can you explain family abolition in a few words?
sure. there is no one unitary 'family abolitionist' perspective so be aware that i'm explaining this as a marxist and not as an anarchist or a radical feminist.
basically, "the family" is a social construct rather than a fixed self-evident truth. the family has been created and can be shaped, altered, or--indeed--abolished. this is evinced by the broad anthropological and historical record of radical transformations in what constitutes 'the family' (cf. clans, the extended family, the nuclear family). viewing the family as such opens it up to critique and also to the concept that it could be replaced with something better (in much the same way that, for communist and anarchist, refusing to accept the timelessness / naturalization of the bourgeois state opens up new horizons of political thought outside of engagement with electoral politics.)
among these critiques of the family are:
that it is a tool of patriarchal control over women and children by creating an economic dependence upon spouses / parents
ergo, that it enables and causes 'abuse' -- that child abuse, spousal abuse, and intimate partner violence are not abberations of 'the family' but in fact a natural consequence of its base premises re: power and control
that it serves as a site of invisiblised economic labour (e.g. housework)
that it is a tool of the capitalist (formerly the feudal) economy's reproduction of inequality via e.g. inheritance laws
that it serves as a site of normalization and reproduction of hegemonic ideology--i.e. that it is the site where heteronormativity, cisnormativity, gender roles, class positionality, & more are ingrained in children
among solutions family abolitionists propose to remedy it are:
the total dissolution of any legal privilege conferred by romantic or blood relationship in favour of total freedom for any group of people to form a household and cohabitate
the recognition of housework, the work of childrearing, & the general tasks of social reproduction as 'real' labour to be distributed fairly and not according to formal or informal (feminized) hierarchies
the economic and legal freedom of children--(i.e., allowing children unconditional access to food and shelter outside 'the family', allowing children the legal right to informed consent and self-determination)
similarly, the emancipation of women from economic dependence on their partners--both of these can only really be achieved via socialism (as marx put it, 'women in the workplace' only trade patriarchal dependence upon a husband for patriarchal dependence upon an employer)
communal caretaking of children, the sick, & the elderly
yeah. i know. this is a lot of words. its not few words. sorry. it's a complex topic innit. this is a few words For Me consideri ng that i've got a long-ass google doc open where i'm writing up a whole damn essay on this exact topic.
tldr: the family is not inevitable, it is constructed & can be replaced with something better. full economic freedom from dependence on interpersonal familial relationships for everybody now. check out cuba's 2022 family code for an idea of what this could look like as practical legislation.

So I may or may not be a little (aka a lot) charmed by all of your characters because, my dear, they are absolutely AMAZING and super charismatic!
and then I found myself wondering how they would react if their darlings got a little depressed about how miserable their social life has become... I mean, how do you manage to keep your mental health up with a total of ONE PERSON in your life?!
I was thinking about this because I'm Brazilian, and we are social creatures ya'know, we NEED other people to keep living and believe me, the pandemic situation DID NOT HELP IN THAT ASPECT OF US. Besides, we are touchy people, we greet each other with kisses on the cheek, long and deep hugs whenever we feel like it and I don't really think the oc's would appreciate our affection being distributed like this 😞 unless is with them, which is totally possible because if we are touchy with strangers, with the close ones we are SUPER lovey dovey.
If you could ease my curiosity about this aspect, I would be very, very happy 👉👈 and I don't mean it's just this specific scenario, just being depressed in general, begging for any kind of normal human interaction hahaha.
Anyway, sorry for this LONG text, this has been on my mind since I started reading your works (and they are AMAZING, really, I'm in love with your writing style!). As I said before, I'm Brazilian and English is not my first language, so I'm sorry for any mistakes 🤗.
Wowow thank you so much for your kind words!! I am so happy you like my yandere OCs + my writing style!! Also, this is a very fun request/scenario, tysm for requesting it :3c Your English is great, please don't apologize!
Here's the answer to your request down below!!
Tumblr media
So, Jiu's case is really interesting because he has the intellect, power, AND money to ensure that he's the closest person to you even if he DOESN'T lock you up. He's basically puppeteering your life from the background while giving you a sense of free will (e.g., you got into your specific college because of HIM, you got your specific job because of HIM, and so on). Getting him to isolate you from society would only really happen if you rejected him/began to distance yourself from him.
If you got too lonely because you could only interact with him, Jiu would cosplay and roleplay any person/character you wanted to in order to give some illusion of diverse human interaction. If you became depressed, he'd get you a therapist and anything else you might need, but... make no mistake, that therapist (while licensed properly) is NOT on your side.
On occasion, Jiu would allow you to interact with his paid workers while he's watching. Like, he'll hire a "friend" for you (who only visits at 11 AM on Fridays) and let you talk to the nanny and stuff, but that'd be it. Now, he'll be controlling your life from the frontlines rather than the backdrop and there's really nothing you can do about it, oops.
For Finley... he's actually a very clueless yandere + extremely pathetic. His emotions are very volatile so he's easy to upset/please. When he isolates you from society, it's because he thinks it's for the greater good. People are so corrupt, can't you see? He's only doing it to protect you. If you got depressed due to only being able to interact with him, he'd just cling even harder to you. After all, you're lonely because he hasn't been spending enough time with you, right (wrong)? For him, he'd understand that you seem sad, but he wouldn't understand why. He's just protecting you! Though, he may get you some pets -- he's VERY partial to animals and likes them quite a bit more than he likes humans.
Oh man, so Tynan has mind magic, so his solution is pretty messed up. He'll either hypnotize you to be okay with your situation OR give you dreams where you interact with people. His dream magic is scary because it's genuinely really hard to tell dreams from reality, so before long, you'll be tricked into thinking you spent time with the people you love when really, you were sleeping on Tynan's lap the whole time.
As for the abandoned water god... he does care about you, but not enough to let you interact with other people, even if you're feeling depressed. After you basically helped awaken him after he was forgotten for centuries, he's super obsessed with you. He doesn't need anyone else as long as he has you, so he thinks that you don't need anyone else since you have him. He'll take you to go see a bunch of sea animals, though! But those sea animals are the only other living beings you'll see. Not to mention that he's practically cursed with immortality, sooo... yeah, you're not escaping him.
Finally, for the farmer... he lives pretty isolated on his big farm anyway, so if you're his neighbor, you're already kind of isolated from everyone else. The farmer isolates you by making you dependent on him so you'll stay by his side willingly rather than locking you up. For the most part, he'll actually let some people (who are not romantically interested in you) visit you -- in fact, he actually doesn't mind it if your family visits because they all adore him (and it's so so so cute to see them tease you about how you must be dating him). But woo boy, you are very very very rarely going to be able to leave the farm. Issues crop up one way or another: blocked road, punctured tire, empty gas tank, etc... so, really, you can't leave. Unless, well, he escorts you. But it might just be better to stay on the farm since it's much more convenient, you know?

Writers Guild West Official: Era of Hollywood Mergers Hastened the Strike
August 10, 2023
Laura Blum-Smith, the Writers Guild of America West’s director of research and public policy, considers the strike a result of a tsunami of Hollywood mergers that has handed studios and streamers the power to its exploit workers.
