Okay, so the canonically confirmed Cang Qiong peaks are:

Qiong Ding (leader peak, CEO peak, politician/diplomacy peak, admin peak, etc)

Qing Jing (scholar & artists peak, knowledge peak, strategic advisor peak, etc)

Wan Jian (sword guy peak, blacksmith peak, armory peak, etc)

An Ding (logistics peak, servants peak, peak of the cang qiong labor party, delivery guys & messengers peak, supplies & catering peak, etc)

Xian Shu (gender segregation peak: girl flavor)

UNKNOWN

Bai Zhan (shounen anime peak)

Qian Cao (healer peak, pharmacy peak, first responders peak, etc)

Ku Xing (gender segregation peak: boy flavor, ascetic peak)

Zui Xian (alcohol peak)

UNKNOWN

So we only have three peaks that are entirely unnamed and unaccounted for. This has pretty good utility if you want to do a transmigration fic where Airplane and Shen Yuan are there as peak lords, but so are OG Shang Qinghua and Shen Qingqiu. You can just give them two of the three mystery peaks, and then there's only one peak remaining for an OC and kapow, you've got all twelve peak lords sorted.

But the question of course, is what should these peaks actually be? What should they specialize in?

Fandom has argued in favor of a Beast Peak, and I actually endorse this idea, although I think specializing in demonic beasts is more of a Bai Zhan and Qing Jing thing. But while we can suppose that between An Ding, Qian Cao, and (probably) Zui Xian the agricultural needs of the sect are being met (or met sufficiently for what they can also supplement through trade), there's no clear existing peak to outsource things like training spirit animals or keeping any livestock that the peak might require. And hey, if there is a Beast Peak, then them also having some expertise in demonic beasts would be interesting.

I think the Beast Peak would slot in most logically between Xian Shu and Bai Zhan.

For the lowest peaks, things get more interesting. While there are obvious roles such as talisman making, barriers, musical cultivation, etc, most of those things seem like they'd either be covered by one of the other peaks (i.e. Qing Jing and musical cultivation) or else would be strange things for the sect to acquire so late, literally after the peak that specializes entirely in brewing.

But, that actually can work out, if we assume that these peaks have taken as specialties things that were previously secondary or tertiary interests to other peaks. Perhaps even owing their origins to particularly capable disciples from the other, more highly ranked peaks who showed such prodigal skill or innovation in that area that they were allowed to establish new peaks focusing on it.

For my money, I'd go with a Barrier Peak, specializing in protective barriers, talismans, and spiritual cultivation that shot off from Qing Jing during some long-prior generation. This peak could also be responsible for guard duties in the sect, basically sending disciples to close off unsafe or prohibited areas, to manage things like access to the various branches of the Lingxi caves, sealing off dangerous items, and (probably) helping to maintain existing barriers, arrays, and other such systems throughout the sect.

I think this peak would be a decent fit for Airplane, as it would once again situate him pretty close to matters of daily sect operations, and put him in position to know a lot of the secrets and goings on beneath the surface of things. So a plausible explanation for his authorial knowledge and insights would simply be, Barrier Peak are the flies on the wall of a lot of high-level matters. If someone breaks into a restricted area, they know about it. If someone wants something hidden, sealed, or disguised, they know about it.

Bonus angst: this would probably mean that the Barrier Peak's head disciple assisted in sealing a young Yue Qi inside the Lingxi Caves with Xuan Su. If that's Airplane, well, that's twisting a knife a bit now isn't it?

Which just leaves peak no.12, which frankly could be any damn thing. After Booze Peak and Girl Peak, the field is wide open. Dance Battle Peak. Transit System Peak. Spiritually Infused Textiles Peak.

My personal favorite, though, is Sex Worker Peak. Not only because that is the most fanfic-y option, but also because it actually kind of makes sense.

The PIDWorld is just chock full of fuck-or-die tropes, which makes there are countless substances, ailments, curses, etc that can only be cured via sex. Not just for cultivators, but also for everyone else in the world. Like imagine you're an NPC magistrate or something just out there managing your district, having only the most tangential connection to the plot, and one day you're going for a walk and you trip and fall and manage to land right in a field full of sex pollen that cropped up like weeds overnight. Because that's just how this shit works, it doesn't wait for the protagonist to exist in order to activate, it's all got to be out there all the time in order to be there when the wife plot happens, and also for various experts to have accumulated all the mandatory exposition points about how it works.

