Maybe I should wait for the PDF, but I’ve been thinking about password managers lately and might forget to check for that. My problem is that if there’s one thing I want to never ever put on the cloud to potentially get compromised, it’s my password information. But if there’s one thing I don’t want to lose access to, it’s also my password information. This seems to rule out both local options like KeePassXC and remote ones like Bitwarden.
I've started to become somewhat annoyed by the "there is no cloud, there is only someone else's computer" thing (this is a general thing, not specifically directed at you but you reminded me of it).
The risks of putting things on the cloud are that the internet or the provider will go down and you'll lose access to your data OR that the data will be compromised because the information is essentially public because it's on someone else's device.
Losing access because the provider crashes and burns or because there is a global internet outage is a distinct possibility, however with most password managers it is very very easy to download a copy of your data, which you can then store as an encrypted file on your desktop.
With companies like Bitwarden and Proton, which have open source encrypted cloud storage, your risk of compromise from being on someone else's computer is essentially zero. It IS important to make sure that you're finding a provider who is actually encrypting your shit and is not holding onto your password, which is why Bitwarden and Proton are the providers I keep recommending (privacyguides.org has recommendations here; bitwarden, protonpass, and keepassxc are all on the list, all of these are extremely safe options).
And that's where I have the problem with the "other people's computer" thing. I would have zero problems with storing a properly encrypted file in the comments of a facebook page. If a document had good encryption I would post it on livejournal and not worry about people getting into it. If you are working with good encryption, there is zero risk of compromise when keeping your shit on someone else's computer.
So I actually think the solution for either side of this conundrum is the same: If you're worried about losing access to your password manager because a service shuts down or the internet blows up, download a copy of your data to your desktop and store it in an encrypted folder on your computer. If you're worried about losing access to your password manager if your physical hardware is damaged in a disaster, export a copy of your data, save it as an encrypted file, and upload your encrypted file to gmail for all it matters - they will straight up not be able to get into it.
But that's also all kind of beside the point because a major feather in Bitwarden's cap is that you can self-host. It doesn't need to go on someone else's cloud, you can put it on your own server and never worry that someone else is going to tinker with your password manager.
Either way, you are sort of worrying beyond your means because if you're not using a password manager right now you are almost certainly at greater risk of credential stuffing attacks than anything else and need to put out that fire.

