All it is are costumes and putting on a performance. The primary difference is that it's got roots in the Queer community and most (but not all Drag artists) are queer and often trans in particular. There's no inherent sexual aspect (though many performances can be). The "We're Here" performance I attended recently had no sexuality other than drag kings (who were both trans masc) exposing their chests, and I believe silicone chest plates at that. There were a bunch of kids in attendance and they just liked all the flashy costumes and glitter, same as they enjoy on a princess costume.

Is all drag family friendly? Hell no, but making it illegal to perform or wear ANY drag in places where children might be is a en extremely slippery slope to going back to banning "cross dressing", which includes persecution of trans and GNC people.

An attack on drag is an attack on all of us and the freedom to express yourself. Legislation about self expression is what led us to Stonewall in the first place.

The raid did not go as planned. Standard procedure was to line up the patrons, check their identification and have female police officers take customers dressed as women to the bathroom to verify their sex, upon which any people appearing to be physically male and dressed as women would be arrested. Those dressed as women that night refused to go with the officers. Men in line began to refuse to produce their identification. The police decided to take everyone present to the police station, after separating those suspected of cross-dressing in a room in the back of the bar. Both patrons and police recalled that a sense of discomfort spread very quickly, spurred by police who began to assault some of the lesbians by "feeling some of them up inappropriately" while frisking them.

If you're not advocating for drag and cross-dressing, you don't understand the history. I don't know how to explain to you that defending the right of a cis man to wear a dress is essential to fighting against transphobia.

Been feeling a bit introspective, and just really wanted to say that I am so grateful for the parenting style my parents chose. The more I see in life the more I realize how lucky I got. Not to say they were perfect, there are a few things that I have learned not to do like them, but in a few ways they made some really critical choices that I wish some of my friends had benefited from.

They worked hard not to let their fears become my fears. My mother is terrified of snakes, so when I was growing up, she got me a special access membership at our zoo. Sometimes they would bring out giant pythons as education animals, and my mother, scared and trying very hard not to show it, would sit in the farthest corner of the room from them with a smile on and tell me to have fun petting the snake. When I had a birthday party at the zoo, she was right there to get pictures of the zookeepers showing me how to hold Corn Flake the corn snake.

They focused on kindness from the very beginning. Not to have the most medals, or biggest friend group, or highest grades. When they found out they were having a baby they had a discussion and decided that the number one thing they would try to raise me to be was kind; to others and myself. When they realized I was upset over getting a less than perfect test score, they started to celebrate Bs as much as As (which really helped my perfectionist tendencies). They always made sure I apologized to anyone I’d hurt, whether intentionally or unintentionally, and understood how I’d hurt them. They never forced me to continue anything that I didn’t enjoy.

They realized that I needed to be a part of my own raising and included me in decision making. When they told me I needed to be 16 before I started dating, I asked them what made 16 the magic number (I was about 13 at the time). They didn’t say “because I said so,” or give me any arbitrary reason. They took the time to talk it over, and then let me know that I had a point that there was nothing magic about suddenly turning 16. They adjusted it to, as long as I showed that I could be responsible, I could choose to date. (Ironically, I still didn’t choose to have a boyfriend until I was 16).

They were more concerned about me learning to handle things safely than setting down the laws. My first alcoholic drink was sharing a glass of rosé wine while baking cookies with Mom. So if anything happened when I had my first drinks, they knew I was somewhere safe, rather than sneaking drinks someone’s older brother bought us.

They wanted to make sure I had boundaries, but not limits. Anything I showed interest in, they offered to let me try a course or a club. Dad would play Pretty, Pretty Princess with me, do science kits with me, and take me camping. He taught me how to countersink a screw and use a circular saw, and came to see all of my performances in ballet and opera. Mom has made an effort to understand every geeky thing I’ve gotten into, even if she found it strange and it took her a lot of time, wether that’s going from thinking cosplay was weird to complimenting the styling I did on my wig, or thinking comics were odd to becoming a marvel fan herself. I’m really proud of her growth. And they’ve always respected my privacy.

So I know I’m really lucky. I’ve got a great relationship with my parents, and it keeps improving because all of us work on listening and learning from each other. I just really wish that this could be the case for more people
