There are days when I go back to my roots of drawing extremely pretty men and elaborate outfits and jewelry.
"Pirates of Leviathan" is one of my favorite seasons of Dimension 20 - can you tell? "A Court of Fey and Flowers" is right up there with it. Can't get enough of it. I really hope the Bad Kids swing by Leviathan at some point again. Like, Garthy O'Brien was briefly mentioned in FHJY Adventuring Party Ep1, and I went FERAL. (I wanna know more about Ayda's relationship with Garthy! Embarrassing baby stories, general lore, I DON'T CARE.)
Needless to say, I adore Garthy O'Brien and Jack Brakkow. It was hilarious to watch Matt and Brennan flirt with each other. But even more than that, I love a good revenge/glow-up story, and Captain Brakkow had a great one.
(Image description under the cut!)
[Image description: Garthy O'Brien stands with Captain Jack Brakkow at their side, his hand on their left hip. They are gesturing off to the left, as if showing Jack the sights. Garthy, a half-orc aasimar with golden eyes, is wearing a plethora of intricately-made, gemstone-studded jewelry, comprised of: two upper arm bands, four bracelets, three rings, a choker, chandelier earrings, and an enormous Anatolian-style necklace that spans nearly from shoulder to shoulder. Jack Brakkow is a 7ft-tall ratfolk pirate captain wearing a loose, navy shirt, tan pants, and a teal captain's coat. There's a small silver charm of a crescent moon sickle hanging from his collar, marking him as the captain of the Harvest Moon. He also wears a golden belt buckle with mother-of-pearl inlay depicting a flower garden.

Art idea from @fuzzybeesknees
I’ve been reading all the lovely comments folks have left on my art - thank you for the kind words!! Having the drive to draw again has been amazing.
[Description: KP Hob wearing a loose fitting pirate shirt with a ruffled, laced collar surrounded by the other members of the Pack of Pixies. “DAMN I’m good! Nothing beats a ruffled, silk pirate shirt! Classic.” Binx looks very proud of herself. Rue swoons, and Andhera (with cloud of worry) runs to help. The cousins hoot and holler.]
BONUS: “Where Binx may have acquired an authentic silk pirate shirt.”
Tumblr media
[Description: a post-it note doodle of Garthy O’Brien from “Pirates of Leviathan” with a folded shirt in his arms. Off screen, Jack Brakkow calls: “Garthy my love, I think someone stole my shirt again.” “Not to worry darling! I’ll buy you a new one!” Binx’s hand pops up from a magic portal, “Hurry up!”]

Most underrated canon D20 ship is Jack Brakkow and Garthy O'Brien. Gimme more of the sad hunky rat man getting pampered and supported by the most perfect creature to ever exist.
TBH just bring Pirates of Leviathan back to do that whole cast justice in the dome.

Hey @shakespearestolemyurl I made you a little something for the 2023 @d20exchange !
As a podficcer I thought you’d like something with a bit of an audio element, so I wrote you a song.
Or rather a song format.
You can listen and read along here on Ao3: Songs of the Celestine.
There’s a sneak peek under the cut. I hope you like it!
Excerpt from “A Bardic History of Leviathan”, taken from the Compass Points Library, with the approval of the Mistress of the Library, Ayda Aguefort.
A Brief History of the Songs
Songs of the Celestine makes tribute to the history and heroes of Leviathan in song form; the refrain calls for specific names—with each iteration, a different person is mentioned and sung about.
It is based on the structure of capstan shanties, which were used to establish a rhythm for ‘heaving’ work, which required endurance over longer periods. The singer repeats the chorus of the song in between improvised verses of varying lengths over a strong beat.
The song is typically used as a storytelling device and a word game of sorts, because all of the verses for a given story must end on a rhyme, as shown in the examples below. In particular, this song is sung in the Ramble, where different pirate bards and elders take up the tune to tell stories of pirate deeds and misdeeds. Anyone can improvise on the tune, but notorious pirates and sailors of Leviathan may have verses written about them–some of these are shared here.
Make no mistake, it is not a traditional sea shanty–it does not have a call and response element, nor is it slow enough to match the timing of work on a ship. However, it has a strong beat, a simple melody, and a basic chord progression in compound duple time (6/8) such that tales of varying lengths can be sung over top. There are many variations, but typically, the refrain is repeated after all the verses for a particular person are sung, in order to start anew with a different story.

Rating: Explicit Archive Warning: Major Character Death Fandom: Dimension 20: Pirates of Leviathan Relationship: Jack Brakkow/Garthy O'Brien
Summary: “Never really had to ask you for anything, did I?” Jack points out. “You just gave me everything I could ever want.”
Notes: You know how sometimes you're just going along, living your life, and suddenly a specific piece of media crosses your path and just clotheslines you, rewrites your brain, and leaves you stranded in an empty parking lot?
Yeah.
Will this make any sense if you haven't seen Pirates of Leviathan? No. Can you watch it without watching any other Dimension 20? Yes! Should you watch it? YES!
I'm pretty sure the entire fandom consists of five weirdos and two people from the show, but I'm coming in hot to make it weird.

Last art of 2023! And it's ANGST??
Why do I do this? It's finished, at least. I count that as a win. And I will say that I do have a happier Garthy/Jack piece that's almost done. I love them so much!
This is absolutely not canon - it started as pose practice with Captain Jack Brakkow, and then Garthy O'Brien got added to the mix. The story in my head goes that the Buccaneer Buddies got into a series of altercations with fiends who work for Grummsh-One-Eye.
In Pirates of Leviathan, Garthy is implied to possess celestial powers that formed as a counter-balance to Grummsh and his followers. On the grounds of the Gold Gardens, Garthy is incredibly powerful. The layout of the buildings form a religious rune that acts as the foundation of a Sanctum spell. (Pirates of Leviathan Episode 3, 1:55:30) (EDIT: That's confirmed in Sophomore Year - the whole Zajiri thing with the Orcish pantheon of gods. Garthy is a descendant of "risen devils" and is a kind of "holy succubi.")
So what happens if Garthy is caught off-guard while not on campus grounds?
(Image description below the cut!)
[Image description:
PANEL ONE: Garthy lies unconscious in Jack's arms, their face scuffed from a punch. A small cut on their left cheek bleeds golden ichor sluggishly. There are bags under their eyes, and remnants of golden tears along their face. Jack cradles Garthy's head in his large, clawed hand. Garthy's green skin is nearly devoid of color, a sheen of sweat along their brow, and the golden tattoos on their torso are dimmer than usual. Abrasions can be seen around Garthy's neck. Their face looks sunken, almost gaunt.
Jack, offscreen: Garthy?
PANEL TWO: Jack is a ratfolk pirate approximately 6 feet tall, with light brown fur and lighter gray-brown fur around his short beard and mustache. He kneels on an empty stretch of beach, the sun setting behind him and casting dark shadows. He supports the half-orc's slim body with his right arm, cradling their face with his left. The sky is orange, pink and dark purple. More abrasions are seen around Garthy's wrists and the tips of their fingers. There is surprisingly little blood, given Garthy's frighteningly pale complexion. Jack's gray eyes are wide and watery.
"...Garthy?"
