No Touching Ground

Feeling super blessed to have worked on this collaboration with Amplifier.  Chantael and I first met Poorna Jagannathan and son Anav and showed them how to paste up posters for Amplifier.  At that time I knew I wanted to document and recreate that experience in the future.  We used these large posters of Tatyana’s for this piece, a series she collaborated with Amplifier on.  The content and meaning of her work remains relevant.  I find making collaborative work to be some of teh most satisfying.  Bringing multiple communities together to create one large vision and to find ways to share the message.  I feel moving forward we need to be working together, working collectively in order to think larger than ourselves.

'Never Have I Ever' Adds New Twist to an Old Coming-of-Age Formula

Trying to overcome the glut of coming-of-age titles, "Never Have I Ever" adds new twists to an old template, thanks in part to Maitreyi Ramakrishnan's breakout turn as a high school sophomore who adapts to a life turned upside down. Nice, funny and often flat-out weird, it is the new series that gives the half-hour comedy format an independent-film sensibility. The semi-autobiographical series, produced by Mindy Kaling, focuses on a first generation Indian-American, Devi, still reeling from her father's sudden death ("Heroes'" Sendhil Ramamurthy, seen in flashbacks). Which leaves her passing through high school dilemmas — among them possibly losing her virginity — while constantly sparring with her mother (Poorna Jagannathan) concerned, and dealing with changing dynamics about her friends (Ramona Young, Lee Rodriguez) she has come to depend on over time. Plus, there is a dreamy boy (Darren Barnet) – whose washboard abs outweigh any communication ability deficiencies – with whom Devi is almost obsessed. This is essentially her version of Jordan Catalano for those who are old enough to recall "My So-Called Life," and if you do not, you can easily find and watch. If you are not sold yet - and frankly that explanation does not do it - "Never Have I Ever" has an irreverent streak that works a lot to his advantage. For example, Devi's story is told by tennis great John McEnroe, who proves to be remarkably good at it, even though he, along with the rest of us, seems a little mystified by his attendance. (It is clarified, eventually.) The circumstances oscillate between the extraordinary and the ordinary, but essentially what sells it all is Ramakrishnan, who strives to be likable, connected and confused all at once — a microcosm of navigating those uncomfortable teen years, with a lot of self-compassion thrown in. All this is further exacerbated by the conflict between the cultural values of her mom and the actual truth of Devi, about as common a theme as one would consider it. It also helps immensely that Devi's mother is a genuinely compassionate and tridimensional character, as opposed to being limited to Charlie Brown's parents' status, as is too often the case. Kaling develops the djpe with Lang Fisher (who also worked on "Late Night,") after a string of network comedies and the movie "The Mindy Project" and it follows a too long list of series and films centered on angst-ridden teenagers. Netflix has basically saturated the market all by itself, with its focus on appealing to different demos. Having said that, there is still space for another strong one. And "Never Have I Ever" continues to exist easily at, or at least near, the top of the chart. "Never Have I Ever" premieres on Netflix April 27.