But you're just some normal guy! You don't want to die of Horny, but the best way to clear this up is not just to have sex, but to have sex with a cultivator who is at least moderately good at using the exchange of spiritual energy to purge your body of the sex pollen poison.

Unless you're lucky enough to know someone, you're probably going to be in the market for professional help here, like even apart from all the other reasons people like to hire sex workers. This is a situation that probably happens fairly often and for which "hire someone to fix it and then move on with your life" is probably the ideal solution. As a bonus, a professional sex cultivation expert is probably also going to minimize your risks for unwanted side effect like STDs and pregnancy, too.

So, imagine we have Qian Cao peak struggling under the workload of all these requests for help with dual cultivation. The problem isn't prudery, but that this stuff is so commonplace it eats up time that could also be allocated to things like research and other medical emergencies. Plus, you have political leaders (kings, princes, emperors, etc) always demanding to be sent your "best" disciples to attend to them, when quite frankly their condition is something even an outer disciple could handle in less time than it would take them to travel out to their location, and these fuckers are not-infrequently liable to try and steal your people away into concubinage too.

One day then, much like with Qing Jing and the Barrier Peak, the Qian Cao peak lord of yore gets fucking fed up and is just like, this requires it's own department. And the sect leader of that era, knowing what was good for her, was like yes okay rubber stamp that we have twelve peaks now. Twelve's a good number we probably should have done this sooner anyway. What do you mean we don't have that much mountain? Eh, we'll haul some dirt in and make it happen.

Other Sex Worker Peak Thoughts:

Obviously, raising disciples from the age of ten upwards into this kind of work is controversial at best. Depending on tone, a fic author could either accept that grooming children for sex work was a historical practice and examine the fucked-up-ness of it all, or, we could go another direction and make a case that this is generally the peak which takes on older prospective disciples.

After all, dual cultivation is actually good at helping with setbacks and restoring a damaged cultivation base. You could argue for it being the ideal cultivation approach for latecomers. There could even be a precedent for adult disciples from the other peaks transferring to the Twelfth Peak/Sex Worker Peak if they show an aptitude for the work, and for disciples to temporarily join them as part of repairing or preventing damage from qi deviations.

This could also be a contributing factor to Shen Jiu being like, I have to not only be on Qing Jing Peak but also be the absolute boss of Qing Jing Peak with as few people able to gainsay me as possible, because he's terrified of being ordered to pimp himself out.

Not that he would be, though, because I imagine the sexpert cultivators are pretty well aware of how trauma works and who does or doesn't actually have the right temperament for their business, or what jobs within that business. It's their specialty, after all. If someone is going to have a panic attack and qi deviate over doing the job, that someone is not a good candidate for the job, or for these types of treatments overall.

Sometimes Twelfth Peak loses people on account of them falling in love with their clients or deciding to take some king up on his concubinage offers, but it happens less than one might think. After all, it's basically like working for the best brothel in existence. They have rigorous hygiene and healthcare standards, you get access to all the generalized medical care from Qian Cao, travel expenses are covered and you don't have to work out of your home if you don't want to, your food and housing is supplied by the sect, you're trained in cultivation and martial arts, with a shot at achieving immortality, and you don't even have to work every day because the jobs are contingent on what's being requested, not on you making rent money. In addition to physical cultivation, you can also make and sell tons of erotic art or "love tokens" and it will sell for a lot because of the social mystique of sexy cultivators. A pair of twelfth peak lord's panties probably goes for just as much as one of Shen Qingqiu's fancy calligraphy paintings. So unless you really want to live with some dude, switching over to depending on him for your upkeep doesn't seem all that appealing as a prospect.

Additional fun with this idea is that it would also potentially be an interesting peak lord role for either Airplane or Shen Yuan to end up in. Airplane would probably be like, well I guess this is karma for putting so much gratuitous smut in my stories, and then actually manage the hell out of the whole peak and enjoy himself by only taking on the jobs he actually cares to. Not a bad gig, especially compared to his previous grind. On the other hand, Shen Yuan's internal freak out and subsequent attempts to somehow be the Sex Peak Lord while not actually having any sex would be a potential comedy/suspense goldmine.

I was discussing the new Deltarune chapters with a friend yesterday, and in the wake of Chapter 4 and some of the foreshadowing surrounding Asgore, something struck us about him.

