Some super cute stuff I saw at Claire's today

I was revising and thinking about some of Anakin/Vader’s scenes with Tarkin in ANH, and I think there’s an interesting detail in there with regard to them and the Death Star.

When Tarkin threatens to destroy Alderaan, Leia appears to give up the Rebellion’s base, and Tarkin says:

“You see, Lord Vader, she can be reasonable.”

That’s a kind of weird remark, if you think about it. It might just be an empty rhetorical flourish, of course, but to me, it sounds more like a gloating “I told you so.” If that’s the case, it implies a separate conversation about holding Alderaan over Leia’s head, in which they disagreed.

Later, when it turns out that Leia lied, Tarkin is shocked!! and outraged!!! and Vader twists the knife by saying:

“I told you she would never consciously betray the Rebellion.”

Speaking of I-told-you-sos.

So they definitely seem to have disagreed about this. It’s not like Vader is on the side of the angels here; he ruthlessly works to recover the plans, stands by while the Death Star kills millions of people, and defends it in battle. At the same time, when you consider his earlier open contempt for what he terms “this technological terror,” it is intriguing that he finds reasons to voice opposition.

Mira Ong Chua's Goodbye Battle Princess Peony was my most anticipated comic this year and the digital version finally released this week.

I read the whole thing in two days & loved it. Here's why you should buy & read it:

* hero/villain sapphic romance going from enemies to lovers

*dark fairytale storyline with a happy ending

*strong magical girl anime influence, esp. Revolutionary Girl Utena

*great character designs with fantastic outfits

*energetic, beautiful art that coveys action and emotion

Here is a helpful(?) guide to the current [presumed] ‎Khaenri'ah factions. Sorry Kaeya's section is a bit confusing because there is a bit of a rift between Kaeya's current status and the presumed motivations of the group that he came from. Also obviously several of these factions might actually be working together (especially those unknown ones).

“Save the Cat” is definitely another one that’s in the running for my #1 fave SPOP episode slot. I’ve watched it so many times, but it never gets old.

There’s Catra’s struggle against the chip, with the vacillations between the imposed serenity and her real, ongoing suffering, there’s the great fight scene, there’s Adora reaching out to her and Catra trying to accept it this time (T_T), Adora jumping into an abyss after Catra, their character designs at their most adorable (I think a good 75% of my screenshots are from this ep alone), and of course, Adora’s first full She-Ra transformation since the sword broke, and into a vastly superior version of her (her S5 glow-up is a hell of a glow-up). Her “you miscalculated” is such a satisfying moment (as is “make it quick”).

But despite my love of the new form and the acrobatics, my fave moment from the episode is Catra waking to find herself in Adora’s arms, managing a weak “hey, Adora,” and then her response to Adora’s ecstatic hug:

There are other things than Catradora in the episode, of course—Glimmer is great, Bow and Entrapta are delightful (I love her little squeaks and laughs), and my beloved Wrong Hordak gets his introduction here, too. But it’s definitely the Catra/Adora/Catradora content that kicks this one up to such a high spot for me. It’s great.

If I had a penny every time princess bubblegum and Marceline talked about their feelings and had a tender moment while trapped in a cave, only to be interrupted by a monster crashing in and causing the cave to start collapsing, I'd have two pennies, which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice

What’s your POV on the villains from Princess Charm School? Do you see them as good villains (like, if their plans actually worked would they be considered good villains) or do you see them as bad villains (like, their plan could never work in 1,000 years and even if the plan did work it’s a stupid plan.) like do you basically see them as “comedic relief” villains?

Well, Dame Devin came dangerously close to actually succeeding, so by this definition she would have to be a good villain. I also hate her with every fiber of my being, so that's another sign. In no way is Dame Devin a comedic relief villain. She's never played for comedy in the movie at all, and in the novelization it's actually worse bc it shows Delancy being actively being afraid of her. Not only is Dame Devin a murderer, but she wants to actively ruin the lives of Gardania's poorest citizens for the sake of the aesthetics of the city--like a lot of real world politicians. She's cruel in a very real way, and it is not funny, even if her apparent motivation of not being chosen for a job back in high school could be considered kind of silly. But she murdered (at least) two people over it, including her brother, and she thought she also killed a literal baby. How could that ever be funny?

As for Delancy... She spent a year bullying Sophia for being poor, and that's really gross of her. Bullying is really a "child-friendly" term for targeted harassment and abuse, and I absolutely think it should be taken seriously. But her mother is clearly a piece of work, so it's not really surprising that she turned out that way. And she does reform, but she's at the beginning of her redemption arc at the end of the movie, so as much as I love that transformation for her... She spends most of the movie sucking. So, in that sense, is she a good villain? I'd say so, altho I'd call her an antagonist rather than a villain, given how it all shakes out. And she's also not a literal baby murderer like her mother, so I mean anything other than that is a step up.

I like Delancy a lot for her growth, but I refuse to just gloss over what she did to Sophia for a lot of the movie, again, motivated largely by the fact that Sophia was a commoner... AKA, one of her future subjects, and she treated her like that. She'd be a nightmare as a queen, if that's her attitude, and yes that was heavily influenced by her mother, but at what point would she have rebelled if she hadn't overheard the conversation at the portrait? Would she have? Or would she have continued to play Dame Devin's puppet and parrot her beliefs for the rest of her life? It's a lot to think about, and again, I refuse to not talk about what she did and what it says about her, even if she's different now. Anyway that's tangential, mostly in reaction to background radiation from deranged Delancy stans who think she's some kind of mean girl icon when it's like no, she was doing real damage, and she would have continued in that vein forever if not for perilous serendipity. If you like her at all, you have to acknowledge that. If you like Dame Devin, you will die by my sword. That simple.

AMAZING SUYALIGHT CONTENT THIS WEEK. The chapter starts off with the princess thinking Twilight’s about to get duped by some strange offer, so she resolves to follow after and protect him - this leads to them entering… a sauna?

Suya is totally frantic in trying to keep him safe from harmless things the whole time, even telling him to abandon her if it means he can escape.

The most critical thing to note, I think, is that her ‘trying to obtain a good rest’ isn’t brought up at any point. No!! Instead she’s trying to fight it off, and starts smacking herself to stay focused.

Then it’s revealed that Twilight planned on the Princes enjoying the sauna all along as he recognized that she’d been working just as hard as him, and believes that helping each other like this is an important step in humans and demons coming together.

With that Suya is finally at ease, having been reminded that Twilight is someone she can have confidence in.

IT WAS BEAUTIFUL.
