This quote is one I have written down & I read especially when my depression is in full force. Struggles of Life
So I'm just looking at my feed (you know just checking Tumblr reals quickly) and then I see a cute pic and I go- "awww" and click on the hashtag. So then I see another picture and go, "ooh what's that?" And same, I click on the hashtag. So then I'm on a page, and I see my OTP kissing or something, so now, I have to go, "Oh em gee! I missed so much!" So now, I search up the show and I see someone getting shot. So now I have to watch the whole entire like 7 weeks worth of episodes I missed, tommorow, because a.) my OTP realized their feelings for each other, b.) a favorite character of mine was shot, and c.) who is that hot guy on the show? The joys of being a Tumbler. Oh well.

▶ Climate change is a wicked problem. . 🤔 Wicked problem is a socially complex problem that is difficult or impossible to solve because the problem itself can't be clearly structured and defined, and there are no right or wrong solutions. . ✍️ Yet, problems of lower scale can also be wicked. For example, every design problem is basically wicked, because they don’t have a definitive formulation, they lack a stopping rule that clearly indicates the problem has been solved, and their solutions are not right or wrong, only good or bad. . 🚀 Read more about how problems can be viewed as the core of entrepreneurial opportunities (link in bio). . #wickedproblems #globalwarming #climatechange #meltingice #iceberg #polarbear #problems #problemsolving #problemsandsolutions #problemsoflife #businessopportunities

Finding X
“Hell is empty and all the devils are here!” cries Ferdinand in Shakespeare’s play the Tempest as he jumps off his wrecking ship in the midst of a horrible storm. This quote has been relatable to me on various occasions, as I am certain to many others during hard times and suffering. It is a shakesperean exclamation, basically saying: “What’s going on? Why is this happening? Evil needs to stay put! I thought the Devil was banished!”. These questions and the entire problem of evil are dealt with in the article by Martin Cothran, How Literature Solves the Problem of Evil. While many of his points, such as that literature is more relatable and meaningful during hard times than a syllogism from the world’s renowned philosopher, are congenial with me, there are others that do not agree with me. Though I have definitely not passed through each hell that this world gives to us, I believe I have closed enough windows to know a few things about the problem of evil. Literature does not solve the problem of evil, but helps us understand it and look for the greater light.
Contrary to what Mr. Cothran concludes (or questions) at the end of his well-written and interesting article, I do not think that literature solves the problem of evil. In fact, it has confused me even more on multiple occasions. For example, in Stephen Crane’s The Open Boat, the Oiler, who worked the hardest to get to safety, drowns close to the shore of safety, while the narrator is randomly pushed by a wave into the safety of the sand. The correspondent remarks that, while his welcome and comfort onshore is warm, “a still and dripping shape was carried slowly up the beach, and the land's welcome for it could only be the different and sinister hospitality of the grave” (Crane 1368). The correspondent is carried by chance to safety, and the one who tries ends up in cruel fate’s arms in the end. It reminds me of my own personal experience. At the Rehab my cancer-stricken disabled father spent at for several months, I came into contact with many tragic stories, from 15 year old soccer players getting anurisms to DUI survivors. One particular situation was a man who had OD’d on drugs and was hospitl. I remember praying for him, but also thinking ‘how can one person not care about life like this man and my father care so much to fight for it?’ Well, in the end, the story goes on that my dad’s dead now, and the OD’d guy is probably still alive. Do not get me wrong that I want him dead, that is not my point. I am saying that I am confused about why the ones that try often seem to be the ones that try to survive are the victims of evil and the depravity of man. Captain Ahab dies in Moby Dick, Jay Gatsby is shot in The Great Gatsby, Paul Baumer in All Quiet on the Western Front dies on the day armistice is called for the Great War, and Augustus Waters in The Fault in Our Stars. While I agree with Cothran that these stories bring a strange comfort and meaning to the evil in our lives, and that conflict is necessary for a good story, I cannot believe that applying these literary devices to God’s plan is just so that God can have a ‘good story’. Does that not seem insensitive? I know that if someone told me that my father dying of cancer was just for a good story, I would be frustrated with that person. I feel I can speak for the parents of Newtown children that were shot, victims of Hurricane Katrina, Jews that died in the Holocaust, that the ‘good story’ analogy does not bode well with us, and that Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, or even John Milton’s works find the missing x in our hearts, solving the question of evil.
However, if you were to say that it helps us understand the evil that happened to us, I believe it would be more widely received. For example, the evil that Frodo struggles with in Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy does not simply just make the books a good story, or solve our own problems, but helps us apply Frodo’s imperfection to ourselves, and further understand it. Carraway’s anger and bitterness towards the apathy of the wealthy at the end of The Great Gatsby is understandable to us, but still begs the question of WHY it is there. Why does the white horse come in late sometimes, why does sleeping beauty not always wake up, and why does the guy not always get the girl he loves? These books do not answer those questions, but, I believe, point to a different way of handling these situations: by showing the greater light in the midst of the darkness.
Literature shows us how to deal with evil, but not solve why it is there. Even in bad examples such as Hamlet’s crazed revenge in the shakesperean play, Dr. Frankenstein’s countless fears in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, and John’s act of suicide in Brave New World by Aldous Huxley still point to where the light resides and how we should and should not deal with our problems. During family situations, we can learn from Hamlet that it is not wise to lash back at them in anger. We learn from Dr. Frankenstein to take accountability for our mistakes before they surmount to the unforgivable, and we learn from John that leaning towards despair and legalism does not cleanse us from our dirtiness. We learn from Bilbo that courage is not in the absence of fear, and from Augustus Waters that joy is not impossible even during turmoil. What if these stories, with eternity written on them, were simply pointing to another way? What if the question we should be answering is not even why is there evil in the world, but where is the light and how can we find it, grasp hold of it, and never let it go? What if that is where the human race would find x, solve the seemingly impossibly complex equation of the purpose of life and an even more urgent, perplexing question than the one of evil: why we exist.
My sister Madison wrote this in a response to an article by Martin Cothran.
