to bed?” A soft smile stretches across her face, her eyes filled with love for you as you look at her with hopeful, glassy eyes and she tucks your messy hair behind your ear before she leans down to press a kiss to your forehead, “of course I can honeybee, anytime you want.”
She untangles herself from the blankets and out from under your legs so she can sit you upright, promptly scooping you up and propping you on her hip as she stands. You shiver at the cold from the loss of the blanket and your Bobby’s warmth and she lets out a sympathetic coo, “Bobby wrap their blanket around them will you? Can’t have our little one getting cold while we go upstairs now can we?” She gently sways as Bob stands up, wrapping the blanket around your shoulders and kissing your cheek, “I’ll be right up baby girl, I’m just gonna clean up while mommy gets you all ready for bed, ok?” His soft words float through your head as you sleepily nod, your head already resting against Natasha’s shoulder with your eyes closed as she turns and carries you up the stairs.
You open your eyes as she sets you down on a hard surface and you frown as you register that you’re not in bed but on the bathroom counter in the en suite, seeing Natasha already grabbing your toothbrush and toothpaste, involuntarily letting out a quiet whine from high in the back of your throat in slight protest.
She lets out a soft sigh, “I know darling, but you’ve gotta brush your teeth, I can help you tonight ok? And you can keep your blankie nice and warm around your shoulders.” Her voice a gentle tone but holding no room for argument, you let her rest her hand on your cheek and brush your teeth for you. Knowing that if she takes too long you’ll start to protest, she finishes up quickly. It’s not the most thorough job by her standards but it’s enough for tonight. She hands you a cup of water and instructs you to rinse your mouth as she brushes your hair and begins to braid it for the night, never ending the stream of praise and sweet nothings that drift past her lips through the entire process, “There’s my good girl, so good for me and daddy, I’m almost done and then we can go get you all comfy in bed ok?” She ties off the end of your hair and scoops you up back into her arms to carry you back into the bedroom.
Bob is waiting for you when you walk back through the door, he’s slipped his academy sweatshirt on for a few minutes to make sure it’s nice and warm and smells more like him. He watches Natasha set you gently on the bed and get you changed into a pair of sleep shorts. He quickly removes his sweatshirt and slips the soft material over your head and helps you guide your arms through the sleeves when she takes your shirt off, making sure you don’t get cold. You gently flap the ends of the too long sleeves around over your hands with a soft, happy squeal, bringing the tattered edge of the sleeve up to your mouth and softly chewing on it. Bob and Natasha watching you with matching smiles, looking at you like you’re the most perfect thing in the world and to them you are. Bob pulls the covers back and lays down, guiding you up to lie next to him, “c’mon baby girl, there we go, we’ve got you.” He wraps his arm around you, tucking you against him as you lay your head on his chest. You look up at him with sleepy eyes, shining at him like he hung the moon and he feels his heart melt as he brings his other hand up to brush against your cheek. Natasha climbs into bed behind you, pressing herself against your other side and placing a soft kiss to your shoulder, “love you so much honeybee, always so perfect for us.” Somewhere far in the back of your mind is the faint thought that they’ll want you to talk about your day sometime tomorrow, but that doesn’t matter. Not when you’re safe and relaxed in their arms, their scent surrounding you and lulling you further towards sleep along with their gentle touches, humming as you press your cheek further against Bob’s chest.
“L’ve you and daddy, momma. ‘M sleepy”
“Go to sleep little one, we’ll be right here when you wake up and we’ll do whatever you wanna do tomorrow”, Bob shushes you for one final time. He feels your breathing even out against his side, soft puffs of your breath ghosting across his collarbone as you let yourself fall asleep finally. You drift off knowing he’s telling the truth, exhaustion settled deep in your bones from the day, but feeling beyond safe. Beyond loved and cared for, right here in their arms. Their perfect baby girl that they’d do anything for, as long as it meant you were happy.

Bradley’s POV
Austin and Phoenix came in through the front door with bags of groceries. Leia was in the backyard running around with Gunner. Hangman and I were sitting on the couch with the boys. Hangman was hunched over Little Bradley on the couch while he was laying in his lap. He was playing peek-a-boo with him. Even though baby boy had no idea what was going on. I’m pretty sure his eyes were closed 98% of the time Bagman was playing with him.
“Sup guys,” Austin called over and nodded his head at Hangman and me as he placed some grocery bags onto the counter.
I nodded and waved back over to him. “What’s up, Aus. Phoenix my girl, my favorite wing-woman. Thank you for doing y/n and I a solid this morning and cleaning up for us.” She came over and grabbed my hand and placed a kiss on my knuckles.
“Anything for y/n and the boys, Bradshaw.” She winked and leaned over the couch to look at Luke passed out on my lap. She cooed over him. “Oooooh look at the little man sleep. Is that Luke or Bradley?”
I chuckled. “Luke.”
Hangman interjected. “Bradley boy has a new and cool gift from his mama and daddy.” He picked up little Bradley and handed him off to Phoenix.
“Huh.” Phoenix raised her brows and nodded. “What is your new and cool gift Bradley boy?” She said in a baby voice as she grabbed him and covered his chubby cheeks in kisses.
“Hazel. Eyes.” Hangman smiled and looked back at Phoenix.
Phoenix raised her brow and readjusted Brad against her chest. She looked over at me and was looking for approval. “Hazel eyes??”
I nodded. “He’s got some dreamy hazel eyes. The perfect combination of mine and y/n’s eyes.”
Her eyes went wide as she carefully held baby Brad in her hands. Austin joined and looked at him in Phoenix’s hands. He opened his eyes and his eyes were glistening at them both. They were mesmerized by his piercing hazel eyes.
“Oh, man. Look at those.” Austin chuckled and rubbed his index knuckle against Brad’s cheek. “Those are beautiful.”
“There is a new secret weapon in town and it is this little man.” Phoenix was smiling at baby Brad in her hands. “Look out world. Luke and Bradley are going to steal your girls.”
I laughed and shook my head. “He is the only one with Hazel eyes. Luke has green eyes like Leia and me.”
Austin and Phoenix both looked at me shocked. “So then you’re gonna be able to tell them apart forever?” Austin chuckled.
“And you won’t have to like call the hospital and beg one day for their original fingerprints to try and tell them apart when they’re 13 because you are having second thoughts about possibly mixing them up when they were 6 months old?” She raised her brows.
I started to laugh. “God, that would have been a fun and great story one day if that were the case. But, we, unfortunately.” I rolled my eyes. “Won’t get the chance to mix them up because they have that difference.”
Hangman shrugged his shoulders. “I still think we are going to mix you, Leia, Little B, and Luke up because you are all carbon copies.”
I rolled my eyes and stood up as I brought Luke to my chest. “On that note.” I handed a sleeping Luke to Austin. “Would you all watch my kids for a second? Leia is out back with Gunner playing. I need to go check on my wife. Make sure she’s okay.”
Austin and Phoenix took a seat on the couch with the boys and Hangman headed out back with Leia and Gunner.
I ran up the stairs and opened the door quietly to see the bed fixed and empty.
“Sweetheart? You in the bathroom?” I entered the room and closed the door behind me.
You came out from the closet with your hair wrapped up in a towel and one of my shirts on. “God, I haven’t fit into one of your shirts like this since before I was pregnant with the boys.” You giggled and came over to me and placed a kiss on my lips.
I smiled and wrapped my arms around you. “Sleep good, baby?”
You nodded and smiled up at me. “I did. Thank you so much, Bradley. I really needed that.”
I kissed you again and rubbed your back. “Anything for you, sweetheart. I knew you needed some rest. You did so much last night and these last 9 almost 10 months. I owed it to you.”
You hummed and laid on my chest. “Where are the kiddos?”
I laid my head on top of yours and embraced you tightly. “They are all downstairs. Being taken good care of.” You nodded and looked up at me.
“I’m going to finish getting ready. I’ll meet you downstairs in 20. We have our big news to share with the three adults downstairs.” You raised your brows and turned around to continue to get ready.
“Oooo. You are right. The godparents.” I smiled and placed one more kiss on your cheek as I gripped your hips. “See you downstairs in a bit, mama.”
———-
I rejoined the future godparents and the kids downstairs. Leia had just come back in from the backyard with Gunner. Hangman was washing her hands in the kitchen. Gunner was wedged in between Austin and Phoenix trying to smell the boys.
I sat in one of the single sofas across from the couch and watched Phoenix, Hangman’s, and Austin’s interactions with the kids. I smiled seeing how much they cared for them. I knew you and I were making a great choice in choosing them to be there for our kids for the rest of their lives. I looked down and started to think about when we would go back to San Diego and everyone else would get to meet the boys and see Leia again. Man… I couldn’t wait. You and I were the luckiest people in the world to have everyone we had in our lives.
Hangman made his way over with Leia. He sat next to Austin on the couch with Leia in his lap. She leaned over carefully as she watched her little brothers sleep. She softly started to rub Luke’s head.
You finally made your way down and greeted everyone.
“Hey Good afternoon, Mrs. Bradshaw!” Hangman laughed and he grabbed your hand.
You made your way over and kissed all three kids on their heads.
“Hey, mama. How did you sleep?” Phoenix reached her hand out for yours and interlocked your fingers with hers.
You smiled and let out a relaxing sigh. “I slept great. Thank you all so much for taking care of the kiddos to let me sleep in a little bit.”
Austin grabbed your other hand and placed a little kiss on it. “Anything for the hardworking mama!”
You giggled and looked over at me. I gestured for you to come and sit on my lap. You made your way over and sat with me. I wrapped my arms around your waist and you cleared your throat.
“Sooooo.” You smiled at all of them before looking at me.
They all looked at each other confused.
I peeked my head around your body and smiled. “We have a surprise for you all.”
They all furrowed their brows at you and me. Leia popped up from Jake’s lap startling Gunner. “Are we having more babies!?”
Austin, Phoenix, and Hangman looked at Leia with wide eyes and then shared the same look with us. You started to laugh and so did I.
“God. Y’all move quickly. Didn’t waste any time.” Hangman pursed his lips together and shook his head at us. He looked disgusted. The whales.
You shook your head and leaned back against me. “Definitely no more babies.”
“For now.” I smiled. You rolled your eyes at me and looked back to the group.
“Bradley and I wanted to ask the three of you.” You looked at Jake and smiled. “And Sarah.” He smiled back at you. “If you would do Bradley and me the honor of being the boy’s godparents.” You bit your lip nervously as you waited for their answers.
They were all stunned and were lost for words.
Phoenix looked down at baby Brad sleeping in her arms. She bit her lip as it quivered. She looked back up at you and me as she wiped her tears. “I would love that more than anything.” She placed kisses on baby boy's cheeks as she held him close.
Austin smiled and was holding back his tears. “Are you serious?”
Hangman was just staring into space in the boy’s direction. You broke down, “I’m dead serious… What do you all think?” I held you close and waited for all of them to reply.
“YES!” Phoenix nodded in excitement as she embraced baby Brad to her chest. Austin smiled at you and me with tearful eyes.
“I would be honored to be a godfather of one of these little guys.” He wiped the inner corner of his eyes.
Hangman was still silent. I looked over at him and leaned forward against your back. “Bagman?” I raised my brow at him and smirked. He looked up at me with his lips pushed together. “What do you say, wingman?”
He opened his mouth slightly about to say something and then looked down. He licked his lips and pushed them back together. Leia patted the top of his head. “Uncle Jakey?”
Hangman looked back up at Leia and smiled. He looked back over at you and me. “I would love to. Thank you.” He bit his lower lip and looked down. “Thank you for this. Seriously.”
I chuckled. “I wouldn’t and they wouldn’t be here without you.” He looked up at me quickly and started to cry slightly. I gave him a reassuring smile. “Thank you, Seresin.”
He smiled at me and looked back over at the boys. You wiped your tears, “So it’s settled. Of course, after you ask Sarah, Jake.”
Hangman smiled back at you and nodded. “I know she would love to. So which lucky man do I get?” He chuckled.
You looked back at me and nodded. I cleared my throat. “Our little Luke.”
Phoenix gasped and placed her hand over her mouth. “Aus, that means we have little Braddie boy.” She poked his nose and hugged him. “But I will and always will be here for both of you boys.”
Austin and Hangman nodded. “I agree.” They both said in unison.
———-
Your POV
It has been a couple of weeks since the boys were born, you and Bradley were starting to adjust to their daily routine. On the days that Bradley was gone for physical therapy, you had Austin to lean on for some help.
~~~~
You came home from your check up appointment with the doctor. Bradley was off today and watched the kids while you were out. When you came home you were thrown off with a surprise. Bradley was carrying both of the boys in his arms with Leia clinging onto his back dancing around the kitchen to I Was Made For Lovin’ You by Kiss.
Him and Leia were singing to the boys as he was dancing around. “I was made for lovin’ you babies! You were made for lovin’ me! And I can’t get enough of you babies!”
You gasped as you put your purse on the counter. “Bradley and Leia Rey Bradshaw.” They both looked at you with wide eyes as they stopped singing mid-sentence and stopped dancing.
“Uh Oh, daddy.” Leia hopped off of Bradley’s back and smiled at you awkwardly. “hi momma.”
You started to laugh as you walked over and kissed her head. “Leia Rey.” You squinted your eyes and walked over to Bradley. He was cradling the boys in his arms and standing completely still. “Bradley Nicolas Bradshaw.” You clicked your tongue against the roof of your mouth, “What do we have here?” You laughed and shook your head as you grabbed Luke from Bradley’s arms.
“Hello, sweetheart.” Bradley already knew you were going to scold him.
“Bradley. You are still recovering and you have all three kids clinging to you.” You kissed Luke on his forehead making him smile.
“Sweetheart.” Bradley cleared his throat, “I am fine. I promise.”
You raised your brows and squinted your eyes at him. “I know you are, but I need you to be extra careful. Especially if you want to fly again, babe.”
Bradley smiled and chuckled. “Baby. That is why we are dancing.”
You raised one brow and look up at him as you placed another kiss on Luke’s head. Leia came over and wrapped her arms around you. “Momma. Daddy got cleared to fly.” She said in a little whisper.
You gasped and held Luke’s head to your chest as you covered his ear. “BRADLEY!” Your mouth was in a wide smile and you started to bounce up and down. “REALLY!?”
He started to laugh as he nodded his head. “OH MY GOD. OH MY GOD. OH MY GOD!”
You bit your lip and smiled at him. “YESSSS!”
He shook his head as he was laughing. He grabbed Luke from your grasp and cradled him next to baby Bradley. “I start ground training tomorrow. Gonna start going through the exercises to get me ready for flying again.”
You put your hands over your mouth, “YES FINALLY!” You jumped around with Leia, “well crank up the music! We are celebrating again!”
————-
Bradley’s POV
It was my first official day back at work. I woke up at 0400, so that I could feed the boys and then get ready. They were both fast asleep. I went to the mini fridge in the corner of the room that we had set up. I grabbed two bottles of your milk and placed them in the mini micro above the fridge to nuke it. As they warmed up I grabbed little Brad from his bassinet. I bounced him in my arms gave him kisses. I laid him on my empty side of the bed as I went and grabbed Luke from his bassinet. After I laid them down together, I went and grabbed the bottles. I checked the temperature for both before placing them into their mouths.
I got on my knees on the floor by the edge of the bed as I held both bottles to the boys’ mouths. “You boys are getting so big. It’s ridiculous. Please stop growing. Daddy wants you boys to stay babies forever.” I let out a little chuckle, “Before I know it, you boys are gonna wanna go flying with Papa Mav. Just like your big sister Leia.”
I watched them with tears in my eyes as they finished their bottles. I picked them both up and placed them on my chest as I sat against the headboard of the bed. I began to burp them, burping was an understatement. They both belch like grown men. After their burping, I changed their diapers and placed them back into their bassinets. I kissed each of them as they fell back to sleep.
“Daddy loves you so much, boys.”
I started to get ready for work.
~~~~
After cleaning up, I put on my whites and opted for the short sleeve shirt. I grabbed my hat and held it between my arm and waist. I went and placed a kiss on your head. “I’m leaving now, baby. I’ll see you tonight. I love you.”
You opened your eyes and smiled. “I’ll miss you, Brad. Have a good day and be safe please. I love you so much.” You reached your arms up and gave me a hug.
“The boys are fed and changed. So get some sleep, babe.” I moved your hair from your face and gave you another kiss. “Bye, baby. I love you.”
You waved bye to me as I left the room. I went and gave our sleeping Leia a kiss. Then met with Phoenix and Hangman downstairs.
“Well, well, well. What do we have here?” Hangman had a smirk on his face while he sipped his coffee. “Looking good, Rooster.” He held his mug up to me and winked.
“Seresin. Good morning.” I chuckled as Phoenix handed me a mug.
“Are you ready for today, Bradshaw?” She smiled as she sipped her coffee.
I sighed and sipped my coffee, “More than ready. I’ve been waiting for this moment for nearly 6 months. I hope I can get back in the pit before we are sent back to San Diego.”
Hangman nodded his head. “Well, you have plenty of time to get into the pit. I have confidence you’ll get in there, but if you can’t, you always have more time in San Diego. Take your time and don’t rush it. Take it day by day, Rooster. We are all here for you.”
“Thanks you guys. I definitely will get a feel for it today. See how it goes from here. But today is day one.”
They both patted me on the back and we all put our mugs away. “Well then, let’s go and start day one.”
————-
Your POV
It was your first full day of watching the boys and Leia solo without Bradley. Thankfully you had Austin who was helping occasionally, but you ultimately wanted to try on your own. It went smoothly, a couple of blowouts from Luke, but nothing out of the normal. You looked over at the clock and it was 4:30.
Austin was making dinner with Leia, as you laid the boys down for their nap. “They should all be home soon, huh darlin?” Austin asked as he munched on a carrot.
You nodded and wrapped your arms around Leia. “Yup! Give them another 30 and they’ll be here.” You laid on Leia’s shoulder. “Thank you for helping with your brothers today, babe. You helped mommy so much.” You kissed her cheek over and over again as she stirred dinner and giggled.
“You’re welcome momma. I love helping with my brothers!”
Austin patted her head and smiled at you. “Best sister ever.” You and him laughed as they continued dinner.
~~~~
Bradley, Phoenix, and Jake finally made it home. They all came in laughing. Austin went over to greet them as you and Leia finished setting the table. You could hear Austin shushing everyone as they came into the dinning area. The boys were still asleep for their nap.
“Where are my boys?” Bradley whispered as he came over and gave you and Leia a kiss on the head.
“They’re asleep in their bassinets.” You looked over in their direction. Their bassinets were set up by the couches.
Bradley went and washed his hands before he made his way over to the boys. Phoenix and Jake followed behind. They all went to give the boys kisses as they slept. Phoenix and Jake came over to the table to start eating with Leia and Austin.
You walked over to Bradley and laid your head against his shoulder. “Look at ‘‘em sleep, Brad.”
You smiled as you caressed baby Brad's cheek.
“They’re perfect. Just like you and Leia Rey.” He gave both of them kisses before he turned to you and smiled. “Thank you for this life baby. I wouldn’t be here without you.”
You smiled and he held your face in his hands. “Thank you for coming back and loving me like we never parted. I love you, always.”
Hcs for being Natasha “Phoenix’s” sister from top gun?
Being Phoenix's Sister Headcannons
Tumblr media
She's five years older than you but holds that over you from time to time
You met Bradley and Jake after her Top Gun class graduation
Bradley treats you as his own little sister
And Hangman annoys you to no end, to which you annoy him right back
You've also got a flying license, you're just not a naval aviator
Nat and Bradley taught you how to fly an F-14 in sligjt combat, that was a week after their top gun grad.
Under no circumstances does Phe let you use the stove or the oven. She barely let's you use the microwave without her watch when she's state side
^Which is fair, considering the amount of fires you've had to extinguish
You live off a bunch if vending machine food at the top gun base
And that's how you met your sister's CO, Pete Mitchell, for the special detachment her, Bradly and jackass (aka Jake) were called back for. He caught you kicking the vending machine since it stopped half way through, not dropping the bag of chips you paid for.
To which you guys had a pretty good conversation together, forgetting to mention you're not an actual aviator.
He didn't learn about who you are until after the suicide mission. He saw you and Nat huh each other tightly after everyone got back state side, on the beach. Everyone was relaxing on the beach after the huge excitement that had happened.
Nat introduced you to him as her little sister, and you chuckled as his mouth gaped in surprise.
