Reposted from @birthuprising At birth, ⅓ (or more) of your baby’s blood is still in the placenta. That means if you immediately cut the cord, your baby is missing A LOT of blood. If you were missing ⅓ (33%) of your blood, your heart and respiratory rates would increase, your blood pressure would drop, and you would become anxious and confused. If you lost 40% of your blood, all those symptoms would be worse and you would become lethargic. If you lost more than 40% you would die. So how long should you wait after birth to clamp the cord? Ideally you would “wait for white”. This means the cord isn’t clamped until it has stopped pulsing and turned white because all of the blood is now inside the baby. This is usually over 5 minutes (I’ve waited until the birth of the placenta with my two homebirths [about an hour]). But delaying cord clamping for even 60 seconds has been shown to have benefits including: 🔆 Increased hemoglobin 🔆 Increased iron 🔆 Increased blood pressure (early clamping means BP can be too low) 🔆 Increased urinary output 🔆 Increased body temperature (early clamping babies are colder) If baby is having a slower transition to breathing outside the womb upon their birth, keeping them attached to the cord will also continue to provide them with oxygen until they begin breathing on their own. Did you delay cord clamping with your babies? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #birthfacts #delayedcordclamping #dcc #waitforwhite #cordclamping #umbilicalcord #evidencebasedpractice #bornathome #newborn #nicu #nicubaby #nicumom #hospitalbirth #healthybaby #physiology #physiologicalbirth #postpartum #newbaby #newmom #birthplan #birthoptions #birthmatters #knowyouroptions https://www.instagram.com/p/CYic4d3LcOl/?utm_medium=tumblr

What do you do when you are about to turn 41? Well, drag your entire family to London for a weekend with a true legend, pioneer, futurist par excellence. Michel Odent at more than twice my age has a mind that’s enviable in its breath of synthesis of ideas, capacity for originality and experience in birth that spans more than half a century. A true turning point for my learning journey. . . . #birth #physiologicalbirth #undisturbedbirth #doula #birthdoula #doulalife #london #mother #pregnancy #mummyyoga (at Kentish Town) https://www.instagram.com/mummyyoga/p/Bv4wJj8HUIM/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1hofy7g3pwh56

"Everything was fast but the power, control, and warrior I saw in my wife as she roared our second daughter earthside, was the most powerful thing I've ever witnessed. In that moment I saw a whole new woman. I saw someone I had never seen in my wife; I saw a warrior fighting, I saw a mother giving her all, I saw the love of my life in more pain than the human body can take, and she took it with grace. She proudly took the pain, blood, sweat, and tears, as another contraction brought our baby one step closer to us. If I never appreciate anything else about freebirth, I will forever appreciate seeing my wife in a whole new role and seeing her for who she is at her core: one badass birther." Did you have dilation checks during labor? Much like Due Dates, cervical exams are GUESSES at best... "Some studies have used hard cervical models in which the cervix is fixed in position to measure the accuracy of midwives and obstetricians in measuring cervical dilatation. They reported an overall accuracy for determining the exact cervical diameter of between 48.6% and 56.3% which improved to between 89.5% and 91.7% when an error of ± 1 cm was allowed. Both studies noted that the accuracy of the examination decreased as cervical dilatation increased. A recent study which utilised more realistic soft cervical models found that only 19% of cervical dilatation measurements were accurate." Source: The purple line as a measure of labour progress: a longitudinal study (Ashley Shepherd, Helen Cheyne, Susan Kennedy, Colette McIntosh, Maggie Styles and Catherine Niven) To learn about the MANY other signs of dilation and movement towards birth, check out "Understanding and assessing labour progress" by Dr Rachel Reed at midwifethinking.com. #pregnancylife #empoweredbirth #laboranddelivery #dilation #evidencebasedcare #physiologicalbirth #nashvilledoula #birthoptions

Be 100% relaxed. Everything around you and inside you needs to support your capability to absolutely relax. Relaxation is the most important factor in childBirth. I said this already and I'll say it again and again. Prepare, train yourself to relax. Know how to relax. Know what it takes to relax you. If you do just this, it will give you an advantage you will know you had only if you do it. If nothing else do just this. Relax. No matter what is going on. You will thank yourself later. #willmafied #birth #childbirth #naturalbirth #physiologicalbirth #fastandeasybirth #relax #prepare #mostimportant https://www.instagram.com/p/Bngf-X_lOSo/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1s5ezgi0vbl4

lithotomy position, supine position or "lying on your back" in any inclination is not safe in childBirth. A woman free from modern society influence will not choose "lying on your back" position for pushing the baby out. It's not natural. It's not safe. It increases the need of episiotomy, it creates higher risk for perineal tear, higher risk for internal and external tissue injury, higher risk for pelvis injury, longer pushing stage, pushing against gravity... Feel your body, listen to your body, let it guide you. Let it instinctually guide you to go into a good position that you and your baby need, that you and your baby have chosen for this birth, for safe pushing stage. #willmafied #naturalbirth #physiologicalbirth #notonmyback #birth #childbirth https://www.instagram.com/p/BnlsO38FKF4/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1l37ynfhp63t3