Asgore comes across as a goof, a complete wreck of a man who gives away his flowers instead of selling them, to the point where the Mayor Carol is apparently threatening to kick him out. His constant attempts to woo his former wife Toriel are as doomed as they are cringeworthy. He comes across as an all-around loser who can't get his act together, neither for love nor for money, who has to resort to eating free pickles from Sans, the man who we now know is cavorting with Toriel.

...and yet.

Asgore was the chief of police, before he was apparently forced to step down in disgrace (the details of which are unclear to us due to Kris's avoidance of the topic) - this is a role that would require a great deal of competence and expertise, not to mention strength and dedication. It's mentioned that Undyne, his successor, struggles to fill his boots in the position, which suggests that he was respected in his role, and supposedly did a satisfactory job in it.

Now, in Chapter 4, we see Asgore emerge from the bushes after church to try and gift Toriel yet another bouquet. She, of course, beats a hasty retreat, whereupon he gives Kris a single rose (remember this - this will be important later).

Then, at the Holiday Residence, while clambering through the air vents as the SOUL, we can find Asgore in the bathroom, apparently employed by Carol as a housekeeper, at which point he'll talk about settling something "once and for all" and that he's "got to look again". We can find him again in Carol's bedroom, mentioning something about showing Toriel "what really happened" and that she'll "have to believe me" that he was "just trying to protect everyone."

It's clear that Asgore is using his access to the Holiday household in order to find some sort of evidence that will shed light on an unspecified event... which we would assume to be Dess's disappearance, the event that would have seemingly resulted in his dismissal from the force. All of this to say that Asgore is not quite the complete failure of a person he's made out to be in prior chapters - he's looking for something, and he has a plan to set some kind of record straight and make it so that his family can be happy again.

Right, and what does any of this have to do with Kris, exactly? Why is the giving of a single rose to his child significant? Well, the short answer is - I think that Asgore knows, or has figured out, that Kris is being manipulated and coerced by Carol. It's not much of a stretch to assume this - Kris is his child who he loves dearly, enough to bearhug them when we first meet him in Chapter 1, and he could have deduced that something was amiss with them through his skills as a former police chief. But he wouldn't be able to act directly to help them, seeing how Carol has such a tight leash on the both of them. So they'd have to communicate in secret.

In code.

Look again at the screenshot at the top of this post. Look at how Asgore is winking, and how he says "Our secret." We didn't think about it before, because we just assumed Asgore was being his usual hopelessly Divorced self... but stop now and consider how ridiculous this premise is. It's NO secret whatsoever that Asgore gives his flowers away, and many of them to Toriel. On top of that, there's a decent chance he KNOWS she won't even look at them, even if Kris DID give them to her. Because they were never meant for Toriel in the first place.

Asgore is giving flowers to Kris as a coded form of communication - something that I expect he'd have good knowledge of as, again, a former chief of police. And it's not unreasonable, again, to assume that perhaps Kris might have picked up on some of this, growing up with their adoptive father being in the force. And Carol would have great difficulty detecting the code in the first place, because that's just what bumbling old Asgore does - he gives flowers away to EVERYBODY. And even if she thought something was up, surely he's not sending coded messages to everyone in Hometown, right? Of course not - they're chaff, noise to obscure the fact that he is communicating with Kris right under her nose.

We can skip the bouquet in chapter 1, but we cannot skip the rose in chapter 4. Whatever message he meant to impart to Kris, they WILL have picked up on it, and it's something that may become significant in Chapter 5, which is heavily implied to take place in Asgore's flower shop.

Has Asgore had us all fooled this entire time?

I reread the IA's contemporaneous post justifying their "National Emergency Library", and one of the things that struck me is just how selfish it was.

(It was also full of falsehoods, ranging from exaggeration to outright lies, but that's another matter.)

While 2020 feels like it was several decades in the past, it was actually only a few years ago. And I remember March of 2020! I was there! And oh my god, is this post right in line with every other selfish, demanding asshole determined to make a global pandemic all about themselves!

First of all, there is the language of the post - it is a "tremendous and historic outage" that books are unavailable to patrons because libraries are closed for the pandemic. "Right now, today, there are 650 million books that tax-paying citizens have paid to access that are sitting on shelves in closed libraries, inaccessible to them."

Missing from this outrage is a recognition that, like. Librarians are people. They get sick, and die.

They did get sick, and died.

