Τα μεν γαρ άλλα δεύτερα αν πάσχη γυνή, ανδρός δ’ αμαρτάνουσα, αμαρτάνει βίου.* - Euripides *Other misfortunes are secondary for a woman, but if she loses her husband, she loses her life.
Queen Anne-Marie of Greece is the widow of the late King Constantine II of Greece, who reigned from 1964 until 1973. She was born Princess Anne-Marie of Denmark on 30 August 1946.
Anne-Marie is the youngest daughter of King Frederick IX of Denmark and his wife Ingrid of Sweden. She is the youngest sister of the reigning Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and cousin of the reigning King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.
Tumblr media
In 1961, she spent a year at an English boarding school in Switzerland - the Chatelard School for Girls. In 1963, to improve her French, Queen Anne-Marie attended a Swiss finishing school, 'Le Mesnil', until the Spring of 1964. She also speaks Greek, English and of course Danish.
Queen Anne-Marie first met King Constantine of Greece as a young girl in 1959, when he visited Copenhagen on a journey to Sweden and Norway, as Crown Prince, with his parents, King Paul I and Queen Frederica.
She met him again in Denmark in 1961. He had declared to his parents that he intended to marry her.
On 14 May, 1962, Crown Prince Constantine's elder sister, Princess Sophia, married the Spanish Prince Juan Carlos in a double ceremony in Athens at the Roman Catholic Cathedral and the Orthodox Cathedral.
More than 100 royal guests came to Athens, and Princess Anne-Marie was a bridesmaid. Queen Frederica of Greece recorded that, at the reception, her son Crown Prince Constantine 'would dance only with Anne-Marie'.
In 1963, centenary celebrations of the Greek Royal Family began with a State Visit from Princess Anne-Marie's parents, King Frederick and Queen Ingrid of Denmark.
In March 1964, King Paul I died after a short illness, and Constantine succeeded him to the Greek throne.
Tumblr media
King Constantine came to the throne with much goodwill, which was expressed in abundance when, on 18 September 1964 (six months after his accession) he married his beautiful Danish Princess in what was described at the time, as 'the most radiant of Athenian royal weddings'. Even an old republican, the 76 year old Prime Minister, George Papandreou, was seen to be enjoying himself thoroughly with the bride and bridegroom.
Queen Anne-Marie devoted much of her time as Queen of Greece to 'Her Majesty's Fund'. This was a charitable foundation started by her mother-in-law, Queen Frederica. It helped people in rural areas of Greece and supported crafts such as embroidery and weaving. She also worked closely with the Red Cross, and various charities.
On 21 April, 1967, political problems in Athens intensified with the Colonel's coup. A month later, Queen Anne-Marie gave birth to Crown Prince Pavlos at the family's country estate, Tatoi.
In December, after his attempt to restore democracy failed, King Constantine and his family left Greece from Kavalla for Rome. With the King, the Queen and the two children were King Constantine's mother, Queen Frederica and his younger sister Princess Irene. They landed at a military airport in Italy because they were running out of fuel.
Tumblr media
Queen Anne-Marie and her family stayed first at the Greek Embassy in Rome for 2 months and then took a house at Olgiata on the outskirts of the city.
Later in 1968, they moved to 13, Via di Porta Latina - where they lived until 1973. On 1 October 1969, Queen Anne-Marie gave birth to Prince Nikolaos in the Villa Claudia Clinic near her home in Rome.
In 1974, Queen Anne-Marie moved with King Constantine to England, after a brief stay with her mother in Denmark. King Constantine had been officially deposed by the military Government on 1 June 1973 and a Republic declared by colonel Papadopoulos.
The family's first home was in Chobham in Surrey. Then they moved to a house in Hampstead in North London, where they have lived ever since. Queen Anne-Marie calls it her 'Home away from home'.
Queen Anne-Marie's family grew larger with the birth of Princess Theodora at St. Mary's Hospital, Paddington, in London on 9 June 1983, and Prince Philippos on 26 April 1986.
