like some people just don’t understand the fundamental differences that Jonathan lives with that can make him appear less sympathetic than Steve or Nancy because he is truly and deeply different. like he was raised by an abusive father and after the divorce he was heavily parentified. Joyce tried her best but it’s clear that Jonathan regularly watched Will, picked up shifts to pay the bills, worked while attending school, took over parenting aspects such as pep talks and emotional support, regularly made breakfast or dinner, and didn’t seem overly surprised that he was the one responsible for planning the funeral while Joyce was convinced (rightfully) that Will was alive. and that’s just season 1!! no wonder he didn’t have time to make friends or be happy, he spent his whole life with responsibilities thrust onto him to keep his family afloat, and he does it with little complaint until he reaches a breaking point.
Jonathan is poor. He doesn’t have the financial support or options that Nancy or Steve have. He cannot afford to go to a different college with Nancy and he is scared to leave Will and Joyce and now El because he has been living life as a parental figure for years. Being poor when people you love aren’t is embarrassing and it can be very alienating especially because of the shame that goes with it. His self medicating with weed and avoiding his problems in my opinion is symptomatic of depression because he feels trapped but he can’t afford to get out and he’s afraid of abandoning Will and Joyce just like Lonnie did.
It’s clear that the moment things got bad, Jonathan took back on the role of big brother, father, practical and protective. He immediately realized what his absence had done to Will, which likely reaffirms his fear of leaving Will for any form of college and not being there. He took care of Will and El and was able to make it back to Hawkins. But no matter where his plot goes, being raised with an abusive absent father, being parentified at a young age, and being poor will always influence his decision making - which adds layers to his sometimes confusing and offputting behavior.
I really hope that while Nancy is allowed to express rightful feelings of abandonment, the show doesn’t gloss over the affects that being poor has had on his life and choices. Jonathan deserves to have that acknowledged.

the S.T fandom when Jonathan gives up all possibility on his decade+ long dream collage to go with Nancy, but doesn’t want to because 1) it’s her dream, not his, 2) he wants to be with his family, and 3) he’s not well-off on money like Nancy is, but is afraid of telling her because he fears that in turn, she’ll come to him, give up on her dreams, and end up in a loveless relationship; and he doesn’t want that for her, which is why he’s ignoring her and lying to her- because he wants to delay that experience and interaction as long as he possibly can:

Came across yet ANOTHER post about the bra picture again in the Jonathan tag: Basically it said 'I don't understand how Nancy could kiss Jonathan on the cheek/forgive him for the bra picture':
Because unlike the fans, Nancy understood that the picture of her in her bra was taken on accident as there was only one pic taken and he immediatley turned away and he wasn't actually being a pervert like Steve and so many of the fans make it out to be. He did one thing wrong unintentionally in his entire life-and Nancy understood that. In fact my appreciation for Nancy Wheeler grows everytime I see a post like this because she can forgive a mistake unlike the fans and see all the good in Jonathan that other people ignore and knows that the goods in him far outweigh all the bad/that one time he accidentally did something wrong.
I'm sick of finding Jonathan dislike/hate stuff in the Jonathan tag. We really need to create another tag to sort the anti-Jonathan people from the pro-Jonathan people.
I'm sick of having the same repeated conversation every single day. Having to defned him on this same subject every single day. The people that keep saying this stuff-You do understand it, you just don't want to understand it.
Jonathan wasn't being a pervert. He took that one picture on accident. He didn't know she was going to take her shirt off. He didn't not stalk her or follow her there and act like a creepy weirdo. He accidentally came upon her and the party that was going on. Nancy knows Jonathan and knows that he is a good guy who has spent his life devoted to taking care of everyone else and putting others wants and needs ahead of his own and all hes done his entire life was just play mommy and daddy to his baby brother and all he cares about is taking care of Will.
So while you are all like 'eww I'd definitely have kept my distance from that guy'. I'm the opposite. I can understand how Jonathan only has ever done one thing wrong in his life and that it was done on accident btw.
I'd love to date an adorable little gumdrop that devotes his life to taking care of his baby brother and sister, that doesn't conform to societys rules and believes in being true to yourself always chooses love over power, that is selfless and kind, and all the trauma and pain he experienced doesn't make him cold towards people its the opposite, all that pain just made him kinder…. ext ext
Just thank god for people like Nancy Wheeler. Thank you Nancy for not being like the fans of this show and holding the one thing Jonathan did wrong on his life on accident against him and seeing all the good in him.