How to Make an EDC that Actually Works for You

So often, I look at people's EDCs (everyday carries) and think 'OK, but there's no way you're gonna use all of that'. Because, to be honest, I wouldn't use 3/4 of the stuff that's in these videos. But I do prefer to go out knowing I won't need need anything I don't have, so there's a happy medium. Here's how I worked out mine, and how you can too!
1. Data collection
First, go out with only what you absolutely need (clothes, shoes) and a pen and paper. If it would be dangerous or impossibly impractical for you to go without something, that's a need and will definitely be in your EDC. Note that something that feels necessary and something that is necessary are two separate things. Anyway, every time you need something or use any extras you've taken with you, write down the need (i.e. instead of 'phone' write 'entertainment'/ 'communication', instead of 'taser'/'knife' write 'safety'). If it's already on your list, write it again. Do this for a week, going about things the way you always do.
2. Data analysis
Look at your list. The things you wrote down the most often are the things you really need to prioritise in terms of quality and convenience. Highlight or put a circle around those. Then, for each need, list out all the different ways to meet that need, and the pros and cons of each. For example:
ENTERTAINMENT (EARS) • phone - pros: has lots of other uses, spotify / cons: distracting, yet another screen (ick), uses up data • walkman - pros: not as distracting, old timey charm, no internet or data usage / cons: requires cassettes, can only play one at a time • mp3 player - pros: not as distracting, can put anything on there, no internet or data usage / cons: i have to put songs on beforehand
In this instance, an MP3 player seems like the best option for me. Your list might be different. Do this for every need you had. Make sure everything you list out is something you either already have or can get easily, and that every option is legal where you live.
3. Data analysis pt. 2
You should have a bunch of lists now. Are there any that can be combined? Let's say I have a need for music and communication and the internet. That MP3 player's not looking as good as the phone right now, is it? But just because it can be combined, doesn't mean it should be. If I really wanted to save on data and the Spotify subscription, I could have a phone with the internet and the MP3 player. I can't make that kind of decision for you, just go based on what feels right.
4. Filling in the gaps
Now, I want you to think of scenarios that you have found yourself in at least 3 times, but not during your data collection week. Maybe you've unexpectedly gotten your period, or someone threatened you in some way, or you got someone's number and had no way to write it down. Think of solutions for those things too. Again: legal, practical, acquirable solutions.
5. Assembly
This is the fun part: time to get your EDC together! You can have multiple depending on the situation, but your core EDC should remain the same. This is made up of the solutions to your highlighted or circled needs, plus anything that's small enough that it's worth taking with you.
My circled problems: recording information and ideas, telling the time, entertainment (ears), entertainment (eyes/brain), payment, proof of identity, physical support, vision, getting into the house, hydration, cooling down, COVID safety, extra storage, peace of mind
My core EDC: notebook and pen/cil, watch, MP3 player and in-ear headphones, small book or e reader, wallet, forearm crutch, glasses, keys, small water bottle, hand fan, mask, hand sanitiser, a foldable shopping bag, small emergency kit*, a keychain torch (with a strobe setting for self defence)
If you've noticed that I didn't mention my phone, that's because my SIM card is broken so it's useless outside of playing downloaded music. It's also just nice, you know? I only bring it if I'm going somewhere further away than I usually go, and when it's fixed I'll probably still do that.
*lip balm, liquid IV and a werther's original, 3 each of the meds I need need, a bit of money, a band aid, 2 pimple patches.
6. Storage
Every outfit (including bags) you wear outside the house should be able to hold, at the very least, your core EDC and anything else you need for that particular outing. Since I carry a lot in my pockets, I store everything in a set place when I'm at home so I don't lose things. I keep them in my bedroom, where I get dressed, but you can put them by the front door if you live alone. If you use the same bag every time, don't bother.

You might do all of that just to realise you don't actually need to change anything about what you carry. If so, sorry! But if not, you'll either get stuck in bad situations way less often or have more space for what actually matters. Happy travelling!

why do you think neuron flies have to move so much, it seems like a waste of energy
It does seem wasteful, but I can think of a few possible reasons.
One possibility is that part of the computations performed by the neuron flies are encoded in their relative positions and velocities, similarly to how the shape of a slime mold can encode a solution to a mathematical problem. In particular, the neuron flies might be implementing a form of particle swarm optimization, collectively computing the solution to an optimization problem by adjusting their relative positions in accordance with common knowledge and a simple set of rules.
Furthermore, Moon states that she will die if Slugcat eats or leaves with the neuron flies in her chamber. This suggests that the range of neuron flies' communications is relatively limited. This could be due to their small size, or, if the storage capacity of individual neuron flies is high enough, long-range communications might simply not be worth it: in zero-g, it might require less energy to physically move a neuron fly across a long distance than it would to transmit all the data it contains across the same gap. In that case, neuron flies' constant motion could be a way to ensure that each one spends at least some of its time within range of all the various organisms and machines that need access to the information on it. If this information is exchanged mainly in short bursts, relatively few roaming neuron flies could provide access throughout a volume of space, compared to the number that would be required in a stationary arrangement. Also, if my replication theory is true, mixing up the population of neuron flies through motion would increase the speed at which new data spreads throughout an Iterator's structure, and reduce the likelihood of data loss if something were to happen to all the neuron flies in a particular location.

