Shell and Bone bookbinding (duo with author copy), June 2024.

Ficbinding of Shell and Bone by @polymathema, take two! As before, this bookbinding is meant to look like a horror movie prop, with deliberately ripped up covers and pages and fake bloodstains.

For the author copy I went about the staining a little differently and chose to use my typical bookbinding archival paper because I think it looks more grungy than standard white printer paper. I used different ink colors for the fake blood as well, and I think it looks more realistic. Yay!

bootlicking when it’s in reference to four mods, several of them barely even adults, who were being bullied for their art designs. Is pathetic. Some of you just want to be victimized. And some of you are ableist about touching grass. you do not care and you never will. you want to impose yourselves on others and for them to take it. and it’s always the loud ones. The ones with the power. The ones with multiple designs on site already. the ones who fancy themselves some kind of site revolutionist. That’s kind of what it’s about. a few holier than thou people who believe they know what’s best for a website that’s been going all this time out of love. the ones with all the friends who force themselves on others. It was jawbreaker who said to polymathemas that they “do not know you nor have I ever seen you before, and therefore I'm not going to take your word”. you don’t need to for someone to be allowed to voice their opinion. you are not an authority figure either. you are an unpleasant person who wants special treatment over smaller users. you’re a mean girl, boy, they, xe, entity, personal, thing, however you identity. they don’t want to sit with you anyway. no one needs your brown nosed approval to speak their mind.

its because they don’t make enough money on ads because ad revenue isn’t a valid means of making money on websites anymore. it’s the same issue all around, they can’t adapt so they’re going under :/ they should have given fair warning about this too they just did it overnight with no information about it except for a same day press release

paying money for their services is something most of us users would have agreed with and done (even if not being happy with it), but what they want (400$ per year) is ridiculous. I maybe would have paid 50$ bc I’m not really using it anymore but have a lot of old stuff up on the internet.

what do they think how many ppl are going to pay this? not enough to keep the site running, because most will just turn away and find another site. or maybe they realize they just f*cked up big time, but we’ll see I guess.

Peter in Pac Rim

EHEHEHEHEH so, Peter would almost certainly fill a Newt-like role. He’s in the K-sci department, but not because he got a relevant degree. Instead, it’s because he’s weirdly gifted at figuring out when/where the Kaiju are going to attack. He works with Ambrose, who WAS a ranger but retired to the K-sci division after getting grievously injured during his last fight.

Peter is the one who decides that the best way to beat a Kaiju is to become one with a Kaiju, and he obviously has to perform this drift when Ambrose isn’t around because, let’s be real, Ambrose is like, 90% of his impulse control.

When he and Ambrose do the second Kaiju drift, it’s an enlightening experience for them both because it isn’t like they can really hide their feelings for/about each other in the drift. But Peter figures it won’t be too awkward because, with the information they got, they’ll be out of jobs soon and it will no longer be office fraternization when Peter kisses the heck out of Ambrose.

Bookbinding of A Wizard's Devotional by @polymathema, March-July 2023.

A Wizard’s Devotional (Fantastic Beasts, Percival Graves x Credence Barebone) is about recovery from depression, some magic politics drama, and the complex experience of navigating whether and how to practice Christianity as a queer person especially if your religion was weaponized against you. Fics about Credence often touch on this, but most of the time religion is either mentioned extremely briefly or the character immediately and aggressively rejects his religious background. Those choices are good interpretive options that have their place. However, AWD leans in to a space where many queer Christians find themselves as young adults. I appreciate polymathema's compassion for this character and the many contradictions between his upbringing and experiences. I also recommend this work for gay yearning and nuanced approach to characters dealing with depression.

I’m very excited to show off this binding now that I have mailed a copy to the author! Huge shoutout to polymathema for answering my questions, he was very nice when I (a random internet stranger) asked him stuff about a fic from years ago.

This binding one of a nearly identical pair I made, and part of my ongoing project where I plan to make four matching bindings of my favorite fics from the Fantastic Beasts fandom. My personal copy is pretty much the same except for the spine decorations. I’ll post more photos when the set of four is done! To be clear this is the copy I mailed to polymathema; whenever I make a ficbinding, I try to contact the author and offer to make them a copy as well.

Can you even imagine my delight when I found obscurus lookin fabric!! The resale store had a lot of colors but for this particular piece I wanted the codex (physical book; the actual “book” is the text) to look somewhat like a religious text considering its themes, so I went for the subtler, not quite subdued navy as opposed to a brighter blue or purple option.

Materials: Textblock is archival paper, laser printed text, scrapbooking cardstock endpapers, with linen and beeswax stitching, reinforced with cotton cheesecloth as mull. Sewn endbands are cotton embroidery floss. Covers are Italian rayon bookcloth (spine) and hand-dyed cotton batik backed with handmade wood pulp paper (ink-like cover pattern). Cover lettering is machine-cut metallic heat transfer vinyl. The case is constructed of archival bookboard, handmade wood-paper, cotton rag paper, and PVA craft glue.

YOU SAID OR BUT I'M GONNA TAKE THAT AS BOTH. Ambrose in Dishonored cause I have Interests.

OKAY SO I haven't finished a Dishonored game yet (I'm so bad at them, even on easy *sob*), so I was kind of flummoxed for a bit as to what in the heck I was going to put here. Then I realized that it is AMBROSE, so here's what I've got.Ambrose used to be like, a palace guard or something like that, but after an attempted coup (or maybe successful coup, since those seem to happen a lot in Dishonored??), he was left very injured and he has this vague memory of a hallucination he had while he was trying not to die that involved this smarmy little shit with black eyes. He survived, but he had to retire to a life of training/teaching others because he could no longer perform his duties.At any rate, years go by and now something has happened to the prince *koffpeterkoff*? Who's grown up and hot? And Ambrose has to save him?? Except Ambrose is so very not at the top of his game anymore and he ends up having another hallucination (except it's not a hallucination and he knows that now) of the Outsider offering him power and because Ambrose can't NOT help the prince, he accepts. BUT HE HATES IT SO MUCH and the only reason he doesn't do something drastic is because he has to keep the prince safe (and the more he travels with him, the more Ambrose realizes that the prince is a genuinely good person).I feel like the Outsider spends a lot of time laughing his ass off @ Ambrose, though. Poor Ambrose.

📖 from @polymathema - What is your favorite book?

Poly this is fucking rude.

I think though, it would have to be one of the Young Wizards series by Diane Duane. I keep returning to them, especially the older ones, especially So You Want to Be a Wizard and Deep Wizardry. Part of it is nostalgia, I first read them in middle school. Part of it is there’s something so affirming about “What is loved, lives”, and the speech in DW about what selfless sacrifice really looks like gives me chills still. I love the whole series of course, the writing is superb - I always think the language can’t get more beautiful in each book and in each new volume I’m proven wrong.

I can’t choose between the two.

I'm really enjoying drawing bats Animal Crossing style. And I prefer them with thick lines. I might stick with this style instead of trying to figure out how the almighty fuck chibis work. Side Note: Rodney is not my character and belongs to Polymathema on furvilla