Everyone watches as you throw one of the footballs they brought at Hangman after him insulting your sister.
^Bradley giving you a fistbump and Nat sighs while trying to hide her smile.
You, Nat and Halo have a big sleepover movie night, just the three of you girls. Halo taking a liking to you, seeing a lot of Nat in you.
You 'borrow' a bunch of Nat's navy sweaters and wear them around the base and the Hard Deck, seeing how many people will belive that you're in the Navy.
You and Penny become good friends at the bar
^you learn some (a lot of) dirt on Maverick from her
Bradley explains to you about his relationship with Maverick and you may or may not have smacked him upside the head about how he cut connection with the man
^to which he agreed he deserved
The whole dagger squad now treat you as their baby sister and you can't go anywhere without 'protection' aka one of them.
You love your big sister to death, when you were younger you wanted to be just like her. Strong, loyal, pretty and much more.
Amelia and you become good friends, you like a mentor to her and teaching her about different flight maneuvers with model planes, everything you learnt from Nat and Bradley...and maybe....maybe Jake.
꧁ head cannons ꧂
You were probably found when you were still an infant, so you have no memory of your life before the crew
They probably say something like you magically appeared in a barrel or one of thatch’s botched recipes spurred you into existence if you ever go around asking questions about it
They want to keep you happy so you don’t doubt your familial bonds
But of course, watching one of your brothers kill your other brother over a weird-looking fruit probably put a damper on that :)
Marco remembers the freezing wind of that faithful day, the ocean breeze picking up shards of ice as a seemingly normal ration run with his friend turned into meeting the youngest member of their crew.
A loud bang shook Marco out of the memory as his head swirled to the door. The familiar childish screams and laughs at least hinted that the noise wasn’t causing pain; he couldn’t help but smile.
It’s been five years since that winter storm, and although the phoenix hated the cold more than anything, he couldn’t help but be glad for that storm.
Thatch stumbled on a hidden branch covered in snow. Marco grabbed his arm before glaring at the other man
“We had to come during the middle of winter-yoi?” He snarked for the umpteenth time since the two got caught in the storm. Thatch huffed and rolled his eyes “bug off bird brains; they’ve got the best beef in the west blue!” He snapped. The two came upon a rushing river, and thatch groaned, nodding towards the rubble of a bridge that once stood
“Seems the ice and rapids took out the bridge, be a dear big bird and Carry me over?” Thatch slid a sly smile to Marco, who rolled his eyes “you always boast about your ability to swim yoi-“ the rattle of wood cut off Marco's comment, and the two commanders glanced over at the bridge, noting a small box that was caught on some rubble, the two watched as the box shook against the tide leering to the side causing the freezing water to slip into the box. The cold caused the young occupant in the box to let out a blood-curdling scream causing both of the men to tense.
“It's open,” Marco responded to the gentle taps on his door. It opened with a protesting squeak, and the young child peeped their head around the corner
“Big brother! Ace is being mean to me-” the child pouted, causing the old doctor to chuckle “(Y/N), what did you do now yoi?”
“Did nothin'! Promise!” they huffed, sending a glare toward the doctor “it's all Teaches fault! He told me lunch was ready and to go wake up ace!” Marco hummed, resting his chin on his hand, “and, let me guess, you decided to wake him up by tickling him, yoi ?” he couldn't help but smile at the way they puff out their cheeks while muttering a small ‘maybe.’
Marco got up from his seat and gently ruffled the youngster's hair “come on, let's go see if thatch can whip up some food to help soothe ace yoi,” he said with a smile, gently pushing the younger out the door
“Okay!” they called out and started running down the hall, leaving the old man behind to wallow in his sentimental ways with a smile.
After first getting brought onto the ship you know damn well these men didn't know how to care for a baby-
I can just imagine them trying to feed you by offering you a giant turkey leg 💀
Since Marco stayed on the ship most of the time, he was your number-one babysitter. It would have been pops, but he was so nervous that he’d hurt you cause you're so small :(
If Marco couldn't, then thatch would be the second-best person; he’d keep you in the kitchen so you didn't get into too much trouble
Thatch and Marco were there for most of your significant milestones, and we’re always quick to share it with the rest of the crew
Thatch stared down at the carnage that graced his kitchen. Plates were broken and strewn on the floor; his delicate fresh vegetables smushed and drooled on. He turned to the rather cute culprit. Who was asleep on the tile floor, red hands from smoothing the tomatoes, holding an eggplant as a pillow.
Thatch pinched the bridge of his nose, suppressing a scream. He looked back at the sleeping toddler and gently picked them up, stirring them from their slumber “so- what do you have to say for yourself?” He grumbled.
The baby in his arms just smiled and lazily babbled at him, mouth full of baby teeth and eyes sparkling with more stars than the night sky; really, how could he stay mad at this adorable creature? The cook smiled at the child’s nonsense, and the baby reached up for him, dirty hands smearing tomato juice all over his white collar, and he rolled his eyes
“Alright, alright, you little demon, let’s get you cleaned up before you make even more of a mess- of course, you start crawling when I’m not looking-“ the chief mumbled and headed for the bathroom. He ran the warm water and gently placed the toddler down in the water, making sure he cleaned off any remaining mess from their skin.
Ace was a different story.
Im not saying fuck canon time line… but-
The ex-captain of the spade pirates infamously wanted nothing to do with the white-beard crew.
Despite his multiple murder attempts- the youngest member of white beards crew always seemed to follow him around like a little duckling
Did it remind him of his little brothers? Yes. Was he going to admit that you were adorable and could do no wrong in his eyes? …maybe-
Look all I’m saying is-
Ace: *sees a small child* big brother mode A C T I V A T E D.
Ace sat against the railing of the Moby-Dick, twiddling his knife in his hands as he thought of his latest ploy against White-beard. He could feel eyes burning into his side, which he pointedly ignored.
The boy let out a sigh; that brat sure was relentless- he hesitantly raised his eye, meeting the gazes of the crew's youngest member. They let out a soft squeak before ducking behind the corner they used for cover. Ace narrowed his eyes as he huffed out his nose, sliding his knife back into his carrier
“Leave me alone, brat,” he muttered, but the startled gasp was enough that he knew his message got across, the child hesitantly stepped out from behind the corner, and a pang of guilt stabbed through ace’s chest- the kid couldn't have been older than 10. He watched as they seemed to look for their words
“Um… big brother… Marco wanted me to make sure you were, um… you were okay…” they hesitated, looking over aces face and waiting for a reply.
Ace couldn’t help but scrunch his nose in irritation “im not your big brother.” he stated, pointedly rising from his sitting position and starting to walk away. The young pirate gasped and quickly followed after him “b-but gramps said you joined the family-” the child worried their lip between their teeth, recalling macros words
“Be patient,” Marco hummed as (y/n) excitedly swung their legs in their chair, “but I wanna meet my new brother!” they almost whined, pulling a chuckle from the doctor. “In time, Ace is... Let's say having a hard time adjusting to the family.” Marco turned and ruffled his younger siblings' hair. “Think of him like a cat; he isn't comfortable yet; he might bare some claws, yoi.”
(y/n) pushed their bottom lip into a pout, “but he’s my brother- brothers don't hurt each other!” Marco gave them a weary smile “all im saying is just be slow.”
Ace’s scoff of disdain pulled them from their memory, and they stopped, almost slamming right into his leg “im not a part of your stupid family!” he yelled, taking the younger pirate aback
In all the trouble (y/n) had gotten into, they had never heard anyone yell at them with such anger. They bit their lip roughly, holding back the welling emotions as their eyes pricked with tears. They looked down and Ace was taken aback, regretting his tone, not his words.
When (Y/n) looked back up, big fat tears were rolling down their cheeks as they suppressed a sob “y- you just aren’t comfortable yet-“ they wept, using their first to wipe away the futile tears and snot “t-that’s why your claws are out.” They quickly turned away from ace and ran before he could even mutter an apology. Ace tsked and promptly turned away. Guilt was eating him up from the inside.
“We have a plane, Bradley? How? When?” You were at a loss for words. “A fucking plane?”
Bradley laughed, “Yes baby, a plane.”
He started to push you to it. He took the keys from your hand and pushed a button. Bradley went up to the plane and disengaged the door. He slowly walked it down with his hands. It was fully extended and the inside of the plane was lit up. He looked over to you and put his hand out. “After you, Fiancée.”
You placed your hand in his and he guided you up the stairs. You looked back before you entered. You looked at the squad, Mav, and Penny. You smiled as they waved to you. You waved back and blew a kiss at them. Fanboy acted like he caught it and held it to his chest. You giggled. Bradley started to make his way up the stairs. He turned and waved to everyone.
“Use protection this time, Bradshaw!” Hangman yelled out to both of you. He started to laugh loudly.
Bradley shook his head and chuckled. He put his hand on your lower back and pushed you into the plane. He retracted the steps back and locked the door into place. You looked around as he did one more check. You walked through the plane and it was so beautiful. You traced your hands over the big white leather seats, everything was so simple and sleek. The floor was black hardwood, and there was a strip of it leading to the back where the private restroom was. This thing was luxurious. There was no way it belonged to you and Bradley. You turned around to him as he flipped some switches. You went behind him as he sat in one of the pilot’s seats.
“This thing is beautiful, Bradley. But, how? Is it really ours?” You rested your arms on the headrest of the seat Bradley was sitting in and rested your head on your arms.
He was so focused in the cockpit. He was flipping switches, pushing buttons, adjusting things. “Yes, baby. This is really ours.” He chuckled and turned to you. He stood up and kissed your nose. He walked through the plane and pushed the tables back into the walls, went to close the bathroom doors and locked them, and made sure all the stowaways were locked and closed. He made his way back to the Pilot’s seat and flipped more switches. He set some coordinates on the screen above him.
“Here sweetheart, sit here next to me and put these on.” He pointed to the second Pilot’s seat and handed you a headset.
You grabbed the headset and sat down. “Bradley, where is the pilot…?”
He stopped his hand before he flipped a switch. He was frozen. He turned his head slowly to you and smiled, “I am the pilot, love.” He chuckled and flipped the switch. The left engine started up. He snapped his headset on and flipped the switch for the right engine to start up.
“Ready for Taxi.” He said into the mic and you heard it on your end.
You took off one of the headphones from your ear and tapped Bradley’s arm. He looked over at you and smiled. He took off a headphone and leaned toward you. He covered the mic, “Yes, baby?”
You covered your mic too and took at him nervously, “You’re flying the plane?”
He laughed and nodded. He leaned forward and planted a kiss on your lips, “That I am, baby.”
You shook your head, “No but you fly fighter jets. This is not a fighter jet. This, Bradley. This is a commercial jet.”
He pressed his lips into a line and nodded at you, “I am aware, sweetheart. I can fly this plane. Flying is flying.” He put his hand on your arm, “No flips or crazy maneuvers. Just flying, baby girl.” He smiled reassuringly at you.
You nodded slowly and placed your headphone back on. You sat slowly back into your seat and strapped your seatbelt super tight. You took a deep breath and listened to the radio traffic between Bradley, Hangman, and someone you didn’t recognize the voice of.
“Taxi car clear, the runway is yours, Bradshaw,” Hangman called over the radio.
“Big 10-4, Hangie. The runway is a go.” Bradley readied up the plane.
“Clear for take-off, Roo. Just finished up the outside check.” Hangman called.
You could feel it stirring around as the engines kicked up. You closed your eyes and took a deep breath. You tightened your grasp around the arms rests. You felt a squeeze on your leg and you opened your eyes. You saw Bradley’s hand on your knee. You looked up at him and he nodded, “I love you, honey. You’re gonna love where we are going.”
You smiled nervously at him and nodded. You placed your hand on his, “I love you too, bird boy.”
He brought his hand back to the throttle, he eased it forward and the plane started to take off.
“See you in a couple of days guys,” Bradley called over the radio.
“Fly safe, bird brain. Take care. Love you, Rooster.” Hangman called back.
Bradley smiled as he pulled on the yoke and the plane started to leave the runway and started to ascend into the night sky. Bradley changed the frequency of the radio and was in contact with another person. They were exchanging traffic and directions with each other. You got lost in all the pilot talk. You looked out the windows and watched as the lights below you from the houses got smaller and smaller. As you reached maximum altitude you were looking at the moon and stars. It was beautiful, breathtaking. Everything was so clear. You looked over at Bradley, he hit the autopilot and looked over at you. He removed his headset and signaled for you to take yours off. You removed your headset and shifted in your chair to look over at him.
“Wasn’t bad, right? No flips or tricks.” He reached his hand out for yours.
You grabbed his hand and he stroked your knuckles with his thumb. “This is definitely not what I expected to come home to.” You looked up and smiled at him. “This is so crazy!” You giggled.
He pulled your hand to him, “Come here, baby.” He patted his lap with his other hand. “It’ll be okay I promise, I just want you close to me.”
You unbuckled your seatbelt and made your way over to Bradley. You sat on his lap and he cradled you in his arms. He wrapped his arms around your waist and pulled you into him. You wrapped your arms around his neck. Bradley placed wet kisses against your jawline. He nuzzled his nose into the crook of your neck, “Are you a part of the mile-high club yet, sweetheart?” His voice was huskier than usual.
You sat up in shock and looked at him, “Am I what?”
He chuckled and licked his lips, “Have you ever had sex in a plane?”
You laughed, “Bradley, the last time I had sex was when Leia was conceived.”
His eyes shot open, “Wait, really?” He adjusted himself in the seat. “Are you serious, baby?”
You were appalled, “Excuse me? Have you had sex in a plane, Bradshaw?” You laughed annoyingly.
“Uhh…I” He sat back in the seat and looked up at you and breathed out a single laugh, “I haven’t had sex since Leia either.”
You both looked at each other and raised your brows, “God, I think I just fell in even more in love with you, y/n.” He traced circles into your hip.
“You really haven’t, Bradley? But, you’re like a guy…” you leaned back and looked at him.
“I do have a left and right hand, y/n. How do you think I got these guns? These aren’t from the gym, y’know.” He flexed and laughed.
“You’re sick, Bradshaw.” You pushed his arm down.
“If it makes you feel better, it was always to you, baby. You were all I thought about.” He smirked at you with his puppy dog eyes. He looked down and rubbed your thigh, “My heart belonged and belongs to you, always. I didn’t care for anyone else. It has always been you.”
You placed your hand on his chin and met his eyes, “I love you, Bradley Bradshaw.”
“I love you too, my fiancée.” He continued to rub your thigh and looked deeply into your eyes.
“Where are we going…Fiancé?” You said softly.
He patted your thigh, “That is a surprise for you, babe.” He kissed your cheek.
He gripped your thigh and started to stand up. You got off of his lap and stood. He unbuckled his seatbelt and stood up. He was too tall to stand fully. So he was hunched over while he stretched out his legs. He open the doors to the main cabin and was able to stand up straight. He stretched and opened his arms for you to come into. You looked at the controls and looked back at Bradley, “It is just for a second, sweetheart. Come and give me a hug.” He wiggled his fingers to motion you to come into his arms.
You walked over slowly and buried yourself into his chest. He wrapped his arms around you slowly and squeezed you. You felt like you couldn’t breathe. He finally let go and placed a kiss on the top of your head. You looked up at him and he kissed your forehead. He let out a yawn and wiped his eyes. “Okay, pilot y/n. Take over for a second. I need to go and use the John.” The pointed his thumb over his shoulder to the bathroom in the back. He turned around and started to walk over to the doors.
“Bradley, wait. I don't know how to fly a plane!?” You had your hands up in confusion.
He had his head between the doors. “Baby, it’s on autopilot. Just go sit your beautiful ass up there and look sexy.” He winked at you and closed the doors.
You turned around and looked at the control panel. “What the fuck?”
Then you heard the doors open behind you. You turned around. Bradley peeked his head out again, “Do it naked, that would be fucking hot.” He smiled at you.
“Go and drop your bomb, Lieutenant.” You crossed your arms and looked at him annoyed.
He laughed and disappeared behind the doors again, “You better be naked when I come back! So I can put my cock in your pit!” He yelled through the doors.
You groaned and threw your head back. You plopped yourself into Bradley’s seat and laughed. “Put my cock in your pit…” You laughed a little harder. “Stupid man.” You laughed to yourself.
You looked around at all the controls, there were so many things going on. You were amazed at how skilled Bradley was to be able to know what to press, when to press it, and what it did. You knew you couldn’t remember all of this and the specific steps you had to do to make the plane even start. You straightened out your back and looked out the window. The view was so beautiful. There was no sign of any light below or out in front of your view. You had no idea where you two were going; nonetheless, what direction you were heading. You sat there in silence and enjoyed it. You closed your eyes and took a couple of deep breaths. You felt so relaxed. You thought about the entire day. From the moment you went to go and visit your mom and dad until now. Today was filled with so much. Then here you were on a plane again going god knows where. But it didn’t feel overwhelming. It was nice. You felt a hand on your shoulder. You opened your eyes and looked back.
You turned to see a naked torso, you looked up with wide eyes.
“Bradley Nicolas Bradshaw… where are your clothes?”
You stood up and looked at him, he was butt-ass naked.
“Question is why are you still wearing clothes, sweetheart?” He raised his brows to you.
You looked down and looked at him. He started to tug on your jacket.
“You’re not serious…” You looked at him through squinted eyes.
“Oh, I am as serious as it gets.” He looked at you with sly eyes.
“But you have to fly the plane…” you started to shy away from the naked man in front of you.
“I’m very good at multitasking, sweetheart. Don’t you remember? I am a one-man pilot in my fighter jet. I am trained for this.” His voice was super raspy. “We can check mile-high club off of both our lists.” He winked at you.
Your heart started to race. You could feel yourself blushing while you looked down at the floor. You buried your eyes into your hands and sat back down. You looked up and were face to face with his nether region. You gulped.
“Holy shit.” You looked up at Bradley and he smirked trying to hold back his laughter.
“Up to you, baby. I am also very okay with putting my clothes back on. I just wanted to make you sweat.” He kissed your forehead and started to walk back to the bathroom area.
You watched him walk back to the bathroom. He was about to reach for the handle, “Bradley, wait.” You could almost hear the smile on his face form. He turned his head slightly. You stood up and he turned around slightly. You started to walk to him removing your clothing.
He chuckled, “Dangerous game we are playing, sweetheart.”
You smashed your lips onto him, “You’re a dangerous man in general, Bradshaw.”
He smiled into your kiss and pulled back slightly as he removed your shirt, “That I definitely am.” He threw your shirt over to the side, “Are you ready to create some turbulence?”
You went onto your tiptoes and kissed him hard. He rubbed his hands up and down your sides. You walked him back into one of the chairs. He slammed hard against it. “Holy shit, y/n. Are we really doing this?” You were sitting on his lap and sat up.
You looked at him with wide eyes, “What happened to all that talk? Are you shy now?”
His mouth was open and he looked side to side, avoiding eye contact with you. “I am not shy.”
“Then show me you aren’t shy.” You looked down at him with eyes full of lust.
He grabbed the back of your neck firmly and pushed you down to his lips. His hand grabbed a fist full of your hair as his other hand roamed your body. Your hands went into his hair and tugged slightly. He moaned against your lips. You could feel him hard against your thigh. You felt warmness in your stomach as Bradley deepened the kiss. He patted your back and you looked at him, “To the cockpit, baby. I still need to be a pilot too.”
He gripped your butt and carried you over to the Pilot’s seat. He plopped himself into the seat and roughly grabbed your face and started to kiss you again. Your breath became shallow as the intensity started to build. You were hungrily attacking Bradley with kisses all over his face. You made your way to his neck and kissed it sloppily. He was bucking his hips into you as he continued to flip a couple of switches on the control panel. He put his headset on briefly to listen for any radio traffic. There was nothing. He checked the heading direction and was still on track. He threw the headset onto the other seat.
You started to make your way down his torso until you were met with his big hard length. You gave it a lick and he nearly jumped out of his seat, “Oh my god, baby. You’re not wasting any time.” He inhaled sharply as you licked his pre-cum from the slit of his head. He threw his head back in desire. He grabbed a handful of your hair and tugged at the roots, “Go ahead, baby. Show me what I’ve been missing. I need you.” You gave him a few more teasing licks and kisses before you took him into your mouth. Your saliva was running down this shaft and you used it as lubrication to pump him in your hand. Bradley started to squirm around in his seat, “Oh you look so good with my cock in that pretty mouth, baby.”
