Princess Alice VA CI (Alice Maud Mary; 25 April 1843 – 14 December 1878) was Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine from 13 June 1877 until her death in 1878 as the wife of Grand Duke Louis IV.

She was the third child and second daughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.

Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld (Marie Louise Victoire; 17 August 1786 – 16 March 1861), later Princess of Leiningen and subsequently Duchess of Kent and Strathearn, was a German princess and the mother of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom.

First of all, I would like to thank you all for this amazing year! It's been a pleasure meeting you all and I'm beyond thankful for your support.

Spread among 13 occupied and historic royal residences in the United Kingdom, the collection is owned by King Charles III and overseen by the Royal Collection Trust. The British monarch owns some of the collection in right of the Crown and some as a private individual. It is made up of over one million objects, including 7,000 paintings, over 150,000 works on paper, this including 30,000 watercolours and drawings, and about 450,000 photographs, as well as around 700,000 works of art, including tapestries, furniture, ceramics, textiles, carriages, weapons, armour, jewellery, clocks, musical instruments, tableware, plants, manuscripts, books, and sculptures.

Some of the buildings which house the collection, such as Hampton Court Palace, are open to the public and not lived in by the Royal Family, whilst others, such as Windsor Castle, Kensington Palace and the most remarkable of them, Buckingham Palace are both residences and open to the public.

About 3,000 objects are on loan to museums throughout the world, and many others are lent on a temporary basis to exhibitions.

I thought Queen Victoria's older half-sister Feodora possibly marrying King George IV was just made-up for the TV show "Victoria" but that's not totally true? Within the episode it's a major source of resentment by Feodora (Kate Fleetwood) towards her family and in particular her little half-sister (Jenna Coleman) which seems like dramatic license, but the actual mini-courtship seems to based on some reality and it went far enough with The Princess Sophia being a promoter of it?

I don’t have much interest in watching the show and can’t speak to it as an adaptation of real-world events, but Victoria made a passing reference to this potential engagement in her 1872 memoir. Reminiscing about visiting George IV in 1826, as a little girl of seven, she remarked that “[t]he King paid great attention to my Sister, and some people fancied he might marry her”. Personally, I doubt whether George IV would have really been interested in marrying again (given the utter disaster of his first marriage), much less to a 19-year-old some 45 years his junior, especially when he was in pretty poor health, in the last years of his life, and already had a long-term mistress. (Nor did George IV need to guarantee the succession, given that he had a ready heir presumptive in his brother William, as well as four nieces and nephews by 1826, Victoria included.)

Nevertheless, the mere threat of Feodora marrying someone rich and powerful, even if not the King, seems to have motivated the Duchess of Kent and Sir John Conroy to wed Feodora to someone distant and powerless. Indeed, Conroy bluntly reminded the Duchess that “[i]t is necessary for your and the Pss. Victoria’s interest that it [i.e Feodora’s marriage] should take place”, because “the interest you ought to have over [Victoria] will be endangered if she sees an older sister not so alive to it as she should be” (adding ominously that “once your authority is lost over the Princess V. you will never regain it”). The solution, for the Duchess and Conroy, was Prince Ernest of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, ruler of a tiny German toy kingdom with very little money (certainly by princely standards).

Hi! Are you able to identify the tiara the woman on the right is wearing? I think the one on the left is Augusta of Hasse-Kassel, wearing the original Cambridge Lover's Knot. This showed up on my Instagram feed and I find the shape of the unidentified tiara interesting. It reminds me of Queen Rania's Arabic tiara. Thanks in advance. (I hope tumblr doesn't eat the image)

It's a close up of a painting made by George Hayter in 1842 of the christening of the then Prince of Wales later King Edward VII. The Royal Collection does not label the subjects of the painting but Princess Augusta, Duchess of Cambridge's husband, Prince Adolphus, was one of Edward's godparents so it makes sense that she's in the painting and you're right it's probably her wearing the original Cambridge Lovers Knot Tiara.

Possibilities for the woman on the right based on the other godparents or their wives

I can't find pictures of any of them wearing a similar tiara and to be honest I'm more likely to recognize a person based on what tiara they are wearing than what they look like.

Another possibility is Queen Victoria's mother, Princess Victoria, Duchess of Kent, (left) but I've never seen a picture of her wearing a tiara similar to the one in the painting. It most reminds me of a diamond floral tiara owned by Queen Amalia of Greece (right) who was alive at the time but I don't know why she would be at the christening.

