Wernher von Braun

It was spring in 1912 and Wernher von Braun is born into a torn and devastated Germany. He would soon become a legend within the space exploration hall of fame. He grew up reading Jukes Verne and H.G. Wells, feeding his science-fiction imagination that would soon manifest into rocketry greatness.

His keen interest in rocket development led him to the German Army in 1929. He was a significant help to the German Society for Space Travel. They promoted him and elected him to finally build rockets. However, Braun quickly found himself in a pool of controversial activities.

In sure time Braun, technical director, became the leader of the “rocket team” and forced labor factory called Mittlewerk. This secret factory in Peenemünde became the home of the liquid propellant missile. It had a 200-pound warhead, extending 46 feet and lands on a target up to 500 miles away, an astonishment at the time. It was virtually impossible to stop after launching and had effectively killed 2724 people and critically injured another six thousand. This secret weapon eventually became the V-2 ballistic missile for the Nazis in the Second World War. After working with the team for multiple years and successfully building two rockets, he received a Ph.D in physics in 1934. Everything had been going smoothly, Braun was in his prime and the rockets were successful.

The Red Army’s invasion of the Peenemunde Research Station eventually led Braun to surrender to the U.S. Army along with 40 other German rocket scientists. The US decided to have them work on nuclear missiles. Braun, with a new citizenship and frame of mind was ready to get back to work. He developed the A4 and supersonic anti-aircraft missile, Wasserfall. 

In 1952, fifteen years post World War II, Project Paperclip was tested. This so-called “project” was designed to prepare the foundation of the American Space Program. Braun took his position once again as technical director, for US Army's Ballistic Missile Agency in Redstone, Alabama. Their experiments consisted of many. One of them, The Redstone Rocket, one that Joseph Goebbels' claimed: “That the ‘machine’ (Vengeance Weapon No.2) to be a step in the climb toward space”. Another was, Jupiter-C, a modified ballistic missile with three solid propellant upper stages. Also manufactured were Juno and Pershing missiles. The U.S. government quickly became interested. Finally, Explorer I was launched, the first US earth satellite to successfully send into space.

Braun directed Marshall Space Flight Center and developed Saturn Rocket that helped US land on the moon in 1969, a monumental victory.

Sadly, in 1972, Braun resigned his position as director after Richard Nixon, the president in office at the time, dramatically reduced space budget.

But retiring was not an option, he became vice-president of Fairchild Industries, an Aerospace Company.

Considered an honorary US citizen, Braun became a prominent spokesperson in space exploration in the 1950s. He eventually died of cancer in 1977.

Wernher von Braun, started as an intelligent and starved mathematician, using his work for negative consequence, only to be reborn and assist our country with developments in space conquest and exploration. Braun, creator who propelled Americans to the moon had evolved as both an innovator and a man.