Jonathan and the pictures
I love Jonathan Byers but my one issue with him is of course the pictures. This is a really bad thing and while I can understand why Nancy chose to forgive him I also understand why fans haven't especially in thinking that it makes it unrealistic for the two of them to date. I also think it was warranted for Steve to break Jonathan's camera. I think Jonathan gets some help here since we the audience he didn't go out into the woods with the intention to stalk them and I do think he initially stayed there because he was fascinated by them hanging out and not having a care in the world compared to what he's doing.
Second as to why Nancy forgives him. I think this occurs for the following reasons in story, first Nancy did seem to think Steve went to far in breaking the camera. Second Nancy did seem to take pity on Jonathan for what happened to Will. Neither of these excuse what he did just what the show seems to portray. She also goes to him when she sees the Demogorgon in his picture and thought he could help and through that they realize the Demogorgon connection. Through this they realize that they have a common interest and don't have much else in the way of people helping them. Through this they work together and Nancy sees more of Jonathan he apologizes to her but even as a Jonathan fan it could have been a better apology but not a bad apology either. She sees more of how caring and protective he is of the people he loves and how nice he is the night after he helped save her and afterwards when she was so scared and recognized the real nice guy. Further he also helped her in fighting the Demogorgon afterwards. Also Nancy doesn't get together with him until a year later and in that time they probably spent more time together and bonded more.
But even then I still hate him taking the pictures especially of course the one right before the one he took of Barb since from a story perspective Jonathan was only there for Nancy to find the picture and see the Demogorgon in it. I have heard a great counterproposal to this, Jonathan doesn't take any pictures of Nancy up in the room and focuses on Barb after they leave. Why does he do this? Because he finds her sitting there all by her lonesome to be interesting and wonders why she is staying there and what he said about taking a picture reveals about a person really reflects. But a majority of Jonathan's pictures there before that still focus on Nancy and Steve notices that when Nicole shows him. Steve is still understandably still angry and everything unfolds after that the same.

Stranger Things Post (PLEASE READ):
I feel like this has to be said, but I am pro-Mileven, pro-Lumax, pro Mike Wheeler, pro Jane El Hopper, pro Lucas, pro Max and pro Dustin and pro main party. I am also pro-Eddie Munson and pro-Jonathan Byers, my boy did not win the awards for being best brother and son in the world for you to be dumping on him and his flaws, as much as we all judge him sometimes.
I also have no qualms about Jancy becoming canon, and I am in full support of cishet gender nonconforming demisexual Jane Eleven ‘El’ Hopper agenda, as well as asexual aromantic (nebularomantic) Dustin agenda (who is also transmasc AMAB nonbinary, he has the vibe), and asexual Eddie Munson (he has the vibe). I also do support autistic El, as well as Dustin with autism and ADHD, any other neurodivergent HC’s for other Stranger Things characters are things you can feel free to give me- I’ll eat that shit up like halloween candy tbh.
I am anti-Karen Wheeler, anti-Billy Hargrove, anti-Angela and anti-all her shitty friends(FUCK her honestly), anti-Henry Creel/Vecna, anti-Neil Hargrove, anti-Jason Carver, anti-Byler, anti-Stancy, anti-Steddie, anti-Harringrove, and anti-Martin Fucking Brenner, and the list shall continue to go on as more shitty characters make themselves known to my radar. If you all hate that, the block button is right there. DNI, and kindly silence yourself, aphobe/transphobe/ableist.
ESPECIALLY if you hate Dustin or El or Mike. Do not FUCKING talk to me or my children EVER.

Imagine Jonathan takes an absolutely amazing photo of Argyle skating a rail. Argyle praises Jonathan relentlessly and starts showing the photo to everyone he can.
You would think that it’s to show off his skating captured in the photo but because it’s Argyle he is hyping Jonathan up to everyone that he comes across.
He hypes him up so much that the next time he comes with Argyle to one of his spots other skaters approach Jonathan to talk about his photography. And if he ever thought about submitting some photos to local skate mags.
And Argyle is just beaming because Jonathan is learning how to finally take compliments that are well deserved.

