Hey guys, we need to talk. Because a certain little something in TMAGP 8 is causing what is genuinely the most toxic part of the Magpod fandom at large to once again rear its ugly head. So let's talk about podcast character appearance head canons, shall we?

I'm tagging this with the Magnus Archives, TMA and Magpod tags because I am absolutely calling all of you out, but if you don't want spoilers for The Magnus Protocol episode 8 then stop reading right now.

. Okay, so, Gerry exists in the TMAGP universe. He's happy (or at least acts cheerful). And some people have headcanoned this to mean that he is no longer goth, or at the very least isn't dying his hair black with bad box color. And other people have decided to get seriously agro over this. I have literally seen with my very own eyeballs someone call "un-gothing" Gerry a "hate crime" and calling the person they were talking to "gothphobic."

Let me make this absolutely clear for all of you: podcasts are a purely audio medium and unless a physical trait of theirs is explicitely stated, everyone's headcanon for how a character appears is valid. Goth TMAGP Gerry is valid. But also

Rainbow Goth TMAGP Gerry is valid. Pastel Goth TMAGP Gerry is valid.

Not Goth At All TMAGP Gerry is valid.

Bald Gerry who has actually gotten his brain cancer diagnosed in time and is getting treated for it is valid. Somebody's headcanon of a character that has no canonical description to them, or whose headcanon matches the few crumbs of canonical description we have but otherwise doesn't look the way you imagine them to, is not going to take away from your own headcanon of what a character looks like. If someone imagining or drawing a character looking a different way from how you imagine them looking somehow takes away from your enjoyment of the fandom or otherwise makes you feel like you need to barge in and tell them that they're Wrong and need to conform to your headcanon or else, that is a reflection on you, not them.

And this problem way predates TMAGP, let alone TMAGP 8. The only description we have of John is that he is in his early 30's and has prematurely greying hair.

If someone thinks he looks like the pastiest motherfucker to ever dwell in a basement, an extra-in-the-Adam's Family or Tim Burtan protagonist of a man, let them.

What's that? You want to tell them that John is BROWN and if they don't headcanon him looking that way they're WRONG and RACIST? Back away from the keyboard and go outside.

(Ironically, as someone who started getting grey hairs in my hair in my 20's myself, I'm pretty sure everyone's headcanon of John, with tiny little whisps of grey in his hair, is wrong, because if he was so grey that people were surprised to learn he was "a child of the 90's," he was probably full on salt-and-pepper when he was in his 20's.)

The only description we have for Martin is that he (man who canonically has the self esteem of a used doormat) describes himself as "not the smallest guy", Not-Sasha called him "roomy", Melanie is skinner than him, and Jonny said he imagined him as a "bigger guy" who would beat Alex in a physical fight. If someone decides to take this information and conclude that it means he's tall, broad and has muscle, rather than that he's overweight, fucking let them. If your first instinct to this is to run to your keyboard and call them "fatphobic" or otherwise bash them for it, I once again urge you to back away from your keyboard and go outside.

Someone headcanons Basira not wearing a headscarf? We have exactly 0 canonical physical description of her and the people who headcanon her as having one are basing that purely off of her name alone. Fucking let them. Someone headcanons Melanie and/ or Georgie as a skin color you don't agree with or a hairstyle you don't like? Fucking let them. As long as someone's headcanon of a character's description doesn't contradict the few canonical descriptions we have of a character, why do you care? Them having a different headcanon from you doesn't take away your right to imagine the characters looking however you like, anymore than it should take away their right to do the same. Someone headcanoning John as white (or Black, or Asian, or Mixed, or whatever) isn't going to make all of the fanart of John as brown with long hair suddenly disappear, nor the fanfiction describing him as such (although I do often wonder if the opposite is not true; is the fact that John looks the same in so much of the fanart I see on here really because of fandom "consensus", or is it because people are absolutely awful to anyone who draws him Different?). Someone headcanoning Martin as not fat isn't going to make the mountains of fanart of him as a fluffy little marshmallow vanish into the void (although I do remember hearing about someone getting bullied off the internet for daring to draw Martin as not fat). And someone headcanoning Gerry in TMAGP as not being goth isn't going to take away your preciouse goth TMAGP Gerry headcanon. That should be part of the fun of it, shouldn't it? Seeing what different images people have conjured in their heads of these characters we only get to experience with our ears, and celebrating the differences as well as the similarities? Why are we bullying people into conforming to one appearance of a character when no actual canonical appearance of them exists?

