anyways. i think the "humanity is inherently violent and self-destructive" theme of the original planet of the apes is a little over-simplified (the world as we know it today being destroyed by nuclear war would not be a result of human nature, but of imperialism and colonialism and capitalism) BUT i do find it very funny that in the new movie the most peaceful apes are the ones who know fuck-all about humans, and the most violent ones are the ones specifically going out of their way to learn about and emulate humanity (specifically Roman history)

Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes (2024) dir. Wes Ball
["It sounds like there’s a future for your human characters such as Mae."]  Wes Ball: "Yeah, that’s the goal, and that’s also why you see Dichen Lachman from Severance at the end. I begged her. I was like, “Hey, I know it’s only three shots, but I’m trying to set up a character that [the audience] is going to want to see more of in the future.” I suppose you can call it a cliffhanger, but the end of our movie is more like a door opening to the next movie in a weird way. So there’s a lot more to come, and there’s going to be a lot more drama and conflict. These characters [Noa and Mae] have now saved each other, and they have a complicated connection. There is now a history and real feelings between the two, and that’s going to be important moving forward. So, as you can imagine, that’s going to be really fun to explore as it gets messier."

SPOILERS FOR THE NEW PLANET OF THE APES MOVIE
a list of things I thought about the new movie
it’s a shame we didn’t get to know anything about Cornelius
i want to know what happened to the original Nova from War. Clearly she was important enough to Maurice and the others that they continued to call all female humans “Nova”
i fully believe that Noa is a descendant of Caesar. You can’t convince me otherwise
Mae frustrated me. On one hand I can see from her perspective why she’s right. She’s essentially doing for humans what Caesar did for apes in Rise. On the other hand, unlike Caesar, she clearly doesn’t believe that apes and humans can coexist.
i hope the next two movies in the trilogy explain what happened to Caesar’s second son after Caesar’s death
I hope we see more Mae in the future. As an ally, not an enemy. They’re clearly setting up for another “humans vs ape” war, and I don’t want Mae to be on the wrong side
im really hoping they keep the original premise from the 1970’s movies where eventually humans and apes coexist
not sure how I feel about the possibility of time travel/space travel being brought back. It worked for a 1970’s movie but I feel like it would come off as tacky
if they kill Noa off like they did Caesar, I’m throwing myself off of a cliff

Not me thinking about how Sylva's death was a perfect Rule of Three payoff, because when he killed Noa's father (and tried to kill Noa) he was standing over them with a clear advantage and control over the situation, and the same when he cut the netting Raka was holding onto at the bridge...and then when he drowned in the tower, Noa trapped him and stood over him, with the clear advantage.

"He's gonna skin your monkey alive" Trevathan I know Noa and Mae suck at hiding their mutual crush but you didn't have to air out their business like that.

HEAR ME OUT-
vid by @thatfilmguy5 on tiktok
Their scenes together have this likable tension. Every time Im like WHAT IS HAPPENING AND WHY DO I LOVE IT. There was this super intense scene in a field where Mae called for him and Noa came to her aid like a knight on a horse literally. It got me like- Oh… I want to see where this is going. 😳😳🙈
Their dynamic also complements each other that its cute! How they’re parallels but similar in what they’re fighting for. Both opening each other’s eyes to different worlds. HOW COULD I NOT WANT their relationship to develop in future sequels (even if they’re not endgame the TENSION IS THERE)
and their chemistry-
Tumblr media
Its chef’s kiss. Its the Highlight of this film. When you watch it you’ll know. Their chemistry makes the characters sooo rootable and makes you more curious that you want to see how their dynamic flourishes whether as enemies or as besties- which is good and healthy for the franchise!!
Idk how they did it but the writers and Wes Ball knew what they were doing pining us with this tension. GENIUS.

Can we all agree that Anaya sweetly saying "Hello, Echo" to Mae was one of the most precious things ever??

