Counterfeit Goods Hurt All BJD Artists
I can't tell and demand what anyone else spreads their money on, but if there is anything I hate the most, it's blatant falsehoods being paraded around as fact. I won't name names since I'm not interested in brigading since spamming someone is never going to productively change someone's mind, but as a reminder: recasts (counterfeit ball jointed dolls) hurt all artists. To pretend that it's OK to participate in the theft and exploitations of BJD artists because "the companies [they work for] exploit the artists because they don't get royalties and are only given a one off payment" is wildly inaccurate for the majority (if not all) BJD companies. The BJD hobby is a global hobby and how one company may operate from another may vary wildly from company to company, country to country, as local laws may dictate artist's rights to their work in specific ways as well as specific employment contracts. By no means is this a end-all, be-all, but most BJD artists are the company. Sometimes the company is solely the BJD artist and whomever they may hire to help with doll production. Sometimes the artist, like Bimong, participates in casting and cleaning up the dolls. Other times they might not have those skills and may need to hire fellow employees or commission another BJD company to do the casting for them - many artists use Harucasting, Resinsoul, Island Doll, Fdoll, and so on for their casting services, for example.
Sometimes the artist also haves on apprentices - have you ever noticed that Supiadoll and Limhwa's works look similar to Bimong? They studied under him. I am unsure if Limhwa casts their own dolls, but I know Supiadoll (as of the last few years) uses Withdoll to cast their dolls (with at least one collaboration doll between the two of them, Xion). The BJD hobby is small and many companies have artists who will leave and start their own company, in time - Cerberus Project (Fairyland) used to work under Luts, Resinsoul and Bobobie are sister-companies, Xagadoll and Asleep Eidolon are sister-companies, Dollits (J Baek) used to work for Doll in Mind, went independent, and for a time Dollits worked with Darak-i under the brand "Macaron Doll" and shared a workspace... Would it even surprise you to hear that the most infamous recaster, who had probably done the most harm in this hobby, used to work as an employee under Xagadoll before he was found to be stealing from them and subsequently fired? The BJD world is small and through a cruel twist of irony, the only properly "large" BJD company probably IS that recaster specifically: Luo. (Quenifs, Shuga Fairy, and whatever other monikers he decides to use for himself)
Needless to say, the average BJD operation is probably 1-4 people. But if the artist isn't the owner of the company, sometimes they are able to take their sculpts with them - whether it's because they still retain ownership or they are able to buy the rights to their dolls, I cannot say with certainty without asking them myself, but when Cerberus Project left Luts to make Fairyland, they also took several of their sculpts with them, too - that's why Luts can't make a Delf Soony anymore, even though it was originally produced under the Luts name. J Baek was a sculptor for Doll in Mind, and when he left them to create Dollits, he took several of his sculpts with him, too - SooHee comes to mind, but she wasn't the only doll.
Some BJD companies are "bigger," Fairyland floats around 40 people all-in-all and Volks - of legitimate companies - ...may be the biggest company, when taking account the Dollfie and Doll Dream branches? I am not sure if we've ever gotten a quote of how many employees Volks employs in that section of their company.
Again, I cannot say what another person can and cannot do with their money. However, if you're pro-recast, you can defend recasts all you want, but you don't need to spout inaccuracies as fact. It's much more respectable to just say you want a cheaper doll, no matter the "actual cost" to the hobby as a whole.
Funding recasts just gives recast companies the funds to steal even more dolls, including from those little single-artist teams like Lillycat, even though sometimes those recasts might not even be particularly profitable for the recasters. (Even Hujoo Freya was stolen, and she a $40 plastic bjd that was widely available at the time!)
It's OK if you think a doll is overpriced and "not worth" the value the company/artist has set for their work, but that doesn't mean artists deserve to have their work stolen. These are small companies, not massive cooperation that can easily weather theft, counterfeit products hurt all legitimate artists. It's just a matter of when. No one needs a doll but BJDs have become more and more accessible as the years have gone by, and will probably continue down this path as STL sharing and printers become better and better. Sometimes we cannot help but support things that perpetrate harm due to needs demanded in our society, but no one needs a doll, and I certainly wouldn't want to hurt someone (or multiple people) because I wanted a doll and damn the consequences to anyone else about me getting the "best deal" I could get (aka: paying the least amount of money possible). To wrap this discussion up... please remember, if you purchased recasts in the past, it's never to late to stop and start purchasing legit dolls, secondhand or directly. How someone "shifts" their collection from recast or legit is an entirely personal choice: personally, I think it's more than OK to keep your recasts and keep them out of the secondhand market and enjoy them as they are, as long as you don't pass them off as legits, and stop supporting the primary and secondhand recast market.
#bjd#ball jointed doll#legit bjd#recast bjd discussion#proartist bjd#relating to a discussion I had elsewhere#do what you want but you don't need to lie or spread what might as well be pro-recast propaganda or straw man argument#I'm also posting this because I think sometimes "BJD history” as it is gets forgotten about?#such as how one company might be connected to another one#be it shared talent or what have you

