I've always wanted to create a dnd campaign that involved court intrigue, where the players could try to play different sides against each other, but I don't have a good idea of how to do it, and any time I've asked for advice all I received was "your players are going to wreck everything don't even try lol." Do you have any advice on how to run a game like that?
Some of my compatriots here would jump on you and tell you to play a different game, but not me. No, since you said you wanted to involve court intrigue, I think Auntie Viv might have some wisdom for you.
Before I dive into the subject of courtly intrigues, different factions that players can play against each other have a natural habitat in D&D: the dungeon! If your underworld includes several groups of monsters, there can be all sorts of political interplay between them.
But let's say you want to spice up your game with some proper court intrigue. I say spice up, because if you want that to be the focus of your game, you really might want to look into other games that will support what you want to do better. But I certainly think such activities have a place in D&D, the game about gaining temporal power. If you're starting at level 1 or thereabouts, the characters probably won't be powerplayers yet. They'll more likely be pawns, or merely get glimpses of the true machinations of the Great Games of the Lords. But that doesn't mean you can't involve them. Have NPCs in the starting town be part of factions, either openly or secretly, and make interacting with them have consequences in the Great Games.
Then as the party levels up, make sure they gain not only in personal power, but also in political power. Give ways for players to integrate their characters into your world. Not knowing the particulars of what you have in mind, I can only give general advice, but think of at least one way each class can invest in the setting. Rogues may join or found guilds, fighters can be given forts to command, clerics can be given positions in the local temple, and so on and so forth. This will gradually involve them in the Great Games, and if you've made them care about things beyond their character sheets, you'll have ways to curb their worst excesses. If they threaten the king, the king can do way worse than deal damage to them: he can mess up their holdings.
As for the intrigues themselves, map out your factions and their goals. You should have some idea of what the various sides will do over time without player interference, and don't be afraid to roll with the punches when the party inevitably swerves things off the road. So if the king's trusted vizier, Baron Doomshadow, is funding bandits to disrupt trade along the King's Road, you might have a timeline of how the bandit activity ramps up. But if the players get involved in solving the bandit problem, have some contingencies for Baron Doomshadow to respond with.
Most importantly, integrate intrigues into the main activity that D&D supports: adventuring. Because at the end of the day, that's what the characters will excel at most no matter how they're built.
And don't be afraid to check out some game that's actually built for intrigues anyway, because it might have some neat tips and tricks you can use.
I hope any of that helped!

oh my god why are there no wof rp servers that I actually like 😭 they either allow powerplayers, fan tribes, have a shit owner, are dead, or just don’t interest me. I’m like really picky I guess lmao. I eventually gave up looking and just started my own (I think we have around 70 members now and it’s fun) but I want to be able to roleplay without ALSO having to moderate (<- says creature who applies for moderator every chance they get)
anyway rant over it’s not AS much a problem with servers as is it with me being picky (I have had a few. REALLY bad experiences with warrior cats servers, but not as much with wof)

Adventure: The Siege of Frostmanse
A hero takes up arms against a powerful frost giant mage, threatening to destabilize the realm and forcing the party, their allies, and the powers that be to start choosing sides.
For generations Ylnriig the Argent has provided council and arcane insight to kings, jarls, and champions alike, seeking to maintain some measure of calm across the rugged land and icy seas that neighbour her home. Songs are sung about the great wonders she has performed, but also the great prices she has exacted in the name of keeping the peace: Plagues halted by burying villages in ice, destined dooms averted by the noble sacrifice of innocents.
Songs are also sung about Rothger Redsail, and his Redsail raiders. Brave beyond recounting, this living legend and his viking crew are said to have toppled foreign thrones, drunk mead with stormgods, and even sailed over the edge of the world. Now Rothger is back in his homeland and he has no qualms about what his next voyage is to be: He aims to sail against the giant and topple Ylnriig's head from her shoulders, so that the people might never pay her terrible price ever again.
Setup: This scenario works best if the party has a good impression of both Ylnriig and Rothger early on. Trophies from the Redsail's travels hanging in the tavern, local monuments to where Ylnriig averted some disaster through magical might or cleverness. Have the markets flooded with wonders offloaded from Rothger's latest viking expedition, while the town fountain runs with healing waters after being blessed by the giant's own hand. Neither side of this conflict is strictly in the wrong, and both give much to the world simply by their existence.
Everything changes when Rothger sails back into harbour and starts laying the groundwork for his attack on Ylnriig's home, securing supplies and new recruits for the Redsail Raiders, hobnobbing with the local power players to ensure they support his actions. Initially he'll keep the goal of his next expedition secret, boasting to the masses only that his next mission will deliver them into a time of prosperity and opportunity that neither they or their direct forebears could imagine.
Adventure Hooks
Facing some great challenge, the party might be sent to petition Ylnriig for aid, being forced to make the trip to Frostmanse, her isolated sanctum nestled among the far fjords. The ice giant may seem to give them the cold shoulder, sending them off on some wizardly errand as payment for her involvement, but after some time enjoying her hospitality the party may come to know Ylnriig as the deeply caring scholar that hides beneath her shrewd and utilitarian exterior.
Early on, the party might be tempted to join the Redsail Raiders. Doing so would greatly boost their credibility, and give them backing and direction that they'd normally miss out on as independent sellswords. Doing so will likely require that they prove themselves to the hardened sailors of Rothger's warband , but that's what apprentice level adventurers do isn't it?
Eventually a secret long buried will come to light: More than a score of years ago Rothger and Ylnriig used to be lovers, their relationship as passionate and tempestuous as where volcanic flow meets glacial ice. Rothger was off on one of his grand adventures when plague broke out in his home village, a plague that could only be staunched through drastic magical intervention. Ylnriig ran the numbers, and make an awful but nessisary choice that saved tens of thousands while dooming Rothger's family and clan to a cold and awful death.
Though Rothger's animosity towards Ylnriig is genuine, his actions are being backed by a coalition of powerplayers throughout the region who consider the Wizard's continued meddling an impediment to their ambitions. If he succeeds, they'll be able to enact schemes and settle scores that've stayed idle for generations. If he fails, they'll have a martyr to rally support around, as they make a second attempt to oust the giant.

