I recently finally got to read Amanda Gorman's Change Sings: A Children's Anthem, illustrated by Loren Long. It's a delightful picture book with gorgeous illustrations, gorgeous poetry, and a message that is so important for kids (and everyone) to hear: that we can achieve change in areas that need it if we put the effort into making change happen. Highly recommended. I'll commandeer a ship this is what pirates do, Then I'll search for treasure and mermaids in the blue. As a pirate captain I'll have a scurvy crew, They may be scallywags but this fact is true, They'll do as I say because they fear my sword, And if they do not mutiny they'll have their reward. Of gold doubloons, sparkling jewels, pearls, and kingly crowns, They can have all the treasure once it has been found. Because I do not treasure jewels or doubloons of gold, The treasure for me is a life lived at sea as a pirate brash and bold. I know it is time to make my pirate dream come true, To live life outside the rules as all pirates do. I'm tempted to say that I'm not a poetry fan, but that wouldn't be entirely true. What I'm not a fan of is SERIOUS poetry. Adult poetry. Ponderous poetry. What I loooove is what poetry becomes in the hands of some with a silly sensibility, a way with words, and an audience of kids. Alice Schertle's "Button Up!: Wrinkled Rhymes" (2009) is a lesser-known but wonderful example of this. 👟👟👟 A book of clever, funny poems about clothing, written from the clothes' point of view, and illustrated in charming detail by Petra Mathers, this is a fun exploration of familiar objects from new perspectives. I love poetry for short storytimes and for prompting conversation with young kids. What a gorgeous afternoon at @redbridgelibraries Book Awards! I got to share some of my work with 11-16 yr old students from schools across London who, admittedly, were not sure if they liked poetr at first! But swipe to see their comments after they heard some #spokenword :p - - Convinced everyone to be in a #stageselfie with me, then had my first ever queue of people asking for #autographs! Incredibly validating 😊 and one girl even drew a picture of me!!!