“Harmful mergers and attempts to monopolize markets are a recurring theme in the history of media and entertainment, and they are a key part of what led 11,500 writers to go on strike more than 100 days ago against their employers,” Blum-Smith said on Thursday at an event with the Federal Trade Commission and Department of Justice over new merger guidelines unveiled in July.
She pointed to Disney, Amazon and Netflix as companies that “gained power through anticompetitive consolidation and vertical integration,” allowing them to impose “more and more precarious working conditions, increasingly short term employment and lower pay for writers and other workers across the industry.” But she sees revisions to the merger guidelines that address labor concerns a key part of the solution to prevent further mergers in the entertainment industry moving forward.
“The FTC and DOJ’s new draft merger guidelines are part of a deeply necessary effort to revive antitrust enforcement,” she added. “Compared with earlier guidelines, the new ones are much more skeptical of the idea that mergers are the natural way for companies to grow. And they focus more on the various ways mergers hurt competition, including how mergers impact workers.”
In July, the FTC and DOJ jointly released a new road map for regulatory review of mergers. They require companies to consider the impact of proposed transactions on labor, signaling that the agencies intend to review whether mergers could negatively impact wages and working conditions. FTC commissioner Alvaro Bedoya, who was joined by agency chair Lina Khan, said in a statement about the guidelines that “a merger that may substantially lessen competition for workers will not be immunized by a prediction that predicted savings from a merger will be passed on to consumers.” Historically, transactions have been considered mostly through the lens of benefits to consumers.
The guidelines lack the force of law but influence the way in which judges consider lawsuits to block proposed transactions. They also tell the public how competition enforcers will assess the potential for a merger’s harm to competition.
Antitrust enforcers have steadily been taking notice of negative impacts to labor as a result of industry consolidation. “We’ve heard concerns that a handful of companies may now again be controlling the bulk of the entertainment supply chain from content creation to distribution,” Khan said last year during a listening forum over revisions to the guidelines, in a nod to anticompetitive conduct by studios that led to the Paramount Decrees. “We’ve heard concerns that this type of consolidation and integration can enable firms to exert market power over creators and workers alike.”
Adam Conover, writer and WGA board member, said in that April 2022 forum that his show Adam Ruins Everything was killed by AT&T’s acquisition of Time Warner in 2018 when TruTV’s parent company forced the network to cut costs. He stressed that a handful of companies “now control the production and distribution of almost all entertainment content available to the American public,” allowing them to “more easily hold down our wages and set onerous terms for our employment.” It’s not just writers that are impacted by an overly consolidated Hollywood either, he explained. After Disney acquired 21st Century Fox in 2019, he said that the studios pushed the industry into ending backend participation and trapping actors in exclusive contracts preventing them from pursuing other work.
Blum-Smith said that aggressive competition enforcement is necessary as “Wall Street continues to push for more consolidation among our employers despite the industry’s history of mergers that failed to deliver any of the consumer benefits they’ve claimed that left writers and audiences worse off with less diversity of content and fewer choices.”
“More mergers will leave writers with even fewer places to sell their work and tell their stories and the remaining companies will have even more power to lower pay and worsen working conditions,” she warned. “Strong enforcement against mergers is essential to protect workers in media and workers across the country and these guidelines are an important step in the right direction.”

I kinda wanna ask since reading you dancestor post on what we're the positives of each of the alpha trolls.
They can't have been completely terrible people, especially in the beginning.
Can do!
Damara: Used to be genuinely kind (and we still see her act sweet to the humans, with whom she has no beef). If her party had given literally a single solitary shit about her and tried to be nicer/more inclusive/didn't just stand by and let the bullying happen and stay friends with Meenah, she would've stayed that way.
Witches have great direct control and manipulative abilities over their aspect - it's implied the ultimate culmination of feferi's arc would've been equalizing the lifespans/psionics of all trolls, and jade is terrifyingly powerful even if she wasn't green sun-powered. It's implied that damara directly caused the ectobiology glitch in her session, directly changing Time (while dave and aradia appear to be beholden to its loops), so if she'd self actualized in a good way, there literally would not have been any "point of no return" for her party, and it's why her corruption IS her party's point of no return
Rufioh: He's a genuinely nice guy, he just lets his fear of responsibility fuck him (and everyone around him) way the hell over, and his terror of being the "bad guy" in a situation leads to him being a much much worse guy overall (he can't bring himself to break up with horuss because he reaallly doesn't want to hurt horuss's feelings, so we can assume him not telling damara about the affair is for similar reasons. but inaction is in itself a harmful choice, and to justify the harm he causes by his inaction, he has to dig himself deeper into a hole of shirking responsibility, until he literally starts going "idk why damara's upset" and "you know how she is, jealous and crazy").
Breath is an aspect of leadership, freedom, and independence, and rogues specialize not only in distributing their own aspect, but also in stealing their aspect from other entities in a way that buffs them in the opposite direction (for example, roxy can steal the void from something in order to make it exist). Thus, Rufioh at his best would not only be a leader in a breath-y way, but would be able to steal the breath from people in a way that boosts their unity and group cohesion - like he did as the Summoner. Unfortunately, that would be scary, and would require actually taking a stand on something.
Mituna: He was fucking correct about his team being assholes headed for disaster, and his team definitely should've listened to him! Ultimately, no matter how offensively he worded things, i believe that the fact that he WAS constantly trying to warn his team was done out of genuine concern and a place of care. Unfortunately, his team went "fuck you mituna" and now he has brain damage.
Not only were Mituna's Doom-inspired prophecies something his team definitely should've listened to, but Doom is an aspect associated with commiseration and empathy, in contrast to Life's oftentimes callous focus on solutions, moving forward, and trampling everything in its path. Had he tried to approach his team less from the lens of "you assholes are doing everything wrong, i'm going to call you slurs until you stop" and more from the angle of "hey, tell me about the bad shit that happened to you, let's feelings jam on that and come to a mutual realization that casteism dicks us all over," he probably would've seen more success.
Kankri: I do genuinely believe that there was a part of Kankri, deep down, that did actually care about equality and his friends. We see it peek out when he lists what he likes about Latula, this sincere appreciation for who she is as a person that mirrors Karkat at his best. Unfortunately, in his desire for control and blinded by his massive ego, he instead became a mouthpiece for the worst parts of his society, a binding force of status quo.
We know what Kankri at his best is: the Signless. If he were at all able to get over his Seer-associated massive ego, desire for attention, and self-inflicted blindness (his celibacy), he would be the ultimate guide to a genuinely equal society of kindness and compassion, not to mention healthy interpersonal relationships, as per Blood's provenance over bonds. Blood players possess a natural sense of responsibility, duty, and empathy, which, unfortunately for everyone, for Kankri flipped over into controlling behavior. It's sad, because he could've been good. They all could've been good.
Meulin: Meulin's not a bad person, genuinely; she's more on the side of being screwed over than doing the screwing over, though she does a fair bit of the latter as a result of the former. It's obvious that she came with a lot of Nepeta's better traits, initially - kindness, sweetness, sincerity - but that these have been stomped over, and her own inability to comprehend a healthy relationship has led to her inflicting shitty relationships on everyone else.
