one of poldark's biggest strengths was its candid atmosphere. you will be hard pressed to find series set in this time (or in a particular popular era) and have the plot focus on the working class. usually you will find them focusing on the bourgeoisie all the way up to royalty, and while that's not wrong at all it is the groundedness of poldark that is different and shows you that people really had to work hard to live and sometimes failed, and they didn't go out on a beautiful warm bed in tailored clothes, decorated to the nines. some of them died freezing and drowning in a mine in the middle of bankruptcy while their family was miles away

I'm currently watching the 1971 Sense & Sensibility on YT and having issues that only the approx. 2 other Poldark 1975 fans on here will understand.
I knew Robin Ellis was in it (he and Joanna David being the two main reasons I was so keen to see it). I'd just assumed he was Willoughby - it's 1971, the year he played Essex in Elizabeth R and if you want dashing, handsome but definitely trouble in the early 70s he's yr man.
AND THEN HE TURNED UP AS EDWARD FERRARS.
Who, I asked, curious, could be Willoughby, then?
... and then Clive Francis walked in and my brain exploded.

my favourite thing? is that george is the only upperclass character - including ross - who consistently acknowledges servants, whether they be his own or others’. a footman brings him a letter or a drink or a plate of food? george nods in thanks, or goes so far as to actually meet their eye. a servant opens the door of his carriage or takes his note to announce his entrance to a room? or he hands his hat and coat to someone? he gives them a quick little look to say thanks. sometimes he’ll even give the tiniest smile, and do that expression that we all do when a waiter brings us our food and we want them to know they’re appreciated and seen.
he is the only upperclass character who is conscious of servants at all times, who is courteous, friendly, and kind to his staff, especially bessie, in every single interaction, however brief.
by contrast, because he was raised with servants, ross just hands his stuff to them without looking, barely noticing they’re even there, like they’re just a hat rack or furniture in a room.
to george, having servants is something he doesn’t take for granted, something he’s conscious of, something he actively appreciates and fears having taken from him, something which may even still seem foreign to him and which he regards a little self-consciously and shyly - and it shows in how he treats his employees.

it's always fun to realize the moment I've gotten attached enough to a piece of media to gain a new internal monologue voice.
Welcome to the team, Volition/The Narrator and also Kim Kitsuragi.
certainly hope you don't mind that the other common residents here are the Master and Paul fucking lostboys.

That being said… this Ross is sexy as hell 😭 his face is so hard. The 1970s turned 1790s queue is glorious.

Look who is joining us on this chilly Saturday morning! A new chapter from our friends at Nampara.
Once again Demelza must face down the consequences of her good intentions.
Read Chapter 83: "A Cold Snap" here.
Thanks so much for everyone who keeps reading this story. Just a few more installments though, and it will be coming to a close (though you've heard me say that before).

GOSH i'm thinking about the dynamic of rossliz. the PERMANENCE of it. because how many things did we see them go through. they went through a war. A WAR. do you know how grueling that is emotionally to both parties and for so long? and yet they still loved each other. and after that what happened? they were separated again for nearly a year (didn't see each other the entire pregnancy of liz' first child), had not one but TWO family feuds, an infant's death and the fatal accident of the man they both loved. death is like, the ultimate relationship tear. it just messes everything up. all parties are sent into a scatter and it's why a lot of them fall under and become strained. and ross and liz lost francis, one of the closest people they knew their whole lives. and then what happened to them? they didn't depart. they didn't scatter. they didn't go in their own corners to mourn. not only did their love stay IT MADE THEM CLOSER. do you know what that means?????? that they're not perfect, they do go through hardships, that life keeps hitting at them over and over and over and OVER but no matter how many times life hammers at them, no matter how much it scrubs at their souls, they still love each other. their love is just THERE. and it's not the fact that they can make it work, it's the fact that it's EFFORTLESS on their ends. that they can disagree and argue, but one thing we know is absolutely not changing and undoubtable in our minds is that their love is there and it will remain there. and whether they are friends, family (by law), co parents (they essentially raised geoffery charles), business partners, NEIGHBORS, they will mold whatever strife comes their way in their own favor. and it's that dynamic that sends me over the edge. it's that dynamic that i can talk and write about and scream and cry over for years on end because there SO MUCH layers there, so much maturity, so much APPEAL. their love is never up for debate in the times of strife. it's simply waiting to see how they overcome it. what they are willing to do (and not do) just for the sake of each other. i have never seen a couple dynamic done so effortlessly. NO-ONE is like them. not in poldark, but ANYWHERE.
