Perhaps appropriate for a rainy Friday. White prayer flag. Wave-like bag with Vietnamese writing found floating in the water near Halong bay. Bar codes from various bags collected all over the world, MoMa bag from NYC, black from bin bag picked up post-Chapel market Angel, London. #plasticfreefriday #litterati #makeartnottrash

Plastic recycling motion graphic
Questions -
What are the consequences and long term effects of using plastic?
Plastic generally degrades in about 500 - 1000 years, this is only an estimate though since plastic usage hasn’t been in use for that long, Ethylene oxide, xylene, and benzene are some of the chemical toxins present in plastic. Plastic also affects the wildlife animals drastically for example studies found that 90% of seabirds contains plastic debris, as well as many marine animals can become tangled and trapped within the plastic which can cause suffering and even death.
What is plastic pollution?
Plastics don’t cost much to produce and are durable which explains the mass amounts humans create. They also degrade slowly due to the chemicals used. An estimated 1.1 to 8.8 million metric tons of plastic waste enters the ocean from coastal communities each year. As of 2018, about 380 million tons of plastic is produced worldwide each year with about half being disposable, even in the UK alone, only 25% of plastic is recycled with the other 75% going into landfills.
What I’m doing my project on?
I have decided to make my infographic focusing on the use of McDonald's straws from them being picked up in the restaurant until their final stage which I have yet to research. The chain uses 1.8 million straws in the UK a day and are said to have moved entirely to paper straws in the UK later in the year of 2019.
Changing my focus to the number of seabirds including debris (being 90%). An animation where I state multiple happy things that are 90% then have the final 90% fact be really dark and sad being the 90% of seabirds including debris followed by the words “recycle your plastic”, repetition of the words “did you know” then followed by the fact.
Possible idea projects -
McDonalds straws
90% of seabirds with plastic debris inside them
Petroleum plastics
Many different facts about plastic into one video
What are disposable plastics? How are they disposed of effectively?
Some of these single-use plastics include:
Plastic straws
Plastic bags
Plastic cutlery
Six pack rings
Disposable plastics is the title given to plastics which are only used once then thrown away or recycled. Petroleum-based plastic is not biodegradable and usually goes into a landfill where it is buried or it gets into the water and finds it’s way into the ocean. Although petroleum doesn’t biodegrade it will degrade and break down into small pieces which release more potential toxic chemicals into the atmosphere which could end up the human water and food supply.
More recently these toxic chemicals are being found in humans which can lead to cancer, infertility, birth defects, impaired immunity and many more.
How does the UK dispose of plastics?
Nearly all councils provide plastic recycling collections, this plastic is then provided to the recycling sector, sectors can either be public or private. If the raw materials are from plastic packaging they can be transformed into either closed loop or open loop plastics, the closed loop being transformed back into food grade material such as drinking bottles and open loop recycling into the more long term applications such as plastic pellets.
If the raw materials are electrical then they can be transformed into different electrical or stationary equipment. Parts of vehicles are often turned back into components for other vehicles or a whole other range of applications such as flower pots.
What is being done to tackle this? Please explain
Many organisations have been set up to help clean the environment such as Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth and One Green Planet.
One of Greenpeace's largest campaigns is a global petition to encourage the action against single-use plastic. Friends of the Earth promotes the hashtag #plasticfreefriday where people go once a week without using any plastic. One Green Planet are the founders of the #CrushPlastic Movement, which is a campaign that focuses on reducing single-use plastics including shopping bags, coffee cups, water bottles, take-out containers and straws.
The UK specifically has been trying to tackle the plastic issue, one way was by banning microbeads which are tiny plastics which were previously found in face wash and toothpaste. Taxing plastic bags is another way the problem was trying to be reduced with some stores now such as Tesco banning the single carrier 5p bags all together in favour of the 10p bag for life. The UK has even set aside £60 to help crack down on the amount of plastic in the world’s oceans.
What are the creative and innovative solutions to plastic use?
In Oregon Angela Haseltine Pozzi rallied volunteers to collect the plastic materials that were on the beach to make a large model fish.
Using used plastic bottles to make piggy banks. The transparency helps see how much money you have in.
Creating storage containers which have a unique design and are seethrough to see how much of a certain item you have left.
Biodegradable six-pack holder in order to save marine life and cut down the amount of plastic waste in the ocean. The ring is also safe for animals to consume.
MacRebur creating an asphalt solution for roads made from 100% waste material including waste which would be burnt in a landfill.

Our Paper Kraft bags have arrived! It's been a long search for an affordable, hardwearing, eco-friendly alternative to the usual large (plastic) bag used by the industry to return clothes and household items. But we're now delighted to be changing the way dry cleaners consume plastic! And the extra support they offer means your clothes are also protected even more! #plasticfreefriday https://ift.tt/2sRviOd
