Of The Flesh Draft 2 is complete!
I'm quite pleased with how this one turned out! It still needs a bit of work, to be sure, but for a second draft it's very solid! My game plan is to let it rest for a bit, get it out to critique partners, write draft 3 based on feedback, and then... I'm going to query it!
That's right. I've decided to give traditional publishing a try.
I've loved self-publishing, but the fact is, Of The Flesh is the kind of book that would benefit from the trad pub process. I really hope it's able to find a home there, because I would love to get it out to all of you! In the meantime, I'm still planning to self-publish A Colder Home early next year, so there's that to look forward to!
This agent guide will be cleaned up as I work on the next draft of the book, I'm sure, but here's what I have in the meantime :)

Random Musings on Gale and His Relationship With Mystra
I find Gale's relationship with Mystra to be one of the most fascinating parts of his story. It’s a dynamic that can be viewed in many different ways, depending on how you approach it and I think that’s part of what makes it so compelling. While some might see it literally, I’d like to explore it through a more allegorical perspective, though I want to be clear: this is just one way to interpret their relationship, and other viewpoints are just as valuable. This isn't even the only way that I personally interpret them haha. (I just have to be nuanced, it's a compulsion truly.)
In literature and mythology, take Greek mythology, for instance, relationships between gods and mortals can often carry deeper, symbolic meanings. The gods aren’t always just powerful beings they can represent larger forces like nature, fate, or human desires. This approach, called allegorical interpretation, is something I find really enjoyable! It adds layers to a story.
Consider the famous story of Paris’s judgment of the goddesses. The goddess Eris, seeking to sow discord, throws a golden apple inscribed “for the fairest” into a wedding attended by Athena, Hera, and Aphrodite. They decide to have the mortal Paris judge who deserves the apple most out of the three of them and is thus the fairest.
Each goddess offers Paris a gift in exchange for the title. Athena offers great tactical ability, Hera promises leadership over vast kingdoms, and Aphrodite tempts him with the love of Helen, the most beautiful woman in the world (who happens to already be married). Paris chooses Aphrodite, gains Helen as a lover and this leads to the Trojan War. Beyond the literal reading, this story can be seen as desire (Aphrodite) overcoming both wisdom (Athena) and marriage (Hera). Paris's fatal flaw is his lust for Helen. The story can also be interpreted as Paris losing due to declining to accept both of the other offers. He fails strategically in the ensuing war and also causes the collapse of his own kingdom.
Mystra, as the living incarnation of the Weave, can be interpreted similarly. She isn’t merely Gale's ex-lover. She is magic itself, the force that gives Gale his entire identity. Their relationship transcends romance; it’s more like that of a man consumed by his craft to an unhealthy degree. Like a mathematician to mathematics, or a physicist to physics, he's in love with something that can't love him back.
His attempt to give Mystra a gift she's never received before, something truly incredible, is due to his belief that transcending all limits to somehow earn Mystra’s (and thus, magic’s and his life's work's) recognition is both possible and necessary. It was 100% done with the best intentions but tragically any all-consuming passion carries the risk of blowing up in your face. (Just look at Alfred Nobel, pun intended) And, due to the aforementioned "blow up", his emotional low and his measurable low in his abilities correspond quite directly
There is a cut dialogue from early access about how much of his power he lost after this:
You see, this fire – there was a time that I could make it come alive. That it would take the shape of a dragon and roar in delight. There was a time I could silence a Beholder with a word, and lift a tower from its foundations with a flourish. There was a time I was all but one with the Weave. But no more – a mere shadow of the wizard I used to be. Why? Because I’ve lost.