The amount of the fandom who listen to this podcast, which condemns the audience for being a voyeur very openly, and then completely miss that point is staggering. Art has an inherently voyeuristic element, to listen to suffering as one does when listening to TMA is to be a voyeur, to hear the petty office gossip and the drama between characters on tape is inherently invasive.

It's also reflective of reality.

It's such a key piece of analysis and it seems like the fandom is swamped in condemnation of characters for revealing information on tape when the question then is: How else would we know? We are voyeurs, listening to this fictional world where we are dependent on the creator to showcase what details are significant. I think that generally, that is quite well done and at the same time, people get quite angry over it.

I'm not certain I'm articulating this well, but I think the biggest example is Melanie's passing mention of Jon's sexuality. It's so interesting to me that people condemn Georgie and Melanie for talking about it (but not Martin, which...), but that lens is not self-reflective of the fact that we, as listeners, should also not know it. It is representative of a lot of real life interactions in a very specific way that lives outside of idealism where information about people is often revealed and obtained without consent from either party. Part of the purpose of that reveal I believe is genuinely to comment on what the audience has been wondering about Jon in terms of sexuality and to call them in for their own voyeuristic tendencies by making them listening to it.

And yet, the only analysis that comes out of that is fighting over what that statement means in terms of Jon's sexuality. The number of arguments over what flavor of asexual that man is like he's an ice cream freezer crops up every month or so. The information is minimal and three people removed from the source, and not intended to be overhead by us, and then it causes a debate. The purpose of that, and overhearing gossip and learning things about people they haven't revealed themselves is that we are not supposed to know at all!

Huge fandom miss in my opinion in terms of analysis.

That isn't the only instance--I think the final statements of Elias and Rosie are also very good examples where that is information that we are not supposed to know. Unlike statement givers who have come to the institute or those who are not named, they don't offer that information freely (as much as can be said with an Archivist in tow), and its deeply disturbing that we, as viewers, have access to it. That so many headcanons and thoughts and ideas are built around twenty minutes of what is essentially forcibly extracted information.

The listener as the voyeur is one of the strongest elements of TMA and missing that I think is the core of so much fandom discourse. We could all benefit from some self-awareness, I think.

she was a regular girl, the youngest of four, raised around three older brothers and with her father being the football coach of university at albany, her childhood was spent on football fields and she loved every second of it.

she was a tried and true tomboy - always wanting to roughhouse with the boys and played every sport in the book - from softball to basketball, but her true love was always soccer.

so many friends of theirs would be in shock listening to them tell the stories of the things they got into and always told them that they needed their own show and thus, ‘the call her daddy’ podcast was born.

they started out with a small following - it being about the two girls shooting the shit, using secret codenames to talk about all the boys they had been dating, giving life and romance advice to girl’s their age who wrote into the show and eventually, barstool sports caught on and signed the two to their media company.

this took the podcast to a whole other level and from 2017 to 2022, the two remained at the top - having special guests every now and then and topping the podcasts charts week after week for being blunt, batshit crazy, absolutely hilarious and relatable.

however, it all almost came crashing down last year. after the girls saw how much money they were pulling in for the network verses how much they were taking home in their paychecks, they demanded a pay raise which barstool denied and the two decided to walk, even if that meant losing everything.

but when one door closes another one opens - the girls were offered a 60 million dollar contract with spotify, were moved out to los angeles and are now living their absolute best lives.

the podcast has shifted dramatically, focusing mostly on scandalous interviews with high profile celebrities, being the only two who are able to get down to the nitty gritty details that the audience just wants to know with them and aside from their usual sex talk, have also shifted more into women empowerment and mental health topics, as well.

but deep down, georgina is still the same girl she once was - almost never catching her not in sweatpants, thirsting over athletes, every once in a while having episodes that mirror the old ones and just being a true, down to earth, real girl who has no idea what to do with the fame other than be her wild and crazy, silly self.

Q: What is TMA Mspec Week about?

A: This event is about celebrating canon mspec characters, as well as your mspec headcanons in the podcast The Magnus Archives

Q: Why make a TMA Mspec event?

