Movement Project 27/01/25 - Graphic Design

Todays' work involved typography: namely, using lettering to convey a words meaning. Above are some examples from my sketchbook. My favourite is perhaps the "DANGER!" precisely because it does the exact opposite of the task.

After this preliminary sketching, we were introduced to the printblocks. They came in a few differnt sizes, some tall, aome small, wide, and thin. This offered a new element to the challenge, as the fonts and their shape were decided for you: all you could choose was how they were arrnged. Here are my efforts:

Here, I was playing around with the letters, suing them to communicate images, not so much words. I played into the fact that the ink becomes progressively more faded the more times you use th stamp, creating a sense of motion in the hammer ("T").

"CHAIN" is the most complete design, and easily my favourite. My favourite aspect of it perhaps the use of colour. You associate the "C" with the "O"s in order to create the image of the chain, but crucially, it doesn't become lost in them, due to the "C" being in blue rather than red.

Next, we worked in cut outs of typefaces. For "SPEED", I selected a very wide font to accentuate the horizontal lines. It's as if the word is actually speeding past you (or perhaps I should say sppeeeeeedd-ing past)

Ooh-hue

I made these two print blocks........ in late December......phewww. I finally started doing stuff with them yesterday. I ironed the cover fabric and glued the spines.

I've already ironed the adhesive and the mulberry paper to my cloth, so let's get that cut out and get those book boards glued down.

Fun fact: This cover for this 4.25×5.5 inch sketchbook is twenty inches long.

I'm going to leave these last bits of glue to dry overnight. I don't wanna wait overnight to finish it!!!!

And tomorrow for end papers and affixing my print blocks. And maybe making some more print blocks.