He looked down and watched you. You glanced up while you brought him deeper into your mouth. He tensed up when his tip hit the back of your throat. He looked down at you with wide eyes. His pupils were blown. His breath stuttered as he tried to hold himself together. You tightened your grip slightly as you pulled him from your mouth. You started to pump his length In your hand as you took one of his balls into your mouth and sucked on it tenderly. You could hear the squeak as his hand gripped onto the leather arms rests. His eyes rolled back slightly as you worked him near his climax. You moaned against him and it made his stomach tighten. His toes started to curl. He grabbed your head and pulled you up to kiss him, “No I want to keep going. I don’t want to finish just yet, baby.”
He laid back on the chair. He was holding your hips as you climbed on top of him. He lined himself up with your soaking wet slit. He gently pushed you down onto him he groaned at how tight you were. “Holy fuck, y/n. You're fucking tight for me, baby.” He closed his eyes tight as you started to ride him. He bucked his hips up into you as you came down to create more friction, “You don’t have to be so quiet baby. This isn’t church. We are all by ourselves up here.” He slammed himself into you and you let out a moan that could be described as pornographic.
You leaned forward and had your face in Bradley’s neck as you rode him. You moaned his name into his ear, he was hitting new spots. He felt bigger and different this time. Your walls clenched around him tightly as you came. Your hips bucked lazily as you coated his cock. He held you down firmly onto his lap and roughly threw his hips into you. He was breathing heavily into your ear, “God baby. You're taking me so well. Do you love when I fuck you? Is that why you waited for me?” You arched your back in ecstasy. He leaned against your chest. His hands are entangled in your bra as he tried to undo the hooks. “Fuck baby. A little help please.” You wrapped an arm around his neck and the other back to your bra. You unhooked it. He grabbed the middle of your bra with his teeth and ripped it off of you. He took one of your nipples into his mouth and licked and sucked on it gently.
You screamed out with pleasure, “Oh my god, Bradley.” He brought his mouth to the other and teases it between his teeth. You grabbed onto his curls and arched your back as he slammed his hips into you. You rested your other hand on his knee to stable yourself. He stood up slightly and turned you around. He had you bent over the middle console between the pilot’s chairs. He held onto your hips with a death grip as he drove himself into you. “Please go harder, Bradley!” He drove himself into you harder and faster. You were definitely going to be paralyzed. Your moans filled the plane. The windows slightly fogging up.
Bradley checked all the control panels just to make sure everything was still okay. Your legs started to shake from all the pleasure. You felt your climax coming over you again. Bradley held your hair into a ponytail and yanked your head back to him as he slammed into you. “Did you miss me, baby?” You tried to nod but he pulled your hair tighter, “I want to hear you, sweetheart.” He kissed your lips, “Tell me you fucking missed me. Tell me you’re all fucking mine.” You came all over him again, “I-I fuck-k” He tugged at your hair again, and you screamed out with pleasure, “I fucking miss you and the way you fuck me.” He pushed your head into the middle console. You were incoherent. You were drunk off his cock. Your eyes rolled back so far into your head that you could see your brain.
Bradley grabbed your hips and kept himself inside of you while he sat back on the chair. He stuck to the chair because he was so sticky and covered in sweat. Your baby hairs started to curl from the sweat and condensation that was building up. He helped guide you as you rode him backward. “God your ass looks amazing going up and down against me.” He smacked it hard and left his red handprint on you. “Go, hard baby. You’re doing so good.” You moaned out his name as you continued to ride him again, “Fuck Bradley, you feel so good.” You arched your back and held onto his hands. You threw your head forward and hit the control panel.
“HOLY SHIT, Y/N!” Bradley pulled out of you as the plane started to take a nose dive. He yanked on the yoke and steadied the plane again. He re-engaged the autopilot. He sat back and put his hands over his mouth.
You barely were able to hold yourself up. You were slumped against the other chair to help prop your weak knees up. You had your hand over your mouth and your eyes were wide. You were trying to contain your anxiety and laughter.
Bradley started to laugh loudly. “We almost died having sex, babe.” You started to laugh with him, “Holy shit.”
He leaned over to you and moved your curly baby hairs from your face, “Is your head okay? You hit that thing hard, honey.” He checked your forehead. There was a slight cut, but nothing serious. He started to laugh, “Oh my god, baby.”
You turned red from embarrassment. “I can’t believe I just did that.” You laughed even harder.
Bradley kissed your cut, “How is that for a mile-high club story?”
the buggy with a older sister reader was so cute . when i was reading i thought to my self what would buggy's reaction be if he finds out marco has a crush on his sister.
Disclaimer: So Imma be honest here, I'm still getting through One Piece and haven't seen Marco yet but I know who he is because of fanfiction and spending half my time on Tumblr.
Ok now that's out of the way.
So this would happen when Buggy is under age 15 because I imagine once he passes 15 he won't care what his sister gets up to because she's an adult at that point. So let's say he's 12, she's 17, this guy shows up and she's gonna look at him and think his head reminds her of a pineapple. She kind of just shrugs and Marco maybe tries to flirt with her.
Buggy's going to feel extra protective because one, his sister survived nearly dying two years prior. She's got scars now all over her body. And two, her nose is like Buggy's, y'know, and if Buggy had those scars as well as his nose he'd feel self conscious, but his sister doesn't.
And maybe that's why Marco gets a crush. Nothing really bothers her while living on the ship and he likes that in a woman. So he tries flirting, bringing her a snack when she's working, tries to use flowery words to say how beautiful she is, and she just figures he's had too much heat exposure or something because why is he comparing her hair to kelp, it's not the same color at all.
And here's Buggy, anytime they're alone he butts in, wanting to be there if his sister needs help lifting anything or moving boxes because y'know, Buggy is a lot stronger than his sister (he isn't tho) and has beat up suitors before (she hasn't had suitors before, the crush Shanks had on her when he was 11 doesn't count). And she's kind of oblivious to the whole thing while Marco wonders why this kid keeps butting in.
And when Marco finally says something to her, Buggy is right there, he heard this guy say he thinks his sister is beautiful and wonders if they could do some kind of date, and Buggy hates the idea because what if his sister falls in love and decides to leave him behind? And to Buggy's horror, his sister just shrugs and agrees to it. Now he's certain his sister is going to fall in love and leave him behind, which is the last thing he wants.
Except she doesn't. She goes on a date (onboard the ship because she doesn't care to get off the ship when they are at a port (that's a lie she's not allowed off the ship because she keeps rescuing cats and Rayleigh won't let her off the ship unsupervised)). It's fine. She doesn't really care. Marco talks to her and she kind of just eats her food, listening, but how is this different from just sitting with the crew and eating?
And maybe Buggy can't handle it and comes to join them. Marco really would rather he didn't, this is supposed to be a date between the two of them, no little brothers allowed, but you let Buggy sit between the two of you with his own plate and you ask Marco what he wants in life besides piracy, because you love animals and have been spending more time with Crocus learning how to take care of injuries and you wouldn't mind eventually settling down somewhere to help out animals.
But of course you had to make sure Buggy was okay, and you wouldn't be leaving until you knew your little brother would be fine without you. He was your responsibility and future suitors needed to know this. And Buggy looks at this guy, kind of smug, because hearing that assures him that his big sister won't go anywhere any time soon, and that pineapple headed guys have to understand who comes first when Buggy is involved.
something soft and slightly angsty has been on my mind! you know the scene when mav is grilling the squad on why they didn’t survive the test flight? and mav says to natasha, about bob, “don’t tell me, tell his family at the funeral,” and bob looks down at the ground, with his jaw clenched and a sad look in his eyes? i’m just thinking about that, but you’re in a relationship with nat and bob, and you age regress too.
natasha catches bob in the corridor after the debriefing before they’re about to head home. natasha wrings her arms around bob’s neck and places a gentle kiss to his lips. “hey, sorry sweetheart, i just needed to speak to bradley.” bob meets natasha’s lips for a kiss, but he’s still wearing the same heartbroken look he had on his face in the hanger. natasha tilts his chin down to look at her. “you okay?”
bob’s nose twitches and he blinks once or twice to hold back the small shed of tears. “just, thinkin’ about what mav said and our little bunny.” bob’s voice wavers and natasha can tell he’s starting to panic. she coos at him and guides him down the corridor, “come on, my love. lets get home and see them, yeah?”
once they’re home, you’re regressed by this point and run up to your caregivers with an omph! and embrace them both tightly. bob wraps his arms around you tighter than usual and hoists you firmly to his hip for the next hour, as he listens with intent and a intriguing, bright smile on his face, as you babble on about your day.
bob thought he was putting on a brave face, but you quietly tugged at natasha’s sleeve when he was out of the room. “why does daddy bobby look sad, mama?”
natasha’s heart shatters and she does her best to console you. when she sees you’re safely colouring in, she manages to pull bob aside momentarily and explain what you told her. bob is quick to your side, swooping you up in his arms and squeezing you in his lap.
“daddy’s not sad, bunny, i promise you. i just love you, so, so, so much.” he murmurs against your temple as he peppers your face with loving kisses. it causes you to erupt into a fit of giggles, with bob following on shortly behind at the sweet sound of your joyful laughter. his warmth is tickling at your ears and cheeks, and he encases you whole with his comforting hold.
you spend the rest of your evening tucked up by his side. come night time when you’re tucked up into bed, you’re snuggled up to them both. natasha is facing you with one of her hands softly rubbing soothing circles on your scalp and occasionally knocking against bob’s hand that is also doing the same. but bobby has you wrapped closely in his arms, pressed against his bare chest, and he holds you a little tighter that night.
i needed to get this little thought out of my brain. i hope you enjoy! 💗
Content under the cut!
You were waiting on your balcony.
You doubted he was going to show up tonight but you wanted to talk. Not about anything important, mind you. It was nothing serious. But you found yourself missing his company and well... it’s not like you wanted to burden your roommate with this.
They would only tease you anyway- even if it’s with the best of intentions.
You sighed and let another shiver run through you. It was late and your tea had long gone cold. He wasn’t coming. It was time to get under the blankets before you got sick.
You turned and went into the apartment. Putting your cup in the sink and letting some clean water run through it to dilute it, you rationalize that you’ll clean it tomorrow. Phoenix isn’t coming tonight. He has own life besides being a hero. Not to mention that there’s a lot of people who would want to have his attention anyway. Who are you? Just some coffee shop owner.
You shake your head and leave back to your room. You turn the lights off and move the blankets to get in bed.
Wait.
You groan loudly and get out of bed, turning the lights on once more. You left your book and contracts out on the table. If you lose those, it’s going to take months to get them back in order and they’re needed next week for your remodeled café.
You head out and pick them up, checking them to make sure that no stray paper has been wisped away by the wind.
There’s one gone.
You groan even louder. It sounds like a gunshot in the quiet of the night. “Great. Just what I needed. That took two weeks to get. How am I going to get it in four days?”
“Looking for something?” A voice quips.
You yell and drop the papers. Phoenix drops quickly and puts a hand on the file to keep the paper from falling all over the place- and more horrifying- from being scatter throughout the entire city.
“Sorry.” He smiles sheepishly. He holds up the missing document. “I caught this as I flew by. I thought you were asleep.”
“Almost.” You sag your shoulders. “You caught me just in time.”
You ignore the chill in your bones that hasn’t dispersed yet. That’s what you were hoping the blankets would do.
Phoenix holds it out to you and gingerly take it, putting it back in the manila folder. “Thank you.”
He nods. “Any thing for my favorite civilian.” He bows comically.
You roll your eyes. “Do you say that to every civilian?”
He raises an eyebrow. “I hardly talk to the civilians. You know that.”
You do know that. In fact, you called him out on it when he first showed up at your side to talk to you about your wrecked shop.
You blush, not able to come up with a come back in time. “Well.... shush.”
You sneeze.
Phoenix’s teasing smile drops and he reaches forward. “Hey, you ok?”
His hands touch your cheek. His eyes widen and his jaw drops. You smack his hands away and hiss but it’s too late. Phoenix blinks and rubs his fingers together. “You’re freezing. How long were you out here for?”
“It’s-”
“I kept you waiting...” He says quietly. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s fine.” You instantly say. Because it is. Because you find that you don’t actually care. “You’re here now aren’t you?”
“You should sleep-”
“No.”
“You’re going to get sick like this.”
“I’m fine.” You sneeze again, not able to stop the following shiver in time.
Phoenix’s scarf flaps behind him and reaches forward. It’s warm and soft. You never understood how exactly it managed to function like wings to allow him to fly- but that’s not what’s on your mind. Your fingers gingerly trance the inside of the clothes before it tightens around you and begins to move.
You try to fight it.
“Hey! Let me out!”
You’re dropped back onto your bed. Phoenix looks unimpressed. He retracts his scarf and puts his hands on his hips. “The blankets are messed up.” He says quietly. “You were already in bed.”
“I had to pick up the documents anyway.” You snap.
Phoenix shakes his head. “Goodnight, My Dear. Don’t let me keep you.”
“No!” You reach out- just missing his sleeve. He pauses for you anyway. “You just got here. Don’t go yet.”
He pauses. “Are you sure? It’s late.”
“I know... just... I wanted to talk to you.” You falter. You weren’t intending on being that honest.
Phoenix blinks. “Oh?... Uh... About what?”
“I dunno.. anything.” You shrug.
“...”
“...”
“...Move over.” Phoenix taps your shoulder and climbs into your bed next to you. “I don’t trust you to actually go to sleep if I leave you.”
“Oh please- there are better ways too-” You get cut off. His wings are back and they wrap around you again. They’re warm.
You trace your finger over them and the lines of his scarf. “How does it do this?”
“Magic.” Phoenix snorts. “How was your day?”
You pause and look back at him. He’s laying down, in your bed, with his elbow in the pillow and his fist against his cheek. One of the winds moves to brush a bit of your hair away from your face.
You snuggle deeper into the covers, suddenly not as cold anymore. “A bit boring but productive.”
“Can’t argue with those.” He grins.
You smile back and yawn. “What about you?”
“Do you want the short story or the long?”
“Long. It’s not like I’m going anywhere.”
Unwatered Flowers
“You’re doing this now?”
Your voice was pitched with disbelief. Natasha clenched her jaw, staring at one of the slowly but surely dying plants in a pot on the window seal behind you. You had skipped watering it a few too many times for it to be revived at this point; it was kind of symbolic if you thought about it, considering what was happening right now. She refused to meet your eyes and you huffed, anger spreading through you as your mind tried to protect you from the hurt.
“Really, Nat? Right here? On my goddamn front porch?”
“I don’t know what you want me to say.”
“I’d like you to explain yourself, for one!”
“I’m deploying for nine months, honey. It’s not fair to you to have to wait around waiting for me to come back, if I even do.”
It feels like the wind was knocked right out of you at her words. You knew dating someone in the military would be hard, and you knew the risks that came along with it. But to hear her talk about potentially dying like it was just another possibility was jarring. The devastation at the thought must show on your face, because when she finally looks at you, Nat shook her head and sighed.
“See? That look on your face is why I’m doing this. You deserve better than having to spend all your time worrying about me; better than anything I could ever give you.”
“Shouldn’t that be my choice?” you whispered softly. She doesn’t answer, and you know it was because she knew you were right. You knew this woman better than anyone. She was as stubborn as they come, and it was setting in that there was nothing you could say or do to change her mind.
“I need to go,” she said instead. You thought maybe you saw a dampness in her eyes, but she turned and started back down the stairs of the porch to the driveway before you could know for sure.
“Natasha!” you yelled, right before she opened the door to her tiny little car that you had always made fun of. She paused, but didn’t turn back to face you. But you knew she was listening. You took in a deep, shaky breath, trying to find the words you wanted to say.
“You deserve good things,” you said, just loud enough for her to hear. “And even if that’s not me anymore…I’ll be here when you get back, just in case you decide it is.”
After a moment, you saw the subtle nod of her head. But she never turned back. You waited until her car disappeared from view down the street before crumbling on the old wooden porch steps and letting the tears that had been brewing finally fall.
You, Mav, and Bradley were cleaning up the kitchen from dinner. Mav was drying the dishes as you handed them to him after washing them. Bradley was restoring the leftovers and placed them into the refrigerator.
Mav cleared his throat, “So Brad. Are you doing anything special for tomorrow?” He looked up at him and smiled as he dried one of the plates in his hand.
Bradley smiled and looked at him awkwardly. “Work? Is that special enough, Mav?” He chuckled and shook his head.
Mav opened his mouth to talk again and you gave him wide eyes and shook your head. You wanted to keep it a surprise. You placed your finger to your lips to signal Mav to keep his mouth shut. Mav raised his brows and gave you a nod and a thumbs up.
“What do you all have planned at work tomorrow?” Mav carried the conversation with Bradley as he continued to put the plates away.
Bradley closed the refrigerator door and turned around. He crossed his arms and leaned back against the refrigerator’s door. He sighed, “You know, I think tomorrow is just an inspection day for the junior officers. So we will be going, or I will be checking out everyone's aircraft with maintenance teams to make sure they are up to par.” Bradley looked down and pressed his lips together. “So boring stuff.” He started to laugh.
Mav made his way over to Bradley and patted him on the shoulder. “Welcome to the senior officer life, Brad.” Bradley shook his head at Mav and rolled his eyes while he pushed Mav’s chest playfully.
You turned off the water to the sink and turned to the both of them. Bradley smiled and walked over to you. He had his hands out and placed them on your belly. “How about the four of you? What do you, Leia Rey, and the boys have planned?” He kissed your cheek and rubbed over your stomach.
You scoffed, “Me, the boys, and Leia Rey have a couple of errands to run tomorrow.” You smiled and pinched Bradley’s cheek softly. He shook his head against your hand.
“Please have Papa Mav come with you. I don’t want you to do any bending over, heavy lifting, anything like that.” He raised his brows at you waiting for your answer.
You smiled and nodded, “Of course.”
Bradley placed a kiss on your forehead, “Thank you, sweetheart. I’m going to go to bed now. I have to be up early for work. I love you, baby. Good night.” He placed a kiss on your lips and two on your belly. “Good night, boys. Daddy loves you.”
Bradley walked over to Mav and gave him a hug good night. “Night, Mav. Thank you for helping out my girl tomorrow.”
Mav patted Bradley’s back. “Even if she wasn’t heavily pregnant I would help her.” He started to chuckle. Bradley pulled back from the hug and kissed Mav’s cheek hard. “Aww, Bradley!” Mav pulled back laughing at Bradley’s kiss. Bradley laughed and patted Mav’s chest and then ducked down to kiss his belly too.
Bradley slapped Mav's full stomach hard. “Night, food baby!”
Mav started to laugh and pushed Bradley off of him. “Good night, Rooster.” He said with wide eyes and nodding his head.
Bradley laughed and jogged up the stairs, “Night!”
Mav came over to you and smiled, “So what are we getting for Bradley’s first Father’s Day?” He raised his brows.
You smiled and gave him a devious look, “It’s going to be cute and obnoxious.”
Mav hummed and nodded his head, “Like him. I like it.”
————-
Bradley’s POV
I was at work finishing up the last couple of inspections for the day. I was so tired and ready to head home and relax. I had been out on the tarmac in the hot and humid weather for the whole 12 hours. I felt like my feet were burning up in my boots. They were ready to melt into the hot asphalt.
“Lieutenant Commander Bradshaw.”
I turned as one of my junior lieutenants, Riot, was coming up to me as I inspected his plane. He stuck his hand out to me and smiled. I grabbed his hand and shook it. “Sir.”
I smiled, “Riot, are you here to distract me from inspection?” I started to laugh.
He shook his head and chuckled. “No, sir. I just wanted to wish you a Happy Father’s Day before I headed out.” I stopped the inspection and furrowed my brows before I turned to him slowly. “Leia and the boys are lucky to have a dad like you, sir.” He gave me another smile.
I raised my brows. Holy shit today was Father’s Day? I gave him a smirk and patted his back, “Thank you, Riot. I truly appreciate that. Happy Father’s Day to you as well.” I bumped his fist and he was off. I slowly turned back to his aircraft and finished the check. “Huh, Father’s Day… No wonder Mav asked if I had anything special for today.” I chuckled and met back up with the maintenance team to give them the last bit of paperwork.
————
Your POV
You, Leia, and Mav were setting up all of Bradley’s gifts for his first official Father’s Day.