Spintronics, or spin electronics, is a revolutionary new field in condensed-matter physics that can increase the memory and logic processing capability of nano-electronic devices while reducing power consumption and production costs. This is accomplished by using inexpensive materials and the magnetic properties of an electron's spin to perform memory and logic functions instead of using the flow of electron charge used in typical electronics. New work by Florida State University scientists is propelling spintronics research forward.

Scientists develop neural networks to enhance spectral data compression efficiency for new vacuum solar telescope
Researchers from the Yunnan Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Southwest Forestry University have developed an advanced neural network-based method to improve the compression of spectral data from the New Vacuum Solar Telescope (NVST).
Published in Solar Physics, this technique addresses challenges in data storage and transmission for high-resolution solar observations.
The NVST produces vast amounts of spectral data, creating significant storage and transmission burdens. Traditional compression techniques, such as principal component analysis (PCA), achieved modest compression ratios (~30) but often introduced distortions in reconstructed data, limiting their utility.
To overcome these limitations, the researchers implemented a deep learning approach using a Convolutional Variational Autoencoder (VAE) for compressing Ca II (8542 Å) spectral data.
Their method achieves a compression ratio of up to 107 while preserving data integrity. Crucially, the decompressed data maintains errors within the inherent noise level of the original observations, ensuring scientific reliability. At the highest compression ratio, Doppler velocity errors remain below 5 km/s—a threshold critical for accurate solar physics analysis.
This breakthrough enables more efficient NVST data transmission and sharing while providing a scalable solution for other solar observatories facing similar challenges. Enhanced data compression facilitates broader scientific collaboration and reduces infrastructure constraints.

But I’m going to make a further assertion, definitely open to debate: I think our culture hasn’t recovered from microscopes. And that was over three centuries ago.
For all but a fraction of human history, we’ve been limited to our individual senses. The Mark I eyeball, as those tech-inclined have been known to quip. For all its flaws that is a spectacular piece of bio-engineering, able to pick out a decent chunk of the light spectrum and resolve it in enough detail to allow fairly accurate prey/predator/edible plant distinctions, notice hazardous environmental conditions (the cliff face about to crumble underfoot) and even navigate in extremely low-light conditions. In the past about 5,000 years, we’ve even hacked its software to allow encoding and reading data storage in a way no other species has managed. We can literally read words set down by the scribes of ancient Egypt, or China, or the Hittite Empire, or a thousand other cultures almost nobody knows about.
(With luck, the wits of Tumbler will drag Ea-nasir’s lousy copper-selling name into the next century and beyond!)
Yet while learning to read could be difficult, it was still your eyes against everybody else’s for what was real. If someone wrote about a mountain and you went and saw it was a molehill, you knew what to believe.
The microscope is a whole different look at the problem. Pun intended. With microscopic lenses in play, those with the time and money could delve into parts of the world no one even knew existed before.
And those without that time and money couldn’t cross-check them. Couldn’t submit the evidence of their own eyes, because the naked eye can’t pick out microscopic hairs on an ant, or the honeycomb of wood cells, or amoeboid “animalcules” gliding through pond-water like sharks to engulf and devour other cells.
(I think there’s reasons these kinds of shapes and textures keep showing up in horror movies. To our unaided eye, they are Things That Should Not Be.)
Microscopes, and the devices that came after, broadened the divide between those with the time to sit and study and those doing the physical work of keeping civilization running by digging ditches and running sewer pipes.
(If you love civilization, respect everyone who deals with plumbing. Without clean running water and safe waste disposal, most of us would be dying or ill every day.)
If you can’t check someone’s work, if you can’t see with your own eyes what they’re talking about, then you have to take it on faith that they’re not lying to you. And that is a terrible position to be in, because humans will lie to you. Some with malice, but many more with pure wishful thinking. There are reasons we developed the scientific method and statistics - among them, to try and weed out as much wishful thinking as possible. Nothing weeds out lying except catching someone in the act. And if you can’t check that yourself... again, you have to rely on other people to catch the liars. Other people educated in that field, who may feel a good old-fashioned tribal instinct to defend us against them, even when one of their own is obviously lying.
I don’t have a good solution. All I can suggest is that people spread what they think they know as widely as possible, so someone can try to check if it’s really so. And always remember people want to see the truth with their own eyes. See if you can make it happen!