Queen Anne-Marie helped to start this remarkable bilingual educational initiative in 1980. She is now Honorary Chairman of the school, and devotes a lot of her time to it.
Her first visit to Greece since she left with her family in 1967, was for a few hours, for the funeral of King Constantine's mother, Queen Frederica, in 1981.
Queen Frederica died suddenly in Madrid. Her wish had been to be buried beside her husband, King Paul, at the family estate at Tatoi. The family was given permission to attend - but could not spend a night in their country. They landed at a little airfield near Tatoi, and were welcomed by large crowds. It was, for Queen Anne-Marie and her family, a moving and sad occasion.
Tumblr media
She visited Greece again with King Constantine and her family on a private visit by sea in 1993. They went, 'Not knowing what to expect. Wherever we went, people came out to greet us. It was extraordinary and very moving'. It was the first visit for her younger children.
In 2013, The Greek government allowed the ex-monarch to come back to Greece. Constantine returned to reside in Greece. He and his wife Anne-Marie purchased a villa in Porto Cheli, Peloponnese, residing there until they relocated to Athens in the spring of 2022
Wherever they were in the world, Queen Anne-Marie was a constant source of support and stability not just for her exiled husband but also their five children. She made sure that the family spoke Greek at home with all her children learning to be fluent.
She was the one also the family retained close links with all the royal families of Europe - and particularly with the British, Spanish and Danish Royal Families.
Queen Anne-Marie's father, King Frederik IX of Denmark was an accomplished musician and she has inherited his love of classical music - Beethoven, Bach, Tchaikowsky, Wagner. She has always been fascinated by historical biographies.
Tumblr media
She had been, above all, the greatest support to her husband over many years of change. They had been happily married for 58 years until the King Constantine II died on 10th January 2023. She remains the last Queen of Greece.

The Romanovs AU: Peter III(1728 - 1791) and Catherine II(1729 - 1792).
In 1745, the Prussian princess Sophia Augusta Frederica of Anhalt-Zerbst became the wife of the heir to the Russian throne, Peter, and converted to Orthodoxy. After adopting the Provo-Slavism, she ceased to be a Prussian princess and became the Russian Tsarevna Catherine Elekseevna. Peter did not love his wife, but after the birth of their eldest daughter he looked at her differently, and the birth of a son finally brought the couple closer together. In 1762 the Russian Empress Elisabeth died and Peter became Emperor. He reigned in the Russian Empire together with his wife. Almost 30 years they ruled in Russia, but in 1791 Peter died suddenly. For Catherine the death of her husband was a strong blow, she began to lead a reclusive life and did not want to see anyone except her eldest son, as he was similar to her late husband. A year later, Catherine herself died of a heart attack.
Children of Peter III and Catherine:
Elisabeth(1748 - 1815). First-born son of Peter III and Catherine II Alexeevna. Was named in honor of the Russian empress Elisabeth Petrovna. Elisabeth's parents did not like each other, but her birth brought them closer together. In 1764 she married Leopold II and became Empress of the Holy Roman Empire. The married life of Elizabeth and Leopold was a happy one. The marriage produced 12 children: Franz II, Alexander, Clementine, Karl, Mary, Louise, Ferdinand, Ludwig, Leopold, Caroline, Anna and Joseph.
Mary(1750 - 1825). Duchess of Hesse. In 1770 married Ludwig I of Hesse. She was loved not only by her husband and his relatives, but also by her subjects. Mother of 8 children: Ludwig II, Louise, George, Friedrich, Emil, Gustav, Charles, Henrietta.
Paul(1754 - 1822). Emperor of All Russia. The long-awaited heir to the Russian throne. After ascending the throne, Paul continued the work of his grandfather Peter I the Great. Under his rule the Russian Empire reached the peak of its power. Reforms beneficial to the state were adopted, and new and favorable treaties with other countries were concluded. Husband:
1)Augusta Hesse of Darmstadt(died in childbirth).
2)Sophia of Württemberg.
Father of 11 children: stillborn son, Alexander I, Constantine, Alexandra, Elena, Mary, Catherine, Olga, Anna, Nicholas I, Michael.
