A trip down memory lane! Though the tower seems to have changed…

Celestial tower! Built during the direct aftermath of the Founding Unovan Civil War, it remains a cultural landmark in memory of those lost in the fire and storm.

Time has dulled the scars left behind by the twin dragons. Today, the tower is primarily used as a mausoleum (the preferred method of burial are urns) and, well, a tourism site. Legend says if you climb to the top of the tower and ring the bell, you can lay your ghosts to rest. But mostly? You can ring a GIANT bell.

Course, you gotta GET to that bell first.

Patrat line review if not done already? Most forgotten route 1 mammal imo.

Patrat instantly avoids the usual early rodent blandness with its eyes, which not only have black bands around them, but are also red with yellow stripes. They pop really well and draw immediate attention to the theme of the line, which will become more obvious when it evolves.

Beyond that, the rest of the design is decent too; the black feet accent the black around the eyes, and the body has a few lighter accents to break up what would otherwise be a solid color. I'm not the biggest fan of the underbelly shape—it feels a little too round and doesn't quite fit with anything else—but otherwise this is a fine start to the line.

With Watchog, you can immediately tell what the theme is: it's a meerkat (technically a groundhog based on its names, though it doesn't look much like one) that has bioluminescent stripes that resemble a safety vest as it watches for predators. The stripes even light up like the reflective areas on crossing guard and construction vests:

Visually, Watchog does exactly what you would hope it would: it takes the most interesting elements of Patrat's design (the stripes) and expands on them greatly. I like the darker red body, which adds contrast to the yellow accents, and the addition of white on the body. Keeping the bright red exclusive to the eyes also helps them stand out. I do think the black bands are a bit out-of-place and could've just been dropped or made yellow, but everything else looks good.

Honestly, I'm... well I was going to say I was surprised this line isn't more popular, but to be fair it is a garish and intense design and vibe that not many people are going to enjoy, even if it's well-executed. Still, GameFreak leaving it off of the Switch entirely feels super harsh. Perhaps it'll get a mega in the future to compensate? It's fine as a two-stager, but I could see room to expand on the design a bit. Regardless, I like these two even if not many others do.

Overall, fun rodents with a clear visual motif and theme, though they might not be for everyone.

Do you have any thoughts on bird pokemon conservation issues related to wild and free roaming Meowth and other feline Pokemon populations? I've heard talk recently that they should be kept indoors, and only allowed outside under supervision or with a leash. I'd appreciate your input. That said, seeing a very dramatic Purugly in a leash is one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

The issue with feline 'mons comes not with the 'mon itself, but when invasive species are introduced to the region. For example, Meowths are a Kantonian predator, and as such, they're suited to hunt a certain type of 'mon (Pidgeys, Rattata), but their popularity has made it to every region, so there are now feral populations of Meowths and Persian that can decimate local fauna, as they don't have the strength or type advantage to protect themselves against 'em. Unfortunately, Unova's Patrat population is extremely low due to the recent inclusion of 'mons like Nickit and Litten to the ecosystem, and their presence in other regions is practically gone!

"Feline" it's a wild group that's not well defined (like... Trubbish is technically a "feline"), but in general, 'mons with a high prey drive that are not native to the area should not be allowed to roam freely without supervision. Or at least they should wear a funny harness, both to make 'em easier to see in case they get lost, so other 'mons can see 'em more easily and hide, and 'cause it's really cute.