Heart governs feelings and the self, and mages can directly invoke a chosen future, although they can only invoke a future they believe in. Meulin as the Disciple is an example of what she could've been for her team - it was her records of the Signless that kept his legacy alive long enough to set Karkat up with a symbol and a lusus. Had she been treated with more kindness, and had people noticed her unhappiness, perhaps she would've been a matchmaker for good, instead of evil, leading her team to show each other more empathy, kindness, and forgiveness.
Porrim: I would call Porrim the most benign of the dancestors, primarily because she doesn't even really seem to know wtf is going on. Her views on feminism are correct, she's generally well-respected, and holds influence within the party. the problem is, she was so blinkered and tunnel-visioned that she mostly ended up being a super-bystander, like i don't even know if Porrim knows about the Damara situation? You'd think she'd say something if she did.
Space has associations with cycles, renewal, and interconnectivity, and Maids are great at managing and doling out their aspect - to the point where a common thread with the other two maids, Jane and Aradia, is this idea of them being "shadow leaders" (as opposed to knights, who take on more frontline/spotlighted roles). Had she been able to get her head in the actual game, instead of running wild on her tangent, she could've effected massive, actual change in her party, keeping them together and united, the center of their interconnected group. Alas.
Latula: Latula's become so entrenched in her shitty facade/quest for "identity" that she can't even acknowledge her own good points anymore. As Porrim points out, she's actually very intelligent and clever, and as Kankri points out, she's genuinely a hemoequalist and doesn't hold prejudices against peoples' blood colors. She's also an excellent judge of character, given her comments on Aranea; it's really too bad about the fact that she's dedicated so much of herself to her "gamer grl" "identity" that these traits have become deeply buried.
Knights struggle with deep insecurity, but are incomparable party leaders when they're able to get over it; Mind players are experts at understanding the chains of karma, cause and effect, cognition and behavior, and influencing outcomes by manipulating the people around them. A knight of mind at full capacity would be an incredible force of party leadership, able to easily mediate between conflicting parties and nudge teammates into working together and doing what the knight wants. Latula never exercises this power, however.
Aranea: A lot like Kankri, I do believe that there's a genuine kindness and compassion buried in Aranea... deep down. She does genuinely want to be helpful, and her exposition is usually factually correct, even if she can't keep her biases and poor judge of character out of them. I refer back to Aranea's explanations all the time, that's how much they actually do help in understanding the world. Unfortunately, those exact biases are the problem, and what a massive problem they turn out to be!
Sylphs are healers, nurturers, and protectors, but they have a massive empathy problem. Aranea's descriptions and showcases of her own abilities mean she 100% could've healed Mituna, Latula, Meulin, and/or Kurloz at any point, at least before they all died, and she chose not to, because she was too busy fawning over Meenah and not giving a shit about the "non-main characters" on her team. Given Light's associations with knowledge and comprehension, I wouldn't even be surprised if she could've endowed Damara with an auto-translator of some sort - if she, y'know, cared.
Horuss: There's... a lot about Horuss that's pretty odious, but at least you can say that he had a lot of genuine talents, and, as a Page, a lot of potential. Huge amount of potential. A lot like Equius, Horuss also does genuinely have a polite and helpful streak in him, though it's, unfortunately, massively tempered by his shitty beliefs - which, again like Equius, are mostly the result of mistaking fetishes for societal truth. If the people around him cared enough to take him to task for his shitty actions and shitty beliefs, he would probably fold like paper. Unfortunately, nobody bothered to do it.
That incomparable potential of a Page, and the simplicity associated with Void, could've made Horuss a deeply stabilizing force in the party, had they nurtured him to grow Void's uncomplicated nature, rather than allowed him to backslide into light-esque overcomplication. A page running at full tilt can overpower even lords - with the power to banish things directly into the void, horuss at full strength might have been capable of just soloing the bosses - especially since the dancestors had no LE to deal with. Alas.
Kurloz: Though they wind up perverted in pretty unforgivable ways, and even before that, were implied to be not particularly healthy relationships, the vibe is that Kurloz did have genuine care and affection for the people he was close to, Meulin and Mituna. This also implies that he was not actually casteist before his turn, especially seeing as he appears to be close enough with Damara that he was able to influence her religious views. He was likely, as with all Princes, a deeply troubled and complicated individual, but he was by no means unsalvageable.
And let's be so fucking for real, Princes kick ass and take names, that is what they are there to do. Rage is the power of literary criticism/impotence, the vital wellspring of revolutionary emotions and the ability to emphasize or deemphasize elements of the "narrative" to influence a desired outcome; honestly, it's probably one of the strongest possible Prince combinations, being capable of destroying not only unproductive ideas and party conflict, but of the concept of narrative impotence itself. literally what could've stopped him?
Cronus: Yeah I'll go to bat for Cronus. If you can look past his shittier actions, he's genuinely one of the most stable and level-headed members of the team. While he is utterly complicit in casteism, unlike the rest of his team, who turn a blind eye, he's willing to just say it as it is, and he's literally the only person on the entire team who's able to make Meenah have misgivings about the Condy's awesomeness/reflect on her own shitty actions. There's a refreshing sincerity to him that's sorely lacking from the rest of his poser-ass team, and it's a positive quality that I wish his team had nurtured, rather than Kankri grinding it into dust in the name of getting into Cronus's diamond.
Bards cause the first flap of a butterfly's wing that cascade into massive karmic victories or defeats, and Hope is a power that makes fake things real, turns impossible things possible, and outright defies the power scale. Had he manifested in a positive direction rather than a negative one, their team would've done some crazy shit. Alas, as-is, he's implied to be the origin of Kurloz's pivotal nightmare, and things only went downhill from there.
Meenah: Granted, I have few kind things to say about Meenah, but I guess objectively, she is "cool". People on her team do genuinely like and respect her, and she is an asskicker objectively, and I do think there are some positive motivations present in her story if you squint - like, I don't disbelieve Aranea when she says Meenah was trying to goad her shitty team into taking action, as this is consistent with what Meenah also says and thinks, but I'd call this motivation "overwhelmingly irrelevant" in light of the genuine cruelty she displayed.
Thieves are provacateurs, shakers of the status quo, and Life is a force of healing and forward motion. If anyone on Meenah's team (besides a Cronus being actively dampened by Kankri) had truly called her out and held her responsible for her bullshit and awfulness, and had she done any introspection and taken any accountability for her terrible actions at all, she may have seen some genuine success in her attempts to get her party to do something - especially given that Life is a healing force, like their Sylph, and if Meenah weren't so fucking selfish, she might've actually been able to do some good.
The thing is, the dancestors have some really solid fucking classpect pairings - while I don't believe there's any such thing as a "bad" classpect pairing, bard of hope, prince of rage, knight of mind, maid of space, rogue of breath, witch of time - these are honestly pretty cracked, and the others on the team are still pretty powerful. Moreover, their life on beforus left very few of them with the brain-breaking trauma that plagues the alternia team, so in a lot of ways, they were set up for success - and they squandered it.