I repainted my Mano, after more than five years without even looking at him. The last time I took photos of him was back in 2019. I wanted to modify his lips once again, to widen the top one. I feel like I didn't do a half decent job when I made the lips bigger than life. I always wanted him to have massive lips. It started slowly, then I got them to be this size. I purchased new Aves Apoxie to mod them, last year. Then I got lazy, and waited until this year to finally go ahead and mod my Mano once again!
Except, I thought maybe I can just get away with repainting his face, without even attempting to modify them again! Lol! I am a lazy old fart, what can I say! I know I'll mod him eventually, I just wanted to see if I could get away without modding. I feel like I could, but I know I'll mod him, just because that's how much of a crazy old-fart I am. And I can see every little flaw, and it kind of drives me crazy. He is a 67cm tall doll, so he's pretty huge, I should be able to do better (mods).
In the meantime, I'll enjoy how he looks for now -- I am happy with him, but need to fix his applied lashes, I suck at those too. I lost one of his piercings in the process as well, he has thirteen stainless steel ball bearing glued to his face as facial piercings and I lost one! I know I have extra ones, I purchased a few when I first gave him ball bearings as piercings (prior I was using a reproposed ball keychain as the piercings-beads). Sadly, I haven't been able to find them since I repainted my Luna, and wanted to give her some as well. I'll keep looking nonetheless, but I might have to get some more and that's going to hurt me more than I wish -- I hate wastefulness! T__T;;
His brows are darker than they might appear in some photos, and his lips are lighter. I wished I knew how to take photos, but I suck! DX The last photo is a comparison of 2019, the last time I photographed him, and his current bod1less look. Lol! I painted him using acrylics only, and tried giving him some texture with a slight stylized shading on his cheeks. I didn't want to make him look like he's wearing make up, but still like a dark vampire prince! (:

The comparison between bjd collectors and designer purse collectors has always made alotta sense to me, especially in regards to fakes. But what I NEVER understood was the way anti artists use that comparison and rework it into their anti artist arguments.
We as bjd collectors will compare the two and say that collecting bjds, just like collecting designer bags, is a hobby that requires saving up funds, hunting for bargains, buying from the source, researching reputable resellers and dealers, modifying, refurbishing, and building up communities and relationships with other people involved in our luxury hobby
But anti artists will compare the two and almost only focus on the looks! They'll state that they would never want to own a minifee Chloe when they can have a finimee Zoey just like they would never want to own a Prada when they can have a Nada! And it's like, fine, if you don't want to buy the doll you want then werk mama. But at least try to be more sane about it like the Nada owner is!!
I've see girlies go on paragraph after paragraph rants about how happy they are with their "minifee" and how it's (allegedly) just as good as a Fairyland minifee and how they're doing better than us because their "minfee" didn't cost an arm and a leg. And it's honestly concerning in a sick way. Like watching someone struggle (and fail) to not throw up
You think the Nada purse owners are doing that!? NO!!!!! The Nada owners are being just as shady, sneaky, snake like, and silly as the anti artists girlies, but at least the fake purse owners haven't convinced themselves that they ACTUALLY own the designer bags they NEVER paid for. You talk to anyone in the rbjd and ask them to name what type of dolls they own and those clowns actually have the AUDACITY to name off companies and sculpts!
Makes me shake in my heels every time I see it!
Like no mama. You know that you didn't buy a minifee Chloe because minifee Chloe is ONLY produced by Fairyland and Chloe was ONLY sculpted by one of their employees getting their FL paycheck. Why don't you call it New Sexy Minifee SD Chloe Dollfie Fairyland 1/4 Cute Girl Bjd just like how you bought it huh?? Oh right! Cuz to you long term lala land residents an rbjd and a bjd is 200% the exact same thing in every regard except price
Honestly. Anti artists either really need to take a page outta the bootleg purse girl playbook OR they need an 80cc dose of reality

