Type of the Times: A Journal of the Writing and Spelling Reform vol. 11 (1858) by the Longley Brothers

Spelling reformists seek to standardize spelling and orthography to make learning written language easier. Although there have been English language reformists for centuries, spelling reform as a movement grew in popularity in 1800s United States. Reformists of this era include Noah Webster of Merriam-Webster fame, who developed an early American English dictionary, and Isaac Pitman, who developed the Pitman Shorthand for writing efficiently in English.

Type of the Times was a newspaper in Cincinnati, Ohio, during the mid-1800s that advocated for a spelling reform that used Cincinnati Phonotypy, an alphabet based on English phonemes. Elias Longley, the publisher, believed that a standardized orthography would increase written literacy and lead to a more democratic society. In addition to advocating for spelling reform, Type of the Times published articles on education, abolition, women's suffrage, and other reformist topics.

Type of the Times was published in a mix of traditional English orthography and Cincinnati Phonotypy. A sample of articles in the phonotype are included below. Can you read them?

Typography Tuesday

The English spelling reformer and developer of the Pitman shorthand method, Sir Isaac Pitman (1813-1897), published the The Ipswich Phono-Press from August 1845 to December 1846. It was the first periodical to be produced by  anastatic printing, a relief etching process for making facsimiles that was a forerunner of photocopying. The journal not only includes applications of Pitman’s shorthand method, Fonetic long-hand, and a phonographic dictionary of the English language, but it also displays his Fonetic font. It sure makes for interesting reading! On the verso of the title page there is even an apologetic explanation, in Fonetic type, of why the title page is not printed in that font: “The new letters not being yet added to the font employed on the title page of this work, it is, as a matter of necessity, printed in heterotypy” (we have never heard of that last word).

Pitman also developed the first distance education course in the 1840s via mail correspondence, made possible by the recent introduction of uniform postage rates in England. The Ipswich Phono-Press formed a part of that educational agenda and included the best methods of writing common words, specimens of phonography, poetry and miscellaneous literature, local information, notices of scientific discoveries, correspondence, etc. Pitman also published several other phonographic journals in the 1840s, including The Phonographic Journal, The Phonotypic Journal, Ae Fonotipic Jurnal, and the Fonografic Corispondunt, which are also held in UWM Speshul Colecshunz.

Dario Sansone dei Foja incontra il cantautore canadese Shaun Ferguson

Ebbri ancora del successo dello strepitoso live party tenutosi il 29 dicembre scorso a Napoli dopo un lungo tour europeo di nove tappe – i Foja, guidati da Dario Sansone (nella foto sotto), continuano a fare ricerca e a tessere la rete di collaborazioni internazionali puntando a fondere la cultura napoletana con quella di altri popoli.Dopo l’esperienza con gli spagnoli  La Pegatina, quella francese con  Pauline Croze e l’ultima con gli statunitensi  BlackNoyze, la band partenopea ospiterà a Napoli il giovane e talentuoso artista canadese Shaun Ferguson, virtuoso della chitarra e singer-songwriter raffinato, molto apprezzato nel circuito blues e world music. Il 13 febbraio presso i prestigiosi studi dell’Auditorium 900, ovvero la storica Phonotype Records situata nel cuore della città, i Foja e Shaun Ferguson rivisiteranno e incideranno il brano “Tutt’e duje”.Sansone e l’artista canadese coglieranno anche l’occasione di esibirsi per la prima volta insieme dal vivo.Il 14 febbraio, giorno di San Valentino, alle ore 19.00, in un luogo segreto del Centro Storico, si terrà il “Secret Love Show”:

Shaun Ferguson (nella foto sotto), è un chitarrista e compositore canadese che, attraverso la sua musica strumentale moderna, libera e trascendente, affascina il pubblico con canzoni che incantano. Nato e cresciuto nella penisola di Acadian, nel nord-est del New Brunswick, ha navigato ed esplorato vari campi musicali per quasi vent’anni. Ha pubblicato due album, “Résilience” nel dicembre 2017, mentre la sua prima opera, “Ascensions” risale al 2011.Autodidatta ha sempre fatto affidamento sul suo istinto imparando a suonare, comporre ed esplorare diverse forme musicali che armonizza con le sue visioni musicali. Attraverso varie collaborazioni artistiche è stato in grado di trasferire le sue abilità di chitarrista a molti altri strumenti a corda, ovvero il violoncello e il basso, nonché vari strumenti a percussione.