Anne(1757 - 1823). Queen of France, wife of Louis XVI and mother of 4 children: Louis, Mary, Charles, Sophia. She received her name in honor of her paternal grandmother. Was the favorite sister of Russian Emperor Paul. In 1789 the Great French Revolution began, and in 1791 Anne and her children fled to Russia. Two years later she learned of her husband's execution. Anne and her children never returned to France.
Alexey(1762 - 1812). The last child of Peter III and Catherine II Elekseevna. General Fieldzeichmeister. He was married to Louis XVI's sister Elizabeth. Father of 3 children: Mary, Catherine, Anton.
Романовы AU: Пётр III(1728 - 1791 ) и Екатерина II(1729 - 1792).

William Frederick Charles, King of Wurtemburg, who died on June 25, was at the time of his death the oldest reigning sovereign in Europe. He was the elder son of Frederick I, King of Wurtemburg, by his first consort (while Prince Royal) Augusta Caroline Frederica Louisa, daughter of Charles William Frederick, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel. King William's mother had been a favourite of Catherine II of Russia, who eventually banished her to Siberia, passing her off as dead; and, on her actual death, Frederick I, still Prince Royal, came to England and married Charlotte Augusta Matilda, Princess Royal of England, eldest daughter of George III, which Princess died his widow and Queen Dowager of Wurtemburg, on Oct. 6, 1828. King William was born at Lubin, in Silesia, on Sept. 27, 1781, and led a wandering life in his youth, owing partly to the political agitation of the period, and partly to the harsh and uncongenial temper of the King, then the Elector, his father. He passed much time in Silesia, in Russia, in Switzerland, and in the Rhenish provinces. On the invasion of Wurtemburg by French armies, in 1796 and 1799, he was an involuntary exile; and from 1803 to 1806 he remained away, in consequence of hi disapproval of his father's despotic conduct, and took up his residence in Paris, where he completed his education. When his father, at the will of Napoleon, became King of Wurtemburg, the Prince continued to live a very retired life, being strongly adverse to this pliancy to the Imperial ruler of France, who, nevertheless, influenced the Prince's first marriage, in 1808, with the Princess Augusta of Bavaria; but the union was dissolved by mutual consent in 1814. The Prince had entered the army early, and in 1812 he commanded the Wurtemburg contingent of la grande armée. Subsequently, he had the command of the sevneth corps, of the allied army, and distinguished himself at Rothière and Mountmirail. He, while King, was propriétaire of the 6th Regiment of Austrian Hussars, and chief of the 25th Regiment of Russian Infantry. The Prince succeeded his father, as King of Wurtemburg, Oct 30, 1816, and after the despotic regime of Frederick I, was cordially welcomed to the throne. Nor did he disappoint the hopes and expectations of his subjects. He proved himself a worthy and efficient monarch. Upon his accession he set himself vigorously to reduce the expenditure, especially curtailing the expenses of the army. In other matters he also made valuable reforms, and throughout his reign was ever ready to carry out such reasonable and necessary changes as were required of him, when the innovation was not forced on him by revolt, nor savoured of revolution. His Majesty, in the course of time, became one of the most venerated monarchs in Europe, being looked on as a liberal honest prince, who loyally kept his word to this subjects, and a kind , unassuming man, whose happiness was the well-being of his people. On one of the public buildings of Stutgard may be seen an inscription in his honour, “Happy the land where love is the subject, and love is the lord.” In this honourable and prosperous way, King William reigned over Wurtemburg for nearly fifty years. His Majesty, who was a Knight of the Garter, married, secondly, Jan. 24, 1816, Catherine Paulowna, daughter of Paul, Emperor of Russia, widow of Prince Peter of Holstein-Oldenburg and by her (who died Jan. 9, 1819), he had two daughters – Princess Maria Frederica Charlotte, married to Alfred, Count de Niepperg; and Sophia Frederica Matilda, consort of the present King of Holland. King William married thirdly, April 15, 1820, his cousin, Pauline Theresa Louisa, daughter of Louis Frederic Alexander, Duke of Wurtemburg, and by her has had a son, his successor, and two daughters – viz. Princess Catherine Frederica Charlotte, married to Frederic, Prince of Wurtemburg, her cousin; and Princess Augusta Wilhelmina Henrietta, married to Hermann Bernard George, Prince of Saxe-Weimar, Colonel Commandant of the 2nd Regiment of Wurtemburg Cavalry. The King of Wurtemburg is succeeded by his only son, Charles Frederic Alexander, now Charles I, King of Wurtemburg, who was born March 6, 1823.
