How To Be Brave was absolutely incredible!!! It’s in Llanelli’s Theatre Ffwrnes on 7th September at 3pm so if you’re free and around please go and see it! I laughed and I cried and got blown away by both Laura’s performance and the writing. It’s a fantastic show with a beautiful message AND it’s Welsh new writing. What made it even better is that I got to watch it with Mary Davies and her lovely mum, and got to catch up with Laura for a bit after the show. We hate the idea of losing control and not knowing what might come next. We like routine. We have habits that make us feel comfortable. Creative bravery is about embracing change. But when it does happen, it can deliver real magic. Something that all of our speakers have thankfully experienced in their career. #HOWTOBEBRAVE Invitation

My debut novel, HOW TO BE BRAVE, is about a girl who has lived her life in fear and who sets out to try new things, despite her insecurities. Before her death, her mom commanded Georgia to live differently—to try everything at least once and to never be ruled by fear.

Though the story is not autobiographical, much of it is “true” in the sense that it was written after a difficult period of my life. I lost my father when I was seventeen and my mother when I was thirty. After my mother passed away when my daughter was ten months old, I found myself sandwiched between the death of my best friend and the presence of this new life. It was a dark and confusing time – I wanted to drown in my grief but also knew I had to keep myself afloat for the sake of my new baby. That’s when I turned to writing.  On my darkest days, my husband would tell me to take time for myself – to go for walks, yoga, etc. – but more often than not, I would find myself at the library, writing. The act of writing was a way for me to work through my own grief and to also find new purpose my life.

HOW TO BE BRAVE specifically started as a thought experiment to see what my relationship with my dad would have been like had my mom died first. As I started writing, Georgia became her own character with her own struggles. Georgia also feels uncomfortable in her body that's deemed "overweight" by society's standards, and part of her storyline is that she finds confidence in her body, as it is – that losing weight does not equal being brave. This has been part of my storyline has well. 

Furthermore, as Georgia discovers, there are many different ways to live a life of courage – whether it be by skydiving or taking a trapeze class (numbers 3 and 4 on Georgia’s list), by learning how to draw or dancing to your heart’s wild content (numbers 6 and 10), or by reaching out to others in their time of need (not on the list, but equally important). 

Now that they book is making its way into the world, I’ve been thinking a lot about what it means to be brave, and how there are many different ways to live a life of courage. I’ve been writing and posting about how I try to face my own fears and my journey to understanding that fear is an essential part of bravery. I hope this book encourages readers to reflect on their own fears and to face life bravely.

As I tell my students, writing is one of the scariest - if not the most frightening - thing we can do. That's partly why I wanted to include a journal as part of the #HOWTOBEBRAVE giveaway, and I was thrilled to work with Hafsah of Icey Designs as part of this project. 

Indeed, we take our deepest thoughts and fears and hopes and dreams and questions, and we make them solid somehow, by putting them down as words on paper. Then, if we feel so compelled, we decide to share them with the world - to reach out to other humans to see if any one else out there thinks and feels and worries and hopes in somewhat the same way.