I saw a twitter thread that was giving reasons for Nancy Wheeler being a lesbian and I gotta say, I agree. At least that Nancy is NOT straight. The way she interacts with Barb….dude, do you know how many of the stairs conversations (from season one before Barb disappears) I’ve had with friends who were secretly seeing me??? The whole “this isn’t you” after Nancy lies about where she’s going and the way she reacts with her facial expressions…..bro, they’ve kissed before. This has been said a million times here and otherwise since season one.
But with the level of grief and guilt she goes through in season two, I’m seeing that right now in myself as someone who just had one of their best friends pass away suddenly who was also an ex. The whole “bullshit” Stancy Halloween fight could be chalked up to grief and liking Jonathan sure, but I think it’s way more than that. I think she’s calling everything bullshit including herself because she lost the one person who saw her, someone she loved more than just platonically.
Then season three is mostly just her fighting with Jonathan if you really think about it, because she wants to be more than just a sandwich girl at Hawkins Post. Someone Barb would be proud of. We only see her really happy with Jonathan in season three when they wake up late and she sneaks out and the soft moment they have at the end when he’s leaving. Other than that they’re either fighting with each other or fighting monsters. Robin calls her a “priss,” but before Steve she was just kind of a…nerd. Like Robin. Maybe they ran in the same circles? We know they don’t know each other in person, at least Nancy doesn’t know HER.
FOLLOW ME HERE: What if Robin knew Barb?? What if Barb confided in her that she had feelings for Nancy, but that Nancy was dating Steve and we know how hard Robin goes for her friends so she just made this assumption that Nancy is a priss????
Then season four of course, we see Nancy not going to California. She’s frustrated that Jonathan wouldn’t be coming and she stayed for the basketball game for her front page news right?? Why didn’t she take another flight hmmm??? And we think she’s jealous of Robin, but what if she was jealous of Steve??? Because we don’t really have indication that Steve and Nancy have spent much time around each other since summer ‘85…but Robin and Nancy go to school together. Robin is in band which means they’re in the same room *hypothetically* for the important games that Nancy needs to document. We don’t know how many games Steve went to besides the one, he could’ve been working on some of those games or on dates. So ipso facto, Robin and Nancy have (probably) been in the same room more than Steve and Nancy….why would she suddenly be jealous of ROBIN???
And you can see her genuinely enjoying being around Robin after her monologue at the psych ward when she was being “annoyed” and “on edge” with her before that. I don’t see that as “oh well she started considering her a friend” I think she had a crush, she was on edge because she had lost Barb and didn’t want to feel that way about another girl. But the monologue relaxes her because she realized Robin is just as unhinged as she is, but in a different way. Because Nancy Wheeler is IMPULSIVE. She’s smarter than hell, but she is so careless with her own safety.
Also every time the Bylers shippers contrast the Wheeler siblings really they’re just giving us Nancy Wheeler is gay proof too. Because look at their similar behaviors. They fight and bicker in a way that says “i know what you are, NO I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE”
NOT VERY STRAIGHT IF YOU ASK ME.
Also, while I now understand my attraction to men is because I was a queer trans dude the entire time, I used to think it was comphet. But everything I feel about men is different than the way Nancy feels about men. It feels forced, it feels like she thinks she HAS to have a boyfriend and HAS to force a real connection with them. COMP. MOTHERFUCKIN. HET.
In conclusion, for the love of god, let Nancy Wheeler kiss girls. Natalia wants it, the fans want it. Give us a SMOOCH.