“Momma! Where should I put these balloons for Daddy?” She was holding a big bouquet of balloons in her hands. If she were outside you were more than positive she would be taken away with all the balloons. She looked at you with her eyes wide, excited, and smiling.
“You can set them up over there so when he walks in he can see them right away.” You pointed in the direction of the open space by the doorway.
Leia ran over with the balloons and set them up for her dad’s arrival. You and Mav were finishing up some final touches. Mav looked at the time. “1530. He will be home in 30 minutes. Phoenix and Hangman just texted me that they are all on their way back.”
You let out a little scream as you continued to set up his gift. “OH MY GOSH!” You started to laugh.
————
Bradley’s POV
I just pulled into the driveway with Phoenix and Hangman. I hopped out of the car and they both came out of Hangman’s car.
“Happy Father’s Day, Rooster.” Hangman smirked at me as he slapped my back hard.
I let out a cough as the air was forced out of me from his slap. I chuckled, then threw my arm around his neck and pulled him down in a headlock. “Thanks, Seresin.”
Phoenix came over and wrapped her arm around me. “Happy first official Father’s Day, Bradshaw.” She patted my stomach as I wrapped my arm around her shoulders. “Thanks, Trace.”
Hangman stood up and unlocked the door for the three of us. When the door opened we were all greeted by you, Mav, and Leia.
Leia came running to me and jumped into my arms. “Happy Father’s Day, Daddy!” She covered me in kisses as you made your way over with Mav. You both had your arms out and came over to hug me. You and Mac sandwiched kissed my face as I laughed.
You rubbed your thumb on my cheek and smiled. “Happy Father’s Day, Bradley.” I kissed your forehead and winked at you.
“Thank you, Sweetheart.” I let Leia down and she pulled me into the other living area. My eyes widened as I saw all the decorations set up for me. “Holy shit, is this all for me?” I chuckled as Leia pulled me over to the table.
“Yes, Daddy! It’s all for you! Momma, Brothers, and Papa Mav helped me set up everything! Do you like it?” She looked up at me with a big smile plastered across her face.
I picked her up and kissed her cheek. “I love it, my little Leia. Thank you.”
~~~~~
After we all ate dinner, Leia came over and gave me a gift. “Open it, Daddy.” She nudged me and nodded. I smiled and placed my water on the side of the couch. I sat up straight and she sat right next to me. “Papa Mav helped me make it.”
I shook the little box and Leia scoffed. I chuckled and patted her head. I unwrapped the little box and opened the lid. Inside was a silver heart with the letters “L.L.B” engraved on it. “Aww, babe, this is so nice! Thank you. A heart with yours and your brother’s initials.”
“Wait! Turn it over! There is more!” She grabbed it from my hand and flipped it over. “Read it!”
I read the little words out loud. “Fly safe. Love daddy’s co-pilots.” I smiled and kissed Leia’s temple. “I love it, sweetheart. I’ll keep it with me at all times.” Everyone looked around at each other and started to coo at the cute note.
“I have one more gift for you, Brad.” Mav stood up slowly and smiled.
I shook my head. “Oh no, Mav, please. You didn’t have to get me anything. Being here is enough.” He waved me off as he walked over to the storage closet. I looked at everyone with wide eyes.
Mav came over with a big long box. I looked at him carrying the box that was nearly as big as him. “Holy shit. Mav… What the hell is that?” I stood up and went to grab it from him. He started to chuckle. I looked at the box with big eyes. “Mav. Christ.”
He laughed and patted my back. “Something I’ve been saving for you. I hope you love it.”
I opened the lid of the box and pulled out the wooden casing. I started to chuckle. “Awww! No way! Thank you, Mav!” I held up the casing and saw my old retired LT. Bradshaw whites in the casing. “This is freaking Sweet!”
Mav chuckled. “Brad.” I looked over at him with my brows raised. “Read the name tag again.” I furrowed my brows and looked closer at the tag.
“N. Bradshaw.” I looked up at him slowly. “These are my dad’s?” He nodded slowly and smiled. I opened the case’s door and rubbed my thumb over the medals. I started to tear up. “Wow. This is even better.” I sniffled. “Thanks, Mav.”
He let out a little chuckle and came over to me. He kissed the top of my head and gave it a pat. “I love you, Brad. Happy Father’s Day, Kiddo.”
Hangman stood up and grabbed a bag out from behind him. “Well, there is no way Phoenix and I can give our gifts now. That was like the best gift ever after, Vapor girl’s gift.” We all laughed as he handed a bag to Mav and Phoenix handed the other bag to me.
Mav looked at the bag shocked. “Wait!? For me!?” He was wide-eyed and excited.
Hangman laughed and nodded. “From all of us, Mav. Happy Father’s Day.” He patted him on the back.
Mav looked at everyone with a Smirk as he ripped the tissue paper out from the bag. He pulled out a shirt and read it to himself. “OH MY GOD! I LOVE IT!” He was laughing hysterically as he turned it around. “You can’t tell me what to do. You are not my granddaughter!” He could barely catch his breath as he said what the shirt said.
“There’s more!” Leia yelled over to Mav. Mav threw the shirt on over his and looked in the bag for the next gift. He pulled out a frame and smiled as he read what was in it. He turned it around, “Best papa in the galaxy.” He looked at it and smiled even bigger. “I’m putting this in my workspace when I get home. Thank you everyone!” He went around and gave everyone hugs and kisses as I opened my bag.
Inside was a frame that read, “I am their father.” And under was a pink lightsaber with Leia’s name on it, A blue one with little Bradley’s name on it, and a Green one for Luke.  “This is Perfect. Holy shit!”
I turned it around and showed it off. “Thank you everyone!” I went around and gave my hugs and kisses to everyone.
~~~~~~
At the end of the night, you and I were lying in bed. You were cuddled on my chest as I played with your hair. “Thank you, baby.”
You looked up at me and smiled. “For what?”
I smiled and rubbed your cheek. “For giving me the best gift of them all.” You furrowed your brows and pulled your head back to look at me. You tilted your head to the side and squinted your eyes. I kissed your nose and smiled. “For making me a father.”
Bedside Manner
Summary: You were expecting the perfect summer afternoon with the Daggers, but when a game of dogfight football takes a turn for the worse, you’re left with a bleeding head and an aching heart. And it’s up to Bradley to show you his bedside manner.
Pairing: Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw x Female Reader
Length: 8K
Warnings: A little angst, a little pining, and two idiots in love.
Tumblr media
It’s a perfect summer afternoon. Well, almost.
The sun is high in the sky and the steady salt kissed ocean breeze keeps it from being too uncomfortably hot. The coolers are filled with beers and sodas and a few pink cans of rosé that Coyote had brought. And the beach blankets were littered with open half-eaten family sized bags of chips and cubes of bright pink watermelon and containers of various dips and ziplocs with sun warmed and mostly melted chocolate chip cookies.
“You guys, really, I’m fine,” you state as adamantly as you can given the circumstances.
Sure, you have Jake’s t-shirt pressed against your throbbing, bleeding head. Sure, you are a little afraid to put your full weight on your left ankle and already dreading the long walk back to your car.
But it’s fine, you’re fine. Everything is…peachy. Or it will be as soon as they all stop looking at you like you’re about to crumple to the ground like some 1920’s silent film starlet from on the silver screen.
Nat has that deep pinch between her sharp brown eyes. Jake’s lips are pressed together in a firm white line. The rest of the team stands hovering around you in a misshapen semicircle, all sandy and sweaty, and wearing the concern painted across their faces.
All except for Rooster, who can’t seem to look at you at all.
“Clearly, you’re not,” Phoenix says flatly, clearly unamused by your attempts to minimize the situation. And you wish that just this once she could have let this go and follow your lead. But then she wouldn’t be Natasha Trace.
Your best friend since middle school had always been the most capable and sharpest person in the room and you loved that about her.
Normally.
But not so much when her keen assessment of you keeps you from being able to slink away quietly without fuss.
“No, seriously. It’s just a little scratch. It’s not a big deal.” It sounds feeble even to your own ears. Trying to hold back a wince when the way you shake your head makes starbursts bloom behind your eyes.
You could have dealt with the pounding in your head if it weren’t for the relentless burning of your ankle that was only making things worse. One or the other would have been easier to manage, but both vying for your attention as the pain pulses with every heartbeat was miserable.
The sun was too hot, the kids frolicking the ocean were too loud, the sunscreen on your skin felt too greasy. All you wanted was a shower and your bed and to forget this whole day even happened.
You look around the group trying to gauge how successful your efforts are, but it’s clear that no one seems to be buying your brand of poorly performed bullshit. You wanted to crawl into yourself like a hermit crab, protected by your own shell, as six pairs of eyes all looked on at you sympathetically, while the pretty brown ones you wanted to see the most were hidden behind a pair of sunglasses and trained down at the ground.
It was supposed to be a fun day.
You’d woken up that morning absolutely giddy about trading spreadsheets for sand and sunburns and sea salt tangled hair. Your cheery, new swimsuit already laid out and waiting for you from the night before.
There was something thrilling about hooky on a Friday with all of your favorite people that made you feel all kinds of young and free. Well, hooky for you. They’d been given the day off after a month of intensive training and testing of some new defensive software. They all deserved the break and you were more than happy to tag along.
You were always the good kid in school, never skipping, never missing a class. You’d felt like a rebellious teen as you crafted your ‘out of office’ email, a smug grin on your face like you were getting away with something. Even though you’d earned the right to use that PTO whichever way you wanted.
The anticipation of a snow day from your childhood school days had nothing on the intoxicating promise of a beach day on a golden summer Friday.
The team must have felt the same way too because the group chat the night before had been chaotically amusing. The excitement was palpable enough that you’d almost think you all lived in some landlocked state rather than San Diego, where it felt like all roads led to the beach whether you wanted them to or not.
Somewhere between the string of all capitalized sentences and exclamation points with a few well-chosen emojis scattered throughout, Natasha had managed to wrangle everyone in enough into sorting out who was responsible for bringing what. There wouldn’t be another veggie platter incident, not on her watch.
You’d felt bright and effervescent as you’d pulled into the parking lot, your eyes reflexively seeking out a blue Bronco that hadn’t arrived yet. With a beach chair over one shoulder and a beach bag over the other and a packed cooler bag in your hand, you’d made towards the multicolored sprawl of blankets and the striped peaks of the umbrellas, where you were met with the smiling faces of shiny happy people.
Some of the boys had rushed over to help you carry your things and added your offerings to the communal pile of snacks and sunscreen and bottles of water. It had been easy to fall into conversation with everyone as you set up your own little patch of paradise and shimmied out of your frayed cut-offs. Natasha had given you a wolf whistle and you’d laughed as you give her the finger.
And hour and a half later with an easy grin on his face, carrying a case of beer and two big Ziploc bags stuffed with what you learned later were homemade cookies balanced on top, was Rooster.
You’ve had plenty of beach days with them but every time you saw him in those damn denim shorts he always seemed determined to wear, regardless of how impractical they were, your mind still went a little fizzy as you took in just how well they clung to his thighs.
He’d taken the ribbing from his squad in stride as he unboxed the beers and added them to the collection already chilling in Bob’s bright yellow cooler. You were trying- and failing- to read your worn paperback book when he’d surprised you by plopping his things next to yours on your oversized towel and stole a chunk of juicy watermelon off of the plate balanced on your lap.
“Hey, book worm,” he grinned as he popped it into his mouth, “How’s my favorite girl doing?” That smile of his getting bigger when you rolled your eyes at him.
“Hi, Rooster,” you’d said looking at him from over the top of your sunglasses with an amused smirk.
And if your cheeks felt warm, it was from the sun and not the teasing tone of his raspy voice.
When he’d shrugged off his shirt to apply the sunscreen you’d brought with him in mind, the wink he’d shot you went straight to your head like champagne. The sun highlighting his impressive abs and sculpted shoulders didn’t help either as he took great efforts to cover his chest and stomach with the lotion. He had to be doing it on purpose, because he’d kept rubbing it in well past when the white hue faded. But who were you to complain? Melanoma was no joke.
“You wanna help me out?” he’d asked turning his back to you, looking over his shoulder. You’re pretty sure that he’d been flexing because he’d looked impossibly broad, every defined muscle standing out for eyes to map out and explore.
You’d been at war with yourself, because while your eager hands were desperate to touch him, you also knew that once you ran your hands along his solid frame that you’d never want to stop. That you wouldn’t be content until your fingertips had traced every inch of him.
You had been blessedly and devastatingly spared the choice.
“I got you, Rooster. My hands are already all sunscreen-y,” chimed in Bob, who had just finished rubbing his own freshly applied layer. “Wouldn’t want it to get on her book.”
You were only half relieved to be off the hook, while Bradley on the other hand was still looking at you expectantly, almost hopefully, still with the white and yellow bottle of sunscreen partly extended towards you.
“That’s so sweet of you, Bob-” you’d started.
“Yeah, so sweet-” Bradley grumbled under his breath.
“I appreciate you sparing my pages the sunscreen grease,” you’d said shooting Bob a smile, choosing to ignore Bradley’s comment completely. “Plus, your hands are bigger than mine. You’ll have him covered in no time.”
Bradley looked between you and Bob before he passed the bottle to the other man, shaking his head a little in defeat. You’d giggled to yourself as you wiggled your book at an openly brooding Bradley, and then leaned back on your elbows to observe the way the attentive WSO made sure to carefully and thoroughly cover Bradley’s entire back.
Respectfully, of course.
Behind your sunglasses you’d admired all of Bradley’s bulk compared to Bob’s lithe grace. But in your defense, they were standing right in front of you and you’d already reread your book at least five times in the past, so it wasn’t nearly as interesting as the scene in front of you had been.
“You look awfully comfortable over there,” Rooster called out with a raised eyebrow.
“Just taking in the view,” you’d teased back.
“Yeah, I bet you are,” he huffed as Bob finished up, giving him a thanks, man before tossing you back the bottle of sunscreen. He’d nudged his sunglasses down his nose and pinned you with his gaze, “Let me know if you want me to get your back. My hands are just as capable as his.” Even in the high heat of summer, the way he’d looked at you sent chills running along your arms.
You felt the way his keen eyes traveled from your face, down the deep-v of your swimsuit and along the swells of your breasts, and down your legs to your freshly painted toes. His mouth had ticked up in the corner then left you reeling and your heart pounding away in your chest as he’d strut off to go join Fanboy and Coyote by the mountain of snacks.
And that was the thing about Bradley Bradshaw. You never knew if he was just flirt-y or flirt-ing.
You hadn’t had a crush in ages, but when Nat had introduced you to her team five months ago, the man with the sunkissed curls and surprisingly attractive mustache had immediately caught your eye.
And as you’d gotten to know him, it had only gotten worse.
Not only was he very nice to look at and could make you laugh until your sides ached, but he also he had depth about him in a way that most men your age didn’t. You liked talking to him and listening to his stories. You liked learning his perspective on things. You liked being around him.
He made you feel interesting and special and funny and seen. You’ve never felt as comfortable in your own skin as you did when you were around him.
Rooster would send you flirty winks, give you less than subtle once overs, and could flash you such devastating slow grins that they’d have you trying to catch the butterflies they released in your stomach for hours after you went home.
But he’s never made a move.
If only he wouldn’t play hide and seek with his true intentions.
You felt like you were still waiting on some small clue whether he was serious or not. You didn’t know if he was just having fun with you or if he was into you and it was more than just friendly banter. It would be so much easier if he’d straight up tell you one way or another.
Needless to say, you’d let Nat be the one to help you with your sunscreen a little bit later. The idea of Bradley’s big hands on you, gliding along your sun-warmed skin and under the crisscross straps of your swimsuit, was too much for your hummingbird heart.
The sun climbed higher into the sky as the butter yellow midmorning transformed into a Midas-touched golden afternoon.
The squad had been able to reserve a fire pit and the plan had been to stay until the sunset. An endless summer day stretching out before them like a cat. They had nothing but time.
Clusters of people came together and split apart like a kaleidoscope as some went to take a dip in the ocean or raid the cooler and snack spread or go for a walk along the shore. Changing and shifting with the direction of the wind, going where the mood took them.
And for a peaceful moment, it had been you with your book and a napping Bradley sprawled out next to you on your towel with his arm flung over his eyes. Close enough that you could feel his warmth, almost but not quite touching. The sound of his soft breaths and the waves their own kind of lullaby as you contentedly read your book, turning your pages quietly to not disturb the man next to you, as the droplets of the Pacific dried on your skin.
You still don’t know how you got roped into playing a round of dogfight football with the Navy’s best and brightest. You were more of a corn hole or ladder toss kind of girl, but Coyote had all but thrown you over his shoulder and dragged you out before you’d agreed to participate, conceding your defeat.
You were on a team with Hangman, Coyote, Fanboy against Nat, Rooster, Payback, and Bob. A few plays in and you had been getting the hang of it. They’d all been making sure to take care to go easy on you even in the chaos of two teams playing offensively and defensively at the same time. You were more than a little out of breath, but you were having fun.
Before the next snap, Mickey gave the most impassioned pep talk you’d ever heard, “Fuck luck, we don’t need luck. We gotta fucking win.” You had been about to laugh, but then you’d seen the looks on Jake and Javy’s faces and decided against it. Curious about the other team, you’d glanced over only to see Rooster looking back at you.
The calls had been made, the blur of plays in motion as people whirled and dodged and sprinted.
You’d just lobbed the ball to Javy before darting around Nat when a big, solid body collided with you. Hard. You’d felt the twinge of your ankle twisting in the sand right before the force sent you flying in the opposite direction you’d been headed.
The impact had been jarring. The air knocked from your lungs.
Where you should have been met with a mouthful of gritty sand, instead your head had connected with the rough surface of a partially buried rock. The low, thick thud reverberating throughout your whole body.
You’d been so stunned that you didn’t even register you were even on the ground until you heard the chorus of oh fucks and holy shits and goddamns and jesus christs over the ringing in your ears.
The game coming to an immediate and conclusive end.
For how many empty bottles and cans were sitting collected in a trash bag off to the side of your beach set up, they had been surprisingly quick to act as you blinked blankly, trying to clear the spots from your vision.
It was a silent ballet of efficiency as they instinctively fell into their roles, much like you imagined they did the sky. Everyone stepping up and then stepping back as they did their part, like the ebb and flow of waves.
Nat had carefully poured some fresh water from a bottle on your face to remove the sand that clung to the sweat and sunscreen on your skin. Then Jake had wordlessly passed her his clean spare shirt he’d jogged of to get to help stop the bleeding after Javy checked on your pupils to make sure they were the same size. While Bob stood off to the side holding your warped sunglasses in his hands, as if he was hopeful they could still be salvaged. Mickey and Reuben had been waiting in the wings giving you space, ready to help if they were needed, but not wanting to not crowd in.
And from the corner of your eye, you’d caught Rooster standing a couple feet away with his hands in his hair looking absolutely wrecked.
“Bradley?” you’d tried, even though his name stuck to your teeth. But he’d just shook his head at you before turning away slightly, like he couldn’t look at you, which made your heart sting as well.
They only allowed you to move to sit up after they were content with the answer to their questions- What day is it? Friday. Where are you? San Diego. What else hurts? My ankle and my pride.
It wasn’t until someone hauled you up from underneath your armpits that the throbbing and stinging and aching settled over you. The pain seeping and spreading through muscle and bone like an inky oil spill.
It’s still an almost perfect summer afternoon except for the fact you hate everything about this.
You hate the way they’re gathered around you with too many pairs of assessing eyes pinned on you. You hate that you’re the reason the game of dogfight football came to a definitive and abrupt end. You hate that you’re the reason their carefree and fun afternoon off has turned into this.
There’s a pressure building behind your eyes, the hot tears of hurt and frustration and embarrassment are clamoring to be released. You have to bite your lower lip to keep it from trembling.
And it doesn’t help that you’re the type who’d rather lick your wounds in peace.
You just need to get back to your car and you can figure things out on your own from there. You just need a moment to yourself.
As you open your mouth to argue your case again, Jake puts his hand up and stops you before you’ve even had a chance to start, “I hate to break it to you, sugar, but you’re not fooling any of us.” He says it gently, but gives you a pointed look at the way you’re leaning heavily on your right leg to keep the pressure off of your left ankle.
“That head wound is not a little scratch. Just like your ankle isn’t just a little puffy, when it’s twice the size it should be. You need to go to the Emergency Room,” Nat says, final and resolute. A lifetime of friendship has taught you not to argue when she has that look in her eyes, the one that says try me, I dare you.