A key theme in their relationship (in my opinion) is not just Mystra’s rejection but what her rejection represents: The collapse of Gale’s identity as a powerful magic user. (An identity he's built his life around and sacrificed for ever since he was a child)
Without this, he starts self destructing. He has to make do with consuming scraps of magic rather than the all encompassing sort he used to receive from Mystra's presence.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
While Mystra’s treatment of Gale is undeniably harmful, I think it’s important to recognize that she is not cruel in a personal, calculated way. She is so out of touch with normal people that she’s more akin to a force of nature. As an arbiter of natural laws, she wants to control him/kill him because he represented a destabilizing influence, not out of any targeted animosity. (Which is arguably worse than outright hate depending on your point of view)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now for a bit of a change in topic I wanted to go over his different endings:
His "good" ending comes from the realization that magic, or any external force, cannot be the source of true self-worth. The deeper theme here, beyond just getting over an ex-relationship, is that Gale must learn to build relationships with people and and find a healthy balance between his work and personal life, rather than devoting himself wholly to impersonal things at the cost of his well-being. He has to learn that he is "Galenough," as @ekansbot once put it. Ultimately, his growth in this regard is best shown with his choice to embrace his ordinary, human last name "Dekarios", rather than defining himself solely as the archmage "of Waterdeep."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
More evidence about the meaning of names to him, earlier during the conversation with Mystra in the tabernacle, she will either call him "Gale Dekarios" if she's displeased to remind him of his humanity, or"Gale of Waterdeep" when pleased to inflate his ego with a title. This shows how revolutionary it is for him to willingly forego having a title at all in this ending as it had been something he sought in the past.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alternatively, and more fun for my tragedy-loving psyche, he can totally succumb to his flaws and lose himself. In this case the orb's desires fully supplant him as a person. He becomes a power hungry god, doomed to perpetuate the same callousness Mystra showed to him. His grand dreams of bettering the world fades, and his only goals shift to slowly gathering more power and followers and eventually challenging the rest of the gods. He entirely gives up on being a "person" he's the god of ambition now, and you can see it in the way he speaks how much he has mentally separated himself from the mortal world. He has fully given up on having a life outside of his obsessions. It’s quite dark. (Though not quite as dark as my absolute favorite, the Absolute ending, where you use thousands of mind controlled innocents to become Kratos.)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Something that's extra sad for you. If the player character chooses to break up with him after becoming a god he says "so I'm still not enough for you" Aghh it's horrible. His insecurities only get worse as a god.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Or... he could kill himself. Literally destroying his darker hungers (the orb) for an altruistic purpose, but he also, obviously, destroys himself in the process. Very sad indeed.
Now, here’s something I find fascinating:
If Gale chooses not to use the crown, nor to surrender it to Mystra, but instead lets it remain in the water, the orb stays within him but rather than being a catastrophe it actually becomes harmless and inert.
Why does this happen? Gale speculates that it's because he has found contentment due to the player character's romance with him.
Clip sourced from this video: https://youtu.be/gikRKEIpvQs
This reveals something crucial: the orb, from the very beginning, was tied to his own emotions. It was basically an extension of him all along. He was inadvertently the one driving the orb’s power. It was his own despair and obsession that were indirectly killing him the entire time! It's very tragic but also supremely interesting!
It is this somewhat gut wrenching realization, though, that makes this the best "good" ending. He doesn't have to apologize to Mystra to get a happy ending out of pity. Instead, it is his own emotional catharsis that resolves the problem of the orb internally, rather than it being fixed through external means. It also has a sort of Jungian quality to it that I really like. With the idea of integrating and accepting all parts of oneself (allowing the orb to remain, but becoming settled and integrated), rather than trying to shed them being a theme I think fits his character well. Additionally, he keeps the orb scar, which looks pretty neat. :)
#bg3#gale dekarios#gale of waterdeep#mystra#character analysis#i like the endings where he gets worse the best but that's just because i'm sick and twisted😔#his absolute ending is just really good ty larian for the evil update#hope you enjoyed my screenshots as well#when people do real world au's of gale and mystra the general way most go about it is to have her be a boss or something along those lines#this is cool!#but what i personally would do if i wanted it to align with this interpretation more#is to have her be a disembodied research project or general obsession that consumes his life#this is a bit rambly my apologies#i've already been editing it for so long i'm just going to release it into the world to be free