The life of the late monarch  may be said to comprise the whole range of strictly modern history – of that history which the great French Revolution inaugurated. The deceased sovereign could remember Europe when it was still the Europe of the Middle Ages, when Germany was an Empire and Venice a Republic. At his birth the state over which he lived to reign was an inconsiderable Duchy, containing a population not much larger than that of Liverpool. He left it a Kingdom of nearly 2,000,000 inhabitants, and with territories doubled in extent and importance.
Chronicle, 1865

Princess Elizabeth to the Prince of Wales
Weymouth, 29 Aug. 1795
Had I followed my own inclination, my dearest brother should have been answer’d immediately, but we waited with impatience for your answer to mama, so I ask you many pardons & make many excuses for my abominable rudeness & ingratitude which I trust you will never find me guilty of towards you.
I have not said a word to Lady Dashwood concerning your present plan about Lady Newhaven, as mama wishes to talk it over with you, but I must again assure you that your goodness through this whole affair with regard of your confidence in me & your uncommon kindness towards my friend are thoroughly engraved on my heart & can never be forgotten but by death, though I flatter myself that it will not be forgotten then, as we are told that all good deeds are recorded in Heaven, then this surely will. Lady Dashwood can never express half what she feels concerning your goodness, & therefore I hope you will pardon her not having as yet wrote to you.
Mama commands me to tell you that she went out on purpose early this morning in hopes of coming home time enough to have written to you herself & to have told you how delighted she is as well as all of us at the thought of your unexpected visit to us which has quite raised our spirits, though I must say that everything has been beau tems in every sense since we have been here, & we are going on as comfortably as possible. Mr. Steward [sic] will be delighted, honoured, & I don’t know what else, at having you at his house where he has a room which will be ready for you from the 2d. of next month; we do not expect the Duke & Duchess* till between the 12th & 15th.
The Pitts are here, to our great joy, & were broken hearted at not being at Portsmouth when you was there. Your ears ought often to burn as you are our chief topick in conversation. We go this evening for the first time to the South Gloucester Camp, so fear I shall not be able to add more as we are to dine punctually at four to be there by six. General Gwynn’s Regiment marches in to morrow at eight o’clock in the morning; the King is to see them & afterwards we are to spend our day on Portland Island. I fear it will never equal the day that we spent there with you but hope to spend still pleasanter days when you come amongst us again. Mama desires me to say every kind & affectionate thing that can be said to you as well as my sisters who are all, thank God, well, & I am certain that you will rejoice to hear that Sophia began bathing yesterday of her own accord & has not suffered at all from it. We all beg to be remembered to the Princess.
* Of York.

If I Were A Blackbird (co-written with @darkmagyk)
Did princesses ever have one night stands?
Modern fairy tales might sound nice: princesses, handsome men, tiaras, glamorous parties and beautiful locations all over the world. But Her Royal Highness Princess Annabeth Frederica Sophia Ingrid of Sweden and Olympic Sailor (and part time influencer) Percy Jackson are about to find out the consequences of love at first sight. Can love conquer all when family drama, twitter, and too many secrets get in the way?

Crown Prince Wilhelm of Prussia with his little and only sister Princess Victoria Louise of Prussia. Early 1910s. This is a lovely photo of them together.
Victoria Louise was the mother of Queen Frederica of Greece. Another fun fact: Wilhelm and Victoria Louise were the nephew and niece of King Constantine I of Greece and Queen Sophia of Greece.
I must also say that I’m not a huge fan of the skulls on their hats (and the man on the photo here).