Hello! Just a small question. In my work there is a "base", located underground. The main characters need to destroy the base, but it is protected against fire. I decided they would flood the base by bursting the pipes and flooding the place, but the logistics are a bit confusing for me. Tex: Fire protection is a bit of a relative term - do you mean to say that there is nothing flammable there? Or that there would be nothing that could start a fire, such as electrical wiring? The same sort of process applies to water systems such as pipes, cisterns, etc. Water pipes generally have lots of checks and balances in the form of things pressure valves, water storage units, and drains. A pipe “bursts��� when the internal pressure is unable to be vented (i.e. has nowhere to go), and the inability to equalize pressure to its mechanical standards (i.e. material properties of the pipe itself). Engineers like to design infrastructure systems around some general principles: 1) as close to within budget as possible (i.e. materials, manpower, schedule), 2) easy to spot problems during construction, and 3) easy to repair after its installation in case something breaks. To accomplish this, particularly with water and electrical systems, these systems will be designed with as many straight lines as possible in order to reduce the logistical burdens of its installation, maintenance, and repair. It won’t be uncommon to align multiple systems alongside each other along a wall or in a floor, especially if the employees are paid by the hour, but it might or might not be the absolute best way to do it in terms of long-term solutions. Addy: Water pressure is pretty neat stuff, and I like where you're going with this. My thoughts are a little scattered, but this is feasible or not depending on where the base is.
Components to flooding: 1) How much water is there? 2) Where does the water come from? 3) How quickly does it spread? 4) What does it damage?
So you want to "ruin" a base. That could mean 
making it completely inoperable and essentially impossible to recover (totally flooded, it becomes an underground swimming pool/death cave, cannot access without specialized diving equipment).
making it unusable for practical purposes and/or health & safety reasons. Everything of value (papers, records, documents, computers) is made useless and soft surfaces are covered in mold, but a person can still physically enter the space and breathe oxygen. There was water, but then it receded.
In this case, the space is still physically accessible, but the cleanup cost isn't worth it. A dedicated crew may later try to see if there are any documents that got left behind, which could be interesting
Either way, the goal is to remove the enemy's capability to continue operations in this area by damaging their base of operations to an extent that the base is no longer worth the resources to upkeep. Or to damage it to an extent that it is unable to be re-established.
Does it flood quickly or slowly? That affects the speed of the response.
If it happens quickly, the timescale is measured in minutes. Maybe a few hours, if it's a large base. Evacuation is fast, dramatic, and desperate. A few people may try to secure strategic assets (experimental weapon, research notes, hard drive with special data on it, spellbook, classified documents, religious artifacts, medicine, etc. Things that are not easily replaceable), and others may just grab whatever's closest to them and run. Evacuation could be coordinated or it could be disorganized. There may be rescue efforts, people going back to check on their colleagues.
If the flooding is fast-then-slow, then the timescale is hours, maybe a day or two. Initial response is likely going to be panicky, but with people going back inside to grab things once they realize they've got some time.
If the flooding is slow, it's like the above but more like a school fire drill. There's time and not much panic. Not very dramatic. However! If they're leaking a sewer line, then you get people leaving very quickly indeed, as nobody likes to be in contact with raw sewage.
How much water do you need? (If it isn't very much, then people don't panic as much, as they're not at risk of dying)
If you're just looking to fry electronics, that's easy. A few inches of water and there you go, you've ruined your servers and your electrical lines and it's a whole mess. Also it'll get into the floorboards, and that's an expensive fix…. Especially if the water stays electrified. Or if there's sewage or other unpleasant substances in it. Anyways, even a small(ish) pipe can carry a lot of water. A 4" pipe can carry 3400 gallons per minute (gpm) - enough to put a 20,000 sqft facility under a foot of water in 20 minutes. A large 48" pipe, on the other hand, can carry ~35,000 gpm under typical conditions - enough to put that same facility under a foot of water every four and a half minutes. 
For reference, fire hydrants put out about 500-1000 gpm. Major pipes tend to be located under streets and highways (hard for them to get accidentally damaged that way), with smaller distribution pipes going to wherever they may be needed. If the base is in the middle of nowhere, they probably won't be near any of the big pipes, so you'd have fairly slow flooding. If the base is hidden in a city, you've got roadways right there. Bonus points if the soil is sand (makes the pipes easier to get to to break).