Libraries were closed not only to protect patrons and the public, but librarians too. Libraries were closed to protect people, human beings. Because generally speaking, even the most enthusiastic supporters of access to books and knowledge, prioritize lives over books.

The AI's post, however, reeks of an entitlement to things that *my* tax dollars paid for. Libraries and library collections aren't a public good. They're something *I* should be able to access anytime I want, damn the context or the consequences.

(Was it also a historic outrage when I had to wait several months to check out Nona the Ninth, because so many other people were checking it out?)

Second, as I said, I remember early 2020. And in spring and summer of 2020, there was more free content on the internet than before or since. So many people and so many institutions were bending over backwards to provide people with books and tv shows and music and podcasts and virtual tours and collections and just about anything that someone could figure out how to digitize. So many people were giving away books for free, or writing/recording new content to give away for free. I can't even remember how many times I heard or read someone telling their readers or listeners just to pay what they could, if they could. So many people and institutions were giving away so much, do so much, to provide access to knowledge and books and entertainment and information.

And in that moment, the IA decided to steal from people. When so many people, so many authors, were acting so selflessly, they decided that it wasn't good enough. And instead of giving away themselves, they decided to steal from authors and pat themselves on the back for "meet[ing] this unprecedented need," when they didn't even actually do anything themselves. Or maybe more accurately, the only thing they did was something irrelevant to the actual needs of the community, something they wanted to do anyway, something to try to use a pandemic as an excuse to advance their agenda.

Because third, there is zero concern for the population of patrons actually most impacted by the closure. The IA cares, to a fault, only about information being digitized.* But many people who use physical libraries, many of the people most impacted by their closure, are people who do not have access to the AI's so-called "open library." And people who could access digital books generally continued to have access to their library's e-book services, and to tons of other free content. The patrons who were actually in the most need are ignored as irrelevant.

*And I want to be clear - they care that information is digitized, not about digital access. "Access" means more than information being digitized and theoretically being able to be read.

It's so clear that IA didn't really care about the patrons of physical libraries. Instead, they saw a real problem, and instead of working toward any solutions, decided to use it as a prop to push their own agenda. (Again, while people were dying.)

It's just all so deeply selfish.

that child wanted someone TO TAKE CARE OF HIM!!!! that he was starstruck by shen jiu's immortal appearance, by that otherworldly immortal CHOOSING HIM!!!!! (this is the important bit!) doesn't mean he "had a crush". please. don't cheapen lbh's complexity like that. he thought he was getting a shifu, a shizun, a father figure. and that hope got completely obliterated the same day, and over and over with each pacing day, as the years went by.

"You were supposed to love me because you choose me" it's SOOOO daddy issues coded, c'mon.

do you know how many things SY!SQQ had to do to WIN Binghe over????? let me make you a list of the many times SY!SQQ was kind and the effect it had on Binghe:

--Giving Binghe medicine to treat his wounds (that didn't win Binghe's heart, it make him wary of this new development)

--Making Binghe ride with him on the carriage AND smiling at him (that didn't win Binghe's heart, but it made him go doki doki)

--When the OOC lock unfroze, promising that he would protect BInghe from the on (that didn't win Binghe's heart, but it did soften him and made him believe in SQQ, since the words were backed by his actions against the Skinner demon in order to save LBH and NYY)

--Giving Binghe a new cultivation manual ((that didn't win Binghe's heart, but "SHIZUN GAVE THIS TO ME!" For someone who doesn't have anything, being gifted something so precious was really meaningful)

--At the demon invasion, VERBALLY and OPENLY stating that he was 1000% sure Binghe would win. (that didn't win Binghe's heart-- no no, wait, this is it. This is truly the start of it all, because SQQ BELIEVED IN HIM. Listen. Listen. That level of blind faith was something that REWIRED Binghe's brain. He had NO ONE to believe in him until then!)