"I see a pretty feed, I hit follow! [No matter if they have recasts]"
OK, nice if that works for you, but for me, it immediately "taints" the beautiful feed. There's enough pro-artist photographers out there who I can follow.
#not gonna rb the confession blog#idk how people who claim to be proartist can just overlook it when someone they follow has 90% recasts#no level of photography can be this great for me to tolerate that

Saying someone is bad for a post/video/ story is messed up. You can't judge a person based on an opinion they said once. Also people can change? Improve, have new views...
I think is elitist to cancel someone for that.
If people can be judge for 1 action they do once all the past prorecasters that are now proartist would be fucked.

My Myou Bettina, wearing the first outfit I complete for him, based on Ken Kaneki, who he is supposed to be. He's a 28cm tall doll, and I am not skilled at sewing. So, I should have known making clothes for him, let alone based on anime characters, was going to be next level nightmare. I chose to recreate this one first, not because I keep forgetting to purchase size #4/#3 zippers white nylon zippers, but because I know the struggle is going to be real once I start making that outfit for him. I already made a few pieces of clothing for this doll, but finding patters that fit well is an ordeal. I also made a cloth/foam manikin, that didn't go too well. And also, an initial pattern for his awakened/battle outfit, but I am not sure it's going to go well either. I know I suck at sewing, and this doll is extremely stylized. His body is willowy and very close to skeletal-like (kind of like me, yay! Lol!). So, making anything from pre-existing fashion doll patterns needs a lot of alterations, and me making my own is an ordeal on its own.
Regardless, I am supper happy with him and how he looks with his smaller eyes! I am also liking very much how he looks as my Ken Kaneki! I knew I loved the doll, but now I love him so much more, that I know he can pull off the look, even if not anime/manga accurate (I feel maybe the manga version is more stylized, and has a larger head, but my personal preference is the anime with the smaller head, and not stubby proportions).
Unfortunately, and as I had feared. The mods I did on him are not permanent! I was fearing so, when I learned that people usually clean up mistakes when using the Vajello Plastic putty, using alcohol. I feared taht meant the product is not meant to have any kind of solvents applied to it. My fears were true. Alcohol will melt the putty right off! I was cleaning my 3D artist Leon head, and the mods came right off with the paint apps! DX Looks like I'll have to get some Aves Apoxie Sculpt Afterall! Oh, well! Live and learn, is what I keep on saying! I was actually excited about the plastic putty working for permanent mods, because I tend to not love my repaint work and rework/redo those repaints like there's no tomorrow! Now, I know! There's no substitute for Aves' Apoxie Sculpt! I kind of want to cry a little, even if it was kind of cool to find what I can and can't do, with the Vallejo filler stuff. T____T;;;
The super washed out looking photos were taken with my super old cell phone. I think I like the way that one works a bit more, but I don't like the hazy/blurriness of it all.

Yesterday we were alerted of this "proartists antirecast SmartDoll maniac" (idk how else to describe it) complaining about very basic information "leaked", info that could be gotten from elsewhere at any moment in more detail. 🤣
Of course now it's blocked, although it's certainly a troll account. Still we feel like we should share some videos clearly showing the process of recasting anything, for science and because it's funny seeing antis get angry in general.
youtube
youtube
Now, to be honest, the person in question was using an awfully unpractical method that doesn't work for actually casting copies, and was using the results to sew cloth without scratching the torso of a doll, so, I talked to the other admin and came to the conclusion of posting actual videos on tutorials for recasting anything.
The silicone mold doesn't care if it's a resin bjd part, a plastic piece, or a smart doll, so... have fun!
