The night before the eve of the final battle, Xa'rok finally convinces the Emperor to sleep.

"You'll need your strength," they argued until they're, well. They've always been blue in the face. Though they were a little more purple these days.

We can't afford to lose focus. The Emperor was stubborn, this line a bulwark against the vulnerability of letting down its guard so close to the end.

"You don't have to lose it. Just focus it on something else for a little while. Say, four hours? Six? Eight?" The last was a hopeful addition Xa'rok had no hope it would yield to. But the Emperor surprised them by sighing - a full-body movement that rolled through its shoulders and twitched its tentacles on the way down. And then it said, forceful, final:

Fine. Three hours. No more. No less. And you-- what are you doing?

Xa'rok had arranged themself on the stone bench that had occupied this space since they had first been summoned here, long ago, in a dream. They glanced at the Emperor and smiled, with teeth.

"Getting comfortable. Three hours is a long time to sit still." They pat one of their knees invitingly, shifting the drape of their shimmering robe to obscure the jut of their bony legs and create somewhat more comfortable pillow. "You didn't think I was going anywhere, did you? Someone's got to watch over the Prince."

Before the Emperor's emotions had a chance to heighten, they added, quicksilver and daring, "I left the Hammer in Hell where it belongs." An open invitation to read their mind as it had before. "Just relax. Sleep." Their mouth quirked up at the corner. "You'll feel better. I promise."

The Emperor slept.

Souls on the Bank of the Acheron by Adolf Hirémy-Hirschl is one of my favorite paintings in the world by one of my favorite artists, and YunHa did an amazing job with their version of it.