A: This podcast has a rare instance of an mspec ace main character, as well as multiple unique mspec characters, which is something we all love deeply and want to celebrate. On top of that, we want to encourage creation of fanworks with mspec headcanons for other characters, because the more the merrier! The mods are also bi/mspec people themselves, or simply folks who enthusiastically support mspec identities, so this is a very exciting opportunity for us!

Q: When does the event take place? 

A:  From January 25th until February 1st, 2021

Q: What does "mspec" mean? 

A: Mspec means "multi spectrum" and is an umbrella term for all queer identities that include attraction to more than one gender, e.g bisexual/biromantic, pansexual/panromantic, polysexual/polyromantic, omnisexual/omniromantic, etc.

Q: What tags does the event use?

A: To get your work seen and reblogged/retweeted by us, tag it as "#tma mspec week" on Tumblr, and "#MspecWeekTMA" on Twitter.  

Q: Do we have to use all of the given prompts?

A: Nope. We give a selection of three types of prompts per day, generic / mspec-related / character list, and you can choose to use one, two, all three, or none of the suggested prompts. They're there purely for your inspiration

Q: Character prompts give you three characters per day. Do we have to use all three??

A: Nope! If you choose to use the character prompts at all, you can choose one, two or, if you want a little challenge, even all three. And, of course, your work absolutely doesn't have to be limited to the chosen characters. Meaning that if out of a list of Jon, Tim and Melanie you chose just Jon, your work can still be JonDaisy, JonMartinGeorgie, just Jon or something entirely else. We wanted to add the character prompts to hopefully inspire out of the box thinking about which characters could be mspec, and encourage a wide diversity of representation in the works that could be created!

Q: What do you mean by "the works have to touch on the topic of mspec identity"?

A: While there are no strict boundaries, the main goal of the event is the celebration of mspec identities and content featuring them. This can mean an explicit exploration of a character's identity and self-discovery, but it can also simply mean, for example, a MartinGeorgie artwork or a JonPeter fanfic. We leave it up to you to decide how you personally interpret this topic and how you personally want to celebrate it. We won't strictly police the content, but also ask people participating to only submit works they genuinely believe fit the event.

Q: Do the works have to be focused on romantic relationships?

A: Nope! The works can be romantic couples or romantic poly, but they can also focus on just one character, a friendship, QPP relationship, found family, or otherwise platonic relationships. The only important thing is touching in any way on exploration/celebration of a mspec identity, however you envision it.

Q: Can the focus in the work be on a different identity alongside the mspec one, or are only mspec identities allowed?

A: Yep, it absolutely can be! We more than encourage intersectionality, and if you want a character to be bi ace and trans, or maybe pan and nonbinary, or simply queer in their own unique identity, we completely support it.

Q: Can the work feature mspec/lgbtqa+-phobia or otherwise negative/upsetting/angsty content?

A: Yep! You can certainly explore or feature elements such as bi/pan/mspec-phobia, aphobia, transphobia, etc. within your work, as long as it doesn't promote such behavior as correct or justified. But please be sure to tag and warn for such themes accordingly.

Q: Do all characters in a work for this event have to be mspec?

A: Of course not! While the focus should be on mspec identities, it doesn't mean that it can't feature gay, lesbian, aroace, or straight characters. However, we will not allow erasure of canonically mspec characters, such as Jon (both as mspec and ace), Tim, and Georgie, in favor of different headcanons.

Q: Are only mspec fans allowed to participate?

A: Of course not, any fan of any identity is allowed to participate, of course as long as they act respectfully and in good faith.

Q: Is there a minimum or maximum word count for fanfic?

A: Nope

Q: Is any ship/headcanon/content/etc. not allowed in this event?

🥝  :    does my muse have any  ‘  unusual  ’  habits,  interests,  and  /  or talents?  do they hide it,  or are they proud of it?  

Georgie had a stint of being super into tie-dye and dyeing about anything that would take dye.  Then she got some distance, had to spend time doing other things, and then was able to get clothes that she liked as they were.  She donated much of her dyed collection, but kept some of the pieces that she really liked. 

She still likes it and has made some cool reverse tie-dye pieces since with some of her own merch, in particular.  It’s not like a secret, but she doesn’t talk about it too much.  Like, if she wore a shirt she dyed and someone was like ‘where’d you get that, it’s cool’ she’d be fine saying she made it and be happy to talk about the subject further, but wouldn’t bring it up cold.

