i marathoned all* the puppet master movies recently and i'm so out of it
*not including the 2018 reboot cuz i'm not touching that with a pole of ANY length
i'd already seen a couple of them beforehand so seeing all of them in succession was an adventure. 1-3 i'd say were the really good ones. i also really enjoyed 2-5 a lot, they were fun!
then things started going downhill pretty fast. 6 had potential but it DRAGGED oh gosh it dragged. then i was just kind of "uhh hmmm uh huh" for the next few movies. puppet master vs. demonic toys was uhh... something. corey feldman was doing his best to salvage it so it had a total of 1 (one) redeeming quality but i would never want to ever watch it again. i actually also watched demonic toys in preparation for it and i hated it BUT i did watch the version presented by elvira so that actually made it KINDA worth it.
then i got to the axis trilogy and i had to hit 2x speed to even get through them cuz holy frick idk what went wrong but those scripts... absolutely insufferable...
i still remained on my kick tho so i read the action lab comics and got total whiplash from how genuinely good they were.
now i'm just kinda sitting here going through puppet withdrawal tbh :/ really fun overall really good franchise even though i guess at this point the MAJORITY of the movies were flops to me. but aint that just the way with most massive horror franchises.
anyway here's my takeaway

Note
I was just scrolling through the Puppet Master tag and saw your post about Charles Band’s new book and how he is a controversial figure, and I wanted to ask why is that? I have tried looking it up myself, but could not find anything that would warrant any red flags
Okay, so I'm gonna preface this with two things. 1) it's currently 5am, I just woke up, I'm probably forgetting something important. 2) this is gonna be really anticlimactic.
Basically, a lot of people in the puppet master fandom view Charles Band as the sole person responsible for the decline of the franchise. Basically, because he kept insisting on making cheaper and cheaper films the effects got worse, and once he finally took the reins as director the films descended into worthless schlock.
I don't 100% agree with that sentiment, but there are definitely more... Questionable elements as you get into later entries (see: literally the entire axis trilogy) and Charlie's personal fixation with the Nazis and Nazisploitation films is definitely a part of that decline.
It's more helpful to look at the series that he helmed from day one and see how Puppet Master has shifted in that direction over time. Evil Bong and Gingerdead Man are good examples. A focus on crude humor and shock value over actual filmmaking.
It's also relevant that Charlie... He isn't a good director. He's a money man, he funds projects, but once be steps behind the camera and shoulders that burden... He fumbles.
I admire Charles Band. I think he's a fascinating person, I think it's evident that he has a deep passion for filmmaking, I think he seems like a guy you could have a drink and shoot the shit with.
But this is a very roundabout way of not really answering your question. Why is he so controversial? Well... Because a lot of people are really passionate about this franchise, and Charles Band as the producer and director for the later entries is the easiest place to put the blame when we start seeing franchise decay. I don't think they're wrong, but I also think that it's at least a little more nuanced than I might have previously made it seem. He's controversial because he's the face of the brand, and the brand is going down the shitter.

Puppet Master Axis Termination
Puppet Master Axis Termination Review #puppetmaster #fullmoonfeatures
Puppet Master Axis Termination is a mixed bag of Nazi’s, psychics, and a group of underdogs trying to get a hold of Toulon’s secret formula. Add a ton of blood, and a dash of gore and you get a not too bad final movie in the Axis trilogy. Though admittedly, I do like Bombshell. "Puppet Master: Axis Termination"- It sadly might be time for those delightful killer-dolls to throw in the towel for good...
Say what you will about creator Charles Band's long running low- budget killer-doll franchise "Puppet Master." The fact is for darned-near close to thirty years now, the series has managed to continue on with relative competence, while maintaining at least a certain degree of imagination and low-brow entertainment in each new chapter. From the fun and sometimes genuinely creepy initial trilogy, through the kitschy 90's gems that were the fourth and fifth chapters, and indeed through a surprisingly fun prequel in the 'Retro' spin-off... "Puppet Master" had done pretty well for itself over the years. Unfortunately, a troubling noticeable trend has plagued more recent entries in the saga, and it's becoming increasingly clear that at a certain point, enough is enough. Hindered by lower budgets and a general apathetic feeling of "been there, done that", the last few films have come across as a mere shadow of what the series once was, and the most recent chapter- 2017's "Axis Termination"- is perhaps the worst offender. While not objectively the worst of the series in terms of story, it's just so wholly unremarkable and thrown-together that you can't help but feel cold and disconnected from the opening sequence through the final climactic battle. And it's a sign that it sadly might be time for those delightful killer dolls to finally throw in the towel for good. At least in terms of the original series continuity. "Axis Termination" follows an unlikely group of heroes who are brought together by the allied force during World War II. Each member gifted in some way- including some with magical and psychic abilities- the team are given the mission to work alongside the puppets of Andre Toulon in order to battle a dreaded group of Nazis whom are seeking to gain Toulon's formula for everlasting life. However, when the daughter of team leader Dr. Ivan Ivanov (George Appleby) is kidnapped, matters take a personal turn, and it becomes a mission of vengeance. To give some minor credit where it is due, the concept is actually quite fun, and it serves as an interesting enough follow-up to the previous two movies, which were similarly placed in a World War II setting. It creates a unique atmosphere allows for some decent contrast with more modern entries in the series. The idea of a borderline superhero-inspired team of allied forces is also quite amusing, and I actually genuinely liked Appleby as the gifted Dr. Ivanov- a man suffering dwarfism who is frequently ridiculed, yet also holds more power than even he will admit to. Unfortunately, a likable lead and a funky concept can only get you so far, especially when the movie doesn't know what to do with them. "Axis Termination" feels strained... coming across as too rushed and undeveloped, yet also somehow feeling dull and over-padded. And look, I understand that there was simply no real money to work with... but that doesn't excuse shoddy situational writing and half-baked character development. It's a poorly constructed, slap-dash effort that feels like it was put together out of obligation moreso than motivation. The story is minimal and lacks proper build-up or conclusion, there's a distinct lack of stakes and shockingly the puppets themselves- the stars of the series- feel tacked on and superfluous. Visually the film is flimsy and has a really cheap, tacky look to it. And given the modern age of digital photography, I can't just sit back and act like that's OK anymore. Anyone with a cheap DSLR and some shop-lights can make something that looks semi- professional. So it's hard to excuse people with decades of experience giving us such visual drivel. Director Band, returning to helm the series once again, doesn't seem to care much. His choice in shots, composition and flow is suspect at best, and lacks any real thought. It's put together in the blandest of ways- every scene being composed of simple wide shots and shot-reverse-shot editing, and the few times he tries to do anything fun with the camera, it comes off as hockey and out of left field. This isn't made any better by the woeful acting, with the bulk of the cast looking very uncomfortable on-camera. It's unintentionally amusing, and some genuinely cringe-worthy line-deliveries left me chuckling when it clearly wasn't appropriate. As it stands, "Puppet Master: Axis Termination" might not quite be the worst of the series, but it's a continuation of the general downgrade in quality that has occurred over the past few installments, and it really feels like the series is dead in the water at this point. There's no money to build creative effects or kills anymore. There's no motivation on the part of the filmmakers to try and take the series in new and interesting directions. And it all feels so by-the-books that it comes across as a wholly pointless endeavor. Thankfully, there is some hope for the franchise with a somewhat higher-budgeted reboot in the works. But as it stands, I think I'm pretty much done with the original series. "Axis Termination" musters up a very poor 2 out of 10. I wouldn't even really recommend it to fans.