They all talk over you as they figure out who is the most sober of the group after your suggestion to call yourself an Uber is immediately shot down. Drinks are being counted on fingers, and memories are searched to make sure every sip and bottle and can is accounted for.
Your eyes drift over to the man who is still actively avoiding looking at you, even as he talks to everyone else on the team. You aren’t paying too close attention to what he is saying, but you can hear the short, clipped staccato of his words.
Bradley’s shoulders are tinged a little pink even though you know for a fact that you had purposely passed him the 65 SPF. His eyes are hidden behind his dark green tinted sunglasses, but you don’t need to see them when you can read his body language better than any book.
His arms are crossed firmly over his chest, the tendons in his forearms flexing and shifting, like he is squeezing and releasing his fists from where they’re tucked under his biceps. Everything in his body looks coiled tight and strained, so at odds with the easy going and loose-limbed man you know him to be.
You don’t realize just how much you’ve zoned out until Natasha has to say your name a couple time before you pull your gaze away from Bradley and back to her.
“Ok, it’s settled,” Nat informs you, “Rooster’s going to take you.” You barely nod your head in acknowledgement when she tells you, because it feels like you’ve been punched in the stomach now too.
“It’s the least he can do,” Jake drawls.
“That’s not fair-” you start, defensively.
“Fuck off, Bagman-” Rooster snaps.
The rage in his voice shocks you, you’ve never heard that much heat from him before. There’s none of the teasing tone that usually underscores their banter. Jake puts both of his hands up placatingly like my bad, folks and Javy just shakes his head and sighs.
And this time when you look at Bradley, he is finally looking back at you with a deep furrow in his brow. His jaw is clenched tight, that muscle ticking and jumping, as he takes in the way you have Jake’s t-shirt pressed against your forehead.
Not exactly the way you’d hoped he’d be looking at you when you put on your new blue and white striped swimsuit this morning.
The one you’d bought because you wanted to make him look.
Just not like this.
With everything sorted the rest of the team trickles away a smattering of take cares and get better soons and let us know if you need anythings. But not before Mickey hands Rooster his stuff and passes Nat your bag and sandals. He gives you the gentlest of squeezes on your shoulder before he leaves to join everyone else back on little part of the beach you all had claimed before things went to shit.
Your group of eight now downsized to a trio.
Bradley is quick to roughly pull on his tank and shirt, and Nat fishes out your car keys from your bag as she waits for him to slip his shoes on. When he’s ready she passes it to him and he silently slides it over his arm.
Nat bends down to help gingerly glide your feet into your sandals, “I’ll grab the rest your things and drop them off at your place and then one of the boys will drop off your car later. We’ve got it all covered, ok?”
“Thanks, Nat,” you say quietly, trying to hold back a wince as she slips the left one on, your ankle pulsing in tempo with your heartbeat.
“Best friends don’t say thank you, they just do,” she says matter-of-factly as she stands. It’s the same thing you’d told her after you’d dumped a carton of strawberry milk on Carly Radke for outing Natasha your freshman year in high school. It was only time you’d ever gotten detention, but it had been worth it.
“They just do,” you repeat with a small smile.
You’re so grateful that your friendship with her is one that has spanned years. That you’ve been able seen one another grow and change and come into their own, but that you haven’t outgrown each other. She’s the person you want by your side and having your back. There is no one quite like Natasha Trace.
She turns to Bradley and you watch him stand a little taller under her sharp eyes, your straw tote still dangling from his forearm.
“You good?” Nat asks him with a look in her eye that you can’t place. And you’re reminded that even though she’s your best friend, that he has also earned a spot as one of her closest friends. Their relationship built over years and experiences that you could never fully understand. Different, but just as deep.
“Don’t worry, I’ve got her. I’ll take care of her,” Rooster promises with a stiff nod, as he gives her his word. It might have made your heart beat a little faster if you didn’t feel like such a burden. That it’s simply a twist of fate and three less drinks than everyone else for the reason that he’s the one to look after you. That he’s the one stuck with you.
“I know you will,” she says softer now, patting his shoulder, “Keep me posted.” Nat presses a kiss to your cheek and gives you an encouraging smile then heads off to go rejoin everyone else.
You watch her go with longing. The cheerful beach set up with its colorful blankets and umbrellas looks more like a desert mirage now. The sweet coconut scented potential of what the day could have been now forever out of reach.
And then it’s just you and Bradley and the sound of the waves and cries of seagulls.
The two of you silent and motionless.
You feel one wrong move and the fragile attempt of the stiff upper lip you’ve cocooned yourself in will crack open and all the soft parts of you will seep out into the sand beneath your feet.
His expression is shuttered closed as he bends a bit like he is going to pick you up.
“Woah, buddy, what are you doing?” You’re squinting into the sun as you look at him. You’d step into his shadow to block it, since you’re now in need of a new pair of sunglasses, but that would mean moving to the left which isn’t an option with your ankle.
“Buddy,” he grunts under his breath, slipping off his sunglasses and carefully putting them on your face, being mindful of stinging scrapes and wad of soft cotton you’re holding to your head. “They’re definitely going to have to run concussion protocol on you,” he mutters more to himself than to you, “I’m taking you to the Bronco and then we’re going the ER, remember?”
“Yeah, I know, Rooster,” you grit out, even rolling your eyes hurts, “But I don’t need you to carry me.”
Everything about this was excruciating and embarrassing enough without him being the Clark Gable to your Vivian Leigh. Maybe you could lean on him and hop over to his car? Like a six-foot-one pair of crutches with good hair.
“Take a step without wincing and I’ll think about it,” he says firmly, pointedly calling your bluff. There’s an expectant look of go on then, whenever you’re ready on his face. Because he knows he’s right, and you do too.
You don’t even bother to make a move, but the way your lower lips wobbles speaks volumes.
“That’s what I thought,” he says quietly, almost like pains him to be right.
He bends a little to hook his arms around your knees and back to lift you up, and this time you let him. Your free arm automatically wrapping around the back of his neck. And he starts off towards the winking windshields of the parking lot.
You’ve thought about what it would be like to be wrapped up in Bradley’s arms, how good it would feel to be pressed closed against him. And now you are and it’s nothing like you’ve imagined, because there isn’t anything sweet or swoon-worthy about how you ended up in them. You’re his duty, you’re not his desire.
All your sandcastle hopes have been washed away by the tide.
You’re so frustrated. You’re frustrated by the day, by yourself, by him.
This time you can’t blink back the tears that well up in your eyes. They flood through your tear ducts carving hot trails down your sun-tinged cheeks.
You want the Bradley from earlier.
The one who stole your watermelon with warmth in his eyes.
The one who dozed next to you in the sun like a cat, his features soft free of the tension he now holds in his shoulders.
You want your Bradley.
The one who’d whispered cheeky comments in your ear whenever the team got into lighthearted tequila fueled arguments about things like whether a hot dog was a sandwich.
The one who’d always go up to the bar with you on busy nights at the Hard Deck and make sure you didn’t get bumped into on the way back to your friends with your freshly refilled drinks.
You’re aching, aching. Everywhere.
For a brief moment, as you swipe at your tears, you’re happy for the throbbing in your head and ankle, so that way you don’t have to think about the stinging in your heart.
“I know, I’m so sorry, sweetheart. I know you’re hurting,” Rooster says gentle and low as you sniffle, but you can hear the thickness of the words in his throat. The term of endearment is the sweetest of nothings, making your tears come faster. Where it should ease the heartache, all it does is make you angry at yourself for giving your emotions away. “We’re almost to the Bronco. It’s ok, we’re gonna get you taken care of, I promise.”
We.
You wanted that with him.
You want to press both of your hands to his cheeks to make him look you in the eyes to ask him is it going to be you and me together?  You’ve been a fool for love before, but you didn’t know if could take another hit-and-run with your heart.
The salt of your tears makes your cheeks feel tight and itchy as the summer breeze dries them on your skin.
Bradley carries you like you weigh nothing, but cradles you like you’re the most precious things he’s ever held. He’s mindful of any dips in the sand and gives wide berth around the college kids playing volleyball close to the entry back to the parking lot.
When he reaches the Bronco, he sets you down gently, making sure both of your feet are planted on the asphalt before letting go of you to unlock his car. He tells you to wait a moment when you move to open the passenger side door.
“I never know when I might get called up for an emergency deployment, so I like to have some extra clothes just in case,” he explains as he digs around in the backseat, pulling out a pair of gray athletic shorts.
“Oh.” And you realize you’re still just clad in your striped swimsuit. “Thank you for sparing me from the hospital germs,” you say lightly, an attempt at a joke to break the ice. One that doesn’t land, since instead of cracking a grin he just presses his lips together in a firm line and nods.
Bradley crouches low in front of you and you put a hand on his shoulder for balance as you lean against the Bronco, still trying to keep as much pressure off your left ankle as possible as you step into them. He’s looking up at you and even through his sunglasses perched on your nose, you swear his brown eyes get a shade darker as he eases the shorts up your legs. You’re touched by the effort as he ties the strings in a lopsided bow, even if things are feeling tense between the two of you.
“Think this’ll be easier,” he mumbles shrugging off his light blue button up. You’ve always liked this one, with its soft pastel pink and minty green watercolor prints of net fishermen and hula girls and palm trees.
He holds it open for you, helping you thread your arm through it, and then takes over holding Jake’s now ruined shirt to your head so that you can get your other arm past the sleeve. It smells like him, citrus and amber. Your fingers brush against each other when you reclaim the makeshift bandage, and he adjusts his shirt so that it hangs over your shoulders just right.
It’s an awkward kind silent as Rooster helps lift you into the Bronco with his strong hands around your hips. He is all smooth efficiency as he buckles you in with a click. You pass him back his sunglasses the same moment he hands you your tote bag, and it almost feels like a hostage exchange.
He says nothing as he hauls himself into the driver’s side. The car rumbles to life when he turns the key in the ignition and a cheery song from the 80’s station on the radio comes on. Bradley quick to turn the volume down low. His thumb brushing your shoulder as he sets his hand on the back of your seat to look behind him as he carefully backs out of the spot.
It’s never felt this strained with him before.
It’s so painfully obvious that the two of you are walking on eggshells around each other. You can almost feel the wall that’s gone up around him. The white noise of the radio drowned out by the hum of the road as he drives in near silence.
Your day has been most effectively ruined by a chunk of sedimentary rock, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t still recoup what’s left of it.
He could still have the perfect summer afternoon.
He could still go back to your friends and their perfect beach set up and laugh with them as Coyote keeps accidentally setting marshmallows on fire. He could still catch the bold oranges and soft pinks of the sunset with all the satisfied contentment he deserved to experience.
“You can leave me and go back, you know. I’ll be ok if you just want drop me off and then head back to the beach,” you say looking down at your fingers as you trace the stitching of his leather seats.
When he doesn’t answer right away, you glance over at him. The vein in his neck is standing out boldly against the column of his throat.
“Do I seem like the kind of guy who would leave someone at the ER alone?” he asks, his voice rougher than sandpaper.
“No. No, of course not,” you say emphatically, “That’s why I’m giving you permission.”
“Permission?” he scoffs with a shake of his head.
“Yes, permission,” you say, clipped.
You’re giving him an out, why doesn’t he get that?
He heaves a big sigh and grunts. “Is it… Would you rather have Bob- with his big hands- here instead?” Bradley asks, frustration leaking out around the edges of his words.
“Bob with his big hands?” you repeat baffled, “What does Bob have to do with anything about this?”
“That’s what you said earlier, sweetheart. I’m just citing the source. Or I can call Phoenix? Or…” he pauses glancing at the t-shirt pressed to your head, “Or even Seresin. Once we get you checked in I can call any of them an Uber or something, and they can be there with you, if you don’t want me.”
“No, Rooster, I don’t want anyone else.” You wince at the implication and hope it doesn’t read into it further than the current situation to two of you are wading through like quick sand.
“Ok, good,” he grumbles.
“Great,” you lob back.
His hand tightens on the steering wheel, the knuckles turning white, “Then where is this even coming from?” The action makes his thick forearm flex in this most delicious of ways that you’d appreciate more if you didn’t feel the anger simmering low in your stomach.
“It’s pretty damn clear that you’d rather be back there, Rooster. Or literally anywhere else right now.” You flip down the sun visor with more force than it deserves, regretting that you gave him his sunglasses back when the bright California sun in your eyes turns your headache into a full-blown migraine.
“Of course, I’d rather be anywhere else!” he says hotly, tossing his sunglasses back in your lap, “Do you think I like that you’re hurt and that we’re on our way to the hospital?” You shove them on your face with an angry huff.
A car speeds by blaring their horn as they pass by.
“Yeah, yeah, yeah. Fuck off,” he grunts but speed of the Bronco doesn’t change, “Asshole.”
Bradley’s driving five miles under the posted limit, and you know for a fact he religiously drives at least ten miles over. And his turns have been smoother than butter, as if he is trying not to jostle you anymore than you’d already been today.
You are so tired of this hot and cold thing that he’s doing. His words and his deeds weren’t going hand in hand. He keeps giving you the cold shoulder, but is also so in tune with your every movement and need.
Gingerly, you angle yourself in your seat to look at him better, resting your tired left arm on the back of your seat and taking in his strong profile.
“Why are you being like this?” you demand, waving your free hand in a vaguely in his general direction.
“Like what? I’m not being like anything,” he retorts, making the same vague hand gesture as you did a moment earlier.
And oh, if that doesn’t fill your chest with hot indignation. That low simmering anger has turned into a full roiling boil as you shift in your seat trying to get your ankle in a position where it doesn’t hurt.
“Seriously, Rooster? I can feel tension rolling off of you in waves. You’ve been like this since everything turned to complete shit on the beach. I didn’t mean to ruin your day, I’m just trying to figure out how to make things better,” you bite out unable to keep things bottled up anymore.
He sucks in a sharp breath, “Are you kidding me right now? You think you ruined my day?” He glances from the road to you and back again, his brown eyes wide and searching.
“Yes?” Or so you’d thought until you’d seen the shock written all over his face, but now you weren’t so sure. It’s like you’ve dumped ice water on him instead of simply calling him out. “I feel like you’re taking it out on me and I don’t know why.”
“Jesus Christ,” Rooster swears under his breath, shaking his head. “I’m so damn sorry, sweetheart. I’m mad at myself, because I ruined your day.  I should have been more careful, I should have been looking out for you. It’s not like you’re hard to miss in that swimsuit.” Your cheeks heat up at the comment, but you choose to ignore it.
Misery drips from his words like spilled ink off a page. You knew he was upset, but you didn’t realize he was upset about that. That he’s shouldering this fluke of fate as if it is his burden to bear. Some of the anger you’ve been feeling leaves your body like the tide washing out back out to sea. You’re still upset at him for how he has been acting up until this point, but you’re not mad at him about that.
“Bradley, no. It was an accident.”
“Yeah, an accident I’m responsible for,” he says hoarsely, rubbing roughly at his forehead. “God, I can still hear the sound it made when you hit that rock and it makes me feel sick. I would give anything to undo that moment. I need you to know that.”
He is being so hard on himself and your heart squeezes, this time in sympathy rather than hurt. He didn’t place that rock in the sand, the both of you were victims of circumstance.
“It could have happened to anyone. It could have been anyone,” you press delicately, trying to get him to hear you, shifting in your seat again still uncomfortable.
The sunshine bounces off of his slumped shoulders as he sighs raggedly.
“But it happened to you and it’s my fault. You’re bleeding, you’re in pain, and you’ve been crying. And it’s because of me.” He reaches down with his right hand and lifts up your leg so that you can rest it on his thigh, some of the ache alleviating immediately. He asks quietly, “That better?”
“Yes, thank you,” you murmur. He looks so upset, and all you want to do is curl into his lap. You want to hold him and you want to be held by him. “You know I don’t blame you, right?”
You expect him to move his hand back to the steering wheel, but he keeps it on your leg. His thumb stroking your still slightly sandy shin. Your cheery toenail polish at odds with the color blooming around your ankle.
Bradley’s throat bobs as he swallows hard, “Yeah, I do. I know that. But I still blame myself.”
The Bronco rolls to a soft stop at the light. There’s enough traffic that you know you’ll be here for a bit, and so does he since he turns in his seat to look fully at you. You take his sunglasses off, tucking them into the pocket of his shirt that rests above your heart, so nothing stands between his brown eyes and yours.
“So, you’re going to keep beating yourself up over it and icing me out? Making me feel worse? For what, Bradley? Because you’re a glutton for punishment? That’s not fair to me or to you.”
“Shit,” he mutters, his left hand running through his curls. “You’re right and I’m so sorry. I’ve been in my head feeling so damn guilty that I’ve been such an asshole. Can you forgive me?”
You’re about to answer him that when a horn startles you, making you jump in the leather seat. You see the light is green, the car that had been in front of you is gliding through the intersection passing under a blue sign pointing the way to the hospital.
“Bradley, the light.”
The car behind the two of you honks their horn again.
“They can wait. This is important, you are important. Do you forgive me?” There’s an underscore of need that punctuates his question.
“Yes, of course,” you say easily and sincerely. There’s so much remorse in his eyes, you would have forgiven him with that look alone.
“Thank you,” he breathes out in relief. And then he smiles at you for the first time since the beach and that ache in your heart is completely soothed, bandaged by that soft way he is looking at you.
Atlas no longer, he can simply be Bradley.
He takes his foot off the brake and by some miracle he’s able to make it through the light before it turns red again. You can see the tall structure of the parking lot near the hospital poking out above the line of the treetops.
The destination is closer than ever, but there are still things on your mind.
“And you aren’t an asshole, Bradley. But your bedside manner could definitely use some work,” you tease with a smile of your own.
“Baby, I’ve been trying to show you my bedside manner, but you keep holding me at arm’s length,” he groans dramatically.
The idea of experiencing Bradley Bradshaw’s bedside manner makes you feel all kinds of weak in the knees, even as you’re seated in his Bronco with your leg propped up in his lap, his big hand skating up and down along your shin comfortingly.
“How can you even say that with a straight face? You’ve never made a move!” you exclaim incredulously, “I was even the one to ask for your phone number, if you remember.”
“What the hell are you talking about? I hit on you all the time,” he argues with your favorite brand of Bradshaw banter, “I’ve been waiting for you to give me the green light, sweetheart.”
“I thought you were supposed to be pretty and smart,” you smirk.
He barks a laugh and the last tendrils of all the tension and all the pressure that had been swirling around you like a marine layer evaporates.
“You saying I’ve had the green light this whole time?” He looks over at you with a boyish smile, you like the way you feel when he looks at you like this.
“What I’m saying, Bradley, is if you’d have actually asked me out I would have said yes.” You press your toes into the muscle of his thick thigh and immediately regret it, wincing as pain ripples around your ankle.
He makes a sympathetic sound deep in his chest, “Sounds like I’ve been an idiot.”
“A very pretty one,” you allow, leaning your aching head back against the back seat.
“At least there’s that,” he concedes good-naturedly as he pulls into the parking lot, turning on his blinker for a spot opening up near the entrance to the Emergency Room by some twist of fate, one that’s in your favor this time.
Bradley pulls into the empty spot and kills the engine turning to you. He gently eases your foot back down onto the sandy floormat of the Bronco and leans into unbuckle your seatbelt.
He’s so close now looking up at you from under his eyelashes, and your breath catches in your throat. He moves closer, you can see the bits of hazel that surround his pupils. Your eyes flutter close and you tilt your head up, lips parting at the anticipation of his kiss.
There’s no holding back the noise of dissatisfaction you make when his lips press a tender kiss to your cheek. You lean into him wanting to feel, wanting him to give you more. His warm breath coasts over your skin as he chuckles. You can feel the way his lips are pulled up into a smile.
“I’m a gentleman, sweetheart,” he says as he pulls away, his eyes lingering on your lips. “My mom raised me not to go for the kiss on the first date. Or ones with head wounds and potential concussions.”
“Some first date,” you lament jokingly, looking in at the fluorescent lights awaiting you inside the hospital. You’d rather skip over this part entirely, but you’re ready to be done with holding Jake’s shirt to your head. “Nothing like insurance cards and scrubs to really set the mood.”
“Mmm. How about this, after we’re done here, I’ll take you through whatever drive-thru you want-”
“In-N-Out,” you cut in without a second thought. The novelty of it still hasn’t worn off on you, even if the fries are terrible.