His Excellency Mr Koray Ertas was received in audience by The King and presented the Letters of Recall of his predecessor and his own Letters of Credence as Ambassador from the Republic of Turkey to the Court of St James’s. Mrs Ertas was also received by His Majesty. Sir Philip Barton (Permanent Under-Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs) was present. The King this afternoon officially opened the new London Headquarters of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development at Five Bank Street, London E14, and was received by Colonel Jane Davis (Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Greater London), the President of the Bank (Mrs Odile Renaud-Basso) and Mr Peter Curwen (the Board Director representing the United Kingdom). His Majesty toured the Bank, escorted by the President, and met Ukrainian and Turkish staff before viewing an art exhibition of paintings from Ukraine and joining a Meeting with the Board of Directors on green transition. Mrs Derek Cross was later received by The King upon relinquishing her appointment as The late Queen’s Diary Secretary. The King was represented by The Duke of Kent at the Service of Thanksgiving for Field Marshal the Lord Inge KG (formerly Chief of the Defence Staff) which was held at St Margaret’s Church, Westminster Abbey, today. The Queen Consort was represented by General Sir Patrick Sanders.

The Prince of Wales today undertook the following engagements in Poland. His Royal Highness this morning laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Plac Marszalka Józefa Pilsudskiego, Warsaw. The Prince of Wales afterwards called upon The President of the Republic of Poland at the President’s Chancellery, Warsaw. His Royal Highness this afternoon met Ukrainian refugees who are settled in the Polish community at Hala Koszyki, Koszykowa 63, Warsaw. The Prince of Wales subsequently met Ukrainian staff at Hala Koszyki who have been displaced from the British Embassy in Kyiv. His Royal Highness later arrived at Royal Air Force Northolt from Poland. Mr Jean-Christophe Gray, Mr Lee Thompson and Commander Robert Dixon RN were in attendance.

Her Royal Highness, President, Scotch Chef’s Club, today visited the Monitor Farm Scotland Programme at J. R. B. Wilson and Sons, Cowbog Farm, Morebattle, Kelso, Roxburghshire, and was received by Mr John Jeffery (Deputy Lieutenant of Roxburgh, Ettrick and Lauderdale).

Duke and Duchess of Sussex ‘demoted’ on Royal family website

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been “demoted” on the Royal family’s website to bottom billing alongside the Duke of York.

Until recently, the couple featured midway down the rankings, below senior members of the family but ahead of minor royals such as the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, the Duke of Kent, Princess Alexandra and Prince and Princess Michael of Kent.

When the webpage was updated to reflect the order of succession following Queen Elizabeth’s death, the Sussexes and Prince Andrew were repositioned at the bottom of the page.

The rearrangement might reflect the King’s vision of a slimmed-down monarchy, elevating the status of those who support the monarch in his duties.

The late Queen’s cousins, Princess Alexandra, 85, the Duke of Kent, 86, and the Duke of Gloucester, 78, are still officially classified as working members of the family.

Prince Michael of Kent, 80, and his wife, Marie-Christine, are not working royals and have been removed from the page entirely.

The 200-plus public engagements undertaken by the Kents for the not-for-profit sector are funded by the Prince’s own household, rather than the taxpayer.

It comes around 15 months after the Sussexes were first nudged down the rankings on the royal website, shifting from a position directly below the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, as they were then, to below the Wessexes and Princess Anne.

The new changes are likely to be received in California with a weary sigh.

The Sussexes are thought to have returned home on the day after the Queen’s funeral feeling more ostracised than ever, their new status in the general hierarchy having been made abundantly clear.

Barely on speaking terms with several of their closest relatives, the lack of communication between Buckingham Palace and their own office could be blamed for various dramas from a mistaken invitation to a state reception to confusion over military uniforms, not to mention differing versions of exactly when Prince Harry learnt of his grandmother’s death.

Compounding tensions, Harry and Meghan are still waiting to find out whether or not their children, Archie, three and Lilibet, one, will be allowed to use their new titles of prince and princess.

As grandchildren of the sovereign, they automatically became a prince and princess upon the Queen’s death and are entitled to be styled His Royal Highness and Her Royal Highness.

Yet although the new titles of the Prince and Princess of Wales have been updated on the royal website, Archie and Lilibet’s have not, despite other changes being made.

Sources have suggested that the only sign that the Sussex children will not be allowed to use their titles is the fact that it has not been publicly acknowledged on the website.

Asked about the discrepancy in the aftermath of the Queen’s death, a spokesman for the King said: “Updating live on a website doesn’t quite work.”

He added: “We will be working through updating the website as and when we get information.”

Meanwhile, it has emerged that the Duchess’s podcast, Archetypes, will return to Spotify next Tuesday following a four-week break due to the death of the Queen.

The episode will feature comedian Margaret Cho in conversation about Asian American tropes in the entertainment industry.