This sucks now we have both Friday the 13th and Halloween both in limbo is there any good news in regards to any of our favorite old school franchises?
Cult of Chucky is currently filming with release date set for this October.
Hellraiser: Judgment is finished with a limited theatrical/VOD release set for October as well.
Leatherface is complete and is expected to have a release date set shortly.
Suspiria has completed filming and has revealed that it is not a remake but a semi-sequel, which means fans can rest easy knowing that it doesn’t retread the first and can fit comfortably as a spinoff of the Three Mothers trilogy.
Ash vs. Evil Dead is expected to launch its third season by the end of the year.
Scream will also be heading into a third, albeit shorter, season.
Puppet Master: Axis Termination has completed filming and might be a step-up over recent entries, as crowdfunding money is being put into the effects.
Children of the Corn: Runaway has completed production, if that’s your thing. Worth noting that this sequel was actually directed by Feast’s John Gulager.
Bates Motel will go full Psycho with its final season, debuting later this month, I believe.
IT has completed filming, has confirmed its R-rating and will hit theaters on September 8th.
Saw: Legacy will hit theaters on October 27th. It has also completed filming and is worth noting because the franchise is 13 years old at this point.
There’s still plenty going on right now to keep the love of these classic horror franchises and characters alive. None of these things above are rumored. They’re all things that are completing production or have already been made. With that in mind, plus all of the promising original horror on the horizon, it’s looking like a really solid year for the genre even without Friday the 13th or Halloween.
UPDATE:
Blumhouse’s Halloween reboot will be directed by David Gordon Green from a script co-written by Green and Danny McBride. This news comes from announcements just made via Blumhouse and from John Carpenter himself via his Facebook page. Release date set for October 19 of next year.

[From the Archives] Chatting with Shawn Gabborin about Charles Band’s Puppet Master
[From the Archives] Chatting with Shawn Gabborin about Charles Band’s Puppet Master and #SDCC2018 recap #horror #comics #interview #fullmoonfeatures coming Dollman Kills the Full Moon Universe
By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)
One of the best horror comics from 2015 is Puppet Master published by Action Lab Comics. A few years later, the series abruptly ended, and Curtain Callreleased to tie up loose ends. Written by Shawn Gabborin and drawn by Michela Da Sacco, the tale continues down the path had the movies been able to continue prior to the Axis trilogy. This new saga fits in an odd…

Puppet Master X Axis Rising
Puppet Master X Axis Rising Review #puppetmaster #fullmoonfeatures
Well, what can I say about Puppet Master X: Axis Rising? No really. I’m kind of at a loss on what to say. The first red flag for me is that the two main lead characters, our survivors from the previous movie Danny and Beth, is RECAST!?!?!?! Why? If you know you are doing a trilogy, why not keep the same actors? Sigh. Photo Credit: Amazon Released: Sep 15, 2012Runtime: 86 minsDirector: Charles…

The ultimate weapons fall into the wrong hands in the trailer for Puppet Master: Axis Termination. It’s the eleventh installment in the long-running Puppet Master franchise and the conclusion to the the World War II-set Axis trilogy.
A release date has not been set, but the film is due out later this year from Full Moon Features. It’s directed by Full Moon head honcho Charles Band, who produced the entire Puppet Master franchise and helmed the previous entries in the Axis trilogy.

Axis Termination is not to be confused with Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich, the forthcoming, bigger-budgeted reboot of the franchise. Band alleged allowed the new version to be made only under the agreement that he could continue his series as well. Yes, we live in a world with two Puppet Master franchises. What a time to be alive.