By the time we meet them, they are all at their worst, and there's a tragedy in the fact that you can see the shadows of a really solid fucking team, had any of them chosen kindness and compassion before they reached their point of no return. but they didn't, in any timeline, and now here we are, with an evil time travelling wizard demon of fascism breathing down our necks.

Being held gently by a giant alien mech might not fix me, but - no, actually, it would. Because sometimes we are all just soft and scared mammals who want someone strange and powerful to be gentle with us. Or someone strange and powerful we can be gentle with.

okay, so im a brainrotted freak, and ive had p.AI.nter on my mind for a while. naturally, i gave the bastard a body! here ya go!
rant/art dump below the cut
first off, p.ai.nter is a short king. mostly because i like the aesthetic, but its also convenient for him! it takes less resources to keep his body going! i imagine he would also wanna be smaller so that he could be more intricate with his art.
Tumblr media
now, because he is mobile, the power source becomes an issue. hes an old computer! how does he survive unplugged ?!
well, here, i introduce the wonderful world of BATTERIES!
p.ai.nter would have a battery somewhere in his core, which would be how he keeps himself charged. that also means i get to give him a little cord tail! (for charging purposes, of course.)
i also am giving him a second tail, just for funsies. he deserves a USB drive with his conscience in it. he connected to other tech in the blacksite, so he should be able to keep doing that! because it was a very SAFE and FRIENDLY action on his part!
Tumblr media
maybe angsty, but i think that p.ai.nter finds humans a wee bit gross, especially after everything that happened to him. why would he wanna be human shaped?
he wants something mobile and appropriate for a human-dominated world, of course, so he needs to have arms and a torso—but he wants his machinery to be obvious, if that makes any sense. no exposed wires (he is not stupid), but flashy metal bits, visible joint segments, yap!
now, building off of that, p.ai.nter would prefer a bird-like shape to his legs. he would definitely need to go through some manner of physical therapy in order to pilot his new body, and so he needs legs that inherently provide for more balance!
therefore, an excuse to give him anthro legs.
Tumblr media
considering how much art p.ai.nter will probably begin creating, he wants something that doesnt stain easily.
a small problem : he doesnt like the look of dark paint! it doesnt match his monitor, and thats awful!
so, he resorts to covering clothes.
p.ai.nters shirts would need to be oversized and flowy to accommodate for his THICK AS FUCK head. so that he can actually put them on without stretching them out, of course.
therefore: oversized sweaters, long skirts, and aprons!
fucking GOLDEN! housewife looking guy! funky!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
p.ai.nter wants to be MOBILE! theres so much to do and see! hes been locked down for years, how could he waste a perfectly good body ?!
he has several jointed segments in his torso to aid in movement and rotation, and his limb joints are made out of pliable metal tubes.
it also aids his precision in art! its easier to get clear views without body parts in the way and whatnot.
note: p.ai.nter settled on having five fingers per hand, despite insisting he wanted four for stylistic purposes. five fingers are ideal for human equipment, hes pretty sure.
now, you might be thinking, this guy has a lot going on. does he not overheat? hes a sentient brick?
there is a solution : air holes and internal fans!
a few strategically placed holes cover p.ai.nters body to aid in natural ventilation. its kinda like breathing!
inside of his body, cooling fans are centered in his chest and limbs. they distribute the air more evenly.
he really overheats when hes trying to do too much, such as controlling several devices or thinking about too many things at once!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
now, for the behavioral headcanons :
painter has a LOT of fun toying with his new body. he goes on leisurely strolls sometimes, because hes previously never been able to.
his art will improve a lot upon receiving a body! having a new sense of autonomy would be a serious upgrade for him, and he would have many new ways of living. it wouldnt be AS dull to be a sentient AI in an abandoned facility.
he might go find ellies painting and stare sadly at it, though—i assume this theory still holds up? right? please?
sometimes he mimics the faces of other people on his monitor! like, he might draw sebastians eyes and mouth, and just uses that face to talk to him sometimes. as a means of teasing or affection. (he could probably do this before getting a body, but having a body definitely gives him the energy to do silly things like this!) pretty good way to find out how he sees your face, too.
despite p.ai.nter overheating when he runs too many tasks, hes a chronic multitasker! he tries to make the most of his new body, and hes often forced to sit back and slow down.
painter tried to convince his builder—most likely sebastian, with his engineering major and all—to let him have turrets on his arms, but that could become problematic with p.ai.nters mental state, so he agreed to have fake turrets for stylistic purposes only! he likes to keep them on his forearms and thighs, secured with straps that can be taken off. he enjoys pointing them at things and pretending to shoot stuff—which is EXACTLY why he doesnt get to have real guns.
and, after all this buildup, who would i be to not provide some full pictures? <3

Herald of Asmodeus: Basileus
Tumblr media
CR 15
Lawful Evil Medium Outsider
Inner Sea Gods, pg. 278 (though the picture is from Council of Thieves: Mother of Flies, pg. 79
Yes, Medium sized. You see, Basileus is NOT the terrifying, diabolic apparition with multiple snakes emerging from it, but the tiny figure settled in its ribcage. Crafted from the very essence of Hell itself to fill Asmodeus’ lofty expectations--expectations which spelled death for at least six other Heralds before--Basileus represents the power of Hell incarnate, which includes the ability to cow any lesser being nearby into submission with nothing but a look. While his Veil of Forms normally keeps his true nature hidden from onlookers and makes him look attractive to anyone who can see him, he can raise or drop this comforting veil as a free action to wreak unholy terror on everyone that draws too close... but we’ll get to that later. First, a bit of background!
Basileus (or “Basil,” as I’ll be calling him from here on out) is Asmodeus’ perfect doll, crafted from Hell’s essence and, some say, the best parts of his past Heralds, all of whom disappointed him in some fashion. For a tyrant who desires absolute control, the only solution he would accept is the creation of a being who would follow his orders without question, hesitation, or creative interpretation. Basil does exactly as Asmodeus commands, following orders in accordance with both their spirit and letter with an efficiency that rivals machines, and thankfully for the mortal plane, these orders usually have him serving as an envoy and diplomat between Asmodeus and other powers across the Great Beyond. He is explicitly stated to rarely ever step onto the Material Plane, and even then only long enough to complete a task which directly benefits Hell and its infernal master. He tolerates mortals in the same way a sculptor tolerates dust and stone shards all over the floor, in that dealing with them is a side-effect in the process of creating something worthwhile, but they’re ultimately waste to be brushed aside and disposed of the instant the main project is finished, and certainly nothing to cozy up to and talk with. Basil’s contempt for mortals is one of his most famous aspects, to the point that even Asmodeus’ own followers hesitate to beseech their god for his Herald’s assistance, seeing the diabolic abomination as a last resort despite the power he offers his summoners, which includes the ability to grant a Wish once a day... but only for a mortal.