“Ok,” he grins, “I’ll take you through in In-N-Out and get you your number two combo with mustard and grilled onions with a vanilla shake.” He pauses waiting for your nod of approval, looking more than pleased with himself when you acknowledge he got your order right.
“I like the sound of this so far,” you hum.
“Well that’s good. Since it’ll be our first date, I want to set that bar high,” he says giving you a wink. And there are those butterflies again, this time you don’t try to catch them with a net. They’re free to flutter around as they wish.
“If you really want to impress me, you’ll also take me through the McDonald’s drive-thru for their fries,” you muse.
“Done.”
“I was kidding,” you laugh, shaking your head at him disbelievingly and thoroughly charmed.
“Well, I wasn’t. So after we get you fed, give or take some fries, I will bring you home. I’ll get you whatever you need, I want to make sure you’re comfortable. Think you might be on crutches for a bit, sweetheart,” he says softly, playing with the ends of your hair. “And then in the morning, if you’re up for it, I’ll take you out for breakfast. Or bring you breakfast. Whatever you want. We can call that date number two.”
“And then you’ll kiss me?”
“And then I’ll kiss you,” he promises, offering you a crooked pinky finger. You beam and you wrap your own around his.
He slips out of the driver’s seat leaving you to contemplate the terms of his offer as he rounds the front of the Bronco. The nurses are going to get an eyeful of him in only those snug jean shorts and thin white tank. You make a mental note to avoid looking at him if they have to connect you to a heart rate monitor, he doesn’t need to know the effect he has on you. Not yet anyways.
“I have counteroffer,” you announce turning your body towards him as he opens your door for you.
“Let’s hear it, baby,” he says with a grin that almost makes you forget how bad your head and ankle hurt, “Shoot.”
“We still go to In-N-Out, but then in the morning you make me breakfast in bed with some of those famous Bradshaw pancakes I’ve heard about,” you say, as he steps in between your legs, “Seems like a good way to work on that bedside manner of yours.”
“I think you’re going to like my bedside manner, sweetheart,” he murmurs, stroking his thumb over your cheek.
You tilt your head at him, taking in the sunkissed strands in his hair and the affection in his eyes, “I guess we’ll have to find out.”
“Guess we will,” he rasps.
Rooster drops another sweet kiss to your cheek, whispering for you to stay put, and then he struts off towards the automatic doors of the Emergency Room. Leaving you alone with the butterflies in your stomach and the hope in your heart.
You dig your phone out of your straw tote and check the time, doing the math in your head.
There are a few messages from Nat and other people on the team already checking in, but you know you’ll have time to reply to them later as you wait with Bradley sitting by your side.
You look up and see he’s got a wheelchair now and is making his way back to you, wearing a soft smile on his face just for you.
Only seventeen more hours until you get to kiss Bradley Bradshaw and you can’t wait.
You’ve got that forever feeling about him.
Oh, oh, oh.
Bradley leaned against the table you two were sitting at. He put his hand over his mouth and stroked over his mustache. His other hand still holding yours. He was taking deep breaths. You were nervous and didn’t know how he was interpreting it all. He was blinking and breathing quickly. He looked pale and like he was going to pass out. He had a million thoughts racing through his mind after he came to realization of what you were trying to tell him. He was still like a statue. His eyes glued to the table. He didn’t dare breathe.
“Bradley. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you.” You looked at your feet.
He shifted in his seat. “Y/n. I-” he shook his head and put his finger on your chin to bring your gaze to his. “I had no idea. Y/n if I knew even in the slightest, I would have never…” He started to hyperventilate, “You don’t have to apologize.” He kept shaking his head, “FUCK!” He slammed his fist against the table. You swore you heard the wood crack.
You scooted back in your seat, you were afraid because you didn’t know how he was feeling. It was as if everything was coming out all at once. Het put his hands on his knees and then started to rub them up and down his thighs. He started to look around not making any eye contact with you. You started to tremble in your chair. You just allowed him to feel how he wanted to feel. You didn’t want to interfere with his emotions.
He ran his hand through his hair, messing it up, “If anyone has to apologize it’s only me.” He was shaking. He kept covering his mouth with his hand. “God y/n. I’m so fucking sorry.” He teared up. “Leia….” He buried his face in his hands. He started to cry. You could hear his sobs, something he’s never let out. Your heart broke for him.
You moved your chair closer to him. You leaned over and hugged him as he cried. You rubbed his back and kissed his cheek. “Bradley, she’s your little girl.”
He leaned back slowly. “God she doesn’t even know who I am.” He pinched the bridge of his nose, tears spilling from his eyes, and staining his uniform, “She has no fucking idea, y/n/n.”
You rubbed your hand on his thigh, "But she will…” You felt like you were gasping for air from all the tension and nerves, “She is your twin, Bradley. She’s so much like you. She’s just like you.” You let out a little laugh, “It’s honestly a little scary.”
He smiled slightly through his tears and anger, “I’m a dad. Wow.” He furrowed his brows and looked down at the floor. “What the fuck.” He shook his head and his smile faded. “I missed all her milestones.” He wiped the tears from his mustache. He threw himself out of the seat causing it to slide back and fall. You jumped slightly at the thud. He walked around the deck with his face in his hands. He was running his hand through his hair, tangling it. He pushed another chair hard and then leaned himself up against a post. He was looking out at the horizon as the moon started to raise. He was taking deep breaths trying to calm himself.
You didn’t know how he was going to react to the news. But you didn’t expect anything less than how he was right now. He had every right to feel everything he was feeling. He just found out probably the biggest news of his life right before entering the hell he had waiting for him in the morning. Everything was falling onto him all at once. First Mav, then you, the mission, and now Leia.
You walked over to him and rubbed his back slowly. You cuddled his arm and rested your head on his bicep, “She hasn’t reached them all yet, Bradley.” You looked down at his hand balled in a fist. You opened it gently and took his hand in yours, “You have the rest of your life to experience all those milestones with her.” You looked up at him and rubbed his arm.
“The mission, y/n.” He sighed and clenched his jaw. He didn’t look at you, “I can’t do that to her. I meet her and what happens if I don’t come back? What then?” He put his hand over his eyes again. He dropped his head and started to cry. He had a hard time catching his breath.
Your heart hurt for Bradley. After all, it is also partially your fault he had no idea about Leia. You comforted him. You stood in front of him and brought your hands to his cheeks. He finally looked up at you, tears streaming endlessly from his eyes, mustache wet from boogers, eyes bloodshot red, and his eyes were sad. You cleaned his face up with your hands and wiped them on your shirt. “Bradley….” You started to tear up and could barely talk any louder than a hushed whisper, “I’m so sorry…I should have told you sooner. I’m sorry to throw this on you now…”
He shook his head in your hands, “You don’t understand, y/n… This is my fault. Of course, you wouldn’t tell me after what I did to you. Why would you?” He was sniffling, “I don’t blame you. There is no one to blame, but me. I could have come to see you when I got back. Found out that way. Be a dad, one she deserves so much…” He closed his eyes tight, “But I didn’t. Now I’m about to leave and might never come home and she’ll never know me.” He gulped hard and put his back against the post.
You stood in front of him and dropped your hands from his face to his hands, “It isn’t only your fault. It is mine too, Bradley. I wish these were better circumstances. I want you to know her.” You took a deep breath and looked at his hands in yours.
He took one hand from your grasp and put it to your chin. He lifted your head to meet his gaze, “I have already broken someone’s heart that means everything to me, y/n… I can’t bear to do it again…” He kept looking into your eyes and took a couple of breaths, “I can’t do that to Leia… I can’t leave you with that mess to clean again.” He started to bite his cheek hard he could taste the blood.
You squeezed his hand tight, “Give her a chance, Bradley. At least just let her see you again.”
He dropped his hand from yours and laid his head back against the post. He was looking up at the ceiling in deep thought. His breathing slowed again. He was thinking about it. He was really contemplating his options.
Your breath was sharp. You knew what he was doing. He was waiting for his sign. Waiting to be pushed, you moved your hand to his face and brought his gaze back to yours. “Do you want to meet her, properly?” You caressed his cheek and gave him a sweet smile.
He looked at you shocked. He stood there for a while and looked around. He put his hand on your hand that rested on his cheek, “I do…more than anything…”
He went to grab his hat from the table and put it on. You straightened out his uniform and wiped his face one more time. You took his hand and led him back into the bar. Mav and Penny were already back in. Penny was back behind the bar and Mav was sitting at the counter. Thank god they left in time so they wouldn’t have to see what happened on the deck. Right as you walked in you went to go and hug everyone and wish them luck. You were sad, but you knew you had to keep a positive attitude. They were all already under enough stress, pressure, and nervousness.
Y/n: “I will see all of you when you come home!” You smiled and pointed at all of them.
You went to the bar and gave Mav an extra long hug. “I love you, Mav. Come home please.”
Mav nodded against your hair, “I love you too, y/n. Always.” He rubbed your back to comfort you. He pulled away and placed his hands on your cheeks and pulled you to him to kiss your forehead. He looked at you and smiled. “Give Leia hugs and kisses for me, please.”
You nodded and a tear streamed down your face, “She loves you so much, Mav. Come home for her. She can’t be without her papa Mav.” You chuckled a little and so did he.
You stepped back to Bradley and he put his arm around your shoulders to comfort you. He looked at Mav and nodded at him. Mav smiled at Bradley, “I’ll see you first thing in the morning, Rooster. Be there at 0600 sharp.”
Bradley gulped hard, “Yes sir. I’ll see you in a couple of hours.” Mav patted him on the back and nodded.
Bradley followed you to your car. You drove to your house. You pulled into your driveway and only Bri was home. You opened the door for Bradley and he went into the house. He looked like he was really nervous. His breath was baited and he was sweating slightly. You closed the front door and turned to him.
You grabbed his hand that was fiddling with his hat, “You’re going to do great, Bradley.” You smiled at him.
His face was blank, “I don’t know what to say to her.” His hand started to shake in yours.
You gave it a squeeze, “You will know when you see her. It will come naturally, just say anything to her. I’m sure she would appreciate anything you say. She loves people.”
He furrowed his brows and his lip quivered, “Anything?”
You nodded reassuringly, “Anything. She is a lot like you, Bradley. She is very loving. She doesn’t have to know someone for a long time to show her affection. She is so innocent and pure. She starts to love the moment she meets someone.”
He exhaled sharply, “You’re wrong. She’s not like me. She definitely gets that from you.” He smiled at you and you chuckled.
You pointed to the hallway. You still had his hand in yours and you brought him over to Leia’s room. You walked over to Leia’s door to see she was already asleep.
“My old room?” He laughed. He peeked in and saw her sprawled out and asleep. “Good, she’s asleep.” He took a deep breath. “I couldn’t do it if she were awake. I don’t want to break her heart if I don’t come home.”
He gave you his hat and he straightened himself out. He stood there for a minute taking slow deep breaths. He pushed the door open slowly. The light from the hallway illuminated her room. He walked into her room quietly. He looked at her on the bed and looked at you.
“Go ahead!” You said in a soft whisper.
He smiled at you and squatted next to her. He was about to reach for her, but then he retreated. He looked at you quickly and in a loud whisper, “What if she wakes up?”
You giggled, “Trust me she won’t.” You gestured with your hand for him to do what he needed to do.
He took a deep breath and reached for her. He slowly turned her onto her back. Her face fell over in his direction. He was lost for words. You saw his chest rise quickly with the sharp breath he took. His jaw clenched and he was biting his lower lip. He studied her while he started gently pulling the blanket from her. He did it slowly trying not to wake her. When she stirred around a little bit he stopped and looked at her like a deer in headlights.
“She won’t wake up. I promise!”
He nodded, “If you’re anything like me baby girl, you’re a heavy heavy sleeper.” He picked her up like a baby.
He gasped as he saw her sleeping face closer to his, “God she’s perfect.” He started to rock and bounce her as she slept. He moved her hair out of her face. “My god she looks just like me…” He smiled big and let out a steady breath. He looked at you and you nodded. “Jesus, how did I not see when we were at the beach.” He looked at her in amazement. “My little girl…”
He continued to study her face, tracing her features with his thumb. “Baby this is daddy. I’m so sorry this is how we are meeting. But I can’t bare to hurt you. I want you to know that I love you so much. You’re such a good girl. When we met on the beach you were the most perfect thing in the world. You have an amazing mommy to thank for that. I hope one day you and I can meet the right way. You are so precious, Leia.” He kissed her forehead lightly.
He cupped her cheek and brought his face close to hers, “I’m sorry daddy hasn’t been there for you baby girl. But I promise you. When I come back from this mission, it’ll be you and I, my love. I will make up for all the lost time. I want to learn about all the things you like. I want to play dress up party with you. I promise I will come home to you and mommy. All my free time will be for you and her.” He rubbed her cheek with his thumb. “God you are so perfect, Leia. My little princess. My little girl.” He kissed her forehead again. He continue to just take her in and hold her. “I wish I was here for you and mommy baby. To teach you how to walk, talk, use the potty, feed you, help you tie your shoes.”
Y/n: “She still doesn’t know how to tie her shoes, Brad.” You smiled.
He looked up at you and smiled and looked back down at her. “Then that’s the first thing I’ll teach you when I get back baby. Daddy is going to teach you how to tie your shoes. I promise. You’re going to be an expert. Best shoe tyer in San Diego.” He laughed.
“I’m going to take you to work with me and you’ll get to meet all your super cool aunties and uncles. God, they’ll love you. I’ll teach you how to ride a bike, swim, and fly. But that last one will stay between you and me. Mommy doesn’t have to know that one.” He chuckled and you shook your head and smiled.
“I’ll be so proud of you no matter what you decide to do. I will always love you, sweetheart. I can’t wait to meet you. Daddy loves you forever and always Leia. I am always with you where ever you go, no matter what.” A tear rolled down his face. He kissed his daughter one more time and laid her back down.
While facing away from you, Bradley took his wings off of his whites and placed them on his daughter’s bedside table. He knew he would probably get in trouble for “misplacing” his pin, but he didn’t care. He wanted to give something to his little girl to show that he will always be with her no matter what. He leaned down to her ear. “I love you, my little princess, forever.” He kissed her again and smoothed her hair out. He pulled the blanket over her and tucked her in. He covered his mouth as he stood there and cried. He smoothed out his mustache and his uniform and walked out of her room. He closed the door and stood there.
He was in front of you. He placed his hand on your arm and rubbed it. “You’ve done such a good job y/n/n. She’s absolutely perfect.” He kissed your forehead and brought you in for a hug. “I couldn’t have imagined anyone else ever being the most perfect mother to my child.”
You held on tight to Bradley in case if this were ever your last time to hold him. It was 1 AM and Bradley had to be back at 6 AM to leave for the mission. “Bradley, would you like to stay here with me tonight?”
He pulled away from you, “I would love to, y/n.” He grabbed your hand and led you to your room. He undressed from his dress whites and was left in his boxer briefs and undershirt.
God, he took your breath away. How were you so lucky to have him be the father of your child? To have him here with you. Your heart started to race and you felt flushed. He turned around and got into bed with you. He sat next to you and rubbed your thigh.
“Are you going to get comfortable too, y/n?” He laid on your pillow still facing you.
You stood up and started to undress. “Holy Shit.” He muttered in a whisper as he watched you. You turned around still holding your shirt. Bradley was taking you all in. Burning this moment into his memory forever. You turned off the light and you lay in bed next to him. He put his hand on your hip and would rub from your waist back down to your hip. It was dark, but the moonlight was coming in through the shades just enough for you to still see Bradley faintly.
“Thank you, y/n.” He said in a raspy whisper. “For giving me the most perfect daughter in the world.”
You scooted closer to Bradley, you could feel his warmth radiating off of him and his breath on your skin, “Thank you for making me her mother.”
He pulled you in closer, you were now touching skin to skin. “I love you y/f/n y/l/n. I love you so fucking much. I was so stupid to not say it when you said it to me. I fucking love you. I love you so much, y/n.” You could see him looking at you.
You brought your hand up to his face and gently stroked his cheek. You exhaled and swallowed hard. You felt the tears forming in your eyes. “And I love you, Bradley Nicolas Bradshaw.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You finally told him about Leia and he met her 🥹 Excuse me while I cry over his and Leia's first daddy/daughter moment. His daddy instinct kicked in quick, he's a natural 😭. I love him so much. 🥰 I hope you enjoyed his reaction to Leia! I'll see you in the next part my loves! 💕

— I MISS YOU, I’M SORRY.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
pairing: theodore nott x reader
summary: you haven’t seen theo since he supposedly left you to join the other side. now that he’s back and has revealed his true intentions to you, you’re finding it hard to be forgiving.
warnings: swearing, kissing, tiniest bit of angst, very unedited. not much else other than a whole load of waffle… my bad
author’s note: this is a sort of fix-it fic… kinda. yes I am very much stealing the essence (you could say) from marauders fics because I prefer writing those and yes it’s basically this drabble recycled and yes grimmauld place is still the order headquarters well into the war just don’t question my timeline and you’ll be fine ok ty enjoy xoxo
Tumblr media
12 Grimmauld place feels unsettling at the best of times, what with the portrait of Walburga Black hurling insults at you every time her curtain slips open and the row of shrunken house-elf heads mounted on the wall. The Order of the Phoenix holding hushed up meetings in the dining room while you and your friends are forced to stay upstairs isn’t anything new or surprising, but the last few days feel different.
Instead of Mrs Weasley telling members of the Order to whisper when you, her kids and Harry and Hermione are in the room, she flaps about ordering them to stop talking altogether. At first you think you’re imagining it when her eyes flick over to you every time, until you bring it up to Ginny and Hermione.
“You’re not imagining it,” Hermione mutters as she shuts the door of the bedroom and casts a quick Muffliato charm before settling cross legged on the bed opposite you and Ginny. “I overheard Mrs Weasley and Tonks in the kitchen this morning, talking about how the Order is arranging transport for some Death Eater spies to come back here.”
You gasp, pretending to be scandalised. “You mean you were evesdropping. That’s not very prefect-y of you.” Ginny snorts at Hermione’s indignant glare and you can’t help cracking a smile at the way her cheeks have slightly reddened. “Sorry, sorry, you know I’m kidding. But what’s that got to do with her looking at me like I’ve gone through a personal tragedy?”
“Your ex-boyfriend did leave you to go join the Death Eaters,” Ginny points out. Hermione gapes at her, but Ginny merely throws her hands up in exasperation. “Well, he did! No point beating around the bush!”
A lump rises in your throat at the mention of Theodore. Truth be told, you’ve tried not to think about what happened since the last time you spoke about him. ‘Spoke’ being a strong word since it was mostly crying and sniffling and blowing your nose into tissue after tissue in Ginny’s room at the Burrow. Mrs Weasley had made your favourite dinner that night and brought you up a hot chocolate to make you feel better. And it really had- so much so that you refused to speak about him since.
You’re more angry than you are sad now, which makes you nod at Ginny’s words. “You’re right. He’s an arsehole, there’s no point in tip-toeing around it for my sake.” Hermione frowns a little, worry clear as day on her face, but you don’t stop talking. “Besides, we’re on opposite sides and this is a war happening. Not some silly, childish break-up. He chose to be a Death Eater and if we have to fight him, so be it.”
Hermione and Ginny stay quiet for a few seconds and watch you breathe heavily. Thankfully, before either of them can speak, Harry and Ron come bursting into the room.
“They’ve only gone and brought Death Eaters into the bloody building!” Ron shakes his head.
Harry snorts at Ron’s dramatics. “Ex-Death Eaters. Apparently. Still a bit dodgy, in fairness.”
“I thought they were spies,” you say, unable to help your curiosity as you stand up. Ginny and Hermione follow you out of the room as you all peak over the bannister to try and get a glimpse of the action downstairs. Annoyingly, there only seem to be a couple of dishevelled looking Order members milling around.
“Maybe Mrs Weasley and Tonks got it mixed up, or maybe they aren’t privy to what’s going on…” Hermione frowns, deep in thought. “I don’t think anyone but Dumbledore knows what’s actually going on.”
Harry makes an irritated sound. “What’s new?”
“Oh, by the way, Mum sent us up to get you lot for dinner,” Ron says absentmindedly as he tries to get a good look over your shoulder at whatever is happening in the hall downstairs. “Mind you, that was before all the Death Eater business so she’ll probably send us right back up.”
