ok so first of all- OH MY GOD YOUR ART IS AMAZING?? LIKE H O W second of all- what art program do you use? and also i’ve been trying to develop a style of my own for awhile and just c a n ‘ t so how did you do it,any tips?

Thank you so much!!! I use Procreate on my iPad because it has a lot of similar elements as/has file comparability with Photoshop. It has at least 50 changeable brushes to mess with too. It’s $9.99 on the App Store and worth every penny.

As for style? Honestly I’d recommend not worrying about style. I tend to go back and forth a lot in my art, leaning towards realism one minute and Art Deco the next.

Focus more on practicing the basics and techniques for illustration before thinking about style:

How to hold your pencil or pen: it’s good for your wrist to hold it halfway up and use broad strokes, rather than hold it like you’re using it to write.

what muscles to focus on keeping relaxed while drawing. You use a lot of your arm and shoulder while drawing, not just your hand. be sure to stretch before drawing to help avoid repentatuce stress injury. And learn to be ambidextrous!

Paper media affect how your art will look! When sketching, it’s good to work with charcoal and big pads of paper, to help promote broad shoulder movement. When creating finalized work, go to your local art store and ask a specialist on what type of media they recommend for the project you’re working on. (Dick Blick is a big chain found in most cities and towns, plus they have an online store)

Use References! It’s boring as hell, but it’ll help you in the long run. And you can always deviate from references if it doesn’t look right!

You can find lots of virtual figure study courses online (pixellovely is my fav because it also offers animal references, hands, and facial expressions. Plus it’s free!) to learn from, and you can find lots of learning media through local universities, libraries and museums. Some of my favorite artists to study were J.C. Leyendecker, Norman Rockwell, Richard Williams, Egon Schielle, and Winsor McCay!

Take inspiration from everything!!!! Animation, graphic design, branding, interior design, writing, history, music, languages— don’t just limit yourself to illustration. If something looks interesting, study it along with your art. It’ll help you see things from different perspective and help you create art that looks unique to you.

Don’t limit yourself to just digital or traditional art either. Most of my favorite art comes from combining transitional with digital. Experiment! Be weird! Get messy! And don’t try to make a masterpiece every time.

For anyone who needs it-

It’s been a while since the original post so I figured I’d bring this back - Line of Action (formerly Pixellovely) is a really useful quick reference site for life drawing.

They have 5 categories now:

Figure, Animal, Hands and Feet, Faces and Expressions, and Scenes and Environment drawing references. And they have some really helpful options:

Not comfortable with nude models? Optional! Want to do only 30-second quick figures? You can do that. You can also set it to “Class Mode”, which as advertised starts you with quick pacing and then slows to longer timing on the poses. The slideshows also have full back-pause-stop-forwards kind of controls, so if you want to do a longer shot of something cool or skip one that’s not helpful, you can totally do that.

Hands and Feet lets you do both or either, Animal Drawing lets you choose between only live animals, or skeletons, or a mix of both; Faces and Expressions lets you choose by emotion if you don’t want the mixed bag.

I use this tool regularly as often as I can >.>’’ and all of those controls are readily available without a subscription - I don’t even have one. Scenes and Environment, which is totally new to me, is currently subscription-only because it’s in beta, so I can’t tell you much about that.