There is some delicious irony in Basileus having the most powerful spell available to him 1/day, a power no other Herald approaches, but he can only use it on the very mortals he despises. No matter how pitiful their lack of imagination or careless their wording, this power belongs to them. Unfortunately, he’s quite clever in manipulating people into getting what he wants out of their wishes, and only grants them in accordance with Asmodeus’ desires anyway, so the irony isn’t AS delicious as it could be.
Despite being a glorified mailman in terms of purpose, Basil nonetheless embodies perfection in every respect, both physical and mental: He possesses the strength to bend iron with his bare hands (26), arrow-dodging levels of dexterity (22), an indestructible constitution (25), staggering intellect (26), and enough charisma to clash with the most boisterous personalities and lay them low at his feet (25). The only stat of his that’s lower than 20 is his Wisdom, sitting at a 19. While many Heralds have one or two of his stats beaten out, no other Herald has such towering ability scores across the board, truly showing off Asmodeus’ craftsmanship... pity that he falls short in many other areas including, ironically, his hit dice. Though he has a nearly-unequaled stat distribution, he actually has less HD than the average Herald at 16, whereas most have 17 or 18 (though Sunlord Thalachos and the Menotherian both have 15 for whatever reason).
Of course, such flaws in his form aren’t evident to anyone not looking directly at his statblock. To everyone in-universe, Basileus is something like an advancing wall of death, something to be desperately avoided at all costs, because coming too close to the Herald of Hell may see one slain before they can even draw their weapon.
As previously mentioned, Basil normally hides behind a Veil of Forms, a specialized illusion which makes him look attractive to whomever is looking at him, regardless of their individual tastes and preferences. If he cannot be attractive then he will appear powerful instead, and oftentimes he combines the two... just not intentionally. Basil has no control over what onlookers see, nor does he gain any supernatural insight into whatever they’re seeing, and truth be told he doesn’t really care (if he did, he has a +23 Sense Motive to try and hash it out). The more important part is what happens when he drops his veil.
Basil can raise or lower his veil as a free action on his turn with no limit, allowing him to lower it and expose his true, diabolic form just enough to focus his crushing Gaze onto a creature within 30ft before raising it when that poor victim drops to the floor, dead as a doornail. You see, any being subjected to his Gaze must succeed a DC 25 Will save or be subjected to the illusory sight of the most terrifying thing they can possibly imagine, a sight so overwhelmingly horrifying that any creature with 6 HD or fewer is slain instantly if they fail the save, while everything above the threshold becomes irrationally panicked for 2d4 rounds if they fail, and REGARDLESS if they pass or fail, victims take 6d6 points of damage from the strain of seeing their worst fears brought to life before them. While he normally uses this power to snuff out a select creature like a candle, in pitched combat he can simply leave the veil down, blasting everyone around him constantly as long as they keep looking at him; the damage and panic recur every round a creature remains within 30ft of the Herald of Hell while also looking at him, as there is no 24 hour immunity clause.
You may notice a couple harsh limits to this otherwise overwhelming power: A strict 30ft limit, and victims must be able to see him. So long as you’re either keeping your distance or keeping your eyes closed, his terrifying gaze can’t affect you, and he lacks any ability which explicitly punishes a creature trying to blind-fight him like Sneak Attack... though this isn’t to say that the embodiment of Asmodeus’ will can be beaten by simply closing one’s eyes, no. He has plenty of other tricks up his horrible, horrible sleeves.
First and foremost is his least impressive aspect, his melee: Basil can cause horrible wounds to open up on any creature he touches, inflicting 1d8+8 damage. This is less than impressive, especially when stapled to his Medium-sized frame, but he has other options. Five of them, in fact! When his veil is down and his true diabolic body is exposed, he produces five additional, monstrous limbs which can slam anything within 15ft of him for 1d8+8 damage each, making his melee offense much scarier. However, this isn’t where he truly shines. No, his magic is the scariest thing about him.
As a being of illusions, Basil has quite the menagerie of illusion spells. At-will, he can use False Vision to prevent people from scrying on him or anyone he’s talking to, Mirage Arcana to shape the terrain to his liking, and Persistent Image for basically whatever distraction he needs. At 3/day, he can use Phantasmal Killer to terrify someone outside his 30ft aura of terror to death, but more dangerously he can use Greater Invisibility 3/day, which prevents him from using his lethal gaze but combines in a bad way (for everyone else) with his supernatural 60ft flight speed, his natural +25 to Stealth, and the rest of his offensive prowess, mainly consisting of his melee slams and his at-will Scorching Ray for any distant foes.
Cheating is only fun when the devil does it, so of course Basil can both Greater Teleport at-will and use Ethereal Jaunt 3/day BUT he has Dimensional Anchor to prevent anyone else from doing it. Likewise, all of his illusory power can be defeated with True Seeing, so he has THAT available at 3/day, and Greater Dispel Magic besides to destroy whatever spells or effects he cannot maneuver around. It’s especially fun to shuck buffs off anyone trying to fly up and harm him or use spells to make themselves immune to fear (his Gaze is a mind-affecting fear effect, so immunity to fear prevents the entire thing!), fire, or poison.
Poison? Oh yes. I forgot to mention the poison, didn’t I? It’s the very first spell you’d see in his statblock, as well! Cloudkill. At-will. The mist covering alone would be valuable enough, but the poisonous cloud slaughters anything too low-HD for him to care about in a single breath while sapping 1d4 Constitution slowly but surely out of everything else. Immune to poison himself (and Fire, but that’s besides the point), Basil can spray Cloudkill in every direction and even in his own space without fear every single round, and it makes trying to fight him through his Greater Invisibility all the more dangerous, as the twisting mists further hide his movements. And as mentioned, he enjoys cheating, which is why he has Blind-Fight for himself when he battles in his own poisonous clouds, giving him a much higher chance to actually connect with his melee or Scorching Rays than he’d otherwise have.
Basileus is a terrifying and potentially frustrating foe, often able to spell the end of a battle as a free action just by lowering his veil and blasting the entire party with 2d4 rounds of panic and 6d6 irresistible, typeless damage which will continue to grind down anyone not completely immune to fear. Then, when everyone is fleeing screaming from the awful thing, he fills their spaces with Cloudkill, blasts them with Phantasmal Killer or Scorching Ray, or simply LEAVES with his teleport or jaunt. The guy is a jerk, but you have to admire his efficiency; every other Herald needs at least one standard action on their turn to send the whole party packing!
You can read more about him here.

Allies, Pt. 11
The Lanteans are on a conference call with the wraith queen who seems to be unsatisfied by the delivery system McKay had to cobble up in record time to distribute the virus -- a project with which he had been involved not at all previously. McKay, that is, had been asked to weaponize the virus that Beckett had originally intended for "curing" the wraith from what he had called "an unnatural state." The wraith queen is making demands on them and they in turn are all quite literally turning to McKay for a solution to the problem, are looking for McKay to come up with something that would keep their wraith "allies" from disclosing their location to all the other wraith. McKay sounds justifiably irked as he promises to come up with something, feeling like he has so many times before that saving them is falling on his shoulders and his shoulders alone.
Tumblr media
McKay: OK, OK. I will figure something out. But no more holding back. I want to know everything there is to know about hive ships: schematics, power distribution, life support configurations, everything you've got. Wraith Queen: Then you shall have it. McKay: For real?