So if you've got a major pipe running through the area, you can make things happen very, very fast. Even if you don't have the really big pipes, you can still cause a fair amount of damage by just breaking multiple pipes. It really just depends on the area and what kinds of pipes are nearby. In normal real-life conditions, large pipes tend to be hard to get to, and it'd be more practical to break a few 1" or 2" pipes, which could get you a foot or two of water in a couple hours.
You could drain a lake or reservoir, but it'd have to be fairly large in order to actually fill up the volume of the base.
How quickly the water spreads depends on the layout of the building. If there are multiple stories, water will flow down. Closed doors will slow the water down, but won't stop it entirely (unless they're waterproof and designed to resist large sideways forces). Think of it like spilling water on a table, just with a lot more of it.
What gets damaged? Are there any fuel lines, any natural gas attachments? What about liquor? Is there anything flammable that can catch fire and float on top of the water? (Or anything that can break, catch fire, and explode inside the base?) Do you have electronics? Paper? How tough are your floors? Water is heavy, clocking in at 62.4 lb/ft^3 (structural engineers hate rooftop pools). Is there a risk of upper floors collapsing onto lower floors, as the water pours down?

Yo, I legit want to hear your data disk theory bc I was kinda thinking the same thing? Except I figured that if they really are magnetic hard disks then they'd be even more fragile than DVDs/CDs since even a stray magnet could screw up all the data? I am but a lowly software person so I don't exactly how storage mediums work all too much lol. Also, if the old world was really DA FUTURE(tm), wouldn't their computer storage be more in SSDs than HDDs? There might be an economic reason to stick with HDDs but if their computing tech was at the level of sentient AIs and stuff they hypothetically would have the faster, more compact storage in those...
Reminds me of the deep dive I did to figure why the hell telegraphs in the My Time world are called telegraphs if they're supposedly wireless (short answer: it's probably primitive radio? i have no idea how the hell transmissions can work at distances up to cross-country tho)
Oh boy, I'm so glad you asked! I've done IT infrastructure repair work for a couple years now, and my last job actually had me working with a lot of storage servers in particular for the latter half of my job, so I have Opinions(tm) on this small detail lol. And those are all really good questions too. And hopefully I don't get too technical trying to answer it, but I make no promises (and it's DEFINITELY going to be long and rambly so bear with me)
So starting with it being The Future(tm), there are pros and cons to going HDD versus SSD versus NVMe today, but did you know that not only is tape storage still in use, but it's actually still considered a modern, practical solution to archival storage with the technology still being upgraded and developed, even right now in 2023? Archival in this case being the sort of data you need to hold onto for 20, 30, 40 years or more without a constant need to have read/write access to that data. The tape servers have a cool robot arm in them and everything to move the tape cassettes around. A lot of this technology isn't actually aging out because it has its niche, it's just being modernized to settle it more in that niche
So with HDDs versus SSDs, they are becoming fairly comparable to each other today, HDD was winning out for a long time because SSD was a lot more expensive to get ahold of at the same storage capacity as HDD. That's great from a regular end-user perspective because you can get that upgrade more practically and reap the benefits of not having to rely on physical moving parts to access your data. Swapping it out on a server level is going to be a much larger and more expensive project, though, without seeing a lot of additional benefit for going that direction. A lot of the benefits that you would see for swapping to SSD on a regular computer have already been accounted for in existing server designs for a while now, in the form of RAID technology (Redundant Array of Independent/Inexpensive Disks; fancy way of saying "get a bunch of drives to take on the work of one drive and then replace any drives that break along the way"; being able to share the data load across multiple drives improves efficiency and then you can also replace broken disks on the fly without having to worry about the integrity of the overall storage system as long as you don't sit on too many dead disks for too long)