The five of you quickly shuffle downstairs to get to the dining room and while your stomach is growling loud enough to forget any thoughts of Order business, Ron and Harry linger in the hall a little in an attempt to get some answers. You don’t doubt Harry will get some, being the Chosen One and all.
You nudge and elbow your way into the dining room where you’re happily surprised to see a messy-haired Tonks yawning over a bowl of soup. She smiles sleepily when she spots the three of you.
“Hi, girls,” she mumbles through a yawn. “Merlin, I’m exhausted. I keep falling asleep in my soup. Good thing it’s mushroom.” She points to her newly platinum blonde hair that matches the contents of her bowl.
“Why’re you so tired?” Hermione asks as she ladles some soup into bowls for you, Ginny and herself. Her voice is quiet as not to attract attention from Mrs Weasley with her questioning. “Is it to do with tonight’s, uh, Order business?”
“Yep.”
Tonks looks as though she’s about to drift off and Ginny seems to jump at the opportunity to gather information.
“So, what are their names?” She gets straight to the point, glaring at you when you choke on your soup a little, not expecting her to be so blunt.
You and Hermione stop eating and wait with bated breath for Tonks to refuse to answer. She merely yawns again, before talking. “You’ll meet them soon enough.”
“Meet them?” you ask, unable to help yourself. “Aren’t they… uh, you know… dangerous?”
“Dumbledore doesn’t seem to think so,” Tonks says, shrugging. You grow a little frustrated at this, since Dumbledore isn’t exactly known for having straightforward plans. While you know his intentions are good, someone he thinks is safe could very well be the opposite. While you ponder this, Tonks’ next words quickly turn your irritation into shock. “The others were understandably quite wary, what with one of them being You-Know-Who’s son and everything, but…”
You feel a ringing in your ear and every word coming from Tonks may as well be directed to her mushroom soup because you aren’t listening anymore. You-Know-Who’s son. You haven’t seen Mattheo since term ended, and even then it was only from a distance. You hadn’t spoken to him since Theo revealed his Dark Mark to you and you’d since avoided his entire friend group like the plague. If Mattheo is in the building, you can only hope and pray that Theodore isn’t with him.
Vaguely aware of someone shaking you by the shoulder, you snap out of your thoughts. “Who else is with Mattheo?” you ask Tonks, your voice sounding rough to your own ears. She blinks through her sleepiness, slightly startled awake by your unwavering eye contact. “Voldemort’s son. Who’s with him? What do they look like?”
You’re so focused on getting an answer from Tonks, and Hermione and Ginny are clearly on the same page as you now since they’re both silent and waiting for a response, that none of you notice Mrs Weasley entering the dining room.
“Tonks, is he blonde or-?”
“Enough!” Mrs Weasley interrupts you hastily, making everyone jump. She sounds panicked, but the look she throws Tonks is stern, like a warning to keep silent. When she turns back to you however, her eyes soften and her voice is gentle, albeit with a hint of annoyance. “I asked Dumbledore not to bring them here while everyone was awake. I didn’t want you all upset again, dear. Look, you can have your dinner upstairs, I’ll bring it up to you!”
You’re grateful for her concern, but it’s a little hard to feel anything other than the pit in your stomach since she’s just confirmed what you were dreading.
Ginny speaks up first, angry on your behalf. “Mum, she deserves to know if that awful git is in the same house as her! I say she ought to go and deck him in the face.”
“Ginny!” Hermione looks at her in exasperation as Mrs Weasley gasps, horrified. “That sort of attitude isn’t going to help anyone.”
“You’re right,” you mumble, getting up from your seat.
Hermione lets out a sigh of relief. “Thank goodness.”
“I should go and deck him in the face.”
Hermione’s sputtering falls to deaf ears as you abruptly leave your seat to go out into the hall, the scraping of chairs behind you indicating that everyone is following closely.
Realistically, you have no plans to actually hit Theodore. In fact, you don’t think you’ve ever successfully landed a punch before in your life. This doesn’t stop you charging into the hallway and elbowing your way through the huddle of Order members to get to the door they seem to be crowded around.
Kingsley Shacklebolt is the last of them to stumble out of your way, clearly too surprised by your sudden presence to continue guarding the door. You raise a shaky hand to the doorknob and hesitate for a second, suddenly nervous. Kingsley takes this moment to snap out of his surprise and redirects his attentions to what you’re about to do next.
“My dear, I’m afraid I can’t allow you to-”
“Kingsley, do you have any idea why I’m standing here?” you say curtly, cutting him off.
He throws a quick glance at Mrs Weasley, almost as if it’s by reflex. Clearly she’s told more people than Dumbledore to keep word of Theodore far from you. “I, uhm, I may have heard a thing or two…”
“Right, so are you going to stop me entering this room, then?” you ask boldly. Your voice catches slightly on the end of your sentence and Kingsley falters a little.
“Well, really I should-“ he begins, eyes darting to your own slightly teary ones. He sighs. “No, I’m not. Just try not to hex the boy.”
He steps out of your way and you finally barge into room, the door swinging open as you stay lingering near the entrance. The room is just as dingy as the rest of the house, lit up by some candles dotted around the room
You first see Professor McGonagall getting up abruptly from her chair where she was previously sat next to a standing Dumbledore. He merely peers at you over his half moon spectacles and raises his eyebrows.
You suddenly feel a little silly, and rude for barging in like that. “Sorry, Professor Dumbledore, I-“
You stop talking when see movement on the other side of the room from the corner of your eye. Just as Tonks had said, Mattheo Riddle, son of Lord Voldemort is standing right there, flanked by Lorenzo Berkshire… and Theodore. Your mouth goes dry.
As soon as you catch his eye, he smiles broadly at you. You don’t return the gesture, taking his appearance in instead. He’s thinner than the last time you saw him. No visible injuries, but he’s definitely seen better days. His dirty blonde hair is overgrown and unruly as it falls into his eyes which, despite brightening up at your presence, are tired.
You keep your expression as impassive as you can, slightly angry with yourself at the twinge of concern you feel. It was all well and good interrupting whatever meeting was happening in here before you came in, but now that you’re here… you have no idea what to do or say.
Theo’s smile falters when you continue to stand there with clenched fists and a stony face and you’re tempted to just run out of the room when Dumbledore clears his throat.
“Well,” your Headmaster says pleasantly, as though you were all engaged in polite conversation rather than a strained silence. “This reunion was certainly a little earlier than anticipated, but I suppose that can’t be helped. I think we ought to give Mr Nott and Miss Y/L/N a moment alone.”
“Uh, can’t we stay in here too?” Lorenzo asks with a nervous chuckle, eyes darting to the watchful crowd standing right outside the door. You can’t blame him for wary, being an ex-Death Eater in a house full of Order members.
Mattheo nods, throwing an arm around Theodore’s shoulder, ignoring the glare he receives. “Yeah. These two won’t mind a bit of company. Right?” he asks you cheerfully. You blink at him.
“Relax, Berkshire,” Professor McGonagall says, rolling her eyes at the way Lorenzo has inched further into the room. She snaps her fingers to get them moving out the door. “Nobody is going to hex you, you silly boy.”
“Can’t say the same for Theo,” Mattheo mutters as he walks past you and follows everyone out, shutting the door.
You don’t really have any choice but to look at Theo now. He tries a smile again, despite the fact you’re not returning it and he takes a step towards you.
You immediately step back.
Theo flinches ever so slightly, his eyes unable to hide that he’s hurt.
Good, you think viciously.
Sighing, he looks at you imploringly like he wants to say something, but can’t find the words. “You’re angry with me,” he settles on muttering, his voice quiet in the dark room.
You let out a derisive laugh. “Angry? You worked that out, huh? Death-Eater’s didn’t completely addle your brain then, did they?”
“Darling, please let me explain,” Theo pleads, taking another few steps towards you.
Rather than stepping back, you whip out your wand and point it right at him. He doesn’t back away, merely raising his hands in surrender and arching an eyebrow as if to ask you if you’re serious. This angers you further.
“Do not call me darling,” you hiss, raising your wand further. Theo doesn’t react, as though he knows you’d never actually use magic to hurt him. Your hand trembles with the weight of the realisation that no, you wouldn’t hurt him. That you’ve actually been more worried that becoming a Death Eater would get him hurt than him betraying you. He left you with nothing but a cold goodbye and you still can’t help caring.
Feeling stupid, and a little bit pathetic, you drop your hand to your side and allow him to continue standing before you as he lowers his hands. You grit your teeth and cross your arms. “Explain.”
Theo lets out a relieved breath. “I never wanted to leave you,” he says, and you immediately roll your eyes. “I- no, look at me. I didn’t.”
“That doesn’t explain the fact that you did,” you deadpan, turning away to leave. Theo quickly reaches out to grasp both of your arms and gently turns you towards him.
You stiffen at the first physical contact you’ve had with him in months, your body betraying you and erupting goosebumps all over your arms in spite of your anger.
“I lied about it to protect you,” he whispers, peering at you through the strands of hair that are stubbornly falling into his eyes from weeks of neglect. Theo looks slightly pained and you recognise his expression to mean that he’s desperately trying to phrase his next words correctly. His eyes flick over to your right arm. No. To his left wrist, where you know his Dark Mark to be. “You can ask Dumbledore if you don’t believe me… Me and the others only ever took the Mark so we’d be able to spy on The D- on him.”
The relief hits you like a freight train and lightens your heavy chest all in one go. You hadn’t just felt betrayed by your boyfriend leaving you all those months ago. You had felt dread at the possibility of him joining a Pureblood supremacist’s cult. Dread at the idea that the views he’d shared with you were all lies and that he was a completely difference person to the one you loved.
Despite the relief, the sting of the breakup still lingers with you.
“That meant you had to be a prick when you left me?” you ask, voice shaking against your will. His eyes soften.
“Yes,” he says weakly. “How else could I have left you without worrying that… that he could use you against me if he found me out? I never wanted to take the Mark and it killed me when I saw the look on your face.”
Your scowl, trying your best to distract Theodore from the fact that your vision has gone blurry from the tears welling up in your eyes. By the look on his face, you doubt you’re doing a very good job. “Do you really think I would have cared about a fucking tattoo, if you had just told me the truth?”
“No, I know,” Theo sighs, absentmindedly drawing closer to you. “I’ll explain anything you want, but the work we did was too close to The Dark Lord to risk telling anyone about at the time. Dumbledore made me, Mattheo and Enzo swear not to say anything. It was safer that way.”
“Did you make an Unbreakable Vow?” you whisper, stiller than ever.
Theo furrows his brows. “No, but-”
You pull away from him abruptly and back away to the door, ignoring the way his hands reach out in an attempt to hold your arms again. “Then I hope the information you got for Dumbledore was worth it.”
You don’t look back at him, nor do you check to see if anyone is in the hallway as you run upstairs and into your room, slamming the door shut as you lean against it, breathing heavily. You stay there for a while, reeling from your anger and irritation at the fact you still have to stay in this bloody house while Theodore’s in it.

The next few days are confusing to say the least. Theo doesn’t seem to have any plans to avoid you, but he respects your space.
Sort of.
He isn’t badgering you every second of the day, but somehow whichever room you’re in, he finds himself in as well. Whenever you try and reach for something, even if it’s not on a particularly high shelf, or particularly far away, Theo beats you to it, ever the gentleman.
It’s starting to unnerve you a little.
One particular afternoon, you walk into the kitchen hoping to make a cup of tea in peace. At the table sits Theo, a cigarette hanging loosely between his fingers. When he spots you, he sits up straighter and you dawdle stupidly at the entrance.
Before you can snap out of it and remember what you came in here for, Theo gets up and walks over to the mugs. “Tea?” he asks politely, and, you think, a little hopefully.
“Will you make it and let me drink it alone?” you ask bluntly.
“I’ll make it and sit with you in silence,” he offers, undeterred despite your coldness.
Narrowing your eyes, you glance at the clock and sigh. It’s too early in the morning to put off having your tea, so you allow it. “Fine. Milk and-”
“Two sugars,” he cuts you off with an annoyingly smug smile. “I remember.”
You poke your cheek with your tongue, but stay silent as he turns his attentions to the kettle. Theo’s face quickly falls when he realises he has no idea how to use it. Your impassive expression almost cracks and you have to bite back a laugh as he examines the thing. Walking over to the counter, you drag the kettle so that it’s closer to you. And so you don’t have to be as close to Theo, but that’s besides the point.
“It’s already filled with water, you just need to flip the switch so it starts boiling,” you explain, pointing to the little part. Theo places his cigarette in between his lips as he furrows his brows, clearly skeptical of the muggle contraption. You suppose you can’t blame him since you, Hermione and Harry have had to explain the kettle to countless members of the Order since it was introduced to the house a few months ago.
You still don’t know where the plug socket is and considering the fact that Grimmauld Place has never inhabited muggles, you aren’t going to bother asking.
When Theo flicks the switch and sees the light turn red, a satisfied smile graces his lips where the cigarette still hangs. You look away from his mouth very quickly and go to sit down. Unable to leave without making things awkward, you decide the only thing to do is watch Theo make two cups of tea. He doesn’t need instruction since he knows exactly how you like it, but something catches in your throat when he uses a green mug. Your favourite colour.
The only sound in the kitchen is the clink of the spoon swirling in the cups and Theo soon brings both cups over with an incredibly concentrated frown to make sure there’s no spillages as he sets one down on the table. The other he hands to you himself and you have to clench your jaw when you grab it, your own hands brushing against his, which he doesn’t seem to be in a rush to move away.
“Thanks,” you mutter, trying to use the burning heat of the mug against your skin to distract from the fact that you have tingles.
“S’alright,” he replies, a barely restrained grin on his face. You narrow your eyes at him over the rim of the mug as you sip your tea.
Damn, you think to yourself. Why is it always so good when he makes it?
The two of you settle into a surprisingly comfortable silence as you drink your tea and he smokes. The puffs are very carefully directed away from you, but you can’t help wrinkling your nose out of habit. Back when you were still together, you were always firm about him cutting down and now you have to restrain yourself from reaching over and plucking the cigarette out of his lips to throw it away like you used to do with ease. He never objected.
Theo notices your looks all the same, and it’s almost like he’s reading your thoughts. He raises a brow, almost daring you to remove the cigarette yourself. “You want me to stop?”
“I don’t care,” you say in an attempt to sound nonchalant. Shrugging, you try your hardest not to react to his obvious bait, but it’s like a bloody reflex. “It’s your lungs on the line, not mine. If you want to lose five years off your life, then by all means, go ahead. I really couldn’t care-”
“As you wish,” he interrupts you, grinning like an idiot again. The next thing you know, he’s putting out the cigarette, and sipping his tea instead. He doesn’t even like tea.
“I didn’t say you had to stop,” you grumble, slightly pleased nonetheless.
He merely hums, taking a gulp of his tea. You accidentally let out a snort of laughter when he grimaces at the taste. Theo’s lips quirk up in amusement when you laugh, unrestrained and it’s only when you catch him staring at you that you quickly stop.
The smug expression on his face quickly returns as though he knows you’re finding it hard to be fully angry at him.
“Stop looking at me like that,” you snap, drawing your knees up on your chair towards your chin. “You look stupid. And your hair is too long.”
Theo huffs out a surprised laugh. “My hair is too long?” he asks incredulously, reaching up to tug a piece down so it reaches the bottom of his nose. “Hm, you’re right. You cut it pretty good that one time. Would you do it again for me?”
“Mrs Weasley is better at it,” you say, chin jutting out stubbornly. “I’m sure she’d be delighted if you just ask.”
“The way she looks at me, I’d be lucky to get away with my head still attached to my body,” he drawls, wholly unimpressed by your suggestion. “Why can’t you do it?”
“Because I’m not done being angry with you yet,” you reply simply, draining the contents of your mug. “Trust me when I say you don’t want me anywhere near your head with a pair of scissors either.”
Theo nods slowly, a smile gracing his lips— strange, since you just threatened physical violence. “So, what I’m hearing is that you’re not going to be angry with me forever.”
“I- Well, I didn’t mean-” you stutter pointlessly, cutting yourself off with a sigh. “I don’t know yet. It’s too early for this, leave me alone.”
“That was the first cigarette I’ve had since before I left,” Theo says quietly, searching your face for a reaction, almost nervously.
You aren’t quite sure how to respond to this random piece of information and you find yourself floundering. “Uhm. Okay, good. That’s… Yeah, that’s great for you and your lungs, well done. Saves money too. They were actually, uh, saying on the news the other day that the average amount people spend on-”
“Darling, as much as I appreciate it, that’s not what I’m getting at,” he interrupts, the ghost of a smirk at his lips. You scowl at him for letting you go on for so long and motion for him to get to the bloody point. “Every time I brought a cigarette to my lips, I remembered you weren’t going to be there to nag me about it. It just feels pointless now.”
You stare at him. “Nice to know that my nagging was what you remembered me by.”
“That’s not-” Theo cuts himself off with a laugh that sounds halfway to a groan. “Merlin, you’re not going to make this easy for me, are you?”
You open your mouth to respond, but before you can get a word out, Harry walks in which you find odd considering it’s so early in the morning and him and Ron are usually only out of bed when Mrs Weasley yells them down for breakfast.
“Morning,” he says through a yawn. The greeting is directed at you, but he sends an expectant look at Theo right after. “Time to leave, Nott.
“Leave for where?” you ask before you can help yourself. You realise with a start that Harry and Theo are dressed and ready while you’re still in your pyjamas. “Where do you have to go?”
“Horcrux hunting,” Harry says flippantly, as though he’s just announced he’s going fishing. Hermione had filled you in on the information Theo and the others had ascertained from their time with Voldemort, but you didn’t even consider them or Harry would actually be going with the Order to find them. “Nott and the others know more than we do, so they’re coming with.”
You level a look at Theo, who seems to be pointedly avoiding eye contact with you. “Thanks for sharing that tiny tidbit of information, by the way,” you mutter sourly.
He winces, getting up slowly from his chair. “It, uh, didn’t seem that important. It’s only a quick little task anyway. We’ll be back before you know it.”
“I’m not stupid,” you scoff, standing up so you can attempt to look a little more dignified as you confront Theo. Harry, on the other hand, looks as though he regrets his decision to enter the kitchen in the first place. Despite this, you hadn’t missed the way he furrowed his brows when Theo spoke. “Even if Harry wasn’t looking at you like you were speaking gibberish, I would know that you’re lying. It’s a Horcrux you’re leaving to get. Not the weekly food shop.”
Harry snickers at this, though quickly turns it into a cough when Theo sends him a withering glare. Sighing, you decide to ignore him for the moment and turn to Harry instead
“Be safe,” you say, gentler than before. “And don’t be a hero, just try and get out of there safely.”
“Pfft,” Harry waves you off, a sarcastic tone entering his voice. “When have you known me to do that?”
You roll your eyes, cracking a smile as he walks away, supposedly to find the rest of the group.
“Don’t I get a ‘be safe’ as well?” Theo tries for a casual, joking voice. A hint of irritation seeps through it though. You shift on your feet a little awkwardly, slightly flustered at his obvious jealousy.
“Uhm, okay. Bye,” you say stiffly, fiddling with the loose string of your cardigan sleeve so you have something to do with your hands other than ball them up at your sides. Theo seems to be satisfied with the curt response, or more likely your lack of insults, and he nods, turning away to leave. As you watch him walk away, a familiar sense of anxiety bubbles up in your stomach and you blurt out the only thing you can think of. “Don’t die!”
He slowly turns around, very clearly holding back a grin. You think you might thump the boy. “Will you forgive me if I come back alive?”
“Well,” you huff, crossing your arms. As petty as it may be, you’ve always found it hard to loosen a grudge. You settle for a shrug instead. “Come back alive first and then I’ll see.”
Theo takes two steps forward and closes the short distance that was previously allowing you to keep a cool- well, cool-ish, head. He keeps both arms behind his back, however, as he dips his head down slightly.
“My sweet, stubborn girl,” Theo says in a low voice. His proximity flounders you for a moment and you don’t even protest that no, you’re not his anything. The way your breathing turns shallow would be contradicting that greatly though. “I’ll try my best. And if I don’t come back alive, I promise you can yell at my ghost.”
You scowl, and this time you actually do thump him on the arm. “You’re not funny, you idiot. Now, go. I can already hear Mattheo irritating the patience out of Harry.”
Theo gives you a little two-fingered salute and a wink before he walks away again, leaving you alone with a funny feeling in settling in your stomach.