--When SQQ got poisoned by Without a Cure to protect Binghe, at the cost of his own life (BANG!!!!!! HERE WE GO!! The beginning of the congee making saga!! )

--Protecting Binghe FROM HIMSELF in the dream realm

--Treating him as the specialest boy in the world for almost 3 years

it's VERY IMPORTANT to understand that what won Binghe's love was Shen Qingqiu's UNCONDITIONAL LOVE: the willingness to put himself in harm's way to protect Binghe, give Binghe what he needs (a proper place to sleep, attention, encouragement, lessons, access to knowledge, etc), caring for Binghe in any way necessary, taking REVENGE on Binghe's name to punish his bullies; and the decisiveness with which he did all that, the fact that Shen Qingqiu never ever truly regrets sacrificing himself for and loving Binghe.

and with all that in one side, Binghe decided to RECIPROCATE. because that's just how he loves, and what he felt SQQ's love for him deserved in turn.

it was never "woah pretty immortal 😳"

now, after everything i've said, do you actually think that someone like Shen Jiu would EVER qualify for the esteemed position of "Binghe's loved one"?

pd: well, the sexual attraction does mean he actually went "pretty immortal 😳" at some point, but it's not like that would be enough for binghe lol the unconditional love made the attraction stronger. if the novel hadn't gone that route, sqq would have been just binghe's sexual awakening

doodled some baby ultra beasts (edit: now it’s all of them!)

info below the cut :3

baby nihilego (UB phoresis) is a pure rock type. it doesn’t have access to its adult form’s mind-altering poisons, but it will still try to sit on other creatures’ heads, possibly hoping they will transport them somewhere new as they aren’t very good at the whole “moving efficiently” thing yet, either. it’s more or less just a smaller nihilego, given how baby jellyfish are just smaller versions of their parents

baby buzzwole (UB pest) is a pure bug type. while it has wings, it isn’t very strong yet and can barely fly, though it is incredibly determined when going after prey. it’s more of an annoyance than a threat, and typically has to go after slow moving or sleeping prey to actually get a chance to bite them. it’s based off of a mosquito larvae (albeit with wings) and the red parts on its head resemble overinflated pool floaties

baby pheromosa (UB nymph) is a pure bug type. they lack adult pheromosa’s pheromones, but will follow their parent’s scent trail very closely, learning crucial behaviors through mimicry. despite adult pheromosa’s aloof appearance, they will fiercely protect their young, keeping the curious, exploratory child out of trouble. it’s mostly just a smaller pheromosa, since baby cockroaches also just look like smaller versions of their parents, but the antennae shape is supposed to resemble a bow

baby xurkitree (UB spark) is a pure electric type. they will float on the wind to disperse from their parent, plugging their tails into the ground once they find an adequate spot. they will sometimes be seen linking together, forming long, twinkling strings. they are based off of christmas lights, specifically the spare bulbs, and when they evolve, it’s like a lightbulb bursting

baby celesteela (UB sprout) is a steel/grass type. as seen in the anime, they can be found buried underground in a dormant state awaiting proper growing conditions. once unearthed, they grow at a rapid rate, evolving quickly into celesteela. i didn’t design it, but its design is based off of a bamboo shoot and a swaddled baby

baby kartana (UB cut) is a grass/steel type. while they seem small and harmless, they have a tendency to spin rapidly towards anything that catches their attention, struggling to stop and slicing into it or even getting stuck in walls and trees. sometimes adult kartana can be seen commanding small swarms of them. i struggled with this one, but they’re based off of paper fortune tellers and ninja stars

baby guzzlord (UB hangry) is a dark/dragon type. they will gladly eat anything that is presented to them, remaining jovial and endearing so long as they have something to snack on, but will throw rather destructive tantrums once they get hungry again, letting out terrible, shrieking cries. adult guzzlord often abandon their own young out of annoyance, preferring to pursue their own gluttony alone. their design is mostly just a smaller version of guzzlord, though they vaguely resemble a jack o lantern, and the patterns on their knees resemble band-aids

baby stakataka (UB component) is a pure rock type. it is less of a baby and more like a single piece of the group making up an “adult” stakataka, these pieces very rarely being seen on their own. when crossing paths, adult stakataka won’t redirect their movements, each group sort of passing through each other and swapping pieces in the process, potentially as a way to share their knowledge. researchers disagree on whether it an individual piece would be called a “stako” or a “taka”

baby blacephalon (UB pop) is a fire/ghost type. when hit with a physical attack, the balloon making up its head will expand, stronger attacks causing larger growth. when significantly stressed, it will explode into a shower of confetti meant to stun or distract its attacker, allowing the body to run away, regrowing its head shortly after. i mostly just wanted this design to look weird, but it is loosely based off of those carnival games where you hit a target and it inflates a balloon, those confetti balloons where the confetti mostly sticks to the sides, and those toys that can’t be knocked over