As mentioned, not holding back is something that McKay seems to be doing himself in this situation, not bottling up his emotions but letting them show, letting his frustration show instead of trying to hide it from Sheppard like he has for most of the season. But at the same time, McKay wishes that Sheppard would likewise not hold back from him but let him in on the things that are eating him up inside. If McKay had been bottling up the resentment he felt toward Sheppard's actions, Sheppard had been hiding the concern and worry he felt for McKay, had tried to keep McKay from seeing how hard he was working on keeping McKay safe. It seems like "no more holding back" was good advise for the both of them, and in this episode we do see both of them incrementally learn to let go of control, of trusting one another.
McKay demands to know everything while not actually expecting the wraith to share their secrets, and we may note that again when he is having to argue for his science, for his theories, for his place in the world, McKay comes across as competent and in control. He seems more surprised than anyone that the wraith actually agree to give him access to the data, and for a moment he looks like a lost child, not knowing where to go from here because he had been ready to argue his case for much longer.
Note also that we see the wraith queen give the command to one of her crewmembers by nodding her head, not saying anything in words. While it is of course possible for the other wraith to simply read her expression, we may recall that the wraith have a psychic network and seem to communicate with each other mentally, and the queen giving this command non-verbally is the same as McKay understanding what Sheppard had just been telling him without using his words. We may also note that we had started the episode with McKay whining that Sheppard wanted everything and now he is asking for everything himself, so it seems that at the end of the day they both do "like everything." It was never that he resented Sheppard wanting everything from him, providing Sheppard gives him life. It is just that complaining is a way of getting attention from Sheppard, which he also craves.
Tumblr media
Chuck: Receiving transmission. Weir: Make sure it's secure. McKay: Yeah-yeah-yeah, we're completely firewalled. Let me see that. Oh! She actually did it! I mean, this is the motherlode Weir: What is, exactly?
The wraith queen sends in the data and we see McKay quickly move to the terminal to skim over what had been sent. Notable here is that McKay has to turn away from Sheppard instead of turning toward him, like we usually see them turn, because they are standing so close that having swivelled toward Sheppard would have put him right up against Sheppard's body. They are standing that close. There is more space between McKay and Weir for him to turn.
Weir advises caution like she had previously when the wraith had sent them data, and in his excitement to get his hands on the data McKay brushes past her concerns. The wraith manage to send in a virus with the data -- and we should recall that we had started the season with the wraith virus seeking to reveal their location to the wraith in The Intruder (S02E02). This had been the first time that we saw McKay and Hermiod working together and like in this scene, we had seen McKay tell an "Airperson" to get out of his way so that he could take a look at it. They had the following discussion about it then:
McKay: In all likelihood it was transmitted in a compressed format -- it took a while to unfold, to spread to the point where it could adversely affect our systems. I think it probably happened during your return flight to Earth. Since then, it's been dormant, waiting for some kind of a trigger. Sheppard: Like what? McKay: Possibly the fact that we're once again in proximity to wraith territory? I think it was ultimately designed to take control of the navigational system -- fly the ship right to them. Weir: If they get their hands on the Daedalus, they'll not only have access to the intergalactic hyperdrive technology but they'll have all the navigation data that'll lead them straight to Earth. McKay: That's what they wanted all along. A new feeding ground.
This brings the episode into conversation with the start of the season, creating a ring composition to the narrative. It is likely that they downloaded the virus to the Lantean systems here in a compressed format, and it took a while for it to unfold and affect their systems, and what the wraith had been looking for all along was access to intergalactic hyperdrive technology and navigation data to lead them straight to Earth.
However, even though the virus was downloaded here, it does not mean that it was here that the virus was released into their system or that it was McKay's fault, his over-excitement over the prospects, that ultimately doomed them. He says that they are firewalled here, and it is possible that the wraith would have been unable to make use of the virus if they had kept it on this terminal. But later on, they have the entire science corps working on the data, they have distributed it across several terminals and we even see Zelenka transfer data from one computer to another, so the virus infecting their systems is not McKay's fault -- at least not entirely (albeit, as the leader of the science corps, ultimately). But it is true that he seems excited here and that he is throwing caution to the wind because he is keen to start working with it, his fingers itching to go through all the data. But there is definitely an element of contrapasso here, of McKay winding up paying for his own mistakes by the end of the episode.
McKay pushes the Canadian gate technician out of his way and this action too has a comedic beat to it. It is McKay being McKay. And it is true that when he is under a time element that he is often impatient in getting people out of his way because there are times when all of their lives depend on him being able to execute some action in the nick of time -- as seen prominently e.g., at the end of Critical Mass (S02E13). As we had seen in the previous episode where Zelenka had put up the shield immediately upon getting the command from McKay, the people of Atlantis have learned to do as he says, to get out of his way when he nudges them, are not expecting him to be polite. Later on in McKay and Mrs Miller (S03E08) Sheppard describes Rod as someone who says "please" and "thank you," implying that he is the opposite of McKay in this. McKay does not say please and thank you. And it is entirely possible that it is witnessing scenes such as this that makes Sheppard feel like it is true when in truth we frequently hear McKay say both "please" and "thank you." He seems to use them reflexively like the Canadian that he is -- much more frequently, in fact, than Sheppard himself.
McKay just seems to feel like there is a time and a place for being courteous and trying to save everyone's life is not that time. Often he also says the words "please" and "thank you" in a tone that may make the recipient feel like he does not actually mean what he says, which may also contribute to Sheppard feeling this way. The important thing here is that even though Sheppard has definitely made note of this, even though he is well aware that McKay is not perfect, this is not and never has been a deal-breaker to him. And, as noted previously, it is Sheppard himself who we hear say both words much more infrequently, and he has a known tendency to project his own faults on other people. Regardless, McKay sending the Canadian technician rolling away on his swivel chair is amusing and serves to distract the viewer from this being the moment that the wraith get one over them.
McKay's use of the term "motherlode" in reference to the data is somewhat curious, especially when we had just been told that the wraith had sent them "everything." A prospecting term, the motherlode refers to a large vein or principal supply of something but not to the totality of something or the sum of everything, which is what McKay is actually meaning. Given that McKay is not a prospector, it is possible that he uses the term with little regard to the connotations but it is a curious choice from the writers because, apart from being the name of a famous gay night club in San Francisco, Motherlode was also a Canadian rock band whose hit single When I Die seems appropriate to where Sheppard and McKay are in their relationship right now:
When I die I hope to be A better man than you thought I'd be It's been hard to make you see What kind of man I'm trying to be All I ask for you to try To understand what it means to me It's not hard to understand why you Get discouraged all the time I keep trying not to worry, but I Can't help feeling lost in you But I love you Love you And I need you Time goes by and you'll find That we'll achieve a love sublime
Connecting his mention of the motherlode to the lyrics might seem like a stretch if not for the fact that both McKay and Sheppard seem to quote songlyrics to each other later on. Regardless, it is fitting for the occasion. But then they hit us with a much more obvious reference:
Tumblr media
McKay: Only everything you've ever wanted to know about wraith technology but were afraid to ask! Weir: Why are you doing this? Wraith Queen: We have suffered extensive damage. Weir: We could render assistance. Wraith Queen: You would do this?
