Harbin Ice-Crisp 哈尔滨冰爽
It’s been a while since I’ve had a Harbin beer, and after drinking this guy I remember why I’ve chosen to avoid them. 我很长时间没喝哈尔滨啤酒,喝完了就记得为什么原来选择了不平常喝。
The beer has all the characteristics of a basic domestic, but left a weird taste in my mouth after. After getting about halfway through it, I forgot about the aftertaste and had a nice Saturday playing dnd. It’s an okay easy-drinking beer if you don’t have a better choice. 这个啤酒跟别的国内啤酒也差不多,但喝了一口之后感觉嘴里怪怪的味道。喝了一半,没注意这奇怪的味道,感觉还是享受的一个周六。没有别的选择的话,它还行。

I don't know if you're the right person to ask, but one thing has been bothering me in the untamed - namely, the alcohol. Google says that traditional Chinese alcohol is baijiu. Ok, cool. But it also says it's, like, 60% alcohol?? I'm from Poland and I'm familiar with stronger alcohols (vodka), but even vodka is like, 45%! And the cups they were drinking from in cql are not the smallest ones, either. [1/2]

OH GOD NO THEY’RE NOT DOING BAIJIU SHOTS but that would explain some of the sheer stupidity of some of the characters seriously
okay so there’s definitely more than one kind of ‘traditional Chinese alcohol’ -- you’ve got your rice wines, your millet wines, your various fruit-based wines, all of which live peacefully in the 12-40 proof range. Baijiu is a specific kind of spirit, usually hella distilled, and usually out to Fuck You Up
No seriously, there are special shot glasses for baijiu that are half the size of a normal shot glass because this shit is usually in the 50-120 proof range and will burn if you set it on fire
(what do you mean, 'that’s awfully specific?’ You mean you haven’t lit a shot of baijiu on fire and poured it into a metal sink? Listen, you get all sorts of fun ideas after a few shots of 五粮液 wuliangye)
what’s being translated as ‘wine’ in the subtitles is probably 酒 jiu, which refers to any alcoholic drink, not just baijiu -- 葡萄酒 putaojiu refers to grape wines; 啤酒 pijiu refers to beer. One of the translations I’ve seen for the poem 《将进酒》Qiangjingjiu (which I translated in this post) is “Bring in the Ale,” which translates 酒 jiu as ‘ale’ instead of ‘wine.’ See? Already much less alcoholic. Everyone’s livers can breath a sigh of relief.

A Love Letter To Shanghai
All the artworks created by the Liu Dao Art Collective showcase a unique relationship between the old and the new. Each is accompanied by an interesting story or holds a special meaning, and "Stories on 9th" is no exception.
As artists working and living in Shanghai, the art collective notices changes and finds inspiration in the least expected. From hanging dry meat or clothes on the streets, to the tradition of wearing red underwear on your Chinese zodiac year...The artists are constantly fascinated by differences in cultures and traditions. The story behind the painting "Stories on 9th", for example, is a local Shanghai street scene on Anqing Road in Jing'an district. The artists used to go shop at the beginning of that road to purchase ink and paper, which they used for creating silkscreens at the time.
A street market used to be there with shops selling all sorts of goods, such as 糖藕 "Tang Ou" (candied lotus root), 啤酒烤鸭 "Pijiu Kaoya" (roasted beer duck) and 猪头肉 "Zhu Tou Rou" (fresh pig head meat). They would hang the meat in front for passersby to see and cut the pieces according to customers' liking. If you grew up in the city, then you're familiar with Chinese graffti, which consists of satellite or TV repair services with phone numbers attached here and there all over the walls, and even advertisements for curing hair loss or any kind of disease! Because of the passage of time, the street is no longer how artists remember it, but with a little magic touch, the street scene is forever immortalized in this painting. It shows you how this city used to be, while also serving as a reminder of how it will always keep on changing. It is a love letter to Shanghai!

This is a very funny list -- especially when you think of the hypocrisy behind the criticism. As unhealthy as most American fast-food is, the world beyond the U.S. has a passion for it that makes fast-food corporations very rich. For instance, one of the first things my Chinese girlfriend (now wife) was excited to tell me was how much she and all her friends loved American fast-food -- especially KFC. This is from the communist People's Republic of China, which since Chairman Mao, had decades long condemnation of everything American. I was the one who had to (softly and kindly) object to the unhealthy aspects of such a diet. The only fast-food I had eaten for years was Pizza Hut pizza. The only rare occasions when I would eat fast-food would be when I was traveling somewhere and was forced to eat "on the run." And, in fact, the last visit I made to the drive through of a fast-food restaurant (Burger King), I got violently ill from some green spoiled french fries. The difference in beverage temperatures is well-known. Many non-U.S. (e.g. British or European) beers and wines taste far better when drunk at room temperatures. In China, one can see outdoor vendors selling "Ping Pijiu" (Iced Beer)... but there clearly is never any ice involved and you would be very lucky if the beer was even a degree less than room temperature/"luke warm". In my opinion, "American Cheese" is only good for three things: 1) Philly Cheesesteaks, 2) melted on top of hot apple pie, or eaten cold on apple slices, and 3) Cheeseburgers. True Philly Cheesesteaks and traditional Cheeseburgers require American Cheese. But other than these three uses, I can't think of anything else where American Cheese is actually a desired ingredient in a recipe.