You aren’t the only one who sits anxiously in the living room waiting for the group to return with the infamous Horcrux. Ron has eaten his way through three bowls of cereal and rapidly makes a start on his fourth while Hermione tries to distract herself with reading a book that she hasn’t noticed is upside down.
After another hour goes by, Ginny, who was previously pacing up and down the stairs, sighs and turns Hermione’s book the right way up which startles her, causing her to give up altogether.
You sit cross-legged and completely still, other than switching your legs every time one of them goes numb. Eventually, you get so sick of watching Mrs Weasley mop over the same spot on the floor for the fifth time that you jump up from your seat, causing her to start and knock over the bucket of dirty mop water all over the floor.
“Oh, dear,” she mutters, waving her wand and siphoning all the water up in a second.
“Sorry, Mrs Weasley,” you say, wincing. “I’m just a little stressed since it’s been ages already-”
You get cut off by Hermione gasping at the sound of the front door opening along with voices. She grips your arm tightly. “They’re back!”
Barely registering the pain of her nails digging into the skin of your arm, you waste no time in running into the hall with the others to greet everyone at the door. You can’t help the relieved smile on your face when you do a quick head count and find everyone present.
As you get closer, you see how exhausted they look. Not to mention the fact they’re dripping water all over the rug. Harry stands at the front of the group looking like he might collapse if he stands any longer and Hermione and Ron pick up on this as they rush over to help him inside.
As they stumble him across the hall, you stop craning your neck as Theo comes into view. The relief you previously felt leaves you faster than your body knows how to deal with and you have to force yourself to breathe when you take in the state of him.
At first glance he doesn’t look particularly worse than the rest. They all have a vaguely haunted look in their eyes along with a sickly pallor like they haven’t seen the sun in days.
But the way Mattheo and Lorenzo are holding him up brings attention to the fact that all of his weight is being put on one leg. The other, to your horror, has a deep, bloody gash trailing down his thigh and onto his calf. The sight of blood steadily dripping onto the floor below has you frozen, almost mesmerised in a terrible way, and it’s not until Dumbledore speaks that you snap out of it and to attention.
“Miss Y/L/N, if you could please fetch Madam Pomfrey for me,” Dumbledore asks, his voice a lot calmer than you feel. You nod, turning away quickly before Theo can see the panic which is probably clear as day on your face.
It takes a scary second to find Madam Pomfrey, but as soon as you do, she gets down to business preparing her supplies in the living room which is as far as Theo seems to be able to make it.
He lays on the sofa, breathing shallowly as Madam Pomfrey crouches down beside him to begin assessing the wound. Peering at it closely, she looks up at Dumbledore sharply. “Inferi?”
“I’m afraid so,” he replies solemnly and you let out a choked sort of whimper.
“Merlin,” Ron whispers, looking like he might be sick. Whether that’s because Madam Pomfrey is cleaning Theo’s leg, or because of the mention of Inferi, you aren’t sure. “What the hell were you guys doing?”
“All will be explained, Mr Weasley,” Dumbledore reassures him, looking over his spectacles. “However, I must insist that for now we allow dear Madam Pomfrey to tend to Mr Nott’s injuries.”
“Will you be able to heal him?” Mattheo asks, swallowing hard. The concern in his voice for his best friend has your heart clenching and you look to Madam Pomfrey just as earnestly for an answer.
“Yes, I dare say I can,” Madam Pomfrey says grimly, but she pulls out a couple little bottle of potions from her bag with a frown. “That doesn’t mean it won’t be extremely painful, unfortunately.”
“Can’t imagine what pain feels like,” Theo mumbles, shifting his position on the sofa slightly and wincing. His face goes whiter than before and he shuts his eyes tightly from the pain, but he still manages to talk, however hard it may be. “Not like I’ve just had Inferi mistaking my leg for their lunch.”
“No talking and no moving,” Madam Pomfrey instructs Theo, sending him a stern glare.
“Sorry-”
“Shhh!” you hiss, giving him a glare of your own. Theo’s eyes flutter open slightly and his lips quirk up when he sees you leaning over him as close as you can get without Madam Pomfrey shooing you away.
His smile quickly drops when Madam Pomfrey pours some purple liquid into the open wound, causing it to hiss and smoke. The groan that leaves Theo has you holding your breath and you fight the urge to shut your eyes and turn away.
“Merlin, I can’t watch,” Lorenzo gags, his skin turning even sicklier than before. Turning away, he holds onto Mattheo’s shoulder to steady himself, the latter looking more interested than anything as he peers at Theo’s sizzling cut. Lorenzo shakes his head and holds a hand over his mouth every time he can hear Madam Pomfrey pouring more of the potion. “Oh, God, that’s disgusting.”
“Mr Berkshire, if you are unable to watch, then don’t,” Madam Pomfrey snaps, screwing the bottle shut and grabbing another one. She waves her hand in an impatient shooing motion. “In fact, everyone out. Now! This isn’t a Quidditch match, for heaven’s sake!”
Dumbledore starts filing everyone out and you consider staying for a minute but Madam Pomfrey’s raised eyebrows have you hurtling out of the room with everyone else. Theo starts to say something, but a drop of something else makes him grit his teeth and the green smoke produced by the potion follows you out the door.
The next hour or so is filled with Harry, Mattheo and Lorenzo being fussed over by Mrs Weasley, who insists on them going up to bed once they’ve cleaned up and changed into dry clothing. Unfortunately for the rest of you, this means you won’t be getting an update any time soon. Dumbledore is, as always these days, nowhere to be seen.
“I wonder if they found the Horcrux,” you say under your breath to Hermione as she anxiously taps her foot against the kitchen floor.
“They did,” she says grimly, glancing impatiently at the clock. She has her thinking face on, brows furrowed and gaze distant. “It was in a cave in the middle of nowhere. Harry quickly told me before Mrs Weasley sent them off. I wonder when they’ll wake up though… They didn’t look too happy, and I have a feeling it wasn’t all to do with Nott.”
You nod slowly, a weight lifting off your chest despite the last part. If, after all this, they hadn’t retrieved the Horcrux, you think you’d probably have gone to the bloody cave yourself.
“Theodore’s resting now, anyway,” Hermione adds, giving you a quick glance as though she’s waiting for a reaction. You keep your face as impassive as you can, attempting a casual nod. “Madam Pomfrey says he’s healing nicely and his leg will be fine. It’ll just be a bit sore for a few days. I’m sure he’s awake if you want to go see him.”
“I might,” you mumble, shrugging. You try to sound flippant, but the urge to clamber out of your seat probably shows because Hermione rolls her eyes at you.
“Oh, why don’t you just put him out of his misery?” she asks, her words coming out at the speed of light, like she’s been wanting to say it for a while. You blink at her in shock. Sighing, she leans over the table and her tone becomes gentle. “I know he lied to you, and you should be angry with him for that! But… well, it’s been a really awkward few days with him asking us where you are every second of the day. And, technically, he was never really a Death Eater, he was helping our side!”
Hermione takes a deep breath and exhales, slumping back in her seat as she waits for your reaction. You try not to laugh. “How long have you been holding that one in?”
“Since the second he turned up here,” she says, sagely. “Now, don’t change the subject! Go and see him. Go on, off you go!”
You stand up, swiftly dodging Hermione’s flapping hands to try and rush you out the door. “Okay, I’m going. It’s probably about time anyway,” you grumble, a fond smile creeping up on you nonetheless.
Looking satisfied, Hermione stops trying to usher you out and you make your way over to the living room again. The door is open and you sigh with relief when you notice the room is empty, bar Theo who’s in the same position as he was the last time you saw him. His eyes are shut and you wonder if he’s sleeping until you step on a creaky floorboard and he cracks one eye open.
“Hey,” you say quietly, tip-toeing into the room to perch on the coffee table adjacent to the sofa. “Did I wake you?”
“Nah,” Theo replies, moving to sit up as much as he can. You suspect he’d have the same answer even if he was asleep. He looks a lot more awake than he did before and you feel your chest squeeze tightly when you realise how glad you are. Theo seems to notice this and he reaches over to hold one of your hands, detaching it from the way you grasp them both together. “I promised you I’d come back alive, didn’t I?”
You snort, shaking your head at his ability to be so chipper. “Alive and dripping blood all over the carpet. You know if Kreacher finds out it was you, he’ll murder you in your sleep, right?”
“It doesn’t count if I die now,” Theo protests, frowning as if you’re talking about a serious possibility and not joking. “Deal was you’d forgive me if I came back alive after finding the Horcrux, remember?”
“Hm,” you hum, pretending to think deeply about it as he rubs circles on the back of your hand with his thumb. It causes you to momentarily lose your focus. “What I remember saying is that I would think about it.”
Theo shakes his head, a look of mock concern overtaking his features. “I think the stress of my injury has gotten to your memory… What I remember is you vowing to forgive me the moment I stepped foot in this place.”
“I think Madam Pomfrey’s painkillers are getting to you,” you say drily, moving to kneel on the floor next to him.
“She didn’t use any,” Theo grumbles, looking mournfully at the bandages on his leg. “She’s really sadistic, I’m telling you.”
You laugh, ducking your head so you aren’t flustered by the way Theo’s eyes focus on your smile with a grin of his own.
“You know what she told me would help with the pain?” Theo asks quietly, his enviously long eyelashes fanning over his cheekbones as he looks down at you, almost nervously.
“Let me guess,” you say, sitting up so the distance between your faces is much shorter now. “A kiss to make it all better?”
“Healer’s orders,” he says, shrugging. His breathing quickens when you don’t move away and he swallows hard, eyes dropping lower to your mouth when you bite your lip to stop from cracking a smile. “I’m not saying you have to, but if you’re okay with going directly against her orders, then-”
You cut him off by pressing a lingering kiss to his lips and he inhales sharply, unmoving for a split second before parting his lips and deepening the kiss. Theo’s hands move to your waist where he uses his remaining strength to hoist you up onto the sofa next him, one of your legs thrown over his waist as you half-straddle him.
You gasp into his mouth when he nips at your bottom lip and the sound he makes in the back of his throat has your cheeks warming up and you kiss him harder. The fact it’s been so long since you’ve even been near him has you both kissing for what feels like hours and you only pull away when you need to breathe and you’re worried you’re leaning on Theo’s leg.
Pulling away, you scan Theo’s face and pause for a second to take in his beautiful features. His eyes are blown wide like he can’t believe he’s here with you, kissing you. A warm feeling starting in your stomach spreads all the way down to the tips of your fingers as he looks at you.
“Any other very important requests from the Healer?” you ask breathlessly, feeling a shiver run down your spine where Theo lightly skims his fingers. A dangerous smile overtakes his face and his lips, pink and swollen from kissing you, curve up, causing you to narrow your eyes at him.
“I think she mentioned something about a sponge bath?”
You whack his arm and he yelps, grabbing your wrist to stop you assaulting him further. “Hey, I’m an injured patient!”
“Your leg is injured, not your arm.”
“It is now,” he says, pouting as he rubs dramatically at his bicep where you lightly thumped him. He grumbles when you roll your eyes and press another kiss to his lips to get him to stop pouting. “You’re lucky I love you.”
“Hm,” you hum, settling your face in his chest and sighing at the warmth of his arms, feeling him smile against your forehead where he kisses you.

A fast feather scraped over parchment, filling the silence in the waiting room. Penelope hunched over her parchment as the feather wrote down her exact thoughts. You entered the waiting room, seeing her write so lost in her thoughts. An annoyance grew over you. – “Writing about me again for your latest sheet?” – you said out loud, wandering around the armchair closer to her. Penelope glanced to the side, pausing her writing briefly before continuing.
“It is a letter.” – she responded after some silence. – “One to your adoring readers?” – you teased moving closer to the window. Moving the curtain a bit aside to peek outside. – “Perhaps you can ask your adoring readers for their opinion on me? I’m sure they would be delighted to follow in your delusions.” – you spoke with a mocking undertone. It made Penelope lay her feather down.
“I thought you didn’t wished to speak to me ever again.” – she replied bitsy, making you briefly look over your shoulder to her. – “I am.” – you spoke. – “You are the just the only breathing thing in this house at the moment.” – you left the window moving more to the centre of the room. Penelope swallowed a bit, glancing your way.
You went around the armchair, making your way for the door with your head up high. – “You shouldn’t give me ideas.” – you heard your sister call out to you as you were heading out. Not liking the taunting in her tone, you went back inside, picked up the nearest pillow and threw it at her. The pillow hit her and the ink bottle. It fell over, spilling her parchment and a bit of her dress.
Penelope gasped loud, jumping up at the sudden wetness on her dress. – “Do not provoke me sister!” – you said in a cold tone, throwing a glare at her. Penelope looked in shock at you for having spilled ink on her dress. You turned on your heel, heading out once more. In the hallway, you walked through the house, making your way to the garden. Setting foot in the sun, you took in a deep breath.
Glancing over your shoulder, you lowered your gaze. Feeling like there was no one to trust. Not your own sister nor Colin with his false promises. You headed for the large tree where the swing was strapped to. You carefully sat down. Balancing on your feet to move the swing a bit. Lost in thoughts, you stared down, fidgeting with your fingers on your lap.
Breathing out loud, you looked away, finding yourself pathetic. A shadow of yourself sitting on the swing. For a moment, just for a moment, you thought you’d be his. That you found someone to love you unconditionally. Colin had always been a good friend of your sisters. Colin and you weren’t that close to begin with. It wasn’t like you could get to know him that well since your sister had a way of claiming him.
Ever since you were little. So it was shocking to know that Colin was interested in you, or at least even for a little while. Perhaps that kiss meant nothing to him, but it meant everything to you. The first time a boy showed such affection towards you. Colin must have kissed plenty of girls, that it had little meaning by now. To you it felt like he had stolen something from you.
Stolen something he couldn’t return. Touching your lips, you recalled the feeling it left on your lips. Strangely enlightening. Bringing your fingers down, you tore your gaze away, feeling foolish. Wanting to forget about stupid Penelope and stupid Colin, you grabbed the cord firmly.
Setting your feet off as the swing got in motion. Kicking your feet back and forth to create the friction. Up, up, up you went. Higher and higher till you could reach the clouds. The wind blowing through your hair untangling it as it had a mind of its own now. Blissfully you smiled, forgetting about your worries for a moment.
Leaning back, you watched the skies make you feel dizzy. The light making you squint your eyes as you let the swinging die out. Pulling yourself back up when you were closer to the ground. A summer’s sadness on your face as the swing slowed down. Staring lost in front of you. With a huff you got up, having enough of it. You weren’t going to let anyone humiliate you ever again.
Not your sister not Colin, not again. The hell with Penelope. The hell with Colin Bridgerton for he would never loose his boyish act. Seeing his true colours clearly in a shade of green. You looked curiously up hearing your name from afar. Prudence stood in the entrance leading outside. – “Coming!” – you called out, lingering for but a moment before going inside.
Phillipa was fanning vigorously in the carriage. Mama slapped her hand on her hand to stop her hurricane of fanning. Phillipa gave mama a sheepish smile, followed by a nervous swallow. Mama moved a bit closer to the centre of the carriage, placing her hand on Phillipa and yours knees that were in reach. – “Now girls it is not too late for us to shine.” – she said to pep herself up. – “We’ll attract nice men and turn this tide.” – she patted your knee with a trusting smile.
Prudence who sat beside you across from Phillipa took your hand, giving it a soft squeeze. – “We’ll find you a good husband.” – she whispered to you. Penelope let an amusing chuckle slip. Making everyone stare at her. – “Something funnily Penelope?” – mama questioned with a quizzable brow. Penelope cleared her throat.
“No mama.” – she answered. The rest of the carriage ride was in silence. Till you rode up to the event. A springs festival. Tents stationed around. Flowers used as decoration to celebrate its bright colours. The footman opened the door helping mama out first. Then Phillipa and Penelope. Prudence and you as last.
By one of the tents you immediately recognized the Bridgerton brothers. It made you turn around, hoping they hadn’t noticed you. There was one thing you wanted to avoid at any cost. Colin Bridgerton. – “Come girls.” – Mama said pulling Phillipa with her. Penelope and Prudence followed as you rather wanted to disappear. So you headed the other direction than them.
Walking around groups of gathering people to find a way around. Having squeezed yourself between two groups who stood with their backs at each other, you let out a soft gasp. Coming face to face with Eloise Bridgerton. – “Y/n!” – she let out with wide eyes. – “Eloise.” – you replied nervously. – “Penelope is that way.” – you informed her, going round her to not engage any further.
You quickened up your step, hastening away from her. Freezing you saw Kate with two glasses in her hand. Probably one for her husband as well. Moving your hand against your cheek, you bowed your head for her not to notice you. Avoiding these Bridgerton’s seemed harder as they seemed to turn up at every corner.
Colin stood by the tent with Anthony and Benedict. Anthony nudged him in the side. Motioning with his head in the direction of the Featheringtons. Colin got on the tip of his toes, staring at them. Anthony kept gesturing with his head for him to make a move. Colin set his feet back down, shaking his head with pulled up shoulders. Benedict stared at the display. – “Why do I get the feeling I am missing something.” – he let out, feeling excluded for whatever it was they shared.
Anthony kept bugging him to do something. – “She is not there.” – Colin shout-whispered to him. – “Then find her!” – Anthony spoke back giving him a push. – “I am definitely missing something.” – Benedict answered looking over at Francesca who sat down with a book. Francesca pulled her shoulders up, forming a thin line of her lips.
Colin exhaled deep getting in motion. – “What am I missing?” – Benedict asked Anthony. Anthony rolled with his eyes taking his leave. – “An…Anthony!” – Benedict called out going after him for answers. Francesca shut her book, getting up. Kate arrived at the tent, looking confused around for everyone had taken their leave.
You were still walking around, staying close to large groups so you wouldn’t stand out. You even had lost track of where your family was. You started to look around for escape’s if you indeed did encounter Colin Bridgerton to your dislikes. You moved through a group, eyes widening when you came nose to nose with Francesca Bridgerton. – “Colin is looking for you.” – she said with a shy smile. – “Must I encounter every Bridgerton?” – you mumbled under your breath, taking your leave.
Francesca blinked confused feeling too shy to call out your name and draw any attention towards her. Your unfortunate encounter with her led to spotting Colin through the crowd. He turned at the exact same time, you saw him, making him notice you. – “Y/n.” – he called out making his way over. You turned round, pushing some people aside to make your escape. Colin furrowed his brows, going in pursuit. You started to run faster, no way wanting to be near with him. Some heads turned your way at you taking a run for it.
Leaving the festive for the woods. Panting loud, you ran till you jumped aside, hiding behind a tree trunk. You heard twigs snap underneath shoes as it made you cover up your mouth. – “Y/n? Y/n? Where are you?” – it was Colin calling out to you. You tried to remain still not wanting him to find you. – “Y/n I… I want to talk about our last encounter.” – he let out looking around for you.
He waited for an answer but you never gave one. There was another pair of footsteps, this time coming from the front. Your eyes widened when a brown bearded man came to a stop. Staring right back at you. Slowly questioning what you were doing. Seeing an opportunity you whispered to him, to help you. You walked up to the man, taking him by his arm as you walked out in the open.
Colin coming to a stop as he saw you appear around a man’s arm. – “Y/n?” – Colin said in disbelieve. – “Can’t speak now Colin, can’t you see a woman is in company.” – you replied walking past him with the lord. Putting on a smile to show Colin you didn’t need him and his false promises. The lord seemed to play along, laying his hand on yours around his arm. Starting to talk about nature as you listened half.
Colin turned to your departure with shock in his eyes. – “Y/n.” – he squeaked out too stunned that you were walking with another lord. Nearing the festive once more, you thanked him for helping you out. – “It was my pleasure Miss Featherington.” – he said with a bow, leaning down to kiss your hand. – “If you ever need saving again, simply call upon me.” – he continued after having kissed your hand.
You curtsied to him, taking your leave to return to your family content. – “Where have you been?” – mama questioned blinking surprised. You hummed soft, ignoring her question to come and join Prudence. Colin returned to his brothers with a sweat. Anthony stopped him by his shoulder.
“You are sweating dear brother.” – he pointed out. – “I…I… she was with another gentleman.” – he called out. – “Who was?” – Benedict asked curiously coming in sight, holding a pastry. Anthony inhaled deep, bringing Colin closer to him. – “It is not too late brother.” – patting his brother on the chest.