Distortion is not here because it can be whatever height it wants, whenever it wants.  It tends to shift to be taller than whoever it is talking to because that is usually more intimidating.  However, sometimes it likes to change heights when someone looks away - growing either taller or shorter -  so that the person looks in the wrong spot when they turn back around.  I think Helen did that more than Michael.  In life, Michael was taller than Helen. ))

Memory Lane || ACCEPTING

GEORGIE

Georgie’s memory resembles her apartment, though portions seem to be more like her childhood home.  There’s a lived in quality to the space and it is more thoroughly decorated and painted than her actual apartment, perhaps a manifestation of a dream aesthetic that just... hasn’t quite happened yet.

There is a memory version of the Admiral, big and fluffy and even more orange than in real life, wandering around.

He mews and rubs up against one’s leg, shedding a memory that can be experienced.

There is a movie playing on the TV, though the scenes skip and loop and appear out of order.  Plastics bags and trays of take-out cover the little coffee table.  Georgie and Melanie are sitting at opposite ends of the couch, lounging but trying to give one another enough space to actually eat.

The Admiral pads up and hops in between them with a ‘mrrrew.’  Georgie watches him glance between the space against Melanie and the space against her.  Georgie describes the scene to Melanie, finding it too cute not to share.

“Seems like he’s trying to pick a favorite,” Melanie jokes.

Georgie gapes. “You bastard!  I raised you!”

ELIAS

In the cluttered mess that is Elias’s memory, a yearbook tumbles out of the stack.  Briefly it opens on a class photo before flipping to the very back, where there is a long, long note.

There is a girl.  Her name is Stella.  She’s still having trouble convincing her mom to let her grow her hair out, but she has deftly managed to make the boy’s uniform feminine enough for her tastes.

The memory seems to shudder in a small feedback loop of all the times Elias has admired the way she just was herself and the time he finally plucked up the courage to talk to her.

In this memory, though, they have just finished correcting Stella’s name in both their yearbooks.  Stella reaches over and snatches Elias’s yearbook.  He yelps before Stella tosses hers into his lap with a wide grin.

“C’mon!  We gotta sign these things.”

Elias does not remember what he writes, so the ink swirls, settles into likely possibilities, and then swims again.  He signs ‘Elias Bouchard’ with a flourish he has not felt since this year started.

They trade back yearbooks.

Elias does not remember the exact words, not after all these years.  But what he does remember is the way his chest is engulfed in warmth.  The way his eyes sting and his vision blurs with tears.  The way he suddenly has Stella in his arms and they are both smiling and crying and promising to keep in touch after graduation.

DEE

Dee’s memory is an idealized version of their lab, more closely resembling their lab at the biotech company or Duke than the basement lab they currently have.  Some memories are stored in the computer, others are incubating, others are in the lab notebook on the table.

Looking in the microscope, there is another memory.

Dee is an undergrad, nervously walking into the department’s cell culture room for the first time alone.  Their lab notebook is clutched to their chest until they drop it on the table.

As if they might break it, they gingerly open the cell incubator and withdraw the culture plates.  They’re being trusted to feed or split the cells themself this time.

Tenderly they carry the plates to the microscope and check them for contamination or if they’re too confluent to use at all.  They don’t think they’ll have grown too much; the cells have never gotten too confluent in two days.

But then the frown at the microscope, looking at the carpet of cells.

Their professor said to just toss the plates that were too confluent because they start differentiating and it is a pain in the ass.  Still, Dee holds the plate in question, feeling bad.  They rub the lid of the plate, whispering an apology before gingerly putting them in the biohazard.

It’s a skill, to look inside yourself, one you have mastered. The endless corridors and shifting thoughts are mapped to very carefully. This all takes time, of course. And those twisting hallways are so very difficult to map. It would be so easy to get lost. You know this space so well. Wouldn’t it be a lovely place to stay? So well-known and comforting. Why go back? How nice, how easy, to dissolve, to hide from the rest of the world and all the people in it. Why bother, when you are so good at looking inside yourself. Like enlightenment, the self. Retreating this far inwards is like retreating just as far out, into the vast ether. So comforting. The thing that was you looks at the thing that was the old woman. There is no you anymore. Goodbye.
