an interesting touhou (?) fact is that polaris (Aa, the one we call the north star) is a yellow supergiant, which is a star in a fairly short portion of its lifespan. it's also part of a binary system; while normally, yellow supergiants progress later in their lifespans into red supergiants, yellow supergiants whose hydrostatic equilibrium is destabilized by binary interaction can go supernova instead of undergoing this transition.

anyway, it's also about 425-450 light-years away, so even if it exploded tomorrow we wouldn't notice immediately. but youkai hypothesizing that polaris Aa might disappear within a few thousand years might be correct!

(of course, the fantastical explanation exists in parallel to the real explanation, just like tidal lock.)

A podcast rec: Tunnels. Its from 2016 and the production quality is kind of rough in the beginning, but the lovely 'passion project' energy radiates off it and it's just a nice spoopy story. Arguably jumps the shark a bit at the end but on the other hand, who doesn't like sharks.

I gave this one a go back in 2020 and although the genre is right up my alley, I remember finding the attitude around mental health a bit ableist? It bothered me, so I didn't get very far in. However, I also recognise that humans are rarely stagnant entities, and projects can change with their creators, so if it gets better on that front I'm willing to give it another shot?

Plant fact: Humans like to think of sharks as remarkably ancient, being older than Polaris and Saturn's rings, which is fair enough. 450 million years is a good run. But mosses are believed to be just as old, are just as cute, and rarely get the same credit on either point.

I had to look it up, sharks as a species/family are around 400-450 million years old. One of the stars in the "North Star" is younger than sharks.

Here's a quote, because star naming system is hard for me to write out properly lol.

"As an example of the varying estimates, a 2020 study (that has not been peer-reviewed) estimated Polaris Aa is between 45 and 67 million years old, Polaris Ab is at least 500 million years old, and Polaris B is around 1.5 billion years old."

As its current form, Olcott speculates that the constellation has originated with the Phoenicians. It was not mentioned by the Greeks "until about 600 BC." At that point the Greeks began to use it for navigation instead of Ursa Major, inspired by the Phoenicians. Because of this, the group has been designated as "Phoinike" (Olcott 371).

Olcott further speculates that the Greeks called Ursa Minor "Cynosura" or "the dog's tail" (Olcott 371).

Evidently the Phoenicians called the constellation "Doube" meaning the "speaking constellation," which also could mean in that language a "bear," which linked the two ideas (Olcott 371-372).

Babylonia saw this constellation as a leopard while it was known as a dog in Egypt. It was also associated with jackals. It's additionally been seen as a chariot and of course bears. (Olcott 372).

Ursa Minor is identified with the son Arcas of Callisto, who was put into the sky right as he was about to slay his mother (who was in the form of a bear) (Olcott 372).

Ursa Minor and Ursa Major were thought to be the bears that protected and nursed Jupiter. For this, the two bears were turned into nymphs and placed into the sky (Allen 448).

The constellations of Ursa Major and Ursa Minor were commonly referred to as "dancing" by many different cultures due to its circle of the north pole (Allen 449).

Other animals associated with Ursa Minor include dogs, Calves (cows), Goats, Fish, Leopards, Fruit, and Jackals. Most creative was it being a "Hole in which the earth's axle found its bearing" (Allen 449-450). The Egyptians "saw a hippopotamus or a crocodile in the Ursa Minor stars" (Staal 139-140).

Some cultures saw it as a mountain upon which the heavens rested and the gods assembled (Allen 451).

Since the stars of Ursa Minor never set, some ancient Egyptians considered the stars to be evil (Staal 140).

The fixed nature of Polaris, the north pole star, made this Constellation incredibly important for navigation (Olcott 373).

One name for the constellation was "The Twister" (Allen 453), which is kind of amusing.

Inside the constellation is a neutron star, named "Calvera" (Wikipedia). It is "one of the hottest and closest of its kind to Earth."

Ancient peoples saw this constellation (and Polaris) as "an anchor that held the world in place... That top of the sky symbolized stability, order, and transcendental celestial power" (Krupp 275).

Ursa Minor/Polaris are seen as both keeping the world in order and a source of the world's order (Krupp 283).

World Championships - Lawnmower Racing

and we see this they go fast nope.  and tons lost hope  he said he knew how. does. and they did nto belive him and Gabriel helped. and then ok we see we try and SUE and good.  tons of times they say it.  and good.  and tommy f i did it said no way it is easy.  and it flies fast and on most things.  the bikes easy.  eh bikes much faster and sprockets same gears as teh ider. saw the zero turn radius and we add some models. they are front wheel drive.  and good.  for cars too.  same deal one model up.  but it is for a revtrike the wheels turn not the body.  and it is good.  they are old ashioned no they articulate now too. nope.  it is a way of using it to stear.  too harsh too slow using the tank method.  and we see them smile saw it.  yes.

now we  assembled four of them and are fast and rule the road and offroadl.  rule it.

anda  swegway we will see it and due to our son.  elongated lawnmower chassis.  and outrigged.  the H4 megan designed it said  good.  we expect tons. she bangs them out.

and now the rev trike. works on all zero turn radios mowers and chassis.  easy mod ok. use motorcycle tires and adjust.  remove the rear it simply spins is stationary.  change the seat, and more ok not hard.  easier still elongate it and it is like the polaris or slingshot and honda.  faster than the revtrike no but safer easier light and fast top speed 280 using the twenty and enclosed.  we use a differetn one not the chinese.  and the 35 is 300 the 45 is 450 but a car.  easty to drive yes all high speed tires rims suspension added. and tons make it now. tons.

In geography, sharks are older than:

The Atlantic Ocean, which formed when Pangea split ~150 million years ago

Pangea itself, which formed through the collision of Gondwana and Laurussia ~330 million years ago