La Squadra Esecuzioni playing Dungeons & Dragons, a meme
(English translation under the pictures)
As previously stated, this is NOT an headcanon. It's just... a mixture of a meme and a tag yourself. So please, don't come at each other's throat or something equally awful, thank you🫶🏻
Tumblr media
- Forever DM
- Mostly because he hates the party doing anything except for what he wants them to do
- He also hates DMing because the party always takes the only path he didn't plan and takes two sessions to buy a dagger at the smith, but no one ever wants to DM so he has to do it
- Or, worse, have Prosciutto as DM
- His DCs are 56 high or more when he doesn't want the party to take certain routes
- Spoiler, it happens almost all the time
- He sometimes let Prosciutto DM
- He DMs canon campaigns because he doesn't want to take the effort to make up his own setting
- Sometimes he DMs original one shots
- Melone made him hate the bard
Tumblr media
- Rule lawyer
- He knows even the Monster Manual by heart
- He intervenes to correct both the DM and the players about rules but nobody asked him to most of the times
- He is hated for that
- Very focused on builds, he lets them to lead him in his choice for the character options
- He tried all the classes and knows them all by heart
- No one wants him as DM because he doesn't allow anything that isn't explicitly written in the rules
- And also because he allows mutilations on the PCs when they make a critical fail in combat or the enemies strike a critical hit
- Sadly Risotto is sometimes too energy drained to DM so players have to deal with him as DM
- He DMs canon campaigns ONLY
- However he has interesting ideas for his characters
- A pity his roleplay is shit because he never changes expression or voice tone
- He bullies people who use D&DBeyond
Tumblr media
- He constantly forget the rules
- He always makes his character's backstory shared with Prosciutto's character one
- Sometimes Prosciutto doesn't want to be paired with him so he has to find someone else
- He never played a character with an independent background
- He owns 57 pencils, 49 rubbers, 35 miniatures, 26 dice sets and always offers to print other people's character sheets
- Of course he's always willing to lend his stuff
- He's the eternal exploited one because Formaggio sponges even his chair
- He's secretly a dice hoarder but he'd never admit that
- He actually doesn't like playing D&D that much but he enjoys the company
- His characters all have social anxiety
- And they're all discriminated races
- Caster main
- He's terribly unlucky with dice rolls
- He once rolled a double 1 with Advantage
Tumblr media
- Powerplayer, metaplayer and every worst kind of -player
- Cheater
- He always gets caught cheating and his character usually dies horribly... if Prosciutto is the DM. Otherwise, Risotto thanks him for passing that ability check that twelve people were able to fail
- However, he always pays attention to the session and takes notes... that he never shares
- He either plays a wizard to mock other characters' low intelligence or he plays a fighter to mock their low strength and prowess in battle, No in between
- He endlessly recycles the same characters
- His character is always rival with Formaggio's one for some reason
- He fights with Formaggio to play the fighter
- Despite everything he has the best strategies
- He cares little for roleplay, he's more into builds
- His characteristic points are never lower than 15
Tumblr media
- Constantly late for session
- He never has what is needed for the session and "borrows" anything from Pesci
- He stole half of La Squadra's dice sets and lost every single one of them
- He and Ghiaccio fought really hard because of that
- And in fact now the only one lending him anything is Pesci
- He uses the smartphone during session
- He never took notes and never remembers shit
- "Wasn't this asshole the miniboss?" (they defeated the boss 8 sessions earlier)
- He is a terrible tactician but he comes up with crazy plans that somehow work in the end
- Extremely lucky with dice rolls
- His characters' names come from the IKEA catalogue but he regularly forgets them
- Pesci doesn't know the rules but Formaggio doesn't even know which game they're playing
- Fighter main
- The story is slow to proceed because of him doing offgame jokes all the time
- He brings amazing snacks though, he even cooks when he feels like it
Tumblr media
- Bard main
- His PC is an excuse to flirt with friends
- Where Prosciutto played every class, he played every race
- Everybody hates the bard because of him
- He prefers roleplay to builds
- And, in fact, his PCs are all weaklings because he chooses builds because "it seemed cool by name and concept" but never actually read what they do or how they work
- His character is always the first one to run out of HP in combat
- Mostly because he's been able to make the DM hate his character during the campaign
- He's the only one encouraging Formaggio's crazy plans
- All his dice sets are glittered
- He never used the canon character sheets, only fanon redesigns
- He decorates them with markers when he's bored during session
- He's the one who is most into the campaign
- He draws other players' characters and funny scenes from the campaign
Tumblr media
- Barbarian main
- He fucked up some campaigns because he charged the NPCs that glared at him
- He shares his notes only with Melone
- He goes nuts if something disturbs the session like the ringtone of the phone or a door slamming violently
- He sometimes encourages Formaggio's crazy plans
- He hates the stereotype of the stupid barbarian and tried hard to avoid that in his characters
- He never played a caster because he can't choose among so many spells
- He bullies the ranger because he thinks it's too situational
- He makes good builds
- The fact that Melone is totally unable to make decent builds drives him nuts
- But he can't resist helping Melone's character when they get in trouble
- Trouble that was caused by Melone's character themselves, by the way
- He always plays the same alignment
- He fights with Illuso's fighter because the both want to do the tank
- He played the paladin once but he became an Oathbreaker at level 1 because he cursed his own deity