Not to say that SSDs won't still overtake HDD eventually, as new servers are installed in datacenters and closets, they're increasingly having SSD as the supported format, but there's not a good enough benefit to rush through fading out HDD at the moment when they're still about comparable to each other and the weaknesses have largely been accounted for. And even then, there are always going to be legacy servers that get passed up for upgrades either because nobody sees a need or it's too important to the overall infrastructure or any number of reasons, at which point they're still almost definitely going to be sticking with HDDs even in The Future
So that's the long-winded justification for why I think it's plausible that there would still be large enough quantities of HDDs kicking around even in the future for them to end up in ruins of that future
As for the justification of how you'd be able to get enough usable data off of them given the notorious fragility of those disks, I chalk it up to a matter of quantity. When I was installing brand-new storage servers for a customer, one drawer could hold up to around a hundred hard drives, and there were often four or five drawers slated for install with one server. If you figure that your average HDD has about three to six platters, multiply that by 100, and then multiply that by the drawers, and then the number of identical hardware setups that are also set up around it, and that number just keeps going up by orders of magnitude. Most of those platters are absolutely going to be shattered or wiped or otherwise damaged in a way that renders them useless, and the percentage that make it out in-tact enough is going to be very small. But if you take a very small percentage of the ridiculously large number of platters you can expect to find in a datacenter (even the smaller ones) is still going to give you the chance of finding enough usable platters that you can pull something off of them. Like, we're talking millions or billions of platters just in one place, if you take .01% or .001% or even .0001% of that kind of number as your chances of finding something in tact you're still looking at a fairly decent pool of workable salvage to sort through*
(*In theory, anyway; in practice, you usually need all the platters that are associated with an HDD to be able to put the data together into something usable given the way data's distributed across them...not that it's impossible to grab information off of a single platter but it would take A LOT of extra work to figure out how to reverse engineer it into working versus having the full set. It could still be possible but that factor drags the already small percentage down even further. But then, I would be surprised if Pathea has given it NEARLY as much thought as this, so after a certain point, there's kinda just the shrugging to say "video game logic" lol...but before reaching that point I'm going to have my fun spending way too much time trying to figure out how it *could* work)
With the quantity argument, as well, you're also way more likely to see that kind of overabundance of HDD than you would DVDs or CDs; DVDs just aren't scalable in the same way, both in terms of the amount of data they can store and the amount of read/write flexibility they have. You're also a lot less likely to find the sort of information on a DVD that you would find in a storage server; DVDs are more useful for executable programs than they are for data storage, and even that purpose is superceded by a usb thumb drive a lot of the time. There wouldn't be nearly as many to account for in an apocalypse situation and that means the statistics are going to hit them much harder
Anyway, yeah, that's my nerdy ass supposition for this headcanon, thanks again for giving me an excuse to ramble on about it and I hope it makes sense lol

Do I appreciate that these exist so that I can preserve my shiny lopunny from 15 years ago? yes. Am I confident in these things being accessible long-term so that my shiny lopunny's data isnt yeeted off this mortal coil when Home and Bank are both totally defunct? absolutely not. Especially not with access to storage being locked behind a paywall and the fact that Bank is already obsolete despite being launched as a "forever" storage solution. I'm really close to just jail breaking my older DS so I can make my own physical backups of game data and pokemon.