Noa and Mae Parallels
• Noa and Mae are young adults who are let outside the comforts of their home to prove themselves to their society. Noa with the Eagle clan and Mae with the underground humans.
• They were born in the planet of the apes. Where Noa has barely much knowledge of the past, especially human history whereas Mae was raised on stories of when humans used to rule over apes.
• Until they met each other, they only knew of the other’s species as either mute primitives animals or violent apes.
• They both work to save their respective people from Proximus, though where Noa frees his clan from him, Mae steals a device from Proximus’ domain that will help her people contact with other human settlements.
• The elders of their respective species try to tell them to accept the current reality of their situation, but both refuse. Mae rejects Trevathan’s insistence that the world now belongs to the apes and try to coexist with them. Their scene is followed by Dar telling Noa they are now part of Proximus’ kingdom and not anymore the Eagle clan, which Noa refuses to accept.
• They both kill someone of the same species. Noa killed Silva and Proximus out of self defense without really putting his hands on them. Mae choked Trevathan to death with her bare hands.
• Noa and Mae are wearing something blue when they meet again in the ending. Noa has a band of blue feathers on his arm while Mae has a blue poncho. They both also ride horses through a field.
• Noa and Mae reject the current state of the world and seek a radical change of the status quo. Mae wants to see humanity on top again, running back to the past, while Noa is open to coexistence between apes and humans, running towards the future.

also i am Quite Concerned about these pockets of humans that still exist out there. The original Planet of the Apes heavily implies that nuclear war is what wiped out humanity, but no such event has taken place in the prequel films. Society collapsed because of the virus, not because of a deadly war between global powers. But if there are humans still around with access to pre-virus technologies, if there are silos out there that have pre-virus weaponry in them (including, potentially, nuclear weapons), and if these humans are wanting to retake the planet from apes...

This is an interview with Wes Ball, director of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, out in cinemas now.
He mentions Dichen and her character in the following paragraph, which contains spoilers for the movie but can be seen under this readmore:
The Hollywood Reporter: But it sounds like there’s a future for your human characters such as Mae.  Wes Ball: Yeah, that’s the goal, and that’s also why you see Dichen Lachman from Severance at the end. I begged her. I was like, “Hey, I know it’s only three shots, but I’m trying to set up a character that [the audience] is going to want to see more of in the future.” I suppose you can call it a cliffhanger, but the end of our movie is more like a door opening to the next movie in a weird way. Spoilers for Kingdom!
It actually makes perfect sense for Caesar to be considered "Ape Jesus" now because when you think about it, he did alot of stuff that would basically be considered Godlike to anybody who didn't know what was happening behind the scenes. I mean he gave the apes in the primate center SENTIENCE
Tumblr media
Imagine one day you just wake up and find yourself able to think in a more complex way than you could ever imagine in your wildest dreams. Caesar essentially performed a miracle to the other apes.
That would be shocking and amazing on its own, but Caesar ups the ante even more later that same day by SPEAKING
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That look on Buck's face says it all. He's shocked, amazed, and horrified.
There was absolutely no way for the other apes to know about anything related to GenSys, or the drugs Caesar gave them. Him doing any of this was completely unthinkable in their eyes.
And right after this? He successfully leads all the apes in the city to the redwoods, their new home, and essentially their promised land
Tumblr media
Later on in Dawn, he gets shot by Koba and collapses. Something all the apes see happen right before their eyes
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
...and then COMES BACK FROM THE DEAD to save both the apes and the humans from Koba's reign
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At this point in time, only Blue eyes, Maurice, Rocket, and a handful of other apes knew that Koba was the one who had shot Caesar, not the humans. It was definitely going through the minds of the apes that Caesar had defeated death itself to challenge Koba and stop him from putting anymore lives in danger
It was only after in War, after freeing the Apes from the Colonel's prison and taking them miles away to finally live peacefully, that Caesar could die
Tumblr media
If you were an ape in the primate center with all the other apes following Caesar, and didn't know every detail of what was going on you'd think he was some sort of diety or blessing from God. Caesar's legacy living on in the future as a Christlike figure just makes perfect sense

Raka: the human girl followed you all the way from your camp?
Noa: yes. it’s very annoying
Raka: and an Eagle follows you as well? You have TWO animal sidekicks that follow you??
Noa: I guess
Raka: and you can SING?????
Noa: well—
Raka: the old books have spoken of this phenomenon before. Animal sidekicks & singing. By any chance, was one of or both of your parents the leader of your clan?
Noa: actually yes. how’d you know?
Raka:
Raka: have you ever heard of this mysterious ancient creature known as a “Disney Princess” Noa?