I MADE MYSELF AN EARTHMOVER

The idea that earthmover plushie was something i could realistically maybe make was beamed into my brain on friday may 10th at exactly 11:23 PM and then proceeded to consume my entire weekend. i did not know if this would work but i did it. i made him. my weird lopsided dog Benjamin
(I'd be happy to write up the pattern/instructions if people are interested- I think it'd be pretty simple to recreate since he's like 90% rectangles- but be warned that I have never tried to draft a plushie pattern from scratch before and it's kinda janky as hell the way the legs are attached feels like one of those illegal lego techniques so you have to promise not to make fun of me ok)
#I am so happy rn#I will probably spend the next day enjoying the amount of shitposting potential I now hold in my hands#i was thinking about adding more details like sequins for the city lights but i felt like adding anything would just make him less cuddly :#and let me be clear . i am Cuddling This Beast#ultrakill#my art#earthmover#told myself i would take a break from art after that last post. instead i let another project fully consume me for a whole weekend. help

Been awhile since I had a WIP I could play this with, so have a bit from To Consume
tw: violent imagery, homophobia??? (in context, although I don't know how obvious that is just from this excerpt... but, yeah, for context, that's what's happening here)
Her father stands on the lawn, shadow stretching across the brittle grass. The careworn lines of his face are not as familiar to Alya as they ought to be—every day, she swears the furrow in his brow grows deeper, the wrinkles of his frown more set in their way. He does not look in their direction as her mother parks the car, the engine cutting off clean as a choke chain. He says something to one of the movers hauling their couch up the porch, his low voice muffled by the glass. Alya grimaces at this. The last thing she wants right now is to be perceived, especially by strangers. She’s wearing travel clothes, ratty jeans an and old unravelling sweater. She’s sure her long brown hair is a mess from leaning against the window, gray eyes bloodshot from sleepless nights and stress. Her mother clocks her expression in the rearview mirror, the self-conscious touch to her disastrous hair. She chuckles. “What? Are you trying to look cute for those boys out there?” The words, delivered so lightly, hit like a gut punch. “No.” Her voice breaks. After everything, this is too much, one shade too close to a finishing blow. “Of course not. Mom, please don’t say stuff like that.” Her mother's smile fades. “I was only teasing, hon.” But she wasn’t. At least, not only. It’s the hopefulness beneath the tease that makes Alya want to scream, to be sick, to climb out of her skin. “But you know I don’t—” “Alya, stop.” Her mother’s voice doesn’t break, but it cracks. Spring ice under weight. “It was just a joke. I don’t want to argue.” Alya closes her eyes, the image of crawling out of her skin returning to her. She could present it to her mother like a coat, her now naked skeleton dripping gore, muscles sloughing away. Perhaps then her mother could find a daughter more suitable to wear it. She breathes out. The tone of this conversation is familiar, all too commonplace over the past few months. It doesn’t take much, lately, for words with her mother to turn into landmines. Better to flee before one of them detonates. “I’m going to go look at the house.” Alya flees the car, avoids eye contact with the movers, walks up the porch of her new home. Her father still doesn’t look at her. That, too, is familiar.

Hieron Zine Comic: The Violence of Its Maintenance
[Read the left side as one storyline, the right side as another]
"For every inside, an outside." / "Every border implies the violence of its maintenance."
For me and @wellnoe's piece for the Hieron Zine, we were excited to tell a story about Hella’s semi-involuntary status as a mascot of Ordennan empire and borders as a literal technology of death that played with comic borders and formatting! The title is, of course, from the Ayesha A. Siddiqi quote.
Script for the comic below the cut, which also serves as a rough image description:
Layout note: Panels are small relative to the page and “float” in the gutter space. Adelaide swims freely between them and speaks to Hella inside the panels’ borders. The comic is laid out vertically, mostly in two columns. Panels on the left are labeled L, the center labeled M, and right labeled R. Panel numbers denote which row of the overall page they’re on.
Page 1: 3 Rows
Panel M.1.A: Adaire hunched over a map of Hieron in a dimming twilight room.
Panel M.1.B: Close up of the map having Nacre added to it near the shore, and an outline sketched of its border, the pencil in Adaire’s hand.
Panel M.1.C: Adaire’s hand in close-up, partially erasing the border around Nacre.
Panel L.2: Hella outside the Ordennan border, at a tall gate. A guard looks at her suspiciously from the other side.
Adelaide to Panel L.2: Adelaide looks at Hella condescendingly.
Adelaide: Do you imagine that walls will keep Nacre’s gift out?
Panel R.2: Hella and Hadrian ride in a halfling-driven cart through the refugee camp towards the Ordennan military camp. Hadrian watches Hella for her reaction to seeing the refugees.
Panel L.3: Hella displays the emblem of the Tristes to a crowd of cheering soldiers, brandishing her sword in a stabbing gesture.
Soldiers: Is that– From the cleansing of Nacre– She killed the queen!
Adelaide to panel L.3: For every inside…
Panel R.3: Stornras Glasseye shows Hella and Hadrian a map of Ordenna’s planned invasion of Velas.
Adelaide to panel R.3: …an outside.