McKay's response to Weir's question here is interesting, and this one is a clear and obvious reference. McKay is making an intentional reference but why he does it in character and what the writers are trying to communicate with the reference can be different things. The explicit reference is to the 1972 film Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex* (*But Were Afraid to Ask), one of Woody Allen's best-known features, and while there are questionable things connected to both him and the film, it belongs to the canon of North American popular culture. While McKay may have seen the film, and surely has heard the title that has been lampooned hundreds of times in different contexts, it is possible that he is not thinking about the film at all here. He is just feeling elated and hence came up with a funny way of answering Weir's question, probably intending nothing by it.
Of course he may have seen the film, and he may even have read the book of the same name it is based on (1969, by David Reuben) because even though it came out when he was still a baby, it was a popular sex manual and perused by people for a long time. The book is... problematic, and yet its popularity was a part of the sexual revolution of the 1960s, of liberating attitudes regarding sex. There are things written about homosexual people and gay sex in the book that are unfortunate but at the same time, it was the first contact many regular people had with homosexuality, where ordinary folks were made to think of gay people as people instead of as predators and reprobates.
It is by far not a progressive book by today's standards and the author himself even updated some of his views later, but it is a book that contains information on homosexuality, gay sex, gay culture and even gay slang and lingo at a time when this information was difficult to come by, when there was no internet a young boy could hop on to figure things out and even libraries did not hold volumes that would have answered their questions. It was many people's first contact to the concept of homosexuality, and while it is certainly not an endorsement of homosexuality, for many curious gay youth it would have been the first place where they got to read about gay sex, how it happened, what kinds of things you could do with another man, where you could meet other people who were like you, what the gay underground was like, what kind of language they used.
It is not accidental that they make the reference to this book because, as discussed in connection with Michael (S02E18), the writers of the show have flirted with the concept of conversion therapy in several episodes and have connected it with Sheppard in particular, weaving it into his tragic backstory. Given when Sheppard was born and the social class his family belonged to, it is entirely possible that he might have been forced to undertake conversion therapy in the early 1980s, during the Reagan administration and the height of the AIDS epidemic -- many young men were. Reuben wrote about conversion therapy:
Couldn’t homosexuals just be born that way? A lot of homosexuals would like to think so. They prefer to consider their problem the equivalent of a club foot or birthmark; just something to struggle through life with. This explanation is a little tragic. It implies that all homosexuals are condemned without appeal to a life some of them say they enjoy so much. Actually for those who want to change there is a chance. How? If a homosexual who wants to renounce homosexuality finds a psychiatrist who knows how to cure homosexuality, he has every chance of becoming a happy, well-adjusted, heterosexual.
This was a commonly held view when Sheppard and McKay were growing up, and it took a lot of time and effort to educate people to see gay people as people. As discussed previously, the therapy even seemed to have worked on Sheppard, at least for a time. He had tried "not being wraith," he had married a woman and joined the most homophobic branch of the US military, he had made every effort to live life on the straight and narrow. In Outcast (S04E15), Sheppard tells his ex-wife: "Well, in his mind, marrying you was probably the best thing I ever did," and if wealthy industrialist Patrick Sheppard had used a lot of his money, power and influence to make sure that his son was "cured," it is easy to see why he would have thought that Sheppard marrying a woman voluntarily had been the best thing he had ever done. But Sheppard was not happy. His ex-wife mentions him taking on the kinds of missions married men are not sent to during their marriage, which tells us that he was deeply unhappy.
It is interesting that the way McKay makes the reference is by replacing the word "sex" with "wraith technology" here, especially because in the very next scene we get an exchange between Sheppard and Zelenka where they talk about reading about sex as a kid in connection with the wraith data. Sheppard volunteers the information that when he had been a kid and got his first encyclopedia, he had started with the letter S, which Zelenka interprets as meaning Sex. Even more curious is that Zelenka actually uses the word "sexuality" instead of sex, as though it had been sexuality that Sheppard had been reading about when he was a kid and got his first book with information on sex. Sex is a taboo subject and so of enduring interest to boys and girls that are reaching maturity. They understandably want to know more about it, and the sex ed of boarding schools in the 1970s likely left a lot to be desired.
And it is especially if and when a boy had questions about sex and sexuality that could not be answered by traditional sources of information, that he could not ask his father about, that it would make sense for Sheppard to have wanted to read about it. Sex is a topic that interests Sheppard, he seems to think about it a lot. He may have thought about it a lot when he was growing up and because he would not have had many role models, would not have had neutral sources of information, it is easy to see how it would be confusing for a boy trying to figure out what sexuality means for him. Teenage years are confusing to everyone but adding to it the lack of information on non-normative sexual orientations and growing up in a social environment where it was condemned, figuring out who he was and what he liked must have been very difficult.* There would have been things about sex he had wanted to know and literally had been afraid to ask.
And for better or worse, Reuben's book was a source of information where many people, both straight and not straight, had their first contact with the topic. It is possible that McKay had read it. It is likely that Sheppard had read it, and it might even be something his conversion therapist would have made him read. And what we are reminded of here is not only that sex is a thing both Sheppard and McKay partake in, but that both of them may have strange ideas and hang-ups related to sex and same-sex relationships that would result from them being misinformed in their adolescence. For a variety of reasons, the two of them have to work much harder to make their relationship work than heterosexual couples, and there are bound to be misunderstandings. The wraith queen admits that they have suffered "extensive damage" here, and that is also true of Sheppard and McKay. They too have suffered extensive damage in their own ways, and this is why the importance of allies, of having people around them who know about their relationship and support them, is so important.
The film that McKay references is a comedy and there is once more a comedic beat to his line here, the happy look on his face disguising the darker implications of the reference.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Weir: We're supposed to have an alliance, aren't we? Sending information on wraith technology was a remarkable act of good faith on your part. Wraith Queen: Your assistance would be... acceptable. Weir: Alright, then. We have a deal.
McKay occupies himself skimming through the data they had been sent while Weir and Sheppard continue their chat with the wraith queen, albeit Sheppard is not saying anything, having said nothing at all after seeming to accidentally snap at the queen and then place himself between her and McKay. As Weir continues negotiating with her, we may note that Sheppard has not moved to stand one inch closer to Weir but instead occupies a space where he blocks the queen's view of the room behind him, of where McKay is bent over a laptop.
We see that Sheppard seems to be making some effort to keep himself calm by how he closes his eyes, how he lifts his chin and takes a deep breath, and it is possible he needs to do this because he seems to realize -- correctly -- that it will be McKay who is asked to make these repairs to the hive, on the hive, as their foremost expert on wraith technology. Three weeks ago Sheppard would not have even considered allowing McKay to go on an occupied hive, especially not without him, but it seems very much like the Lanteans and the wraith are not the only ones with an alliance, that Sheppard and McKay have formed an alliance of their own where they are making every effort of being supportive of each other. They too have made some kind of a deal that has required good faith to be acted on both of their parts. Sheppard may not be happy about it, but he is happy to see McKay happy. It had been a while since he had seen McKay happy like this.