Aro4Aro Stancy Break-Up AU Part 1
Or: Steve Harrington and Nancy Wheeler are both aromantic. Neither realize this. Poor Jonathan Byers ends up in the middle.
It hits him like a slap. The sounds of the party outside the bathroom door distort, muffle, cease. He can’t hear anything past Nancy’s words.
“Like we’re in love?” he asks. He cups her face, like you’re supposed to cup your girlfriend’s face. It’s soft. Nice. His gut curdles.
“It’s bullshit.” She spits it at him, eyes unfocused, mouth snarling.
He wants to ask her, “how did you know?” Wants to shake her and demand what gave away the game, where he went wrong. He doesn’t. “You don’t love me?” Steve asks.
“It’s bullshit.” She doesn’t sound angry anymore. She sounds like she’s going to cry. That’s what keeps his feet planted.
“Okay,” he says, backing up a few steps and dropping his hand from her cheek. “Let’s get you home, Nance.”
It’s hard. Nancy’s all elbows and flailing limbs. Even when she’s plastered, Nancy knows what she wants and right now, that’s away from Steve.
“Get off me.” The looks he gets from the partygoers at the bottom of the stairs tells him exactly how this spectacle is going to go over at school tomorrow. Didn’t you hear? Steve Harrington’s just a chip off the old block. Can’t seem to take no for an answer.
“Harrington?” Jonathan Byers’ disgusted face tells him that it’s going over just the same for him. He stands at the bottom of the stairs, a red cup in hand. A bit of the lurid red spiked punch sloshes onto the floor as he passes it to one of the kids he’s standing next to. He takes a single step forward, pushing up the sleeves of his jacket like they’re in some action flick. “What the hell are you–”
“Jonathan,” Nancy says, slurring. Her mouth is stained that same lurid red. Her sweater, too. “It’s bullshit.”
She’s crying when she says it. The gossips surrounding the spectacle are already whispering to each other, giggling behind hands and faux concern, too quiet for Steve to hear over the music. Something swells in Steve, a latent desire to bodily shield Nancy Wheeler from anything coming her way. Even if it’s just high schoolers. Even if he’s bullshit.
He sighs. “Help me get her home, man.”
Jonathan’s arms drop, his sleeves rolling down as gravity does it’s job. Steve refuses to meet his gaze, eyes trained on his sneakers, watching them shuffle back and forth on his toes with indecision, until they finally make their way toward where Steve and Nancy are stalled out at the bottom of the stairs. Jonathan must put his arm around her because her weight on Steve’s back lessens.
They limp their way through costumed teenagers, shoving through when the bodies seem unwilling to move. The chilled October night air hits like relief. Steve gulps it down.
“Where’s your car?” Jonathan asks, quiet.
Steve finally looks over Nancy’s head at the other boy. He doesn’t look mad anymore. His brows furrowed in a expression Steve isn’t familiar enough to read. “Did you drive?” Steve asks. “Did you drink?”
“Mom has the car.” His shoulders droom, like that’s somehow a shameful admission.
“Did you drink?”
Jonathan shakes his head, “barely got my first sip.”
Nancy’s hiccuping between them, muttering quietly to herself. He hears some choice B words –  “Barb” and “bullshit” and “boyfriends”  – before tuning her out.
He fishes his keyes out of his back pocket, tossing them left-handed to the other boy. “Can you drive?” he asks, relieved when Jonathan nods.
Steve leads the way to his car where it’s parked down the block. It takes concentrated effort to shuffle Nancy into the backseat. She lays down, face smushed into the leather seats. They don’t bother trying to wrangle her into a seatbelt, just close the door and slide into the front.
When Jonathan starts the car, Blondie belts out about her heart of glass – la, da, da, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, yeah, riding high on love's true bluish light – at a volume that really emphasizes the tonal shift the night’s taken. Jonathan turns the volume all the way down until all they can hear is Nancy crying in the backseat. The true soundtrack of the night.
The twelve minute drive to the Wheeler house drags on for hours. Jonathan's knuckles are white on the steering wheel, and Steve's head keeps boucing off the glass of his window with how he's pressing his heated cheek to it. Nancy stops crying by miute three, starts snoring by minute eight. No one says a word.
Steve and Jonathan don't communciate beyond hand gestures and mouthed commands as the lever a grumbling Nancy out of the car and sneak her into her house and into her bed without waking anyone up. She's going to be pissed in the morning. Her teeth are unbrushed, she's still in her stained sweater, and her shoes are still in, shoved under the quilt on her bed with the rest of her. Steve lingers at the threshold, staring down at her as she sleeps. She's so beautiful it makes his heart stutter nauseatingly.
This is what love feels like.
Jonathan is already settled into the driver's seat when Steve makes it back out to the car. He slides into the passenger seat, looking out the front of the windshield, palms sweating.
"What now?" Jonathan asks.
Steve looks at him from the corner of his eye, surprised to find the other boy already looking back. "Take me home?"
Jonathan turns the key in the ignition and drives.

so i looked up ‘jonathan byers analysis’ and i found the “Jonathan Byers and the Victimized ‘Geek’ Misogynist Complex” and wow. just skimming through. i am baffled about…everything. now i’m gonna rewatch seasons 1-2 to prove everything this person said wrong. soon. right now it’s just things off the top of my mind. i’ll do a full read and rewatch some time- anyway, how do i, a random ass highschooler, have a better understanding of everything TM about jonathan than someone who writes a shit ton of criticism and has a degree?
Tumblr media
YES HES THE VICTIM! Steve called him a slur, called his whole family a disgrace, compared him to his deadbeat father, and said it’s not a surprise what happened to his missing/dead younger brother. “they’re both victims” my ass. steve deserved what he got.
Tumblr media
steve bought the camera, nancy delivered it 💀 not defending the pictures obviously
Tumblr media
HIS DAD SHOVED HIM AGAINST THE WALL FIRST. “he hasn’t done anything to provoke jonathan.” right, so shoving your teenage son against a wall is normal, a-okay behavior? if your gonna write an entire article shit talking someone, get it right. my god.
Tumblr media
she could have very well ended up killing him- obviously not intentionally, but it was a supernatural possession, they had no idea how it was going to turn out. if your brother, who you’ve looked after your entire life, was possessed and looked like he was dying, would you just stand by? “oh, my brother is suffering and possessed, my moms trying to burn it out of him, but nothing is going smoothly, and he might die, but just let me hang back here ✌️”
but so anyway i’m petty and pissed so i’ll be rewatching the first two seasons (because the article didn’t have the 3/4 seasons) and responding to every point on that and why the author is not correct at all with Jonathan byers 👍

There are many 'little fandoms' in the big stranger things fandom but my favourite one is the 'Stan Billy Hargrove' one.
Everyone is so accepting, most of the Billy Stans kind of adopted Eddie and Steve too, we accept almost every ship like Eddissy or Argilly and (i speak for myself and how i experienced it) everyone ships at least Harringrove most of the time even Mungrove, Steddie and Harringroveson/Stedilly/Stilldie/Harmungrove and I love it. Nobody judges anyone, we're not toxic like some other fans and we love most of the characters.
It's my safe place.