Page 2: 4 Rows
Panel L.1: Hella reads the book about her family being a line of traitors, inside the undersea cave. She is hunched over awkwardly, wet from swimming in, and visibly perturbed.
Adelaide to Panel L.1: Adelaide reads over Hella’s shoulder. She’s draped over the panel like a cat, one hand dangling inside and the other holding an apple to her mouth.
Adelaide: Our dear father did like that ancestor of yours, only for her to betray Nacre and then Ordenna. Varals love to hang people out to dry.
Panel R.1: Hadrian and Hella interrogating Iduna Fel. Hella holds a torch up. Iduna, seated and hands bound, looks up at them and snarls at the torch, speaking of how Quintrona should burn Rosemerrow to stop the undead.
Iduna Fel: We should be burning every place–every person–the curse has touched.
Adelaide to Panel R.1: A family of traitors fits right in with the Tristes.
Panel L.2.A: Hella is on tour of Ordenna. She looks out distantly at the countryside. A clothesline with clothing hanging from them forming figures like people separates Hella in the panel from a mine like the ones her father worked.
Panel L.3.B: Hella on tour in an urban center, looking lost. Train tracks separate Hella from a guard station.
Ordennan soldiers: Queenkiller! It’s the Queenkiller!
Adelaide to panels L.2: Adelaide’s teeth are bared, her lazy demeanor dropping for one vicious moment.
Adelaide:At least I remember that you should be called Kingkiller as well.
Panel R.2: Hella and Hadrian walking back through the refugee camp. Refugees do laundry, multiple clotheslines crossing the panel, the clothes partially obscuring Hella and Hadrian.
Adelaide to panel R.2: Do you believe your people to be better than me? They decide who dies to expand the borders of Ordenna.
Panel L.3: Hella marching in front of a company of Anchor in a square formation, Ordennan soldiers crowding around them. Hella is smiling stiffly, uncomfortable. She is wearing a shiny new uniform.
Panel R.3: Hella standing equally stiffly in front of a line of Pala-din that guard the Ordennan camp from the refugees. She watches a circle of refugees cooking and crafting, going about the business of their survival. Some are visibly undead. Two of the refugees are a Nacreite young Black sibling pair with an older boy and younger girl, invoking Calhoun and Adelaide. Hadrian in the background examines a pala-din, his stance mirroring theirs.
Adelaide to panel R.3: Adelaide looks at the siblings in panel R.3 but speaks over her shoulder to Hella on the left.
Adelaide: Is it so monstrous that Nacre grows so that more may live after death?
Panel L.4: Hella alone in a lavish Ordennan bedroom, looking out of place and small. Maybe in plain underclothes and curled up on a chair, looking angry.
Hella: Yes!
Her dialogue fills up the panel, crowding her.
Panel R.4: The refugees notice Hella and Hadrian and look at them warily. The boy steps in front of his sister. Hella looks small in the crowd of people. She holds a hand out to the boy.
Page 3: 3 Rows
Panel L.1: Hella in a lavish Ordennan ceremonial chamber, on a stage. She is dressed in fine clothing given to her. A pearl-studded brooch with an Ordennan motif is being pinned on her by some military-uniformed functionary.
Military functionary: For you, the spoils of our first battle.
Gathered soldiers and civilians: Queenkiller! Queenkiller! Queenkiller!
Panel R.1: Hella makes an awkward ‘open your hand’ gesture to the boy, who warily opens his hand.
Refugees: Isn’t she….That’s the Queenkiller. The Queenkiller?
Panel L2: Hella, with her head bowed, has her arms and shoulders draped with garlands of gems and pearls looted from Nacre. The ends of the strands run down out of the bottom and side of the panel.
Military functionary: May you always bear the fruits of our holy empire.
Panel R.2: The boy has a handful of apple candies poured into his palm. He looks up, defiantly. A few candies fall down outside the panel.
Adelaide, to both panels L.2 and R.2: She holds the end of a pearl garland in one hand and an apple candy in another
Adelaide: Then tell me…What are you going to do about it, Hella Varal?
Panel M.3.A: Adaire’s hand drawing the refugee camp in Knoll Hollow into a map of Rosemerrow.
Panel M.3.B: The Ordennan military camp being drawn outside the refugee camp.
Panel M.3.C: The wall around Rosemerrow being drawn between the refugee and Ordennan camps as a border.