"When I was 13, I secretly read my parents’ old copy of Dr. David Reuben’s Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex, first published in 1969. Standing nervously at the bookshelf, I was poised to replace the volume quickly if I heard footsteps. The chapter on homosexuality explained, “The homosexual must constantly search for the one man, the one penis, the one experience, that will satisfy him. He is the sexual Diogenes, always looking for the penis that pleases. That is the reason he must change partners endlessly. [In gay marriages] the principals never stop cruising. They may set up housekeeping together, but the parade of penises usually continue [sic] unabated… Mercifully for both of them, the life expectancy of their relationship together is brief.” My face went hot with embarrassment.
I know now that the book was blithe and stupid, but I think many people, gay and straight, assume gay men are worse at maintaining relationships than straight people are." [x]

Common Electrical Issues That a High-Quality Current Transformer Can Prevent
Tumblr media
In today’s fast-paced industrial world, electrical reliability is more crucial than ever. A small error in current measurement can lead to serious system failures, downtime, and costly repairs. This is where high-quality current transformers (CTs) make a huge difference. But what exactly can a superior CT prevent? Let’s dive in.
What Is a Current Transformer?
A current transformer (CT) is an essential device used to measure alternating current (AC) by producing a scaled-down, manageable current for meters, relays, and other instruments. It enables safe monitoring and accurate metering in high-voltage environments, protecting both equipment and personnel.
Common Electrical Problems a High-Quality CT Can Prevent
1. Overloading and Equipment Failure
Problem: Without accurate current measurement, systems can easily become overloaded, causing motors, transformers, and cables to overheat.
How a CT Helps: A precision CT ensures real-time, reliable current monitoring. It detects overcurrent conditions immediately, allowing protective relays to trip and prevent expensive equipment damage.
2. Inaccurate Energy Billing
Problem: Incorrect current readings can lead to wrong billing, causing businesses to either overpay for energy or face disputes with utilities.
How a CT Helps: High-accuracy CTs provide precise energy data for billing and cost allocation, especially critical in commercial complexes, factories, and power plants.
3. Protection Relay Malfunction
Problem: If a CT delivers incorrect signals, protection relays may not operate during faults, leading to extended damage and system blackouts.
How a CT Helps: Reliable CTs ensure protection relays receive the correct fault current levels, enabling fast and accurate circuit isolation.
4. Short Circuits Going Undetected
Problem: A minor fault can escalate into a full-blown short circuit if the protection system doesn’t detect it early.
How a CT Helps: Quality CTs capture even small fault currents, triggering alarms or shutdowns before damage spirals out of control.
5. Phase Imbalance Issues
Problem: Imbalanced phases cause excessive heating, motor inefficiency, and damage to sensitive equipment.
How a CT Helps: High-precision CTs monitor each phase accurately, enabling detection of phase unbalance conditions early and preventing system inefficiencies.
6. Harmonic Distortions and Power Quality Problems
Problem: Harmonic distortions interfere with the performance of sensitive equipment and reduce the overall power quality.
How a CT Helps: Specialized CTs can detect abnormal waveform distortions, enabling corrective action through harmonic filtering or load balancing.
Why Invest in a High-Quality Current Transformer?
Accuracy: Achieve metering-class precision essential for both billing and protection. Durability: Longer lifespan even in harsh industrial environments. Safety: Better insulation, thermal stability, and overload capacity. Compliance: Meets international standards like IEC and ANSI.

Cost vs. Quality: What to Consider When Investing in Switchgear
Tumblr media
In today’s energy-intensive world, switchgear plays a critical role in managing power distribution safely and efficiently. Whether you’re upgrading your industrial facility, building a commercial plant, or powering a large infrastructure project, choosing the right switchgear is not just a technical decision — it’s a strategic investment. One of the most common dilemmas buyers face is balancing cost vs. quality. So, how do you decide?
Understanding Switchgear: The Heart of Electrical Safety
Switchgear is a combination of electrical disconnect switches, fuses, or circuit breakers used to control, protect, and isolate electrical equipment. Its primary role is to ensure the reliability and safety of your power system.
Types of switchgear include:
· Low-voltage switchgear (for commercial and residential use)
· Medium-voltage switchgear (typically for industrial applications)
· High-voltage switchgear (used in power transmission)
Investing in the right switchgear directly impacts operational continuity, personnel safety, and overall infrastructure reliability.
The True Cost of Cheap Switchgear:
While it’s tempting to opt for budget-friendly solutions, low-cost switchgear often comes with hidden risks and long-term expenses.
Inferior Material Quality
Cheaper models often use substandard materials that degrade faster, leading to frequent maintenance or early replacement.
Safety Hazards
Low-quality switchgear can result in arc faults, insulation failure, or overheating — putting workers and equipment at risk.
Increased Lifecycle Costs
Although the initial price may be low, the total cost of ownership (including downtime, repair, and energy inefficiency) is usually higher.
Limited Scalability and Customization
Budget systems are often rigid and harder to scale as your facility grows or needs change.
Why Quality Switchgear Pays Off
When you invest in premium switchgear, you’re not just buying a product — you’re buying peace of mind.
Enhanced Reliability
High-quality switchgear is engineered to perform in extreme conditions and handle high fault levels without compromising performance.
Superior Safety Standards
Reputable brands comply with international standards such as IEC, ANSI, or UL, reducing liability and improving workplace safety.
Ease of Maintenance
Well-built switchgear is modular and user-friendly, simplifying diagnostics and minimizing downtime during maintenance.
Energy Efficiency & Smart Capabilities
Modern switchgear includes IoT sensors, real-time monitoring, and predictive maintenance features, ensuring optimal energy use and proactive problem resolution.
Key Factors to Consider When Choosing Switchgear
When evaluating switchgear options, balance cost and quality by focusing on the following:
1. Application Requirements
Understand your voltage class, load types, and fault current ratings. Quality should match your operational demands.
2. Brand Reputation & Certification
Look for trusted brands with certifications like ISO 9001, CE, or IEC 62271. Positive reviews and case studies add credibility.
3. Lifecycle Costs
Don’t just compare sticker prices — consider maintenance, service availability, spare part costs, and expected lifespan.
4. Customization & Flexibility
Choose systems that can evolve with your operation. Modular designs support upgrades and expansions more efficiently.
5. Support and Service
Ensure the manufacturer provides robust after-sales support, technical training, and warranty services.
Cost vs. Quality: The Bottom Line
When it comes to switchgear, cheap is rarely cheerful. Cutting corners today can lead to outages, hazards, and hefty repair bills tomorrow. On the other hand, investing in high-quality switchgear ensures operational resilience, safety, and long-term savings.
The smartest strategy? Aim for value, not just price. Evaluate switchgear as a long-term asset, not just a one-time purchase.
Trending Tip: Think Smart and Sustainable
With rising energy demands and climate-conscious regulations, smart and sustainable switchgear is trending. Look for:
