Not defending ai art, genuinely asking: does the "If you don't make it with your own hands it doesn't count" argument equally apply to photography, in your opinion? The exact same criticism was leveled against it when cameras started to become widespread, which made me start to think more closely about where I draw the line and why.
(From a Baltimore Sun article:
As early as 1842, a magazine writer was complaining that “the artist cannot compete with the minute accuracy of the Daguerreotype.” By 1859, essayist Charles Baudelaire was denouncing photography as “the mortal enemy of art.”
“If photography is allowed to stand in for art in some of its functions,” Baudelaire fumed, “it will soon supplant or corrupt it completely.”
And a few years later, the writer Hippolyte Fandrin lamented: “I greatly fear that photography has dealt a death blow to art.”)
Again, this is a genuine question. I'm not an AI fan I'm just trying to figure out why people (including myself) treat it differently from other image generation or manipulation methods.
Oh! Thanks for the ask! It prompted a lot of thoughts, actually. This got kinda long, but as a philosophy nerd I like this stuff so buckle up! (I'm purely freestyling this btw, consider it more of a philosophical discussion rather than something based on empirical evidence - nearly impossible to do while discussing what defines "art"):
Yeah photography is real art as much as any other kind of art. I should not have limited it to art only being art if it's produced using hands, but rather mainly involving the creative process of a human consciousness somehow. I think my comment in the tags was more of a way to express the opinion that "AI art will never be human in the same intrinsically valuable way that human-made art is". In my opinion, humanity is intrinsically valuable and therefore the human creative component is integral to art. This creative component can of course look very different depending on the medium.
One could however argue that AI art does involve human intention. It is the human that picks the prompts and evaluates the finished image, after all. As with photography, the human picks an object, frames it, clicks the button and then evaluates and perhaps edits/develops the image. The absolute greatest problem I have with AI art however, which the original post focuses a lot on, is the art theft and the fact that many companies are actually using AI art as a direct replacement for human art.
And AI art can imitate a wide range of styles taken from huge datasets of existing images and create something that looks like an oil painting, a photo, watercolour, digital art, graphite, or written works like poems, articles, etc! So AI art can be everything, with much the same creation process behind it. Photography might have replaced a lot of demand for portrait art and photo-realistic art in society, but that is only one single quite small branch of the overall ocean of genres within art (it perhaps rather expanded on it!) and eventually became a whole branch of its own with many different subgenres.
Some questions that popped up in my head while writing this that I realize might actually be quite difficult to answer (these are for thinking about & discussing only, don't read these questions as me trying to justify anything):
Is the process of writing in prompts for an AI work art? Why/why not?
Is non-human art less valuable than human art? Why/why not?
If AI art is theft, does it disqualify it from being art? If so, what makes it different from human-made art that is directly plagiarizing another person's art?
Is the human process of programming an AI considered art?
How could AI art be produced and used ethically?
My own conclusion from this is that Art is a difficult concept to accurately assign one single universal definition to, and just as with everything in human society, it is constantly evolving. Whether or not it does qualify as art or not at the end of the day, however, it does not change the fact that AI art is currently being used in an unethical way that is having complex and direct real life repercussions on artists.
Again, thanks for the ask!! I love stuff like this and I try to think about it as critically as possible. My own opinion is probably still mostly "AI art bad" but mainly because of the negative effects and the unethical practice.
(Asking "why/why not" is so valuable btw, it allows one to continue asking and answering questions almost endlessly and eventually either arrive at some sort of "root" answer or go around in circles)

You know taking art classes and learning about contemporary has made me realise how pointless the discussion around AI art is.
The sudden wave of "well if a robot can do it then what is it worth ?" truly just shows how we have learned nothing from modern art.
Minimalist art, ready made art and all of that all challenged the notion on if effort was necessary for art to have value.
And spoiler alert : it doesn't
It's NEVER been about how complex it looked and how much it took time. Sure you can try and focus on improving how asthetically pleasing your art looks but as much as you think you're focusing on that, that's still not the point.
Art has always been a communication device, it's literally taking a part of you and your thought process and showing it to the public. Contemporary art and all these other types of art simply just stripped down art to it's pure purpose, to communicate.
AI-art is basically the equivalent of wanting to find love and dating a robot, you're not actually doing the thing you want you're just settling for a simulacrum of the experience.
AI-art cannot be art because it's not MADE BY YOU, you can't just say you made a sandwich when really you've just ordered one at Subway. The robot made the art (and even then not really considering the data-base rips off countless artists without their consent but anyways) NOT YOU and therefore you're not an artist.
There will always be the question of jobs and I'm not naive enough to think corporate executives give a shit about artistic integrity, however if we actually like keep our head straight of what art actually means we'll be probably be fine-ish.
Because no one except greedy corporate executives and techbros really wants art to be replaced (at least from what I'm seeing), the only issue is that they unfortunatly have a decent amount of power and voice so it just really seems that way.
In the end this is just history repeating itself as corporate greed tries to convince the masses that art is just pretty pictures and that anyone who gains money off of modern art is a "hack".
Of course this extends to things like writing, etc... which really i just also consider art

To the academic validation anon - I’ve literally been in your exact boat. Exactly. Abusive situation and completely fucked up school after years of grade skipping and gifted and talented programs. Struggled with depression, OCD, and eating disorders for years. However, the only thing you cannot come from is the thing you give up on.
However, I had to step back. I had to acknowledge what was stopping me. What was my surroundings like and how did I fall into the nihilistic thought patters that led me to such a downfall. After figuring that out I brainstormed ways to do damage control. I kept trying and failing with the law of assumption (because my severe anxiety and shame surrounding the situation kept leading me to spiral and unknowingly step back into the old story).
How to do damage control? For me it was summer courses. You can do it through taking a supplemental course on your next year’s schedule or studying ahead of time for your next set of courses.
I got an A+ in two summer courses I took for original credit and I knew I could do it. I had to prove it to myself that my potential for success purely within the 3D was still there. That I was capable and competent. I ran for club officer positions, started a YouTube channel to discuss my hobbies, got a job at a local restaurant, and started doing things for my enjoyment. I made to-do lists and built up the discipline to complete them (by pushing through it even if it’s exhausting or seems pointless - you have to break the chains that hold you to your bad habits) even if my motivation was extremely low.
Tip for the to-do list thing: don’t break things down into mini-tasks. Break it down into sub-tasks but I found a long time-do list overwhelmed me. My to-do lists were usually two pages. Example:
Differential Equations
- packet 10 (packet 10 may have 20 different activities within it, but listing those out would only serve to distract, demotivate and overwhelm me and cause me to not complete it all).
- lecture 4
YouTube
- complete research for video 1
- finalize bibliography
Clean room
Etc. Etc. Etc.
Another thing that may be helpful is creating an alter ego. Make up a new name and refer to yourself by it. What does that version of you do? Embody this identity and soon it will become you. Ex. I created the alter ego “Alexandra.” When I was Alexandra I was motivated, unstoppable, and I always won and never gave up. And I began to act like that even when I let go of the alter ego.
I also began to be honest with myself. I hadn’t revised the past or lived in the end yet, so no, I hadn’t failed at the law. Could I have done more at the time to not get into that situation? Yes. Was I ashamed? Yes. Was I jealous? Yes. Did that serve me? No. And so I bought a journal and wrote about it all. The things in my head that I was too ashamed to talk about and I just let it live there. Self-awareness is integral to improvement.
Then I considered what I truly wanted. I wanted to be stress free and successful. I gained a lot of pride from academic success and I wanted it back. And by taking those relatively inconsequential summer courses I proved that if I want - I got it.
I had to find worth in myself and confidence outside of academic validation. My good grades didn’t exist without my intelligence. I.e. the intelligence came before the grades, not the other way around. The discipline came before the grade, not the other way around. I had other traits. I am an optimist and on some level I never ever gave up on myself. I am intelligent and always have been. I am pretty even if the majority of the time I doubted it. People depend on me and I depend on myself. I have dreams and goals I want to achieve. I am creative and have tons of ideas even if I’m not particularly artistic. I promise you, you are an amazing person outside of academics.
By then, I was in a good place with myself and could manifest the circumstance out of existence with little stress and resistance because I had validated my feelings, looked at my actions critically, came up with a game plan that I followed through with to appease my dominant thoughts, and was proud of myself by the end of it all.
You don’t have to do anything in the law of assumption - that’s true. However, that’s usually said by people who don’t have similar circumstances like us that have produced damaging thought patterns, nihilism, and self-sabotage. Doing something in the 3D to ease the situation whether it’s some volunteer work or a published hobby or sport to help your college applications, a few weeks of a course or two to prove that you’re capable, etc.
P.S. here are some miscellaneous habits to do that you might have let slip with the depression:
Hygiene - it can be so hard to keep up with your hygiene when you’re in the dumps but a shower, brushing your teeth, and detangling your hair goes a long way. Make sure your clothes are cleaned often, too. I know it’s overwhelming but tough love from someone who was depressed - change is painful. Doing a pull up for the first time may be hard, it may be painful - but the next time you go to do it, it will be easier.
Make routines. Every morning I wake up at the same time, I know what I’m going to have for breakfast, and watch the same docu-series while I cook it. Here’s my morning routine as an example: the night before, I pick out my all of the clothes, bags, etc. I’ll need for the day. I wake up at 5:30AM every morning, I do a workout (which boosts my energy and motivation for the day), I shower, brush my teeth, do my hair, get dressed. Then I go to my kitchen and prepare a breakfast that has protein and carbs (usually an egg and a salad or fruit salad w/ a plain bagel and cream cheese and some water), then I eat it. I go to my room and clean up the space, sit down at my desk and write a to-do list and a short (usually <1 page) journal entry to dump any brain clutter, and then I get started on my to-do list. I try to do everything at once and not take breaks because I’ve found that breaks cause my motivation to drop and I become less productive (and consequently very upset with myself). Your routine is something you should try a bit with. Create one, stick with it for a few days, if it’s making you feel mentally worse then discontinue it.
Never get behind and always show up. By showing up you create a social consequence if you don’t get your work done and you create a relationship with your teachers/professors/lecturers and you won’t want to disappoint them. By getting behind, you clutter your brain with old stuff, shame from not being on top of things, and regret while you scramble to rectify the situation. Just try your best to keep up. Try to get your work done in class or as soon as you have free time. It’s miserable in the moment but it relieves your stress right after.
Acknowledge that you may feel nihilistic and depressed - but you haven’t always and you won’t always. Your concern itself proves that this is important to you and that’s enough to work for a better future.
Only when you’ve reached stability - employ the law of assumption if you still want to revise. Only revise what you want to. If you don’t want to revise your childhood - don’t. I didn’t. It’s very ugly but it’s a part of me and I can be successful despite it. But if it’s something you’d rather not be associated with - stop associating with it.
I completely empathize with you anon and I hope you can find something helpful in this advice.
Give yourself tough love but don’t be derogatory to yourself. You got this anon. Another thing would be to cut out self-deprecation but I’ve gone on too long already ❤️❤️❤️
Oh and to academic validation anon, I assumed you were in high school from the phrasing used and high school was when I went through the same thing. If not, just apply the same to college (it might actually make the advice more manageable depending on your university, mine allows you to complete many units at once at your own risk, I’m not sure of your specific institution though ofc.) Either way, besides the buffing out your college application part it all still applies. And if you plan to go to grad school or pursue a professional degree afterward it might still apply. I’d also recommend internships and shadowing someone in your desired career. You can even contact professors who teach courses in your (desired) major if you’re in college and request to shadow them or research under them. Pre-college programs are great. Scholarships are great. It makes you feel motivated, gives you experience, and buffs out your college, job, and grad school (for me, med school) application. And as much as you don’t want to hear this - again, give yourself some law of assumption downtime and just do something to do something. Yes you could manifest that you already got the degree - but you could also step back and do something cool in the 3D based on your current assumptions and gain a lot of stability from it. Beyoncé proves once again that the inability to transition from one genre to another is a pure fucking skill issue.
Of course she has millions to sink into excellent producers, the best features, top-tier marketing, etc. That is of course an element that cannot be discounted, but then again there are so many artists of her calibre and prestige that could not make the jump. MGK's purely pathetic pop punk album is as dull as it is redundant. Drake's venture into house/dance and hip-hop fusion was embarrassingly boring. Fall Out Boy's earnest attempt at electro and synth rock was forgettable and at worst really painful to sit through and listen to. These guys also have enough money to reach out and grab the best writers, composers, features, you name it. Not to the level of Beyoncé, but their resources will definitely get the job done.
The Queen herself manages to produce a quality country album that simply does not miss while remaining commercially successful. Beyoncé's Renaissance showed us firsthand that she has the ability to hop between genres like their nothing, and she does it again in Act II. She manages to silence those who would treat her as an outcast to Country, due in no small part to bigotry. (But when Elvis did it no one bats a fucking eye and he gets all the flowers decades after his death. Gets a movie too.)
It is just insane to me how Beyoncé is one of the truly few artists who have such a large following and a storied career, without ever sacrificing artistic integrity for commercial success.
It's also so nice to see Country be interwoven and trap beats and 808's Post-Lil Nas X while carrying with it the prestige that Beyoncé seems to radiate relentlessly.
Cannot wait for the third act of this new era of the Queen Bee.

So here is a hypothetical question I’m apparently going round the tumblr asking people. Imagine you have a novel about to be published by a moderately successful publishing house and they have given you an advance that would just about allow you to take a sabbatical from your job and focus on writing full time. Netflix have got hold of a press copy of the novel and offer you a life changing amount (let’s say it would buy you your dream home and give you a little to spare). But you will have no creative control over the show Netflix will make and you will have to agree to withhold publication of the novel until Netflix want it released. Would you take the money and let the show possibly be made? Or not? Why?

I took a while to answer this because it was basically impossible to do it before (work), but I've been rotating this scenario in my brain ever since getting this ask.
I think that if a) Netflix actually gives me the money, as they're apparently given to try to steal content from people (and I suppose that goes for most corporations one deals with, sadly) and b) I've not yet signed anything with the publishing house, I'd sell the novel to Netflix. In the end, even if I end up hating the finished product, a life-changing amount would mean I got to write as much as I ever wanted for the rest of my life! Never mind a sabbatical, I could quit work and just dedicated myself to it.
I guess it all comes down to artistic integrity, but to me, that's not irreconciliable with giving up creative control? Maybe I'm cynical or just greedy and irresponsible, but to me artists adapting to their circumstances is just part of that life. Artists have always had sponsors and patrons, and we're not all Tchaikovsky, most people that come offering money also come with opinions and their own agenda. Of course in the ideal world, we'd be able to have complete creative control over our own creations, but that can never happen. Corporate greed aside, even if you're completely independent, the reader, the audience, they'll come with their own subjective baggage and have their own interpretation of your work... it's an illusion to think we can keep our work 'pure' and limit the way it'll be read, so making a deal with a company that will give you enough money to resolve your life in exchange to do something that would happen anyway in some form sounds good to me.
I suppose this opinion comes with the knowledge that most writers are unlikely to be recognized on the street, much less get so famous that people will only ever associate them with one thing - obvious exceptions like GRRM and JKR are too rare to count - and that Netflix is more on the 'woke' side of the spectrum than the alt-right side. I would not do it if you sent this ask using a platform that produces fascist content as an example. Also, I've done plenty of shitty things under my own name, so it's like, no matter what Netflix pulls, I can always do worse! Hell, rather than buy my dream house, I can settle for a small flat and then open my own publishing house, and publish my own garbage forever, campaign to make it part of the public school curriculum, sell it to other companies that are not Netflix, etc. What I mean is, once you're in a comfortable place financially, the sky is the limit. You can keep writing, keep creating, and what you do from then on can be as completely controlled by you as humanly possible.

VA - Luke Una Presents É Soul Cultura Vol.2 - another eclectic selection, 18 tracks over a wide range of moods and rhythms
Mr Bongo presents a much anticipated second volume of ‘É Soul Cultura’, curated by the charismatic Manchester based DJ Luke Una. In May 2022, ‘É Soul Cultura’ Vol.1 seemed to land at exactly the right moment. Post-lockdown, optimism was back on the rise and the dance floors swelled again. House music is integral to the É Soul sound and is represented by Nav Aktah’s deep remix of Mr Scruff, and then there’s Isis ‘In Essense’; a track of such majestic brilliance that it has never left Luke’s record bag. The selection is eclectic, global, and plucked from different times and spaces. In theory, perhaps they shouldn't work together, but there is a mysterious link that makes them gel as a whole. That’s what Luke does best. He creates a sort of musical alchemy, unifying the diverse. This isn’t a compilation focussed purely on the rare, even though many tracks featured do fall into that camp. It is best described by Luke himself, “It’s not about showing off, collector rarity, or ego-strutting, it’s all about telling stories, sharing the music, and making life’s journey mean something. In the end, of course, it’s just a compilation of other people’s music, but hopefully it’s more than that, adding something back to the pot.”

hey just wanted to let you know that zaum take you reposted comes from the overcoat who got institutionalised due to both stress of production and Roberts behaviour (& he was open about RKs influence &it was mentioned in the video in the letter robert sent and chris dismissed just not by name). so idk how much more could they open their mind on this situation really. Hey anon thanks for your message. I find it a bit difficult to believe the OP is who you say they are after checking out the reddit profile from which it was posted, and it's OP's post that I'm specifically commenting on. (Happy to be proven wrong or given a source for what you say here though!)
In any case, I stand by what I said in my tags. But in case it wasn't clear, I do think OP brings up points worth considering. Ilmar's motivations for letting PMG have free reign on interviewing are obviously not because he believes in journalistic integrity—Ilmar clearly wouldn't have done so if he was worried it'd change the eventual outcome of the legal dispute. And yes, this video will sow public division sure, purely because we actually have more information to go off of now (a step up from the very simplistic and limited view we had before due to the sheer lack of info that wasn't just one news outlet reposting another, a tiny handful of press releases from either side, or Martin's tweets).
But where my opinion differs from OP is I do think it was valuable and important to include the perspectives of these employees, because one big aspect of this legal dispute is in fact the grounds on which Kurvitz and co were ousted. Yes, of course it doesn't have any bearing on the final ruling. And I agree that regardless of their interpersonal issues, it was wrong of the IP to be forced out of the original creators' control. Again, I'm not discounting that part. But I object to the callous attitude toward current employees even when it's clear this entire debacle has caused a lot of hurt, and OP's labeling of that entire third of the video as "fluff". To me, it is disingenuous to feel so strongly about Robert being able to get his creation back while entirely ignoring all the effort that went into said creation from the rest of the team. They deserve to be advocated for as well.
Ultimately (and this is my opinion based on what I know), it looks to me that DE was created by a bunch of artists who didn't know much about IP laws or how to protect themselves back then, who then in the ensuing years got taken advantage of by investors. And unfortunately, everyone else on the ground at ZA/UM (who weren't responsible for whatever wrongdoing occurred) got caught in the crossfire, and those people have been either harassed or in this particular case—had their struggles entirely dismissed. I don't think that's fair or kind, do you?

After having only watched passable-to-mediocre movies (or worse, if you read my last filmposting) for the past month, The Thin Red Line was like drinking deep cool water poured from a stoneware decanter left to chill in a cellar on a dusty, hot day. A healthy diet of good artistic media is paramount to my happiness, and I’m miserable without at least one AFI or Criterion collection film a week.
Though I do shill for Terrence Malick (he’s only one or two degrees of separation away from me, after all) you cannot dispute that the man is a cinematic genius. He makes groundbreaking films in the 70s, disappears from the public eye and general hollywood for 20 years, then pops up to make this movie.
The film itself is legitimately incredible, and between the direction, the writing, editing, and frankly mindblowing performances from one of the most star studded casts I’ve ever seen get no screentime whatsoever, I can’t pick what shines brighter. George Clooney is in it for something like a minute. Billy Bob Thornton recorded voice-over for the entire movie that was completely cut from the film. It’s incredible. I love it. I can’t stop gushing.
As far as movies go, we tend to throw around the word “elevated” a lot for anything artsy. Any horror film A24 has put out, for example. Any attempt at taking media with a low-culture inception and tradition boosted to more artistic ambition counts as elevated, hence all the attempts at elevated horror. To make a WWE program an emmy contender measured against breaking bad would be to elevate it.
Of course you should not attempt to make pro wrestling a sort of prestige product. Its viewers are more likely to hold a knowledge of Coors Light than Carménère, and if we are to use the Roger Ebert scale of “knows what it’s about and achieves it,” then WWE doesn’t need help from anyone credited as a producer on HBO’s Euphoria. Likewise, the Evil Dead films may not be very good but they don’t need the help of anyone who knows what Ari Astor looks like or thinks that horror is really about love.
War movies, for as much as I love them (and know that I love them deeply), have never been shy of blatant propaganda, and therefore are ripe for elevation. Now I know the kneejerk reaction is to point at Jarhead or Full Metal Jacket or Apocalypse Now! and say “well those were artistic!” and to that I will concede that the military propaganda we consume these days is less blatantly pushed out through the war film genre than it was in the day of John Wayne’s Longest Day or Green Beret. We have MARVEL movies for that now. Yet as any number of state-subsidized GoArmy or USAF propaganda films will show, just because Tom Cruise rides his motorbike, it doesn’t make the writing and artistic integrity any less flimsy.
Of course the works of Kubrick, Coppola, and Mendes are all artistic and elevated, but The Thin Red Line tops them all. Kubrick and Coppola both made gorgeous antiwar films that inspired countless young men to join the military and fight for their country in foreign wars. Kubrick’s drill sergeant inspired a generation of men to become marines for some reason, and Coppola’s Valkyries helicopter sequence cemented in the minds of those same soldiers the idea that whatever we were doing over there (in the war that crippled the Army’s domestic reputation for decades after) was regrettable but cool. Mendes’ Jarhead is the closest to The Thin Red Line in regards to the pure lack of wartime glorification, but Malick supersedes all of them in his elevation of the war movie.
For the first two hours or so (rough estimate) of the film, we do not clearly see the enemy. This is a WWII movie, and should we follow the logic of Saving Private Ryan (filmed in the same year!) it would only be logical to intercut shots of Japanese machinegunners firing their iconic banana-clipped pieces down the hill at the approaching Americans. This is our blameless war, and the nuclear blasts aren’t really that bright as long as you squint. The cloth mullet things (which I’m sure have a real name) hanging from the rear of the Japanese headgear even mimic the Stahlhelm flare of Nazi stormtroopers the GIs were fighting in the other WWII theater. The imagery is rich, it’s there, and it’s been done before. Yet for a long time the enemy appears as no more than vague figures and muzzleflashes over the ridgeline. 
Instead, The Thin Red Line first treats us to a few hours of infantrymen being turned into hamburger in various graphic manners as camera pans to lingering shots of the treeline or some exotic bird. Haunting philosophical narration rambles over this, posing existential questions and pondering the nature of mankind. Sometimes there’s a flashback to what appears to be a Texas farmhouse or to a small fishing hamlet in the Solomon islands. There are also lingering shots of trees and sunlight in the flashbacks, don’t worry. #STATUS: ARBOREAL. Brother, I am drinking deep.
When we finally do see direct combat with the enemy, none of it plays to much glory. The chimps killing each other in the opening of Kubrick’s Space Odyssey did so with more splendor and glory than Malick’s infantrymen. Despite all the Japanese atrocities and the war crimes and the vengeance owed to the american side for their fallen comrades, the route and defeat feels neutral. It feels dirty, inhuman. For every slur and murdered Vietnamese civilian in Kubrick and Coppola’s messaging, this is the movie that made war feel much dirtier, much baser than the charge of the light brigade-sort of wartime narrative we are so often fed about the world wars in general.
This is a World War Two film! This was the good one, the war we won, not a Tie like Korea was or the anti-war darling like Vietnam. We can feel good about this one. Yet The Thin Red Line doesn’t let us. It won’t let us look away from the ugliness even during a supposedly heroic bayonet charge. When it does let us look away, the lingering peace of the trees and the birds and the tossing waves only condemn mankind’s savagery all the more.

Chapter 2
After leaving the room in a daze, Cheng Xueyi realized that she had taken the blame for the original owner again.
Just now, Xu Qiyan was obviously mocking her for wanting to climb high, but she couldn't refute it.
